This is a video of me making an affordable garden gate with basic tools.
This gate cost £50 to make. I used some of the old parts from the previous gate. Such as the latch and bolt lock.
This gate is made from new thick feather edge boards and 4 x 1 inch supporting struts. I used new hinges too.
I made sure I hid the screws underneath the feather edge over lap to give the gate a clean look.
I am not a carpenter but enjoy making things and doing DIY.
The music from the video is here open.spotify.com/artist/6lctI... The songs are called 'You make me smile' and 'That's the way I stand'.

Just what I needed. Hope it’s as easy as you made it look.
The first half of the ruclips.net/user/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
I used basic tools on this project just to show it can be done with an electric drill and a handsaw. Ideally, it would be better to have an electric saw such as a circular saw for this for doing this project. Check out my other videos for tools that I’ve used.
Wow.. Thank you for this.. I feel alot more confident to make my own gate now with just a few basic tools... 😍
Thank you - I made my first gate with your instructions
really cool video. love the fact you used basic tools. im gonna make one. thanks
you seem to have the coolest house, back patio and she shed ever. I love this gate too, very nice
really awesome build, nice to see everything inside in use. looking awesome!
Thanks, Yes I am using it every day but my wife is using it to keep her craft work in.
luv ur work, ur house👌
Nice Gate, well done 👍
Wow, impressive! Looks awesome! Thanks for showing the inside.
Yes. my wife made it look nice, but I had to put my bass amp in there.
Angus McGregor nice job to your wife too!
Great video mate!
Yip, good job there.
Cute cave.
Yes that's an Fto 😂. Good choice. Good job. Greetings from Hungary
The garden really looks way better than the crap we sow in the first video.. congratz!
Rodrigo Mazzola Yes the garden was hit hard by building the man cave The grass and the fences were ruined at the end of the build. They are much better now.
Not a bad gate with the tools you used. Personally I would of had two up rights and mortised the frame joints just for more strength and made it the same height as the fence so it’s all inline. But still a great job good effort.
Grant Simmons that sounds good but I don’t know what you mean. I’m just a DIYer building a basic gate.
Gate looks fantastic! Personally I’d prefer you to narrate over the video rather than have the music and text descriptions, but a great video all the same, thanks for sharing your work 👍
3 words compound mitre saw.😀🇨🇦
You showoff lol.. This was awesome and the man cave is as well!!!
Ya 100% better u should make like a grass bed or something neat like that
Killer job! You need an electric handsaw!
Hi, Yes I should have have. I wanted to show how this can be done with using not so many tools.
oh in that case, Bravo!
Thanks for the video. Will be attempting doing this as well. What size/thickness of the feather boards did you use?
mehowq I will check the exact dimensions but essentially it was just the thickest feather edge goodbye
Hi! What size screws did you use for connecting the planks to the 1x4’s? Thanks!
Steve D I used 40mm screws.
Love your man cave, is their a video on how to build?
Yes, check out the other man cave videos ruclips.net/video/KJkzMripQds/видео.html
hay mate, im going to build a new gate soon the winter we had damaged a lot of the fences, the gap is about twice the size as yours, just wanted know how much did it cost you to do that, all the wood
Hi it cost £50 in total. Check out the video description for full info.
What kind of gate latch is that? Where do you buy it?
Miko Gugo Hi it was just a cheap one similar to this. www.locksonline.com/Suffolk-Garden-Gate-Latch-on-Backplate-9222.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwrcH3BRApEiwAxjdPTW2v5O878YOdrjm6KYShJKAfZtors7kv083bwPL7_1x--njdbSjIJxoCC0QQAvD_BwE
Nice gate. Treat yourself to a new handsaw dude. Made my elbows ache watching this 😂
Would of looked better being level with the neighbours fence/gate. Looks a bit odd.
Tom Clark Yes. Good point. But I didn't want to make it too low or the passers by would be able to look over the gate and see me sunbathing naked in my garden.
It's in line with the existing wonky post attached to the house - better higher than shorter as this improves security
I need a husband like him
Aren't the supporting struts attached to eachother?
You can do for extra strength. . I didn’t and it hasn’t effected the rigidity and works okay.
never understood vertical featherboards!!
So this is what he learned by watching BLUE PETER !!
Yes, I have used sticky backed plastic and pipe cleaners.
How much for the old gate ?
Henrique Tardelli You could’ve had it if you wanted but I’ve thrown it out now.
How do I vet potential boyfriends to make sure they are as handy as Angus without chasing them away.
Are you doing a future episode entitled "This is a video of me making an affordable repairs a garden gate post that's hanging off the wall with basic tools".
Not sure what you mean. It’s solid and has been up for some time now and is all working fine.
Buy a new hand saw it would make life easier.
Yes, I just wanted to show how to do this with basic tools.
Screwing feather edge 😂
Yes, screws pull the feather edge together and holds it really firmly, You could use nails but sometimes they come undone over time.
He has done the right thing. If you nail it then the constant movement and vibration will work them out and the whole thing looks loose as a goose.
Chris isn’t laughing anymore
Was he laughing at the innuendo?!
Give it one year and all that feather edge with be split,
Rough
Truth Serum Yes, if I had done this with planed timber, it would be ‘smooth’.
No I mean the join on your bracing
Why not recycle the old one. What a waste.
I recycled the latch and the post. but the gate was knackered. You could have had it.
@@AngusMcGregor I'm in process of trying to recycle a similar gate . It's not too bad. New wood is definitely needed in my case. But if it lasts a year I'll be amazed. I made one of bed slats that felt sturdier than this! 😂
No, No, No and No............OMG
Neil Cook don’t worry. it is only a gate.
YOU SHOULD HAVE TITLED THIS VIDEO " HOW TO BUILD A POOR PEOPLES GATE" LOL WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP
Yes I was doing this on a budget with feather edge I had left over. It still works.
piss poor that sorry
It is a simple basic gate. It works well still today. I could rename it “Piss Gate’!
