"The Devil You Know" is my favorite Black Sabbath album with Dio. I don't care that they changed the name of the band to Heaven & Hell for that album...it's still Black Sabbath.

    • @StephenZimmer
      @StephenZimmer 2 года назад +2

Absolutely is. It was simply legal issues that prevented them from being able to formally call it Black Sabbath. They used the Black Sabbath winged devil icon in the album artwork too, which tells me what the band truly thought. Should really be considered part of the Sabbath discography

I'm with Marco, Dehumanizer is a masterpiece beginning to end, I, Computer God, Buried Alive and TV Crimes are some of my favorite Sabbath tunes. In fact the song I would be in my top 3. The solos on Computer God are very well done in my opinion and I don't feel like he's copying anybody, sounds like Iommi to me. Not sure where the "poppy" comments come from, there's nothing poppy on Dehumanizer. And I actually prefer the Wayne's World version of Time Machine.

Dawn definitely justifies her points very well. She’s also a hard fan to please it seems. ‘Sin’s of the Father’ is the unsung hero of this album, due to the middle vocal section build up when Ronnie builds up with -
‘They call it mystery, but any fool can see..’
    Anyone?! 🤷🏽…

Dehumanizer has some great songs on it, but there are also a number of, shall we say, not so strong tracks in the package. Compare that to Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules where virtually every track is top tier and there's no question in my mind that Dehumanizer is simply not as good. Heavy? Yes. As good? No.

You know, after watching this video, I went back and listened to this album and man, I get what your saying Marco. I believe this album is extremely underrated. I think the reason why it holds up so well is the production still sounds fresh and current. As well as the social commentary in the lyrics. I totally disagree with Dawn on that solo in Too late. I think it's genius. To me it kind of emulates that sound of an evil spirit or dark forces being unleashed. Excellent album and great episode. Thanks guys. 🤘

My views of the album are definitely on the Marco side, though it is great to hear another perspective. Dehumanizer is an album that has grown on me over the years. Every member of the band is crushing it. I imagine that the tension in the band only added to the intensity of the album. My favourites are ‘Buried Alive’ ‘I’ ‘Time Machine’ & ‘TV Crimes’.Ronnie’s vocals are particularly abrasive on ‘Buried Alive’. ‘After All’ comes across as trying too hard to be ‘classic Sabbath, and I think Dio’s lyrics are specifically trying too hard, less so the band. The cymbal sound on ‘TV Crimes’ always sounded too bright, but that’s curable with a good graphic equalizer! I must re-listen to the album. It’s a pity Cozy Powell didn’t get through the fraught album rehearsals to drum on the album. To see Cozy & Dio onstage with Geezer & Tony Iommi would have been a moment to cherish. I hope Tony will sanction an improved audio of the rehearsals with Cozy & Dio, for a future release.

The bashing is real in this video. If I was puttting words in Dawn's mouth I would say she believes Iommi is overrated.
The one thing I totally agree with her on is that weird chord-progression in the pre-chorus to After All (top 5 Dio-era song for me) as it did take me a while to get used to that major-key section in an otherwise super dark song
I tried identifying the Mustaine lick in "Master of Insanity" and the closest I can come up with would be "The Doctor is Calling" (great deep cut from Risk), but that's several years after Dehumanizer. The aforementioned lick is also similar to one found in "Children of the Sea".
I do agree that the album as a whole is not a masterpiece or all that great but I feel the same about all the Dio-era albums. They all contain at least 2-3 songs that I always skip when I try to listen to the albums in full.
I would say she is right that some of the riffage and production kinda have that "heavy for the sake of heavy" feel that veterans were doing in the nineties. Jugulator (Judas Priest) and Demonic (Testament) also come to mind in that category.

    • @elinino5275

Master Of Insanity wasn't a ripoff of Zeppelin's Trampled Under Foot. It was lifted from The Wanton Song and it was a song Geezer brought from the Geezer Butler Band. I get it, but it's a cool song never the less. This was a return to form for Dio, Iommi and Butler and I think it fits right in with music being released at the time. Iommi's guitar tone is back and his riffing is back. I don't hear Tony trying to be Dave Mustaine at all. The guitar leads are all pure Iommi. The bass tone is menacing and fits the album perfectly. Dio is pure gold. The cymbals do sound saturated but if you listen to any other Mack produced albums, they sound pretty much the same. Max Norman was slatted to produce but didn't work out. Wish he did...I think the record would've been even stronger.

Heaven And Hell is my favorite Dio era Black Sabbath album. It's an almost perfect album (I totally agree with Dawn about Lady Evil) and definitely in my top 5 all time favorite Sabbath albums. All Dio era Black Sabbath albums are great though. Mob Rules and Dehumanizer are awesome. I also love Live Evil. All 4 albums have great album covers as well. Love all the various figures representing different songs on the Live Evil cover. Always thought that was cool. Dehumanizer as an album is an easy 9/10 for me. Love how heavy the songs are and Dio sounds great as always. Killer album cover with the robot. It's a shame the reunion with Dio didn't last longer. The 3 studio albums are so consistently great it's almost like you can't be contrarian by picking any one of them as your favorite imo. I've been a fan of "Dehumanizer" since I first heard it back in the 90's when it came out. Is it the best Sabbath album? Not really. But it is an amazing album that is crushingly heavy in its own right, and it's seriously underrated. I can't tell you how many times I've been in the mood for some Black Sabbath and dove straight for that album.

This record passed me by at the time so I came to it in the mid 00's. I think it's really good record and is very consistent and rewards on listens. I still prefer HAH and MB but it can take it's place along side those quite happily.

After Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules and Live Evil's artwork this was total crap. The music itself was...eh...I was disappointed and underwhelmed. Over time I've grown to like it more but it is just not on par with Heaven and Hell/Mob Rules in my opinion.

I'm with Marco here, and not just because our first names are so similar 😀 I've discussed this point privately before with Popoff, but in 2022, Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules sound a bit quaint. I'm older than Dawn and Marco, born in 1970, I've lived with Sabbath and Dio since 1981, when I first started listening to music for adults. In 1992, Dehumanizer wasn't what the Sabbath fans were looking for. But in the years since, there's been a deluge of Death and Black Metal. What qualifies as heavy music has gotten heavier and heavier, while production has gotten more basic and pro-tooled. These days, I listen mostly to underground Black Metal, and so now, 30 years on, Dehumanizer sounds great, and so does its follow-up, Strange Highways (and the predecessor, Lock Up the Wolves, I'm with you on those, Marco) . But to someone who doesn't have a background in extreme Metal, Dehumaizer sounds unnecessarily harsh, and lacking compared to the previous Dio Sabbath albums (Holy Diver is a bit quaint compared to Strange Highways in the same way). For me, it's all good, but I definitely don't see the less-regarded albums as actually lesser.

There are some good tracks on Dehumanizer, but I find the sound very cold and distant, and it drags some of the songs down. I'd say that the 3 things that drag it to the bottom of my BS albums ranking are the production and the art cover, but also a certain lack of genius from an otherwise perfect line-up. I'd say that Dehumanizer is one of my least fav Sabbath album along Forbidden, 13 and Eternal Idol. Now, bare in mind that i enjoy EVERY Sabbath album and that I don't think there's a bad BS record. But when put against Master of Reality, Sabotage, Paranoid , Heaven and Hell or Born Again, Dehumanizer fails to deliver the goods imho. Cheers!
