So the beginning and end of the middle ages depends on the type of history being considered and the geographical area, not only continents but countries and regions.

My personal definition of the Middle Ages is 622 AD (traditional date for the founding of Islam) to 1492 AD (Columbus's voyage and the beginning of large-scale trans-atlantic voyages).
The Founding of Islam was chosen as the beginning of the Middle Ages because the Rashidun and Ummayad Caliphates overran two of the three major powers of late Antiquity- the Eastern Roman and Sassanid Empires (China was not overrun and came under the control of the Tang Dynasty at this time)- and established the trinity of Christian West (Europe), Muslim Center (Middle-East, Africa, and eventually Central and South Asia), and Buddhist East (East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Mongol Empire).
The beginning of the Age of Exploration was chosen as the end of the Middle Ages because it resulted in the balance of power shifting away from the Mediterranean and the Middle East towards western Europe, and marked the shift from Feudalism to Colonialism.

I might define it as the period in which Catholicism was culturally dominant in Europe. Post-Roman, pre-Luther.
EDIT: Oh, you did mention this as an option. Cool!

The CONSTANT use to f the word “right”? and the phrase “you know?” make me wonder if these people ever graduated from high school!!!!!! Definitely puts their research in question.
