  • Welcome to our 3rd video from our trip to Moab in Nov. 2020. I kept most of the sound from the clips and added a background track, as well.
I’ve gotta say, Elephant Hill is a must-do if you have the time and are comfortable with your skill level. It has several different types of terrain, from sandy trails and fins to Jurassic-looking rocks and sharp, rocky terrain. The scenery and views are amazing. (In my opinion) It is a technical trail, meaning you will be mentally spent after wheeling it in your Grand Cherokee. It requires a lot of attention, quick line picking, and, if it’s wet, some solid marbles. An independent suspension vehicle Ike the WK2 will spend a good amount of time on 3 or 2 wheels as you descend and turn sharp corners. The “road” has degraded so much over time that they’ve actually tried to secure it with asphalt and cement in places, not that it makes it any easier.
It was about 1.5 hour drive from Moab, and, due to snowy weather on the way to the Canyonlands Needles district, we lost some time. We decided to skip the Confluence Overlook & The Joint, but I’d like to go back and hike them next time. In the summer hours, you’d have more daylight and wouldn’t be as rushed.
Mods at time of Moab trip:
    • Mopar factory skid plates and rock rails
    • Offroad Animal Front Bumper & Hooks
    • Offroad Animal Bash Plate (sump skid plate)
    • Offroad Animal Hidden Winch Mount
    • Nitto Ridge Grapplers P265/65r18
    • Smittybilt 12k X2O Comp Winch
    • Hooke Road Hitch Skid
    • VIAIR 300P compressor
If you're planning a trip to the Moab area, I highly suggest the trail guide book from Funtreks (I am not paid by them) as it provides info on most of the trails in the area and includes GPS waypoints and info on some obstacles. I also highly recommend joining one of the several FB groups so you can plan meets with others that will be there the same days and you can find out about trail conditions. .gpx files are available on jeeptheusa.com as of Jan 2021.
We met a couple via one of the Moab FB groups and ended up spending our entire time in Moab with them (Land Pirates on YT). The lifted JK in the video is theirs and it shows a good contrast to the WK2 on some of the obstacles. Most of the video was shot by my wife, but some was also shot by the other couple.

You should be fine. Just take your time. Rock rails and larger tires would also be a good thing.
It’s one of the few trails we did that I would love to do again.

We did the loop, but, due to snow that morning, we were losing daylight and didn’t do any hiking. That’s one of the reasons we want to go back!

What tires are you using and to what psi did you air down? Thanks. As owner of a 2016 JGC Overland Trail Rated and a 2020 JGC Trailhawk I am always interested to hear what other owners are using and doing! Great video, btw. Question: why the reversing at about 16.20' ?

    • @funkywk2

Currently running Nitto Ridge Grapplers in P265/65r18. They don’t handle rocks well and are torn up after the Moab trip. Currently looking to go a little bigger and better.
In Moab, we ran 18-20 psi on all the trails/dirt roads.
The first part of the trail is out and back, and the switchbacks on the backside of the hill are too narrow to turn the corner. The signs tell you to pull in and back down on the way in, so it’s the opposite on the way out.

Funky WK2 that's good to know! Thanks. I'm considering a trip out there in the late Fall...Covid-19 allowing! Late April to mid October I live in Greece where I do some serious (but not extreme) off-roading as well! Scenery and trails there are very similar. Stay safe and keep on off-roading.

Great video and good job showing the sketchiness of the trail! As an owner of a '18 JGC Trailhawk, I look forward to more of your content. Do you plan to go bigger than p265-65-r18? I plan to upgrade to a larger tire from OEM and would like to see how a larger tire on our Trailhawks handle the trails.

    • @funkywk2
      @funkywk2  3 года назад +1

Thank you!! I’m considering a larger tire, but can’t decide due to too many conflicting reports of rubbing. I will be sure to update everyone if/when we change them out.

I have a Trailhawk, and after research, to put a bigger tire on you have to do modifications, which are hard to do on the stock Trailhawk , otherwise the tires will rub. Mine is a 2017 model, added Magnaflo Exhaust system, sounds great, especially in Sport mode and provides an extra boost of power. Great video, what a Trail! Awesome...Keep on Jeepin

I’m going to put a short vid together, but we did end up going bigger. Mastercraft CXT in 275/65r18. No rubbing that I’ve found yet, but we’ve only been running them a few days. No real articulation to test them. Headed to Hot Spring Easter weekend to break them in.

We had Ridge Grapplers in P265/65r18 when we did Elephant Hill. They aren’t cut and chip resistant, so this trail and Top of the World destroyed them.
Running LT275/65r18 Mastercraft Courser CXT’s now.

Thanks!! It's doing well!! The Ridge Grapplers, on the other hand.... Elephant Hill and Top of the world tore them up, so I'm looking into replacements that will be cut and chip resistant.

@@volodymyrprosov6134 They are okay for stock, but we switched them for Ridge Grapplers at 3800 miles. We needed something more aggressive and with sidewall protection.
