This week on The Medieval Podcast, Danièle speaks with Anthony Bale about the ins and outs of medieval travel, and some of the wild stories of journeys gone wrong.
Anthony Bale is Professor of Medieval Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, where he researches relations between Christians and Jews in medieval England as well as the culture of medieval pilgrimage. His new book is A Travel Guide to the Middle Ages: The World Through Medieval Eyes.

When I was 18, I left my home in the US and traveled through Bolivia with my uncle, who had grown up there. And I still remember him saying things like "if our bus comes" or "if the pass isn't blocked because of a local dispute." In at least one case, our bus didn't come, and we had to haggle for seats on the next bus that came through. Twelve hours later.
