I know this is an older video, but to answer your question about the tress you saw in Tennessee and Kentucky that were blooming, assuming they were a dark pink-reddish color, those are called redbud trees. They are beautiful here (Kentucky) in early spring. Enjoyed your video, btw. This tuned out to make a very lovely spring pillow.

I live in Ohio, and if the trees were reddish purple in color, then they are called Red Buds and they grow wild. I also have them in my yard. If they are white trees, then they are likely dog woods. Hello Julia. Thank you for the special tutorial. Yes, I’ve done some bobbin work, but only In straight or curvy lines. I used size 8 DMC perle cotton. On my Elna 6003 I didn’t adjust my tension. However, I did not pass the bobbin thread end through the little finger on my drop in bobbin case. It’s been awhile, so I will be experiment with bobbin work in the future, but on a different machine as my Elna is not operating. Your bird stitching turned out great. Warmer weather will come and I’m sure it will be beautiful where you live.

Hi Dorothy, The snow is melting fast! We should have 60' by Easter. You will have to give bobbin work a try. It is really easy and adds an embroidered look. I use to do a lot of it but haven't for a long time. It's fun to revisit those long lost techniques. Have a great week. Julia
if you havent done bobbin work- or if you are using a new type of thread, i really suggest doing a practice stitch on a scrap (similar in weight to your main fabric). also, from experience... if you think you will be doing bobbin work that does require adjusting the tension screw? and you can find a SPARE bobbin case? get one you save for that- mark it with nail polish or something. once you adjust that screw it can be very hard to get it back to neutral (base tension). i just keep a spare bobbin case for bobbin work

Very inspiring! Saw another film the other day on RUclips about bobbin embroidery and I’m really keen on trying it out. Here in Stockholm area in Sweden we have also had some really cold weather but the few snowflakes melted during the day. Next week looks promising, right in time for the Easter. How did you iron in the freezer paper - i didn’t see you use heat n bond? Why did you use freezer paper for writing rather than the tear away paper you used before? The white blooming trees on the edge of the woods are likely dogwood. Sometimes they’re a light pink too. There are also a deep pink blooming tree now called Redbuds. Spring in the south is beautiful, but it has its price.....PoLLeN!

Hi, I am so glad you are enjoying my channel. I use regular all purpose Coats and Clark thread for top thread. Sometimes I use a multicolored thread. I usually use bobbin thread in the bobbin. Bobbin thread is polyester, slightly thinner and doesn't have as much lint. It comes in black and white. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Julia

Hi Julia, awesome project. Already watched some of your videos. Could you please, give me some substitutes supplies to work with? it's hard to find the heat-n-bond lite and Stitch-n-Tear- Stabilizer in my country. I find some supplies in the online shop, i.e hot and melt adhesive iron patch and tear away water-soluble embroidery stabilizer or washable white glue.
Hi Julia! Can I ask please, when you do the writing - why do you sew onto the freezer paper and then tear it away? Why not just write directly onto the fabric without the paper? Thank you
If the tree had white blooms (or more rarely pink), they were dogwood trees. If they were lavender (various shades, dark to light) they were redbud trees. They bloom simultaneously in April and are especially beautiful growing among evergreen trees.
Hi, Yes! To do the free motion, the feed dogs should be disengaged. On some machines you do this with a lever that lowers them. Some have a cover that snaps over the feed dogs. You need a darner or quilter's foot that fits your machine. ( One may have been included with your machine.) Machines have either a low or high shank on their feet. Once this is determined for your machine, you should be able to order one that fits. Hope all this helps! It's a lot of fun!
Hi Julia, I've been watching the weather, especially the MN. weather. So many without power....so many inches of snow!!! Are you close to Minneapolis? We got a dusting of snow that changed to rain. Good to see you back and on line. I've done some bobbin work using Razzle Dazzle thread by Ricky Tims, made by Superior Threads. Wonder if they still make it? I used to purchase it at my quilt store. I love the variety of colors of the metallics that was mixed with the thread. Good to see you back. I hope that the sun does its work and melts off the snow. Those deer outside your window were beautiful.
Hi Phyllis, We live NW of Minneapolis, closer to Fargo, ND. My son lives in St. Paul. They got a lot of wet sloppy snow. We did too- around 8". The good thing is the temps should be in the 60's later this week and most of this stuff should be gone by Easter. Bobbin work is fun because you can use a bunch of different threads. Really nice, you make it look easy.... I tried this today on my new machine with a hoop and it just didn't work, the needle kept on making holes in the fabric and wouldn't pick up the stitch. I guess the fabric was too thin and I didn't start it off correctly??
Bobbin works takes some trial and error to get the tension correct. It does sound like your fabric is too thin and your tension might be too tight. Julia
Hi Brenda, Here in the US, freezer paper is found in our grocery stores. Usually by the paper products etc. It has a waxy side and a paper side. The waxy side can be ironed onto fabric and easily removed. I'm not sure if it is sold internationally. Perhaps someone else will chime in. Thanks so much for watching! Julia

I tend to not put the bobbin thread through the bobbin tension area, I just leave it loose it works well with larger threads

So happy i found you. I am enjoying your videos. Questions.....why did you put heat n bond on top of your fabric - if it was on top how were they ironed on? How did you iron in the freezer paper - i didn’t see you use heat n bond? Why did you use freezer paper for writing rather than the tear away paper you used before? Could you have done the writing with iron disappearing ink? Thanks!!!

The white blooming trees on the edge of the woods are likely dogwood. Sometimes they’re a light pink too. There are also a deep pink blooming tree now called Redbuds. Spring in the south is beautiful, but it has its price.....PoLLeN!

Very late response but the KY trees blooming in April are probably red buds. They have a beautiful purple flowers all over.

Purple trees are Redbuds, white flowers trees either Bradford pear trees or Dogwoods, pink could be dogwood or cherry blossoms.

El papel en el cual calquio puedes usar de la marca Reynolds Grap, Freezer paper, del lado brillante, es el lado que se plancha, y del otro donde calqueas. Los demás materiales, una tela de lino medio fuerte, o mantasucia, que sería el fondo, y diferentes tipos de tela para hacer el trabajo.

Hi, I am so glad you are enjoying my channel. I use regular all purpose Coats and Clark thread for top thread. Sometimes I use a multicolored thread. I usually use bobbin thread in the bobbin. Bobbin thread is polyester, slightly thinner and doesn't have as much lint. It comes in black and white. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Julia

Hi Julia, awesome project. Already watched some of your videos. Could you please, give me some substitutes supplies to work with? it's hard to find the heat-n-bond lite and Stitch-n-Tear- Stabilizer in my country. I find some supplies in the online shop, i.e hot and melt adhesive iron patch and tear away water-soluble embroidery stabilizer or washable white glue.

If the tree had white blooms (or more rarely pink), they were dogwood trees. If they were lavender (various shades, dark to light) they were redbud trees. They bloom simultaneously in April and are especially beautiful growing among evergreen trees.

Hi, Yes! To do the free motion, the feed dogs should be disengaged. On some machines you do this with a lever that lowers them. Some have a cover that snaps over the feed dogs. You need a darner or quilter's foot that fits your machine. ( One may have been included with your machine.) Machines have either a low or high shank on their feet. Once this is determined for your machine, you should be able to order one that fits. Hope all this helps! It's a lot of fun!
Hi Julia, I've been watching the weather, especially the MN. weather. So many without power....so many inches of snow!!! Are you close to Minneapolis? We got a dusting of snow that changed to rain. Good to see you back and on line. I've done some bobbin work using Razzle Dazzle thread by Ricky Tims, made by Superior Threads. Wonder if they still make it? I used to purchase it at my quilt store. I love the variety of colors of the metallics that was mixed with the thread. Good to see you back. I hope that the sun does its work and melts off the snow. Those deer outside your window were beautiful.
Hi Phyllis, We live NW of Minneapolis, closer to Fargo, ND. My son lives in St. Paul. They got a lot of wet sloppy snow. We did too- around 8". The good thing is the temps should be in the 60's later this week and most of this stuff should be gone by Easter. Bobbin work is fun because you can use a bunch of different threads. We lived in Minot N.D. for 4 years, then were transferred to Rudyard MI. until my husband retired from the Air Force. Meant to tell you that I like your idea about using pieces of scraps for the bird's bodies.
I used to do craft shows in Minot. I grew up on a farm west of Bismarck. I know ND well.

Really nice, you make it look easy.... I tried this today on my new machine with a hoop and it just didn't work, the needle kept on making holes in the fabric and wouldn't pick up the stitch. I guess the fabric was too thin and I didn't start it off correctly??
Bobbin works takes some trial and error to get the tension correct. It does sound like your fabric is too thin and your tension might be too tight. Julia

Hi Brenda, Here in the US, freezer paper is found in our grocery stores. Usually by the paper products etc. It has a waxy side and a paper side. The waxy side can be ironed onto fabric and easily removed. I'm not sure if it is sold internationally. Perhaps someone else will chime in. Thanks so much for watching! Julia
