    Copyright was STRICT on this one! Tried many times with different levels of visual 'filters' and the video kept getting blocked; this was the best I could manage where you can still kind of see what's going on in the video and where the video isn't immediately blocked 🥲

      as other Pentaholics have stated on other reaction channels, the video is nice but all understand the copyright issues
      - all of us have most likely seen the original video multiple times because Pentatonix brings us to listen to them and sometimes visually engage with them
      - Pentaholics are here to share the joy of a reaction that gives back to them
      - Based on your wonderful membership growth, people are here for your reaction, not the video

    I think it's fine to include this (and the others with Lindsey and/or Kevin playing their strings) in your acapella playlist-they're still singing in that style. Plus, Kevin plays his cello in a number of their songs, and you'll miss some amazing performances if you skip those.
    As far as this goes, I think it's amazing how well Scott sings in French since he doesn't speak French. He got a coach to teach him proper pronunciation so he could do this song properly.
    I also love that they are always respectful to the originals for their covers.

    • @pjschmid2251
      @pjschmid2251 7 месяцев назад +1

      I think when they include instruments the way they arrange it they treat them like additional voices rather than accompaniment. So, in that sense, it stays true to the concepts of a cappella.

  • @hernameispekka_Rebecca
    @hernameispekka_Rebecca 7 месяцев назад +48

    I think you really hit on a point of why they are the ones who went mainstream. They share parts well, but they also sit back well. They have talked about actively focusing on leaving ego at the door. In the recording of Evergreen video Kevin (the literal beatboxer) says "I don't think this should have a beat on it, just sleigh bells". So he stands and does one sound. Because that is what works the best in that song. The songs don't feel crammed because they don't try to show off every person in every song. I respect that a lot. Ofc they have their show-off pieces, but it's always well placed and doesn't remove you from the momentum of comfortably listening, unless that is very specifically their intention. I personally have noticed that it's one of the reasons I end up listening to PTX more than the other big a cappella groups. (I hate comparing, it's useless, so this is not meant as that. Just something I've noticed about myself). While PTX are very complex and musically interesting when you get in to the nitty gritty, they have managed to still balance and maintain a "veneer" of easy listening to their music. Which means both the musically knowledgeable people can nerd out but also the general public can have a comfortable and nice listen. (Sorry for my barely related rant!)

    • @hernameispekka_Rebecca
      @hernameispekka_Rebecca 7 месяцев назад +10

      @@goldfishwatching1619 Yeah, they often talk about stuff like that. But they are not naive about it. They talk about trying to leave ego at the door and sometimes that's hard. The way they talk about music and communicate I almost think they might have gone to therapy or at least done some actual work on how to communicate respectfully and effectively. They have likened it to a 5 way marriage in the past. Really impressive.

    My theory is that having Kevin on cello still counts as a capella because, when you see him play, that instrument is part of him. His parents wanted every opportunity for him and, though they expected him to go into medicine, when he showed some early talent for music they started him on piano at 4, cello at 6 and saxophone at 10. He has solo sections in Pentatonix concerts where he does some of his arrangements; he likes doing cello / beatboxing arrangements of classical pieces, often with Matt on drumset. He has a variety of musical experiments on his RUclips channel (KO -- Kevin Olusola). One of my favorites is his KOver of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" -- ruclips.net/video/nyYG70aM9Fw/видео.html

    What a treat! Another PTX cover. They made all their French fans super happy with this one and yes, Scott’s French is pretty good. I especially love his guttural R in “sacRé papa”. Not easy for an anglophone. They sing in different languages, as I’m sure a lot of fans told you and they pick their international covers carefully. They have a huge fan base in Japan, where they did “Perfume Medley” and “Pretender” covers and filmed their “Rather be” video. They love music of all kind, love their fans and love a challenge. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thank you. Always excellent. 🤗

    This song is a great demonstration of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. PTX works because they all serve the music, not themselves. I think they are unique because there are no weak links. They all are amazing solo worthy performers, but they combine all their strengths and give their all to whatever best works for their performance.

    They have two other songs with Lindsey on the violin and Kevin playing cello of course. Radioactive and over the River which has Matt. Ptx use the cello in a number of songs which many are fine including it in their a cappella, since Kevin playing his cello is a huge part in how the group found him. It’s part of their story. If you ever watch Kevin’s 5th you’ll hear the story. Plus it’s incredible to see Kevin and Matt on the cello and drums.

    Lindsey has done three songs so far with Pentatonix. They are all really well done. While not strictly acapella the instruments accompany. Vocals are always the most important.

    One of the things that makes PTX so successful is the unselfish nature of its members; they are always willing to do whatever it takes to make the composition work. Any of them could be the "lead singer" of the band; five prima donnas would be a recipe for disaster. But as they show again and again they will share the leads around, they will feature the voice that works best for total impact. They literally and vocally support each other. This I am sure began because in growing up together the core three became closest of friends; there's a level of trust there to make this all happen. So you could put together five amazing voices and have rubbish without trust and affection.

    In their early years in an interview Pentatonix stated that they are big fans of Stromae, they went to his concert while they were in Europe and would really liked to collaborate with him. It was 10 years ago, so the chances of their collab are slim, but man, it could have been soooo much fun to listen to whatever they came up with together.

    Love getting to hear what you hear! I usually hear it all as a whole and have a hard time picking out individual parts. I appreciate non-mainstream covers because I would never had heard the original song if not for hearing PTX cover it! Same with their cover of Come Along from the original artist of Cosmo Sheldrake! Cosmo actually appreciated their cover even though they gave it a totally different vibe! It still made people want to go hear the original to find out where PTX got their inspiration from! At some point, I would love to see your reaction to the original (if you've never heard it before) and then listen to the cover by PTX! I appreciate your thoughts and your channel! Thank you!

    Another fantastic, informative reaction. I'm so pleased that you reacted to their cover of Papaoutai, it's not one that's given much love compared to their other tracks but it's so clever and I love the video. I gather Stromae was delighted and flattered by this cover. Scott (and the others, but mostly Scott, obviously) worked really hard with a coach to get the French correct. They have done this for a number of other songs in different languages, e.g. Scott sings in Italian when he sings the Andrea Bocelli part in the Prayer (Mitch sings the Celine Dion part - obviously!) and they sing in Japanese for their Perfume (Japanese girl group) medley. I can't wait for you to react to The Prayer, Bohemian Rhapsody and the Daft Punk medley, the Sound of Silence also Aha live in Singapore and some of their original songs - Love again, Sing and one of their latest ones, I Rise. Also for a very recent cover (so it's Matt, not Avi) their cover of Seal's Kiss from a Rose (the Live Vevo version) is mindblowing!
    I am on tenterhooks waiting now for your PTX covers. Keep'em coming!!!

    I know you have your playlists, and question whether to categorize this song in a capella. Perhaps consider a PTX Playlist since they have so much content, and you mentioned you were going to go down the Pentatonix rabbit hole. Just a suggestion, and for Homefree as well. Radioactive is so so good with Lindsey Sterling playing and dancing. You mentioned rap, and PTX Can't Hold Us cover by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is a total different take on their talent. Most of what PTX does is what Pentaholics call an upgrade. And for most of their songs/ performances I tend to agree. Only a couple of legendary iconic artists they can never beat, such as MJ, Queen, and Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, they come really close in the The Prayer. So happy you see another PTX reaction. They have so much, they will keep you busy for quite some time

    This is one of 3 collaborations ptx has done with Lindsey. They have done Radioactive and Over the river. Lindsey is very talented, both in playing the violin and in dance. She competed on dancing with the Stars in the US and during her final freestyle performance she was dancing while playing. She's incredibly flexible, it's crazy. She's danced with 2 of the pros from dwts, mark Ballas and Derek hough. Mark on the show and then the two did a collaboration with mark's wife in a song that during the official video both Lindsey is playing the violin and mark is playing his guitar while they dance an Argentine tango. Derek has danced with Lindsey in several of her videos. They are all really good friends.

    I’m glad you weren’t aghast that they include instruments on occasion. It would be a shame to leave Kevin’s artistry on the cello out of the picture entirely. You can see more of Kevin’s talent in his cover of Down on his channel (KO Kevin Olusola). He is really impressive. Pentatonix concerts generally feature a section where Kevin plays, usually something classical-related. He’s been joined by Matt on the drums in recent years, and the band has also included Scott on piano on stage and a guest guitarist when they perform Evergreen. They used instruments on many of their Christmas Around the World tracks and during their stint last year on The Masked Singer, so you never know what the future holds. This was great! This song hardly ever gets notice from other reactors...maybe because they don't know the original artist or the French label puts them off.
    Love that you actually know the original well and can dissect the cover with that knowledge. Most people who see it never understood why PTX chose to do the storyline as children's toys, interacting with a lonely boy who's missing his Dad. Stromae's father died when he was very young and his song is about his yearning for him and all the things a young boy does with his father.
    I'm Canadian, so do know a bit of French and Scott is doing a pretty good job with his pronunciation. He used a tutor ( as he did with The Prayer) to get it right.
    Thanks for the great insights into how PTX constructed this... and the differences between the original and their version. Your knowledge and great ear for tones and notes as well as all the other technicalities of music helps us all to better understand WHY we find PTX so good at what the do.
    More pieces with Kevin and Lindsey on instruments:
    Over The River, Radioactive.
    More just Kevin on one of his cellos:

    This is one of three videos that Pentatonix has done in collaboration with Lindsey Stirling. The other two are Radioactive (Imagine Dragons cover) and Over the River, the old Thanksgiving/Christmas poem/song, taken up a notch!
    Interesting side-note on Radioactive - it's pretty early Pentatonix, and at the time Lindsey Stirling had a MUCH larger following on RUclips than PTX did - she was an established artist, whereas they were newcomers. Her collaborating with them was a way of helping them grow their channel and viewers. The video was released on both of their YT channels. If you check out the views on their channels, Lindsey's channel still has nearly 4 times the views that Pentatonix's channel does, even though they've surpassed Lindsey in overall views, subscribers...just about every metric you could think of. She's got a tremendous and very loyal fan base, and it shows there!
    As for Scott's French - I'm not a French speaker (I can barely get by in English, my native language!), so I think the best idea might be to check the comments on the original videos - when PTX sings in different languages (let's see: French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean), the native speakers usually will give their opinions on how well they did. As I remember, Scott's French was considered to be not bad at all for a non-French speaker.

    Awesome informative, but also fun reaction! (sorry I know that the word “fun” isn’t very technical LOL) I liked seeing you being able to enjoy this. I have a feeling this was heavily suggested to you for you to be introduced to Kevin playing the cello. And I believe this one is more mainstream “music video” type than a good portion of their videos. Thank you for posting on a Sunday! You have no idea how much I enjoy your reactions & what they are actually helping me with. I couldn’t click fast enough & was sooooooo happy it was Pentatonix. I’m sure you’ve seen Hallelujah recommended a ton. It’s quite often the first experience reactors have to them & it’s beautiful - arrangement, performance, setting & more. And it’s staying in the Avi time if you aren’t moving to their more recent years. There’s also a live concert version with Avi that you might want to see. But I’d love it if you started with the video. Hearing it live afterwards is like “the cherry on top”. Sorry for such a long comment. Planned to just say Thank you! 🤦‍♀️🤣

    How interesting is it about the background of how the name Stromae came to be! It is a great piece of information.
    I fully agree about the lack of ego when they produce a song. When you react to "The Recording of Evergreen" you will see their process and how they do what's best for the music. They seem to always keep in mind that they're a group not individuals.
    The first time I heard this, it was strange and beautiful to my eyes and ears. The more I listen, the better I like it. I do want a translation though. I get the gist but I will have to look into the full translation.

    @SirHairless Good evening. I am a native French speaking Pentaholic. I have seen them three times in concert (once in Paris and twice in Brussels).
    Scott has a good pronunciation but missed some phonetic links. Sometimes we link the last letter of a word to the beginning of the next one to make it sound better.
    In the sentence « on aura … » Scott says each words separately where we would pronounce « on naura ». A crash course would not teach such a language specific detail.

Well get ready for Kevin and his regular cello (by the name of Beyoncé) and his electric cello (named Jay-Z but he calls it “Mr Carter” because his mom likes that name better 😂) and the intricate work of KO’s relationship to classical music via the modern age. I am sure with your classical background you will find his journey very interesting? Anywho, Happy Sunday! We are absolutely freezing in Oklahoma, which I realize is ridiculous to say in such a dramatic fashion, but our weather can best be described in the extreme, except for the rest of the time it is the same and boring? I'm just watching this now, and really appreciate the information you've shared. I never heard the original, and when I heard Pentatonix's version, I wasn't hugely impressed because I didn't know the original at all.. Years ago, I was watching a compilation of the "Best of the Voice Kids" from around the world, and I saw this boy's version and loved it, so as a result, I found Pentatonix's version rather stiff:

    I know French & Scott's accent is very good (I think he learned it phonetically, like Dimash learned SOS, which is very impressive).
    You didn't mention Lindsey Stirling, who I really like as well. She actually went on one of those "America's Got Talent" type shows (I don't watch them, I just watch compilations of notable performances on them---speaking of which, I know this isn't really what you do, but if you haven't seen Cody Lee's first performance on America's Got Talent, I can't recommend it more strongly; he's blind & autistic, yet he's very, very good, and his mother said that music saved his life).
    Anyway, when she went on to do her violin/dance sort of routine, the judges were brutal to her and said it was terrible, a total mess, etc. (I didn't watch it; I don't like watching people being insulted). But I heard her years later in an interview saying that although it was hard, she realized they were right & doubled down on becoming much better, and she succeeded. IDK how Pentatonix became friendly with her, but they've also done a Christmas song (Over the River) with her, as well as an early version of Radioactive (by Imagine Dragons) where Kevin also plays the cello. The latter was done a number of years ago, but I highly recommend it (especially if you know or like the original).
    And thank you for pointing out that Papaoutai is a play on words "Dad, where are you?" I missed that entirely.
    Your reaction to this really helped me appreciate their version of the song a lot more than I initially did, so thank you for that!
    One genuine question I've always wanted to ask a Brit: you're so close to France, but I don't think I've ever seen a British reactor who spoke French--what's with that? (many Canadians learn at least a bit of French b/c the province of Quebec is primarily French).
    Thanks again x

      Thanks for the comment and for the recommendations!
      To your question about not speaking French: although countries in Europe tend to be tiny compared to the US and Canada, they're very much separate! Even though you can cross several countries in Europe within a few hundred kilometres, it would be as much use learning French for Brits as it would to learn German, or Spanish, or Italian, etc. As everyone speaks English in Britain, there's no need - unless you want to visit these countries 🗺
      So unfortunately, because English is the world's most-spoken language and you can speak English pretty much anywhere else in the world, the education system in the UK puts little effort into languages, which many of us think is a shame. Especially as English is the only language spoken in the UK, overall
      I personally think multilingualism is one of the coolest skills to have 🙌 Where I'm from, you have to choose between e.g. French or German to study in secondary school/high school when you join, but it's only compulsory for 4-5 years, and the standard is poor. And many people choose to drop them after that. When we did exchanges with European students, their English was always soooo much better than our e.g. French or German, probably because they start learning it very young
      I'd love for languages to be a bigger part of UK culture
