According to carnivalglassworldwide a newspaper article of 1897 stated - when viewed by any light free from UV light, uranium glass is colourless … but viewed by daylight or the electric arc light (rich in UV) the magnificent green fluorescence is seen. The electric Arc Lamp was the very first kind of commercially successful electric light. They emitted a super-bright purplish-white light, which was in fact UV light.
When Vaseline glass was viewed under an arc lamp, emitting UV light, it would have glowed crazy bright green - it must have looked like magic! Back in the 1800s and into the early years of the 1900s, they actually had their own version of black lights that made Vaseline glass glow.

Honestly, I think that puzzling through things and then seeking to find out about the parts you don’t understand isn’t Atrocious Science. Posing questions about the unknown is the core of scientific inquiry.
      Or something like that.
I’m a nerdy artist, with a curiosity about absolutely everything, and not anything like a scientist.

The orange glow comes from cadmium. Cadmium glass glows yellow, pink, orange, or red under UV light. You can see this sometimes in old glass candy dishes from the early days. Depression glass you will find both uranium and cadmium. You can find it in old brooches as well. Love your channels.

According to Wikipedia, uranium glass dates back to 79 AD. It was found in a mosaic in Italy. Then in the middle ages it was used as a glass colourant in Bohemia. It fell out of use as a colourant somewhere around the 1940's. Hope that's helpful 😊

Uranium glass started being used a lot in the 1830's but it's popularity was not because it glowed (because that wasn't known until the invention of the black light.) It was the color that was the attraction-the "canary yellow" which later was sometimes called Vaseline was a favorite.

This night video was very interesting, I was thinking how many people do this sort of thing. Years ago when my husband and I lived in Southwest Florida we went at night. I wanted him to see the shooting stars over the water while sitting on the beach. He was absolutely amazed because it was the first time he ever saw shooting stars. They looked like they were falling into the ocean. Just beautiful, I believe everyone should enjoy watching the stars falling. It has to be very dark to appreciate them.

You two are so precious to me!! Because of you, I get to go on an awesome adventure every week!
I live in South Africa and you have no idea how lucky you are! We don't have any beaches or rivers with any treasures at all; we have shells and way too much plastic waste. There are old dump sites in towns, but most are underneath buildings or inaccessible now.
I share your enthusiasm because I love vintage and antique items. I have some uranium glass items from my great-granny (a marble, a necklace, a vase, beads crocheted into doilies, two drops that were earrings) and found some in the few antique shops that I get to visit in other towns on the few holidays I have.
I am happy just finding one shard of old pottery or bottle which I consider treasure and you walk over masses of broken shards without noticing them. I find them only on old farm or building's buried dump sites that somehow made it to the surface.
I also love the beautiful nature scenes you record. I appreciate our country's natural beauty, but I have a soft spot for all British plants because of books. Thank you so much!

I had one strange toy when I was a child. It was shaped like a very small light bulb. If I put it in the window in the sun, it would soak in light that made it glow in the dark. However, it did not glow all night. A house that we rented in Memphis, Tennessee, had star shaped items stuck to the ceiling (in one of the bedrooms), that soaked up light while the ceiling light was on. When the light was turned off, the stars would show up in a green/yellow light for a while.

Fascinating question about the black light. It reminds me of Calvin's dad explaining to Calvin why old ohotos are black and white - worth a quick google!
Anyway a simple glass prism could be used to separate out UV light from sunlight. If you combined that with a "gate" to only let the UV through, you could effectively create a UV isolating filter. That technology is plenty old enough, so I wonder if a variation of it could have been used?

I think I found the answer to your uranium glass before UV lights question.
The clue is in your comment that the petal continued to glow for a moment after you removed the light.
“… uranium will continue to glow in the dark for some time after first being charged in sunlight.”
So, at a party or the theater, after wearing the beak lace outside, presumably it would glow when the lights were turned off. And before electricity (or in places without it), presumably they would glow when going from outside to an unlit or poorly lit indoor location.
Give it a test and let us know how it turns out! 😁 I’m very curious now, but don’t live in a place where I’d ever find something like that.

The UV torching videos are my favorites. One I love the glow but mainly because so many neigar ( probably didn’t spell that right lol) beads are found. Northern Mudlarks has UV torched at night and found a lot of him and his brothers beads also. I love it all thank you, thank you, thank you. ❤

When you shine normal light on uv beads then turn the light off, the beads glow faintly for a few seconds. This is how people knew they glowed before black light lamps.
This is why radium was used in wrist watch faces as well. Although the radioacticity was higher in those so they glowed for hours instead of a few seconds.
As a side note, your blacklight lamps have a lot of white light in the beam which allows you to see the beam, while the very expensive lamps are true blacklights as they show the glowing object without lighting anything else.

lots of frantic typing going on there! I think Kate is right, and it was originally its popularity as a colourant for glass, rather than the fact that it glowed under UV light... unless, in Africa, the beads absorbed enough UV light during daytime that they glowed briefly when entering a dark space (perhaps a windowless hut?) to make them realize they had special properties? Interesting... At any rate, hunting UV beads at night now seems an amazing thing to do (jealous!!!). I enjoyed the video, thank you! And I hope the "find of a lifetime" turns out to be something incredible! kindest regards to you all, k

Good Day, Ladies! The metal piece found at timestamp 1:10 resembles a crude version of the thingamajig they used to lace up boots during the Victorian era. : ) What a cool selection of uranium beads! As you know, many rocks fluoresce, as well as seashells. During the Victorian era, even until now, they have used seashells and copper wire to make decorative bonsai trees and flower bouquets. Your radiant petal may have been a seashell sculpted for that purpose. If my memory serves me correctly, it seems that I've seen rocks and seashells glow under certain moonlight?
