- How do YOU stop a gate from sagging ?
In this video I explain and demonstrate the process of properly bracing a wooden gate so that it will not sag and droop. Garden or driveway gates have a tendancy to sag over time. A sagging gate is usually caused by the gates not having the correct bracing installed. There are a few principles to follow when bracing any gate and I go through them in detail in this video.

This is by far the best explanation of how to repair a sagging fence door. Thank you sir, thank you very much.
Thanks Alex, glad you found it helpful !
This is exactly what I was looking for 🤯 thanks for the video!!
Hopefully the video explains the correct way to brace gates of this particular style. Thanks for the comment 👍
Nice. Didn't know the importance of a 45 degree angle.
Thanks, yes the angle is important, just ensure not to go under 45 degrees with the bracing. Anything over 45 degrees is fine within reason. Thanks for the comment 👍
Thank you for sharing this video. You are the first You Tuber to emphasize the 45 degree angle and the use of a single board for bracing. I will be taking your advice and building a garage door this week.
Thanks Lonnie, enjoy your garage door build and thanks for the comment
Excellent explanation and I was looking for this type of video. Thanks so much for your explanation! Helped me immensely !
Great to hear Christen, I am glad the video helped you out.!
Really informative thank you 👍🏻

Good Video Barry that Track saw makes a good cut on them cross braces might have to look at getting one of them :)
Thanks Corey, Yes the track saw is fast becoming my favourite tool ever.........so many uses and so very accurate. If you get one, you will not be disappointed - I assure you 😎👍
Great explanation thank you. I have a gate that needs fixing and your instructions will help me solve the problem. It is a simple framed gate with no diagonal bracing at all! Should be an easy fix. Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺
Glad it helped John and thanks for the comment - much appreciated 👍
Love the videos bud and would love too see more 🙂👍🏼
Thanks, I will start doing more soon, just hard getting the time at the moment 👍
This was great. Thank you. And I really enjoyed your accent the entire time. But really, I’m about to build a gate and this was very helpful thanks again.

Thanks, I'm glad this helped you out - thank you for the comment !
Excellent.. thank you.. solved my gate problem..👍
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment !
Great video, thank you. I thought my back gate was sagging (and catching the ground) because of the hinges. Going to follow your advice and brace it - after re-hanging. You made the transfer of forces very clear.
Thanks Thomas, glad the video was helpful
Great video thanks for the know how!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent! Thanks
You are welcome!
Good video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Fantastic video
Thanks! 😃 I hope this helped you out 👍
The amount of gate you see the wrong way round. They think the diagonal is just to hold the slates a bit better. Very well explained.
Thanks John, yes I come up against a few on my travels.........was making this last night so grabbed the opportunity to make another video, just not had much time the last few months ! Hope you're keeping busy mate 👍😎
Nice tip
Thanks !
*Knew* the angles my guys built the new gate with was wrong. It's 5°'s off in 3 months. Ahaaaaaa.
Can't get it open 🤣 it's now 15mm out at the bottom and normal at the top. Lol.
That's what happens Charlie !
I had a sagging gate. Now I don’t. Thanks for the great tips!
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the comment !
How did you measure and cut the angle so it fitted flush in the brace?
Just lay the brace on the gate and then use a straight edge to eye the line. Mark it and then cut in the mitre saw. You can see how I do that on this video ruclips.net/video/cjVIita2TXs/видео.html
Nice. I'd have braced it the wrong way if I hadn't watched this!
You live and learn 😀 Hopefully the video explained the reasons why you do it this way. Thanks for the comment 👍
I just watched another video from a fence installer and he said the angle should be 45 degrees or LESS. Can you clarify which it is? It seems like once you go past 45 degrees, the brace would be weaker and want to pull apart. Thanks!
Nevermind! I figured it out. You guys are saying the same thing. You were measure the angle between the top board and the brace, he was measuring the angle between the side board and the brace. If your angle should be greater than 45, his should be less. Sorry for the confusion!
Yes, depends where you measure the angle from, but hopefully you figured it out.
with everything secured in place, why without bracing will the gate sag?
Because if it is braced the other way, the force of gravity over time will naturally push the furthest corner from the hinges downwards. If it is braced correctly, that force will be directed to the bottom hinge and will hold the gate in shape.
@@Bacrenfencing Thanks but I still dont get it. If each vertical board is held in place by 2 nails or screws at each horizontal and the hinge is secure, I just dont understand how it can sag. I am not saying it wont, I am just trying to understand why. The hinge at the pivot would been to open up at the top for the top to tilt.
Basically if there are no diagonal bracers, the gate will easily be pulled out of shape. Try it yourself, if you get some fence boards and put in three rails without any bracing, see how easily this can be pulled out of shape. Put one corner on the ground and then pull down on the opposite corner, the gate will basically pivot and go out of shape very easily. Kind of hard to explain........
@@Bacrenfencing thanks for trying
At first you had the brace aiming toward the bottom center - the actual gate brace goes all the way to then bottom left edge. You said that was too far...???
In the video I explain about the importance of keeping the brace over a 45 degree angle, you have to position the brace to achieve that.
