I actually never thought that from space you'd still have a curve in a flat earth being it a disc. I'd love to see their reaction to that argument...

If you haven't seen the earth from space how can you confirm the earth is a globe. We are observing it through a concave lens , the eyeball which is also a sphere, this gives the earth a visual illusion of being a sphere.
The debate was Craig on the FTFE channel. He debates the subject weekly, as opposed to the flerfs who debate the subject weakly.

I live on the coast of North Carolina, home to several of the tallest lighthouses in the US. I love to come at flerfers with the simple question: why are lighthouses tall? If there is no curve then you gain no advantage by making them taller. And it would certainly be easier and cheaper to build lighthouses 2 stories tall instead of 20 stories tall. And the lighthouse keepers who had to climb them multiple times a day would certainly demand a shorter lighthouse if a tall one wasn't needed.

I am a Christian, and it's plain stupid for supposed Christians to think the earth is flat because the Bible uses some words that are not literal. For instance, the "angels gather from the four corners of the earth," but then it would have to be a flat square or flat rectangle, which you covered. For me, the biggest argument against flat earth besides the eclipses is that the seasons are opposite on the northern and southern hemispheres and the stars that are visible in the northern hemisphere are not visible from the southern hemisphere and vice aversa. Long before Jesus Christ they calculated the circumference of the earth at the equator correctly. In the beginning, God created- Genesis 1 is absolutely literally true, and the book of Revelation is true also, so people need to read the Bible and find the truth of Jesus Christ now. You have a really beautiful dog too. God bless.

That's actually two very good points. Yes, you would see a straight horizon in a disc only when you are at sea level, not from every altitude and place on Earth. And the only way you can get the same distance to horizon wherever you are is, with a sphere. The disc as per definition, has an edge

After trying to discuss with flat earthers and other conspiracy thinkers I have ended on the conclusion that the quote is not only very precise, it is extremely fitting:

We flat earthers feel the same about globers, mostly because they keep trying to squeeze the two theories into one which is utterly ridiculous. Both theories work well but cannot be combined as they are based on completely different observations.

It doesn't take much to understand that the flat earth hypothesis (because it is NOT a theory) is wrong.
I have been working within natural science and cartography for over 30 years and there is nothing in the flat earth hypothesis that adds up. It is basically lots of different suiting evidence, but put together it doesn't hold water.
Even the old Egyptians calculated the circumference of a spherical globe down to a few miles error.
We have known that the earth is a sphere for more that 4000 years.
It is however correct that earth is not a PERFECT sphere....circumference measured around the equator is slightly longer then measured across the poles and this is due to the centrifugal force that arises from the rotation of the earth. This does not mean that the earth is flat, it is just not a perfect sphere.
I have heard that within the flat earth society some people denies that we have satellites in orbit around the earth.
If that was thru why can I calculate the delay time on a phone call between US an Europe. And how does a satellite telephone work at all out in the wilderness miles and miles away from the nearest antenna station, where you clearly have no reception on you mobile....how is the satellite telephone working....and how is GPS, Galileo and other positioning system working.

Also, flerfers don't seem to understand what it means for something to be called a theory in a scientific context. A theory is the highest level, theories do not get 'proven' into facts, hypothesis get proven into theories. All the 'laws' of physics and thermodynamics are theories.

I was sitting on a verandah of a house on the east coast of Tasmania. The verandah had a horizontal balustrade. Sitting with my eye at the level of the horizontal balustrade, I could easily see the horizon was curved,
the horizon can never have curve, the simple reason, each direction you look in will be the same distance away from you....that's why it appears, and is, perfectly flat. fact.
According to flat Earthers, Tasmania doesn't exist.

This is an illusion of the eye as your eyeball is also a curved lens. The eye itself is a ball , aka eyeball, therefore anything being viewed through the lens of a spherical view will appear spherical.

Gender is determined through a combination of biological, psychological & so iological factors. Sex is determined solely by biology.
One of my favourite videos is of Prof Brian Cox taking a flight in an RAF jet and flying towards the setting sun at a location where the Earths rotational speed is just around 600Mph (yes flat Earthers the Earth has different rotational speeds) and he watched the setting sun rising back up over the horizon, he was flying faster than the Earths rotation at that point. It was beautiful. Oh and why Earth is a ball, - Gravity. :)

They'll hit you with perspective limiting the distance eyes can see so they can't see the edge of the disk. Whenever we point out a flat earth would not have a sharply defined horizon but one where atmospheric distortion, light scattering and pollution would make the flat earth horizon fuzzy with only very large objects showing up they claim perspective and vanishing point creates the sharp line. They'll use the same argument to counter your argument.

Another way to think about it is that a flat earth horizon would appear to go UP instead of down. You would have all of the planet obscuring your view of the night sky in every direction. The sky would be 40% of your total view and Earth would be 60%, the opposite of how we see things with the sky being about 60% of what we see, and planet being 40%. Roughly.
The response to such claims of perspective limit would be "how far away are the stars that we can see on the horizon then?"

How does a Flat Earther explain Gravity? Gravity is after all the pull of the earth because of it's great mass. But if the earth was even close to being flat, that pull would start to feel diagonal as you got further from the center.

Horizon is circular because its EQUIdistant from the observer , that's why it appears to be "curved" , but it's only curved horizontally , not vertically .

Flat Earth theory doesn't claim that the earth, as a singular entity, is a disc. Rather, earth is a realm. Whatever is beyond the Antarctic is unknown to us, but the plane does not terminate there; it continues indefinitely. Hence, there would be no visible curve.
So then, the videos showing the earth to not be this "realm" completely disprove this flavor of flat earth theory?
Start with the evidence, not the conclusion. Unless you can find more evidence for this realm earth theory then what exists for globe earth, then globe earth is the correct theory.
You can’t see the curvature, but even with a powerful telescope you can’t see the land on the other side. Also why does the sun dip down behind the horizon at dusk rather than disappearing into the distance?

I was sitting on the balcony of my hotel room once not long ago, looking out at the Gulf of Mexico. (The hotel was right on the beach, and I was on the second floor.) I was in a chair with my feet up on the balcony railing, and that put the horizon basically right at the level of the railing. I noticed that I could actually see the curvature a little when I moved my view from one end of the railing to the other.

If you've ever been on a cruise ship or a deep sea boat, you _can_ see the curvature on the horizon with the naked eye. But that's something they never do.

How about we start with something simple, like one real picture of what we live on, showing the entire creation, that includes stars and real background, that has no artist renderings or CGI. First. How can you be so sure that these pictures are fake? Sure CGI has come a long way. But it is still not really there yet. Just look at any space movie, and it was defenetly not there in the 50s and 60s when CGI wasn't even a thing yet. Am I right in saying it wouldn't matter if the pictures were fake or not, because you would still call them fake?
Secondly, what would the soviet union have gained from partisipating in this lie during the cold war, and why isn't any other orginazation or contry trying to expose NASA or the US for these lies? Even though the world was and still is divided, they all seeme to agree on the shape of the earth, and that the moon landing, the ISS etc are real. Isn't that weird?

@@faithismespeaks6848 Since you ignore all pictures and claim cgi eventhough we have pictures that predate CGI etc there is no point in showing you them. Plus we would have to explain exposure with cameras etc and that would go right over your head. Let's stick to the basics then. All measurements and maps confirm globe. Where is your measurement to support a fe and a functioning fe map? If you cannot provide those then the earth is not flat. In the meantime the globe earth measurements and maps work so well they are used daily by people all around the world to travel accurately. How could that be possible if the earth is any other shape than a globe?

They look out at sea and say “see it just ends so it’s gotta be flat” welllll if you look at the ocean most of the time you will hear looking in the directions of land, sooo if it was flat we would be able to see the EU looking from the east coast and see Russia from the west. Now before you say we can’t see that far, look up at the stars at nights, you are looking billions of light years away, we can see farther than the earth is wide
Yup. My favorite thing to ask flerfs is why can't we radar the shoreline of the other side of the ocean? Radar doesn't care about things like 'light dispersion' due to water vapor or dust.
If we’re standing on a giant sphere the ground will gradually slope away in every direction giving the viewer an illusion of a 360 degree horizontal line. No experiments are necessary. It’s a concept you can grasp from life experience, or not. Personally I’m amused by flat-earthers and I hope they never become extinct.

I could see the curvature of the earth when I was at "Point Danger" at the Gold Coast looking over the Pacific Ocean 20-30 years ago, it is very slight.... but also just on the horizon there would be large tanker/cargo ships sailing by as well.... so you could see ships off to the far right and on the far left and if you drew a line from the top of one ship to the other, they would not be able to see each other because of the curvature of the earth...... the ships must have been 10-15 kms out and no idea how far apart they were... and also on top of that, because of the distance of the ships (If I had a telescope or Binoculars at the time) I would not be able to see the lower part of the ship that is in the water... because once again, the curvature of the earth.... so, if you go to Australia or some other beach that has large ship traffic that are just on the horizon, and make observations you can see the curvature of the earth.... like I said it is very slight but you can see it
Did Aristotle recognize the spherical shape of the earth 2300 years ago or did he simply not know the phenomenon of perspective?
Already 2300 years ago Aristotle was convinced of the spherical shape of the earth.
He had observed that ships appeared at the horizon first with the mast top. If the ship comes closer then one sees the superstructures and at the end the whole ship.
It also worked the other way around: when a ship left the harbour and you looked at the ship, it became smaller and smaller in the eye of the viewer. First the hull of the ship disappeared, then the superstructure, until in the end even the mast was no longer visible. Then the ship could no longer be seen with the naked eye.
The thought at that time that the earth must be a sphere and therefore the ships had to disappear at some point behind the curvature of the earth was not to be dismissed.
So does the curvature of the earth exist and is the earth a sphere as Aristotle claimed?
Now let us follow again the ship that goes out of the harbour to the ocean. As we already know, the ship becomes smaller and smaller in the eye of the viewer. First the hull of the ship disappears, then the superstructure, until finally the mast also disappears. Then you can no longer see it with the naked eye.
THEY sell this to us as the curvature of the earth.
Now comes the surprise.
If you zoom in the above described situation (ship no longer visible) with a high zoom camera like a NIKON P 900 or 1000 in the direction of the disappeared ship, then you suddenly see the complete ship again.
How does this work?
The previous disappearance of the ship is the result of the limitation of our eye. We have lost sight of the ship. The process is called perspective.
Aristotle did not know it.
Thus, Aristotle does not provide evidence for a curvature of the earth and therefore not for a globe.

Fact of the matter is, if we can see fucking Venus along the horizon; if the Earth was flat, then we should be able to see Japan from North America. Or even South America. If we look out on a clear night, we should be able to see the lights of Tokyo fairly easily. With a decent telescope, that is. Though, during the summer time, it would still be light out during the evening over there. Which raises an interesting thought...seeing dusk in Japan through a telescope during the middle of the night in Canada lol

The answer to this biggest question is very simple, the moment you understand the flat earth system, which is that a closed system constituting of the earth and the sky cannot be created by coincidence and cannot explained based on such argument, but only by a creator. When the build-up of ice becomes more dense than the air under it it falls down. Depending on how big those pieces of ice are (which determines how fast they melt) they're either hail, snow or rain once they reach the ground. The greenhouse you're talking about isn't so big that it touches space so water vapour condensing on it never gets cold enough to freeze enough to become ice which is why you've never seen it snow in a greenhouse. There!

Back in college, one of my professors was lecturing us on the curvature of planets.
The example he used was Earth and once he’d explained how scientists measure the Earths curve, one of the students asked how much of the Earths curve you could see from the surface.
My professor answered “easily less than 1%.”

I find the globe earth and flat earthers can't come to terms with a earth larger than we are told. They keep basing the curve on the belief that earth is only so big. Then by tracking the Antarctica coast line being far longer than believed to be and that General Byrd (I may be wrong of that rank) has scouted deep into Antarctica only to find extra land. And extra land is literally extraterrestrial simplified. So the mote and more I hear globe and flat I'm continually becoming more believing of a earth far larger than we are told and that both parties are correct in the idea as our relm looks flat but our globe is still true and our borders are not as they should seem

I wouldn’t call it indoctrination, the earth is just widely known as a globe because it is observable and measurable as one, whereas flat and earth-centric models simply don’t make sense without conflicting details or magic paracausal forces. If there was an earth-centric or flat model that is consistent with all natural occurring phenomena (plus other things like human travel methods) on earth then it might be taken seriously, but such a thing hasn’t been made.

The globe model came about from people observing and measuring the earth (and stars, planets, moons) over thousands of years, proving or disproving previous knowledge/theories as our ability to observe more precisely increases with technology. Our understanding of the globe earth changes over time because the scientific community have open minds to new findings. And by “model” I don’t just mean a little toy globe, I mean an accurate scalable simulation of what is observed and measured in reality. You are fundamentally misunderstanding both the meaning of the word model here.
What I am saying is that flat earthers have never produced a model (a mathematically consistent visualization) of a flat earth that isn’t vastly oversimplified, untested, and contradictory to both itself and our observable reality. This is because flat earth logic comes from a lack of understanding and a lack of care for the scientific method. Nothing is measured, and each detail is made up to conform to your beliefs and biases. The globe earth model was created by literally measuring the earth, mapping and calculating the trajectories of the stars, calculating observable forces, and then trying to figure out how it all fits spatially. The flat earth community is not taken seriously because they already have a conclusion that they are stuck to before it is tested, that they then are trying to fit everything from the real world into. It’s completely unscientific.
On top of that I often see flat earthers completely disregard solid evidence of globe earth simply because they can’t understand it, instead they choose to call it ridiculous so that they don’t feel dumb. Meanwhile they are making up magic answers to suit their untested beliefs that would make far less sense if they cared to go into any detail.
And yes I have seen evidence of both a globe earth with my own eyes. I’m lucky enough to have been on a plane where I could see the curvature of the earth. Hell, I can even see it from the beach. Also I can see that during a lunar eclipse the shadow the earth casts on the moon always has circular curve. Flat earthers are too attached to their preconceived conclusions that they forget to simply just look at the natural world around them and draw conclusions from that, not the other way around.

A man named Eratosthenes measured the angle of the shadows of two rods, at noon on the summer solstice, at set locations a known distance apart. One cast no shadow as the sun was directly above it, and the other did as it was at an angle of about 7.2 degrees. Using the measurement of the angle which is approximately 1/50th of a circle, the distance between the two points multiplied by 50 gave him an estimate that is actually pretty close.
This is sort of a simplifed version of the story but I can also provide more detailed sources that have visualizations.
Flat earthers however, say that this difference in shadows is caused by the sun being much closer than what has been measured, making the sun cast rays on earth at different angles rather than being near-parallel. Though this causes a lot of inconsistencies and contradictions when considering many other natural occurrences. The distance of celestial bodies was also estimated way back in ancient greece as well using parallax, how closer objects will appear to shift more than farther objects when viewed at two different angles. Like when you hold a finger in front of your face and alternate closing one eye and the other, your finger will appear to shift back and forth much more drastically than something farther away in the background. They knew that the sun was far enough away to cast near parallel rays on the earth because they calculated it. They were super smart back then but they still didn’t have a clear and complete vision/understanding of the whole earth. We have a more complete understanding now not because anything was pre-assumed, but because with better technology and more knowledge we have supported many of their theories and also disproven many. The nature of the scientific process is not to look only for evidence to support your theories/conclusions. It’s about letting your findings show you if what was previously thought is correct, kinda close, or way off.

Having been born in a seaside town, I grew up watching ships come over the horizon. First one sees the masts, funnels etc...then gradually the rest of the ship. Looking through binoculars the effect is quite obvious: the ship is traveling over a curved horizon.
Also, there are highpoints at the seaside that are up to about 100 feet. Someone standing at a highpoint will see the ship before the person at the shoreline... again demonstrating the curvature of the Earth.
Visual compression is why ships disappear from the bottom first. Raising your elevation 100 feet as you said allows less compression than 6 ft therefore the effect takes longer. Not trying to upset you. Just want you to understand how the human eye works. You would like a thought experiment imagine yourself standing next to a block wall 5 miles long and your shoulder is up against it. 500 ft away there is a similar wall. You would only be able to count a certain number of blocks on the wall your shoulder is against before they all compressed into an indistinguishable blur. But on the wall 500 ft away you would be able to count blocks much further down the line. This is compression. My point being the reason ships disappear bottom first is because you're six feet off the ground with thousands of feet above you causing more compression below your eye line then above it. In the wall example the same Works side to side. Hope this helps
@@twindragon64ify That's all fine and good, but your thought experiment lacks something travelling up the walls to simulate the ship. If we compare the two situations, by describing the wall you've only described the sea, and not how compression would affect a bigger object clearly protruding from the wall.
Still, I see how compression could be a legitimate concern, especially as my own eyesight isn't doing that great at a distance, but it's nothing you can't mitigate with a pair of binoculars or other similar equipment.
Regardless, there's actually a really good clip made by the RUclipsr Folding Ideas, in a video essay called "In search of a flat earth". There's another video of his called "The Minnewanka curve experiment" that I personally haven't watched, but that I presume goes in more detail on his setup and the experiment himself.
In the clips he shot, you can clearly see that by moving the camera up and down a few feet, an entire vehicle (and generally, the trees on the shoreline) on the other side of the lake appear and disappear behind the curve. That's not what compression looks like, because the base vehicle isn't slowly becoming indistinguishable from the water because it's too small and too close to it, it's instead being covered by a clear edge.
I really recommend taking a look at it, it's some beautiful footage.
@@azuriiru I don't think you understood the point I was making. Compression on a convex lens is in all directions. So yes lifting a camera up does does allow you to see farther but not because of curvature. It's because my lifting the camera you are decreasing the compression beneath the camera which in turn allows the viewer to see a little farther. And to the point of a protrusion on our wall mind thought As you move the protrusion farther and farther away yes it would disappear given enough distance. The wall thought was simply to show how compression works left and right. If I had my left shoulder up against one wall and there was another wall 100 yd to my right I would be able to count brakes much much farther on the right wall and I would the left due to compression. Turn 90 degrees and you're standing on one wall and the other wall is a ceiling 100 yards above my head and I will be able to count the bricks much farther above me than the ones I'm standing on. Now take that and make it a man standing on the ocean. His eyes are 6ft above the water and he has thousands of feet above. Same effect. 6 ft of compression below the line of sight and at the same time thousands of feet above the line of sight is compressing at the same rate but it's 6 ft compared to thousands so the bottom disappears first. Not a hard concept to grasp once you understand. And I am not being demeaning. At one point I didn't understand this. Before you spend any more time with me research visual compression and how the eye works. My point is ships disappearing Over the Horizon is not a good argument for a globe. There is a counter argument which also explains shifts disappearing over Horizon. I've heard the joke that if the Earth is flat there would be nothing on it because cats would have knocked everything over the edge. Thank God cats don't like water. Or we wouldn't be having this argument. There would be nothing LOL

i've always been confused by the whole "you can't see the curve" argument... because you absolutely can. If you were to stand on a boat in the middle of the ocean so that the horizon is unobstructed by land masses you would see that the horizon is an unbroken line that goes all the way around you, forming a circle. So, yes, you can easily see the curve of the horizon, you just need to know what to look for.

It's actually really cool seeing the curve. I remember flying from LA to Japan being the first time I'd seen it personally. It was slight, but it was most certainly there along with a very cool gradient from sky blue to a nice deep blue.
That's not the Earth's curve because the curve is not visible from the ground. What you are refering to is the circle of our limited line of sight. To see the actual curve we would have to be up at the edge of space.

I've always thought that the horizon would look the same whether on a globe or a disc. Well done on being the first RUclipsr to actually do a video about it (first that I've seen anyway).
Actually no. On a disc there would be no horizon unless you where very near the edge. Elsewhere the sea would just fade into a blue haze in the distance.

On a globe, the horizon dip is the same everywhere you look at. On a flat disk, the horizon would be at eye level when you look toward the north pole but, the closer you'd get to the edge, the more dramatic the horizon dip would be when looking away from the pole.

Following on with the basketball video. I love the one where they dump a bucket of water on a ball and show that water does not cling to a curved surface. Well, about the 3rd time I saw that I said to myself...well the ball is wet right? And so, I did the math using an NBA Basketball. It turns out that if the water on the basketball was about the same depth as a human hair, then it would be covered with water that is about the average depth of the oceans on Earth. Which I found hilarious. I know the mechanism holding the water on the Basketball is different. I also know that if I had chosen a different ball to model then the result would be different. I just thought it was funny that it works pretty closely for a basketball.
The water tending to run off the ball might also have something to do with the gravitational field of the basketball being somewhat dwarfed by that of the planet right beneath it, which is also something that flat-earthers seem to overlook.

This picture will show a flat edge, if you use Google search and it provides the original youtube video that this single picture was taken from, and you then watch the video you will see the edge of the earth bend sharply down at the edges then a bit later it will be flat then a bit later it will bend up at the edges. This indicates that a fish eye lens was used to film the video, and what the flat earther has done is watch the video, and as soon as they see the edge looking flat they pause the video and take a screen shot then post it as proof of flatness. Which is clearly a lie,yet if we post a picture of curvature they scream "Fish-eye lens".

The other sentence means that when you look at the video where they took the screenshot from, you can see that it is unstable. This means that the earth’s horizon would look flat, curved, and convex (the opposite of curved as in curved in the other direction). They just took a single screenshot of one frame where the earth looked flat instead of the other two as in the original video.

Can you see all of the elements on the periodic table? Can you see in the dark as well as a primitive lifeform? And maybe the bending of light that you see is because of gravity, not because there is an actual bend. And since science doesn't know what gravity is, how can they say any of this is wrong?
And any pictures of Earth from space are all flat. Pictures are 2 dimensional, which means flat. So how can any 2 dimensional pictures prove something is 3 dimensional? Your eyes work like cameras and capture images in 2D. A process of the brain converts them to 3D. If we are in a simulation, which no astrophysicists can disprove, the brain converting images to 3D is part of the design...

The famous Concorde photo was taken in April 1985 from an RAF Tornado fighter. The Concorde slowed down from it's usual cruising speed of Mach 2, at 60,000 feet, so the stripped-down Tornado could keep up with it for 4 minutes, as it was running out of fuel.
And here I always thought that it was taken by a Blackbird as it flew past the Concorde. 😁

If yoh can't see to the edge of the pizza (deflection, refraction, obstruction) then this example is moot...it only works if you assume the edge is within your visual range, it is not in their examples...same reason we don't have an ice wall picture (besides it doesnt exist) they don't believe we can get that close to the edge. How do flat earthers explain the fact that ham radio operators lose contact with each other on an apparently flat surface? We can talk to the ISS via ham radio as it passes overhead, but we can't talk to someone ten miles away unless one or both of us are elevated. Look, it's this simple. IF the earth is flat, then the sun would have to fade out of sight into the distance as it moves away along it's path above the earth. And so you should be able to bring it back into view using a telescopic zoom lens on a camera. BUT, no such video exists.
In fact, the contrary is true. There ARE videos however, that show the sun being brought back into view using a drone by RAISING the camera higher into the sky. IF the earth were flat, this would make no difference and have no effect whatsoever, but it does.
So this PROVES that the earth is not flat and the sun does not fade from view into the distance, but rather drops over the horizon on a globe earth.
Now, I have to challenge anyone, of course, at this point to debunk my comment and produce a video of the sun being brought back into view using a telescopic zoom lens.

In any case you could still photograph the Sun with an infra red camera even after it has passed from sight with shorter wave lengths of light. None of this ever happens in reality so the Earth is NOT flat. The OP is simply stating what flat Earthers say, not that he believes it.
