  • The American Dream Mall across from the Meadowlands complex in East Rutherford, NJ has gone through a lot in its lifespan, from the lengthy construction process to finally opening right before a global pandemic shut just about everything down once again. While they've been struggling, they still continue to open new stores and experiences, and as of June 26th, one of the most eagerly-awaited experiences has finally come to fruition.
    The Gameroom powered by Hasbro is the mall's first dedicated, stand-alone arcade experience. Brought to life by the Los Angeles-based Kilburn Live team, this family entertainment center on the second floor of the mall spans thousands of square feet and has a ton of things to do, with more Hasbro branding and tie-ins than you can shake a stick (or maybe Mr. Monopoly's fat stack of cash) at!
    The arcade is anchored by the new "Ultimate Rollergames" collection of nine Skeeball-inspired games, each based around a well-known piece of Hasbro IP. These include classic family games like Hungry Hungry Hippos, Monopoly, Sorry!, Candy Land, and Chutes & Ladders, down to retro 80's favorites like Simon and Trivial Pursuit, and there's even some based on Battleship and Transformers, as well! The goal is to play all nine games and aim for a high cumulative score. While they all follow the familiar ball-rolling formula, each one has its own twist. Candy Land is a gigantic, oversized pinball machine which will have you flipping to get your ball into the highest value hole. Sorry! is like a giant roulette wheel and it can even end up deducting points from your total -- sorry! Trivial Pursuit will have you answering trivia questions by rolling the ball into the correct answer. While these are fun to play solo, they're even more fun to play with a group of friends or family!
    Aside from the Ultimate Rollergames stuff, there's also a full-sized arcade on par with anything you'd find at a Dave & Buster's, with tons of redemption games (of course, including those based on Hasbro properties like Connect 4, Monopoly, Twister, and so forth), racing games, sports games, shooters, and retro faves like Pac-Man and Space Invaders. Along the back wall, you'll even find some familiar carnival games with a new Hasbro twist; the familiar water shooting game is themed to NERF Super Soakers, there's a derby racing game with a Monopoly overhaul, and a brand new one called Potato Head Jump that will have you smacking an oversized button to make your Potato Head... well... jump over a rope! And of course, there's a ton of claw machines here as well, all filled with plushie versions of familiar icons from the Hasbro family such as Power Rangers, My Little Pony, Operation, and more.
    The prize redemption room is basically walking into a toy store from the 80's or 90's, because they've lined the walls with all of their classic games and toys. No huge ticket value items, so if you're looking to flip tickets for an iPad or Playstation, you won't be able to do that here, but you can definitely walk out with arms full of board games.
    In addition to all of this, the Gameroom also features a G.I. Joe themed laser tag arena, a Candy Land inspired milkshake bar, and a full-service restaurant and bar with menu items inspired by the vast legacy of Hasbro. We sampled some of the items they offered during the preview, but also checked out the restaurant for lunch, and it was absolutely delicious, with prices on par for what you'd expect in this complex.
    With the opening of The Gameroom, American Dream continues to grow as a family destination with tons of things for adults and children of all ages to do. If you're in the area, I definitely recommend checking it out!

    So cool, a high end arcade that's a tribute to the games we loved as children. And surely we'll see great art and games based on the Wizards of the Coast products that represent 20% of Hasbro's profit, D&D and Magic the Gathering. Oh they're not represented? A little shelf in the corner of the cantina with some weird D&D stuff? Way to hit that out of the park.

      The sarcasm is just dripping off this comment by the gallon. 😂 But I do agree, I wish they had done more with that particular set of their holdings. Hopefully they will add something at a later date, or possibly even make a stand-alone spot that's more dedicated to that specific target market. This might be within the realm of possibility considering they also opened up a Planet Playskool experience a few miles away at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, which is geared more to children 9 and under.

    I am surprised by the low amount of Wizards of the Coast properties in this place. I would figured they would have at least one machine based on Dungeon's and Dragons or Magic: the Gathering.
    The only thing I seen were some product in the store and maybe some MtG packs in the claw machine?

      Yeah, I definitely noticed the stuff that was at the prize redemption counter (a Baldur's Gate reskin of Betrayal at House on the Hill jumped out at me). I'm sure they'll continue to add to this location as it's definitely flagship potential.

    • @michaelwolf8690
      @michaelwolf8690 4 дня назад +1

      Yeah, they definitely didn't want to associate with those properties. Also weird that there's seemingly no way to check out these games to play them in the cantina.

      So I really enjoyed the Ultimate Rollergames in general, not all of them were successful but the Hungry Hungry Hippos, Trivial Pursuit, Candy Land, and Simon ones were the most fun. The new Potato Head Jump game was dumb but fun as well. And Twister gets especially hectic when you're playing it multiplayer!
      We tried some of the crane games and unfortunately walked away empty handed on all of them. Made up for it by hitting jackpots on Power Roll, Space Invaders Frenzy, and Red Zone Rush.
      I hadn't seen Space Raider or HyperNova before, so gave both of them a try, not really sold on either of them. And unfortunately the coin pushers had really bad swipe-to-token ratios so I skipped them after a single swipe.
