Wow. Dr. Cline was my professor for Greek History 18 years ago at George Washington University. It was one of the hardest classes I ever took. Dr. Cline offered me no quarter; either I learned a ton of history or I failed. I studied my ass off, got an A on the final, and earned the most difficult 'C' I'd ever receive. It is great watching him now and knowing that I was learning from one of the preeminent experts on this time period in the academic world.

Just having an amateur interest in history and retired railway conductor I found this info very relevant to our human activity today. I think the video shown at the beginning was probably the same in 1200 BC. Just different technology. Your use of modern analogy, including jokes, and common language made this lecture a pleasure. Thank you.
I was employed on the Santa Fe Railway formed by a man in 1869 , Cyrus K. Holiday, who had a vision of trade with Asia. That vision is still a main stay of what we now call intermodal freight traffic or trade. The Santa Fe completed it’s transcontinental link from Chicago to LA and California ports by 1888. Now the BNSF Ry calls the Santa Fe mainline the southern “Transcon”. However, a large portion of the freight is now carried in containers adapted to be loaded onto large container ships on both east & west coast of the U.S. Some of the freight is trans-global, in that containers are off loaded on one coast onto trains. Then transported across the US and reloaded onto container ships too large to navigate the Panama Canal. Then transported to either Europe, Africa and Asia and visa-versa. It forced the railway systems to modernize and the Santa Fe had that vision to have the infrastructure to adapt to the change and increase in freight traffic. They were a bit slow to pick up the ball, but were way ahead of other railway companies in moving priority freight trains on their passenger mainlines much more efficiently. BNSF take over just boosted the investment needed to speed the mainline up even more on the Santa Fe route.
So how much evidence has archeology uncovered to show an evolution of methods of transporting raw material and high value trade items? The tin from Afghanistan would have been a tough trip with heavy loads to meet the demand to make bronze. Camels? Carts? Elephants? Were trade routes trampled down hard and leaving a permanent impression in the earth, then paved over by Roman road system? We can only guess, 🤔 I guess?

    • @railscenes4959
      @railscenes4959 Год назад +4

@@brianfreel1473 well sadly it depends on your definition of an alien. Unfortunately there were a few Hispanic freight riders who literally “fell thru the cracks”.
One incident involved an apparent Hispanic male riding the empty part of the cars that carried the shipping containers. I’d guess he got so tired he fell thru the space between to cross bracing in the floor to the track while the train was traveling 60-70 MPH. I wasn’t a member of the crew and it was hard to determine the cause after the fact as there was no way to know to determine the facts. I never heard any result of the BNSF investigation.
      Thanks for asking.

Meh. So much of the western historical narrative leaves for more questions than answers, and very dubious at best. For example, up until the mid 1800s, you have many references to the Tartarian empire, including existence on maps of that era, and then it is largely erased from the modern narrative. The Tartarian maps include domain over large parts of what is now Russia and also North America. The language spoken is often said to be an early form of Magyar (currently known now as Hungarian) language. You find in the Americas, evidence of Magyar language spoken by many so-called "first nation" people, who also say, "we aren't the first". What else, also early Spanish maps predating 1850s show the Aztecs had a range from what is today, Salt Lake City to Mexico City. If you look at maps of early American languages spoken, that's exactly what you find. Yet the modern, institutionally supported narrative doesn't follow the facts, but spit out constant spun-up conjecture. Then you have megalithic sites with technology that doesn't match the current narrative, including anthropological findings that support "native mythology" but not "Western" chronological narratives. The explanation? Also, shy is the Smithsonian more secretive than the NSA?

Regarding the discussion on iron versus bronze..as a sculptor who pours both bronze and iron regularly I can say that the difference back then was surely the melting temperature..1850F for bronze and 2650F for iron..in ancient times there was no way to cast iron and get to that temp..it was smelted into what was called a bloom and heated red hot and pounded into useful shapes..but not melted..that would take centuries to engineer..also brass was rare because the boiling point of zinc is so close to its melting point that
zinc was rarely isolated to create brass..also i really enjoyed this video..cheers...

Historians come in all breeds some are magical clerks who can take all works of a time and spin them into something cohesive and congruent, some are detectives who can infer so much out of so little and still be accurate, others are bards/artists who can take the mundane and bring them to life in a way no one else can. With ancient (might as well be Pre-) history you find the detectives en masse, but to actually bring life to a time so empty of literature takes talent of all three, and bravo to you sir.

The Tojan war is a fascinating thing because of the cleverness of Homer's epic. This man sung a lie so big, so enthralling that here it is thousands of years later and we have not forgotten the truth. We don't know exactly where the war was fought, that's unimportant, we remember the important aspects. Men of Greece waged a war that lasted for many years and it was so terrible that even when it was over it was not over for the soldiers. They were so scarred by the war that they became lost, unable to truly return home for many years if at all. Thousands of years ago, Homer sung about PTSD... and mocked the very reason why the men paid such a terrible price.

I don´t understand the excitement over old civs trading with eachother. The notion that old kingdoms wouldn´t trade and visit each-other, over vast distances, is just modern hubris. Thinking that we are the peak of societies, and that the people back then didn´t think about exactly what we think today, because they were "backwards". They had the same intellects(if not greater), visions, goals, curiosity etc. People, in small sailboats, travel all over the world today, why wouldn´t mighty empires with HUGE sailboat, vast fortunes and extreme experience do the same? The Egyptians, the greeks, the Israelites, the Romans, the Chinese etc. All of them traveled to all continents of the world. Just because you´re not shown "evidence", in form of stone tablets/carvings/books etc, does not make it so. I hiked for hundreds of miles last year, with my feets(!), and there is no records of it! I´ve read of people walking for thousands of miles to escape from the Gulags in deep Russia, and survived to talk about it!
If they could build pyramids, colosseums, hanging gardens, vast cities etc, then they could sail the oceans and explore. And don´t give my anything about "them being afraid of falling of the edge of the world, so they didn´t go", knowing mankind, that would only trigger us more to defy the warnings and go there...

And, of the 100 or so people I'm family or close friends with (5-80 years old), only 2 have had it and neither of them even really felt sick. But to hear the media talk (incessantly! - OHHH, Be AfRaIiIiId!!) we should all be dead by now. Knowing what I know now; that those who die from it have an average of 6 (SIX!!!) co-morbidities - meaning God only knows what ACTUALLY killed them; that masks don't actually work; that lockdowns don't actually work; and that the numbers the govt has been putting out there this whole damn time have been total BS (PCR cycle threshold), I'm glad I didn't stay "locked down" for longer than I did. Fascinating lecture, thanks to Eric Cline for putting it together and the Long Now Foundation for hosting it. I especially found the earthquake sequence to be interesting as I had not heard of this before in the context of the late bronze age collapse. Not sure yet if it's in his book but I had the thought that earthquakes would have wrought havoc on the un-reinforced masonry and mud-brick walls that the cites of these civilizations depended on for protection. This would have helped the sea peoples (or any other invaders in that period) to undermine, batter down or otherwise assault those settlements. I bet someone could write a paper just on that, and I would love to read it.

@ A bias religious scholar. You and him are trying to pretend that Palestine was not a nation and that it was not inhabited for thousands of years before the state of Israel was established in 1948.
Without any evidence, besides biblical history, you claim that Israelites occupied the area before 1276 BCE. However, for the period of time while it was called Canaan, the Canaanites were not Israelites. The region of Canaan did not include Israel. Back then it was Palestine.
If you want to try to pretend that they didn't exist. That's like claiming South America is Spanish. Interestingly in history the genetic haplotype actually migrated from Europe at some point in time eventually developing their own cultures in South America. These included the Olmec, Aztec, Inca, Maya, and Norte Chico people.
Thousands of years passed and then Europeans came to invade the land despite no actual direct relations to the local people. They could claim that it was always a Spanish colony made of Europeans and just disregard all the things that happened in between.
This is what you are saying here. Cultures and people who existed in a place for thousands of years are not real. You claim that because at some distant point in history your ancestors may have occupied the same land it has always been yours and the people who lived there in between have no right to it.
Seems more than a little selfish.

@Dr Evil Heey Dr. E, you should heed your own advise. "Go out, get drunk, get laid, get a good nights rest... You will have a different perspective on it.". Clearly such reasoning goes both ways, doesn't it?
You really must hate your own life, because the first thing you say to people is "get a life, moron"... Well, why don't you do exactly that yourself, Dr. E? All you're doing right now is lashing out to someone on the internet, hoping that they strike back and confirm to you that the world is a bad place. Pretty sure it will get worse and worse if you continue on this road, Mr. So do yourself a favor and read this comment over and over again like a rhyme, like a mantra, until you get it that you don't need to respond to me to feel better, you need to address your own issues.
It's a self-defeating argument to denote someone else's reasoning as just an opinion, and subsequently not address the issue that your own comment thereby also is reduced to opinion. It's a little narcissist. See, "Remember, your opinions are just that, opinions..."... This makes me think you lack true self-worth, because you don't say "people's opinion" in defense of everyone, no you say "your opinion" attacking me as some sort of pre-emptive defense of only yourself. At least I trolled a troll to feel better, you just puke on everyone, don't you, including yourself?
Finally, you say "Get a life moron, you probably have a collection of cats don't you?" and then follow up with "How in the hell did cats enter into the observation/conversation...?".... How do you even muster up the courage to speak of my attention span, whilst your own is just about futile? If you say stuff like that, it's not really an opinion that you suck as a troll, it's a fact. There is logic and evidence supporting that, not vague remarks of vogue and fashion. If you knew anything about fashion at all, you would have known most evil geniuses have white cats for purposes of being evil in style. I see pop culture references only make it as far as your profile name and picture...
Help yourself, Dr. E. really.. Otherwise things will never brighten up for you anymore.. Turn that troll into stone with some nice sun...
Maybe some day you will realize that you should really thank me for taking the time to explain this to you. I will thank you in the meantime, because I now have a solid piece of advise to apply to myself. You see, I do apply my own reasoning to my own position, contrary to some people. Thanks for being my beast of burden. Troll of trolls out.

The speaker makes a really good point about "a sharp edge is a sharp edge." Don't forget we are talking iron here, not steel. Not to say that carbon didn't get into the iron at all, but people hadn't quite figured out steel yet. So while iron is harder than bronze, it's not like steel.
Like bronze, iron is given to bending as well as requiring frequent sharpening (though less frequently w iron).

Outstanding presentation and discussion. Nice to see academics keeping an open mind and acknowledging when we don't know what we don't know. And a great take on the practicalities of iron vs. bronze. "How sharp is an iron vs. a bronze dagger?" "Does it matter when it goes into you?" Iron is better, obviously, but it's much harder to produce (higher temperatures, alloys, etc.), and so you wouldn't necessarily want to use it if bronze gives you the 90% solution. But if tin becomes impossible to find...

I believe and have heard elsewhere that late Bronze Age bronze was actually superior or a bit harder than early Iron Age iron. Also you don’t change the base metal of society over night and change doesn’t happen everywhere at once. It would filter around the known world over time. Just think that iron was mined or picked up at one place and processed nearby. That area would be using that iron in everyday life first probably because it’s what they have and it doesn’t require import. This would make it cheaper. Then you wouldn’t export this stuff till you have enough of an excess. Then this gets exported. Small excesses get exported to close places since the freight charges and difficulties would be covered by small export quantities. Once the close market is satisfied then you e port further and further. This has iron filtering across the lands as excess production brings down the price. Then low prices means further transport becomes easier and cheaper. Remember your competing with bronze which has a single source for tin a long way away and freight must have been prohibitive.
I thought king tuts dagger was meteoric iron? Testing and all.

Hittite might seem to be less important than Egipt, but in fact, it was a symbiotic coexistence. When the capital of the Anahuac felt, it dragged the rest of the civilizations with it. Most of them had a Rennaissance, but it was built around mysticism and not by science. Antique people used science as it meant to be but after the colapse, mysticism was the rule.

@@0649Hayes Comments like that are part of the reason why no one likes you. This video has nothing to do with the bad orange man, but you are so obsessed with him that you just had to mention him, anyway. That’s unbelievably pathetic. I just thank God that the TDS you’re infected with isn’t contagious, because I’d rather have Covid and AIDS at the same time, than to have to deal with an illness as embarrassing as that.
I feel so bad for your family. Your crazy obsession with the man who used to be president has to be seriously humiliating to them. They aren’t the ones who were so ignorant and gullible that they allowed themselves to become brainwashed, yet now, thanks to your sick obsession, people can’t help but look at them differently, too, I’m sure. It’s not fair to them, at all, but you can’t really blame people for wondering if genetics are to blame for you being so simple-minded. It’s a shame, too, because I’m sure some of them are probably decent people, who actually have some common sense, and the ability to think for themselves.
I really hope they find a cure, soon, for the sake of all your loved ones, and everyone else that’s suffering from the humiliation of having a relative with TDS, as well. They didn’t do anything stupid, and they don’t deserve this. You deserve every bit of the ridicule, though, because you were the fool who trusted the propaganda, and you were the one who didn’t have enough sense to consider that there might be another side to all the stories you heard.
They told you the bad orange man colluded with Russia, and you just knew it was true. You saw his mean tweets, and you heard that private conversation he had, when he joked around with another man on a bus, and you were appalled. You heard about how he was a racist, and about how he had slept with a lot of beautiful women when he was younger, and you were disgusted. When he won the presidency you were heartbroken for your country, wondering how such an awful man could have been elected, when, instead, we could have had a president with good morals, and picture-perfect family values, like Bill Clinton’s wife.
You figured it was probably all because of sexism, but then, you heard that it was possibly the work of Vladimir Putin, who was secretly best buds with the bad orange man, and, suddenly, it all made perfect sense to you. You knew that Russians weren’t supposed to vote in our elections, and you were furious that it had happened that way, so you did what any good, patriotic American would do, if they heard something that ridiculous, and there wasn’t any evidence to support it, and you made it clear to everyone you talked to, right away, that the president-elect was “not your president,” and you were right.
Then, you continued saying that, even after you weren’t right anymore, and you said it for the next 4 years. Long after he had become your president, you still made it a point to stand up for what’s right, and say “not my president,” even though he obviously was. You knew that if the election had been fair, and the Russians hadn’t been allowed to vote in it, he could’ve never defeated a real leader, like Bill’s old lady, in more than 30 states like he did.
You considered leaving the country, because you couldn’t stand the idea of a person of orange color making America great again, but then, you remembered that there wasn’t any better countries to go to, so you made the brave decision to stay, and try your very best to make it through the next 4 years of hell, doing anything you could to survive the nightmare of America becoming great again. You courageously told yourself that you’d give the deep state one more chance to hold a fair election, and if the outcome of that one wasn’t fair enough, you’d have no choice but to threaten to leave the country again, before eventually deciding to stay.
Fortunately, you didn’t have to worry about doing anything drastic like that, though, because this time, the good, totally unbiased men and women, and other genders in the deep state, made sure that there was no funny business allowed, and we had a totally fair election. It was so fair this time, in fact, that literally everyone agreed that it was fair, except for one candidate, all the people who supported him, and some other folks who didn’t necessarily support him, but still wanted a fair election, anyway.
All the Democrat politicians made it very clear, that it was the very mostest fairestest election that there has ever been, ever ever ever, in the whole entire history of fair elections, and all the honest, totally unbiased political activists/news reporters, who actively support all those same Democrat politicians, along with the same Democrat candidate they all supported, but clearly had no dog in the fair election fight, confirmed that what all the Democrat politicians they support said was true. Finally, the bad orange man, who “wasn’t your president,” would actually not be your president anymore, and we would soon have a leader who won fair and square, and who wasn’t a dumb old racist pervert, like the last guy, who was also bad and orange.
Thank the Big Bang, or the great transgender illegal alien Buddha, or whatever it is that people like you worship, we now have a president who is incredibly sharp, energetic, always knows what he’s doing, and where he’s at, has never once said or done anything racist, and has absolutely never fondled tons of women and children inappropriately, either behind closed doors, or right in plain sight, on video, repeatedly, for the whole world to see.
It sure is a good thing those crazy Trump supporters didn’t get their way again, isn’t it? Oh, I almost forgot to even mention, the new guy knows Barrack Obama, the first half-black president, personally, and he even claims to be his friend. It definitely doesn’t get any cooler than that! We are all certainly in good hands now, but especially any little girls that get to meet the president. He really loves it when they sit in his lap and rub his hairy legs, as he’s whispering softly into their ear, and sniffing their hair.
It’s wonderful having an intelligent man who is so good with kids in office, isn’t it? He actually seems as excited to meet them, as they are uncomfortable to have him rub and sniff them. It’s so funny how he always pretends to flirt with the cute little girls, and he tells them silly things, like how he wants to date them. It’s really sweet to see how he just automatically starts grooming any kid he’s around, and does his best to make them feel safe. It seems like it comes totally naturally for him, and you can definitely tell it’s genuine. I’m sure any parent would be thrilled to have a man just like him to babysit their kids. I’m telling you, this elderly, creepy, incompetent joke of a president we have now is just a really, truly great guy, any way you look at it. There’s absolutely no doubt that everyone knows this by now, but if you didn’t vote for Brandon, you ain’t stupid! I mean come on man! This ain’t a joke. Corn Pop was a bad dude. He was an African-American, and he respected me. I’m not joking. This is a big f*cking deal. Come on man!!

Archeology has been of interest to me for many years, but understanding "why" times change based on both human behavior and natural events really helps one to visualize the chain of events that played the most significant parts in how and why societies change or undergo changes over which they actually have little control.

The Egyptians protected their newly learned science of turning iron into steel sometime between 700 to 660 BC, teaching this to only a select few tradesmen. They probably learned how to pound in graphite powder into strips of white hot iron from the Chinese, using charcoal for heat, billows to get the fire hot enough to melt a mixture of iron ore and meteorite chips in clay pots which would withstand the high temperatures, then poured this molten iron into short strips in clay molds for further forging, hammering and folding to blend in the graphite powder. They understood the necessity of working in enough graphite to make the steel tolerate repeated bending, otherwise it would fracture like a dropped cast iron skillet today. They forged short strips of steel and fastened them with sheep gut to the outer ends of the bows for the chariot archers, thus making their bows one third the length of the traditional long bows, so they could be managed in a chariot. Steel, although difficult to produce, could be repeatedly bent without fracturing (as iron would) and for other purposes it could be sharpened as sharp as glass (which was readily available but too brittle for most uses). A sharp edge on a metal blade was also a new concept for them. Copper and bronze don't hold a sharp edge well.

Perhaps the Trojan War in mythology was actually a war against the Trojans who were a sea people. Maybe they even raided Sparta carrying off women, perhaps including the king's wife, and this was a reprisal or a gathering of the Greeks to go after them once and for all and try to make the raids or incursions stop. A lot of mythology often has a non-magical basis in reality.

I'm wondering if deforestation in the Mediterranean over hundreds of years (or more) prior to the collapse played a big part in the change of local climate; lots of trees had been cut down after bronze axes were developed. That likely would have affected rainfall in that area, plus the domestication of sheep and goats that maintain no regeneration of forests. Early on the areas were covered with forests and shipbuilding was a major enterprise. The cedars of Lebanon, Greece and Cyprus were legendary in early bronze age, but have never re-grown. A lot of the area is remains barren.

I heard that any decent professor uses their students and grad students as extensions, as researchers. Which is pretty normal, so if a teacher is looking for info, just assign it to 100 students and have a grad student collate it all while you work on your book. After 20-30 years, with 1000's of students and hundreds of passionate, focused grad students constantly researching your area of study, while you flip through the papers and grade them, saving what you want for your book! It must be a tremendous time saver. It's no wonder why these guys in academia can find the answers and have time to write! I used to think it must be hard to find time to write a book when you have a full-time job like that and yet, every Professor has hundreds if not thousands of co-writers, none of whom get paid a cent!
Not only that, given archaeology, it's extremely difficult, and usually takes decades for anybody to prove you wrong! By than, 30 years went by, books were written, the university gave out a fat severance, and than, years later..........
"Oh crap, I guess I was wrong"
I used to think guys like this we all geniuses and just way beyond regular people.

1177 B.C.: When Civilization Collapsed | Eric Cline 1155am 17.5.23 so 1900's onwards... up until present day and probably beyond.... will be seen as our contemporary dark age? i am begging to differ. as it seems these events - total repetition where an historical narrative is concerned - are worked into our economic and every day existences. these events after all prop up capital(ism) - break down to build up/destroy to invest etc etc etc... pretty easy template to get a grip on. "it is the job of others" to desist from this incessant bs, then...? as for it being naive idealism to question the nature of the rise and fall of civilisations - i don't see why it should be deemed idealism (nor why such pooh poohing of this pessimism is frowned upon) nor why it is deemed so outre to want out of these dire prognostications...... due to the fact that it is this incessant b.s which prompts us to look elsewhere to get us out of a tiresome and moribund fix, i would say it is healthy to demand different answers.... nowhere in my responses have i demanded communism be implemented as the antidote to the ills of this farce - these dark ages we are being confronted with. who in their right mind, after concluding that the farce we constantly strive to overcome is being propped up by martial spirited prowess of our alleged betters, would then demand a fighting force to implement an idealism fit for nought but being spat upon - if conventional wisdom is to be deemed the backbone of the status quo?............................. confronting a discourse which is nought but a dead-end does not mean you have the right to drown others who hove into view (hypothetically speaking)...
