I thought you fished all your stock out of the river? 😁 And thanks a lot for thinking of me with the DoAll blade guides. I will have another video on that gearbox in the nearish future. Cool the way your showcased the Wahlstrom chuck. I really like when people show unusual tools.
Once I asked Jeremy what are his wife's reactions when he brings something home found in the river, so on. He suggested to watch that epic Rotary SMP video when your sister visited your shop 😂 That's how I found your channel.
I love that chuck. Where I live we have a huge shed next to the local rubbish dump and people donate stuff and they have staff to pick stuff up off the tip face. It absolutely amazing what comes in from cars and boats that people just don’t want anymore, a lot of the cars get driven in, to books ect. I’m always out there looking for things I didn’t know I needed. The prices are not written on anything, you just take it to the counter and they take a look and give you a price on the spot. Sounds weird but it works because it’s so cheap. I picked up a good quality compressor that just needed a capacitor for $10, fixed it for $7 and sold it for $740. A very rare gear shift for $5 which I resold for $650. Bikes were generally $10 and so were lawnmowers. A recent article said that they had found a couple of old German stick grenades and another was an unused rocket launcher I guess from people cleaning out grandpa’s sheds. Tools, you name it, they’ve had them and I have been lucky enough to get some fantastic bargains. Cheers.
You kind of just touched on a very important part of scrounging/repairing old junk on the cheap: know what your buddies need, so if you see it at a garage sale for pennies, you can pounce and hook them up. This makes them happy, and encourages them to keep an eye out for that super rare set of collets for your super old lathe that you got super cheap, cause it uses a funny size collet. Cause at the end of the day, it's about making memories, not making parts, lol.
Re surface plate. 3 pads not just to stop warping but rocking and wobbling too. The position of said feet distance from the edge etc. are the critical points to stop warping OX tools or Rob(can't spell his name) did a video about it.
Weighing the plastic and calculating the density still leaves you with some choices to be made. I learned "the flame test" at school. Burn a corner of the plastic and blow out the flame and smell the fume. Not without health hazards I guess but the PE and PP types are non toxic. I guess the list can be found on the internet somewhere. Teflon is indeed heavy but it also feels slick. It deforms like crazy under pressure. So when you clamp it in a vice for milling don't go for coffee first but start cutting right away. Ask me how I know... Thank you for sharing your adventures with us! Best, Job
That Procunier should be nice inside, they're tightly fit & havevseals on the shafts. (Procuniers are 1000's new.) I found a small Procunier on the side of a Long Island road, next to some gallons of latex, which is what I stopped for. The tapper was laying between the cans & some misc electrical stuff, in tall grass. Almost missed it. Opened it up & the cork on the clutch was like new & the inside was pristine clean, even tho the outside looked as bad as your big boy tapper. I already had a like new Ridgid tapper, so I told a buddy he could have it. Then Covid happened & taking it to him got delayed for 3-4 years, (not just the Covid, I got cancer at the start of the epidemic.) I finally take the Pro, a 8-9 pc set of mic's I'd bought for him & a bunch of other stuff. He died suddenly 11 days later & when a month I went down to see his daughter cause he'd left me some stuff. I asked her if she'd seen the box of stuff 'cause he was gonna send me 350 to cover the stuff I'd bought for him. About then her idiot husband pipes up & said, I saw it... it was on his bed, some of the stuff was out. Good, where is it? Oh, I dumpstered it; figured it was junk if it wasn't in his shop. Don't worry, I didn't choke him; they have little kids & he has a job. THAT is all that saved him, esp when I found out what ELSE got dumpstered. Effing idiot.
I knew it! Every time you have something new, you take it apart. Of cousre, there is nothing wrong with that. It's interesting to find out how it works.
Nice video. Can't wait to see what's inside that tapping head. I typically like seeing what people are finding in their area. But yeah, sometimes it feels like they'r just rubbing it in.
We found on of those Procunier tapers at our local scrap yard and it's still in pieces, they is a fellow on eBay with parts for these, had buy a new clutch and the planetary gear shafts/bolts-nuts, hope to get ours in working order sooner than later!
Re: the amber plastic..... My father was director of engineering for a number of plastic companies back in the day. Had a few of his own, like Cast Optics. Do you have a brinell tester? You could also use solvents to distinguish between acrylic, polycarbonate, etc...
I waffled for a couple minutes on a cast iron surface plate at an estate sale turned my back to look at something else for a minute, and it was gone. Still kicking myself 😢 Yeah there's only about 4000 of us looking for B&S-9 usable tooling... Nice finds Jeremy !
The shipping charges between USA and Canada are stupid too. We're supposed to have "free trade," but every time I try to bring something across the border, I get dinged sales taxes on both sides plus duty into Canada. Silliest of all, if I bring a new product in from China, I pay peanuts for shipping, if at all, and no duty, sales tax, etc.
@MyLilMule , you and me both. I won't buy off ebay if it comes from the US because the shipping is usually multiples more than the item. It's ridiculous.
Wow, 2 seconds in, and I recognize it! I've been there. Bought some cool stuff. The owner was an interesting guy. We ended up at what I thought was pretty fare prices.
what an awesome chuck.... great great score....i score a 3/8 like brand new albrecht chuck for 20 bucks the other day....i never pass up an albrecht...procunier was a good score too.. love the content...cant wait til you fire up the jeep :)...wait i shouldn't say fire with electric vehicles
In Australia some Guys converted a 40 series Landcruiser to Electric and drove it 13km's underwater across the Darwin Harbor, there's video's on it, i thought you might be interested.
I managed to score a cast iron surface plate like yours but half the size in near mint condition. Total price? Free99 🙂 Sadly every thing else in the Uk is vastly overpriced for used tools 😢
I like that market already and I'll never be able to go lol Definitely looking forward to seeing the refurb on the tapping head. I am a long time tool buyer and fixer upper, mostly hand tools because electrics fry my noggin, something about electricity does not compute ....oh well Anyway how soon for the video.... ? 😁
Which tool to find would be your holy grail, obviously it's got to be vintage and pretty rare. Possibly from yesteryear that most would not even know it's function
Oooh, that’s a good one. The tapping head is actually pretty far up there. If I could pick one thing to have fall out of the sky and into my shop, it would be a set of tri-mics. They’re out there, but they usually cost and arm and a leg each, and measure a very small range. I have one that didn’t cost and arm and a leg and measures 1.4-1.6” A taper micrometer would be cool too. I’ll have to think on that more.
I will fight you for any BS9 tooling. 😂 So do you also wind up with BS9 taper with either an odd drawbar size or just straight up being a tang end? Because I would love to see your solution for modifying them to work on a Wells-Index head.
Nice catch... Was going to post my own vid on my latest scrapyard rummaging loot, but i got all pissy about some mistakes i made and i scrapped the footage... I`ll have to go over my loot at one point and show some stuff... Guess i`ll get to it at some point... Just recently ran across a nice condition surface grinder on the scrapyard, but i can`t take it, i`ve literally 0 space... if i had my shop set up, i would pick it up for reparations and re-sale... As things stand, i splashed it with chainsaw oil and wrapped it in cling foil in hopes that it will wait for me as long as i will take, or will be there, well preserved until some other maniac like me comes by and saves the poor thing from the chinese smelters... Oy vey... My golems have failed me... Now i can only lament my current state and hope that shit gets done asap; can`t allow such machines to go to waste... Who knows, maybe RotarySMP would snag it off of me... It would be a long shipping distance, but europe is europe, and a decent truck will haul 2000kg like it`s a bag of flour... Tho, i gotta say, i`ve been hunting for a surface plate for a while, a resto project like this, but such pieces elude me... *jealous noises* Best regards! Steuss
I just love the confidence at diving in and taking things apart. But I guess these things were manmade so can be unmade by man, rather than made by robots
Since you’re going to ask where is magical place is, it’s called The Point Barn near Danville, PA. If you’re in the area, you should check it out.
@pocket83squared -- if this place is out near your neck of the woods, you might enjoy it...
cool! that's only 2hr drive north! Bills old bike barn looks wicked cool also!
I think I have an old b&s #9 endmill holder if your interested

@RotarySMP it was fun for us too.
I liked that one! 👍
Yes, I want a video on the repair and rehab of the crusty old tapping machine thank you
Yes, definitely!
that amber plastic is called ultem, its good stuff. its an industrial medical-grade plastic
Thanks! I knew someone would know!
I second this. I recognised it straight away 😊
Reminds me of PEEK but certainly could be ULTEM. The PEEK I've used is perhaps a bit more transparent.

OX tools or Rob(can't spell his name) did a video about it.
Yep, a three legged stool is always stable.
Having a surface plate mounted that way is like having the floor on top and the stool upside down
Nice score on the surface plate!

So glad you found those shiny DoAll guides! I’ve been keeping watch for them to send to Mark, but they just didn’t turn up. Good prospecting 👍
I use the walstum chuck in the lathe head stock for work holding. Second op. Super fast for critical beburing and finishing

I see the husky screwdriver! Too bad they don’t sell them anymore. I used to buy them 10 at a time for my techs.
I'm excited for the Procunier rebuild video, I hope it's very detailed.
