They're magnificent, those grips are gorgeous, and I can't wait to buy one of the 686 Mountain Gun models in 357 along with that new no-lock Model 10 when I can find them!
S&W discontinuing the Mountain Gun was just as stupid as Colt not making the Python. I can't wait to see these guns in person. The Mountain Gun - especially with no lock - should be a big seller and is by far one of the best new releases for 2025.

"Mountain" was a term for ultra lightweight hunting rifles long before the original "Mountain Revolver" debuted. I'm as excited for the plated trigger and hammer as I am for the lockless frame.
Turns out it actually isn't that simple. They re-engineered their lockwork around the Hillary hole back then, so they have re-re-engineer to get rid of it.
According to the rep in a different video with James, S&W is doing away with the locks on all of their guns. It'll probably take a bit of time but awesome news.

Colt had teething issues but they are good to go, no issues with rear sights or anything else but we don't get a large quantity of any of these.
There is nothing wrong with the new generation Colt revolvers from 2020 to now. The 2020 Python and 2021 Anaconda are way stronger, more durable and have better triggers than the original guns from decades ago. As thousands of other people have said, if S&W wants to be king of the revolver world again, they really need to pull their head out of their ass and get their quality control improved.
I bought mine in a 90s in 44 magnum. They did shave off some of the metal on the cylinder in the front. I don’t know how much weight they saved, but that was another area and I’m proud to say I still own it. I used it for my canoeing gun in the Adirondack mountains and camping.

Huge step in the right direction for that 686 - NO LOCK, the superior "ball detent" crane lock up(overdue on all Smith revolvers), 7 shot, reinforced cone area. The only mild criticism for me is I'd prefer a 3.5" barrel(like the old model 27) in semi bull weight and the front sight is REALLY tall(like a target sight) and looks way too "snaggy" for me so I'd want this rugged harsh conditions piece with a gutter rear sight and a half moon front(maybe with a red insert). A flat classic cylinder release would be a really classy touch too. PS - GET IT AND ALL THE NEW REVOLVERS ON THE CA LIST!

I'd love to see S&W offer 5" inch barrels on their revolvers. I bet a 5" inch mountain gun would still be pretty handy but you'd get just a little more bore and sight radius.
I have three S&W Model 29s. My favorite, by far, is an early 2000s Performance Center 'Mountain Gun'. (blued) The best Model 29 ever made, IMO. Glad to see them making it again. If you've ever considered owning a Model 29 (629)...THIS is the one to get. No mention of the 'lightish' .357 revolver?
If you want another cool Lipsey's special you should get the Model 646. I fell in love with mine from two rows away at a gun show. Look it up. That's the only way you'll find it now.
The X-frame triple lock bearing lock up is on this Mountain Gun and the reinforced forcing cone of the model 69 so durable stainless steel and superb design attributes.
They haven't done the insignia on the right side since the late-1960s/early-1970s IIRC. I believe custom-ordered insignias can be put onto the right side/sideplate in the past.
I have to get on the waiting list for the 686 but if S&W wants more of my money, show me the 625 in 45 Colt. While not traditional to the mountain gun, a 5/5.5 inch barrel would be a nice touch.
Nahhhh. You still can’t replace the old ones. Just like the new pythons didn’t displace the vintage ones. These are cool guns though if you want a brand new one with a warranty.

Although I’m certainly not in my 70s. I’m only in my late 30s and I much prefer pinned and recessed vintage Smiths. If you see them side by side you’d probably prefer the old ones too. It’s why they sell for a lot more today.

I had a weird dream the other day. I was hiking in the mountains with my S&W Mountain Gun and James was a bear. I didn't have time to draw my revolver when he knocked me to the ground. Instead of mauling me he ripped my pants off. That's when my alarm went off and I woke up. But for some reason my underwear was full of mayonnaise.
Seeing what S&w is doing makes me hopeful that in maybe 5-10 years they could actually catch up to their competitors. Just think we could get a no lock, 6 round, ball detent j frame in the next decade. Watch out Taurus 856!
That 629 looks a little similar to the gp100 match champion. The gp100 has a more vertical grip, but the half lug barrel reminds me of the match champion version.
@ I’ve never held the S&W, but based on the research that I did before purchasing my GP100, the general consensus seemed to be that the Ruger GP100 is sturdier (and some argue more reliable), but the S&W has a better trigger and is sleeker due to its forged frame versus Ruger’s cast frame. I don’t know for certain on which is more reliable , but based on the hundreds of comments I’ve read, it seemed that the GP100 has a better reputation for less issues while the S&W is smoother out of the box. I own a Kimber K6S 3” that I carry, and I like that trigger better than my GP100, but my GP100 definitely feels like it will outlast my K6S.

I recall taking the sideplate off my brand-new 625 a few years ago. The inside looked as though the gun had been used as the shop floor dustpan.

I hope they bring back long barrels on revolvers like 8" and 10". Red dots killed that format pretty much, but I prefer long barrels to red dots.

Not all mountain guns are stainless. Model 25 was blue. Model 25-5 is peak mountain gun in 45LC.

Smiths normally would have an internal lock which people hated. This one is without that feature.
