- When making a left turn from the center line lane to the center line lane: 1) Drive straight out into the intersection until your head is at whatever divides the two ways of traffic here it's a double yellow line then 2) Steer your truck to the 2nd lane (curb lane on this road) until the tractor drive wheels are even with the stop line on the other side of the road (oncoming traffic side) then 3) Turn your tractor back to the left lane- finishing lane (closest to the centerline) while watching (tracking) your trailer so as not to drag it over the yellow lines or center curb then 4)When truck and trailer are straight in your lane the turn is complete- now signal and make your way to the curb lane one lane at a time when all clear. All 3 reference points for the left turn are on your left so you will always be able to monitor where your trailer is tracking. We as a truck drivers always travel in the far right lane (slow lane) so this is where we always finish up.
That's the best information I have heard since I been searching on RUclips and I'm in driving school, they couldn't break it down that easy, you have been very helpful and informative
thank-you

Could’ve said it better myself. I drive but even when I was going through the school, I never could find videos as informational & straight to the point as his videos.
I'm currently training for my cdl and my biggest concern was jumping the curb on the turns, I'm gonna give it a few tries with the methods I learned going through your videos and see if I learned quickly lol thanks for the videos man, very helpful
When your just starting out use your mirrors, go nice and easy and if your gonna hit something stop. It's better to block the highway off for a bit than tear something down. Eventually after a few years and after making what seems like a million different turns it will become so natural you won't even have to think about it.
And it's gonna happen eventually, every driver has curbed the wheels at some point or another but just try and not make a habit of it lol.
This is the kind of tutorial I need. The instructor I’m stuck with just sits there and is like “watch your tandems” I also didn’t know about the door lining up, I was just told after the drive wheels cross the middle.
Also if it’s a dual left turn into 2 lanes is it normal for the tandems to off track into the inner lane? Happens every time for me
I use ur methods for all my left & right turns bc my trainer won't telling me much! So Thanks!
How long have you been driving ??
+Reginald Teague I only ben driving about 3mths
+Davita Allen That's Kool I'm training thru my job right now can't Waite to finally be out there by myself..I'm thinking next I'll be running my first load by myself I'm lucky it's a local driving job but eventually I wanna go OTR...I don't know why it just amazes me to see women driving those big rigs around and it just brings a smile to my face...
+Reginald Teague LOL Congrats to you! I wish you da best...I'm otr by choice, can do local but have no reason to b home right now. I'm jus out, getn dis experience & money! Its definitely a tough job, but sumbody gotta do it (men/women). I prob go local in about a yr. I'm jus continuing to check out dis guys videos. His tips really helped me out otr😉
+Davita Allen hey I'm a new driver going with knight have orientation on the 30th :)
Absolutely the correct way for a left turn. Oh, by the way, some states require the turn be made this way. GREAT job!
This less than 1 min video is more helpful than most of the driving schools out there
thnx
I am glad i found your channel ! After taking a break ( 12 years ) from trucking and just coming back to it this past week I found out just how rusty i am with my turns. Thank you very much for your time.
In California they want us to end the left turn in the far right lane.. unless there are 3 lanes . But you ended in the left lane.? I am confused
Whichever lane you start your turn from- is the same lane you finish your turn onto - no matter- as you need to maintain lane control.
Mr John what state are you in?
I got points knocked off for turning into the left lane on a multi lane from a single lane here in California .
Diesel Burner I’m taking skill test tomorrow. When turning left, to a two lane street, you’re supposed to land on right lane? I’m in California
Do you know when to start turning if you’re driving a 26ft box truck?
Indeed....a 26 foot straight truck is like a bob tailing condo tractor...or what is known as a 'large car'....so drive as you would a longer car watching in your convex and west coast mirrors that you don't drive over anything...a straight truck is much easier than a 25' tractor and 53' trailer...
I need help steering on the highway. Everyone always says the same thing "oh you'll be alright" or "it comes with time and experience" but I just don't think I'm ever going to get it. It frustrates me so much that it makes me want to quit driving and I LOVE driving. This is the only job I feel comfortable doing, I'm on my own, don't have to worry about or work with anyone. It's just a rewarding job all around. But I get frustrated not really knowing how to steer, keep the tractor and trailer centered on the highway, not knowing how to steer into or out of curves on the highway....just all around feel sloppy with civilians and other truckers wanting to stay clear of me 🤦♂️😩 I'm trying my hardest and have accomplished and overcome alot but still I hate looking like I can't drive
Absolutely perfect step by step instructions, thank you
yur welcome- thnx
Thanks for the tip! Im eager to try it monday when i go driving at school. If im on my road test in ny and make this turn but cant get right back to the right lane im guessing id be impeding traffic and thus an auto fail? Thanks again.
Turns, backing up, angle parking, you name it I can do fairly easily but then get on the highway and look like a complete idiot 😩
Some jurisdictions do not allow trucks in the left lane. With that said, if you already have the right lane occupied, why give it up just to try another lane change?
Right turn. 😂😂😂😂😂
best advice,
Thank you so much :)
You're so welcome!
I honestly just learned and comprehended more from this less than a minute video, than my trainer has shown me in the last week of learning turns and off tracking. He never said use your driver door as a point of reference. Makes sense. Will try this week.
i think they dont tell you all because they want you to fail at least once, its more earnings for them... i think that's the case, because when i failed once than trainer told me alots of stuff.. but i paid him and the school much more money.. it makes sense.
or perhaps the trainer was not trained...a teacher is taught how to teach.

Thanks for the post, Sir. I wish you could post more video like this or something good for a new class A driver.
i've got a few here
Dam ur good at driving trucks i wish i could be able to drive them too
I had just started with the driving yesterday and my instructor was comfortable enough for me to start turning. even though I do not feel comfortable with it at all. the shifting and downshifting is easy.
I had a little bit of a challenge with the shifting and downshifting at first because it's very different compared to a car and a motorcycle but eventually like third week of training it became second nature
Any new situation tends to be uncomfortable- just have to push through
Thanks great video it was helpful appreciate it
yur welcome
Why didn't you just stay wide in the right lane? Why'd you use the left lane then go back right? Seems like the trailer woulda cleared had you stayed in the right.
D.O.T likes you to display your ability for trailer control and lane control- your way would surely be easier but no skill is needed to turn far and wide and you will not always be able - it's not always about the easiest way but the way that will enable you to do ANY turn- ANY place, be safe.
I did that on a road test at a company and the tester had issue with it. At the time I had had over 20 years of experience in 3 different countries trucking and the way he said I should have done I disagree with. If you know you need to be in that lane set yourself up to be in that lane NOT get in the right lane and then into the left when the left is already open.
I would agree if driving a car but we are driving a tandem vehicle- a truck and trailer and as such we are 'driving for the trailer' which means we must prevent the trailer from going over sidewalks or hoods of cars- depending on if you are making a right or left turn so the tractor must go wider than the turn.
Very helpful information
Really helpful thanks
I love your videos, but aren't you supposed to try to stay to the right after the turn?
Hi- and thanks- Once the turn is completed then you will maneuver your semi to the 'slow lane' or curb lane -where we always travel in a big truck.
Good job young man
So,you have to drive onto the shoulder lane to get back onto the inside lane
so as not to drag your trailer over the centerline or curb- yes
I always was taught right turn right lane
that is correct
Nice video ✌🏻
Thanks ❤️
yur welcome
thanx all your videos are very helpful
thnx
I failed that on my evaluation. I have to pass this time or go home thanks.....
