The rings only adjust inner/static convergence (the middle area of the display) One set of rings (the middle set) adjusts both the horizontal and vertical component of red and blue. You adjust vertical convergence by moving both rings together, you adjust horizontal convergence by moving the rings independently, such that the tabs are closer or further apart. ( this can be tricky because there is also a rotational component involved due to the nature of the magnetic fields of the different ring sets interacting with each other as you move them ) The other set of rings (furthest back towards the neckboard) should not change the convergence of red and blue, but rather move both red and blue together/simultaneously, in order to line them up with green. If your rings do not behave in this manner (say your middle set controls vertical, and the rear set controls horizontal) the most likely cause is because the ring sets are not properly oriented with respect to each other. They need to be around 90 degrees out of phase in order for the magnetic fields of each ring set to do their intended function. Having them greater or less will cause the magnetic fields of each ring set to interact more than they should, which is what causes interactions like changing the rear rings affecting the function of the middle rings. Typically the way to avoid this is set one set of the rings to 10 o'clock (the rear set), and the other set to about 2 o'clock (the middle set), and then try to maintain that ~90 degree relationship between the sets, to keep their magnetic fields from interacting with each others function. The typical method for doing convergence is to turn off green, use the middle rings that converge red and blue until you get magenta/purple, then turn green back on and use the back set of rings in order to get the magenta/purple to line up with the green. With the static convergence done, its time do the dynamic convergence (the outer areas of the screen) This is the difficult bit, as it requires moving the yoke up/down and left/right. Tilting the yoke up and down controls the red/blue rotational convergence. Moving the yoke downwards rotates red counterclockwise while simultaneously rotating blue clockwise, moving upwards rotates red clockwise while simultaneously rotating blue counterclockwise. The goal is to get them to meet in the middle. Tilting the yoke left and right controls the size convergence. Moving the yoke left makes blue shrink while making red stretch, moving the yoke right makes red shrink while making blue stretch. The goal is, again, to get them to meet in the middle. What makes it difficult is getting both the rotational convergence and the size convergence to line up at the same time, because nearly all movements have both an x and y component, which means even small movements in one direction with have slight movements in the other axis, causing one to influence the other. After you do get this (without practice, prepare to spend a not-insignificant amount of time on this) you will probably still have a few areas that are imperfect. The remaining areas are the areas you tend to fix using convergence strips.
I recieved the nastiest shock of my entire life (genuinely surprised it didnt kill me) from an arcade CRT when I was 16. Im 28 now and I got my hands on an original donkey kong and it needs some serious work. I think with your help in your videos im finally ready to work on a CRT again.

How do you get the lines to all sink in place at the same time? Every time I align one side the other I’m side goes out of wack. One side would be all white and the other looks like a rainbow.

I know that crt works above 25kv and I opened back cover of the monitor many times for cleaning purposes and I also adjusted focus voltage and screen voltage also. Yes. Do NOT run it without one. Most machines have one built into the power brick but newer games (MK4 for example) that came with a K7400 or Neotec did not since those monitors don’t require one. If you are ever unsure, just ask.

i now have another issue🤣 i adjust the pots on my machine to stretch the screen slightly it works great and looks better. the problem is when i come back the next day and turn it on its all out of sync again and shaking all over the place and i have to readjust them again . have you any idea why this would be i cant work it out 👍

My monitor has no rings and i definitely have a convergence problem😕 I don't understand it - it's a proper arcade tube and i read on some forums that some tubes simply don't have the rings (i forgot what was the quoted reasoning)

Sure. Lots of places. Just don't touch anything that isn't plastic and you should be ok. Common sense will prevail most of the time.

Medical tape is a good substitute as far as texture and likeness. Can’t speak for the heat aspect over time though.

Likely dirty pots or they need to be adjusted just slightly a bit more.

If the yoke is bonded on, the convergence is built into the yoke with internal magnets. There’s no way to adjust it that I’m aware of.
