  • Does the Shakespearean adage “uneasy lies the head that wears a crown” still apply to today’s United Kingdom? British author and journalist Douglas Murray joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson, H.R. McMaster, and John Cochrane to discuss King Charles III’s coronation and the monarch’s relevancy in modern times, plus the fragile state of the West given unbalanced alliances, threats to free markets, and strained social fabrics. But before that: the three “Goodfellows” remember the recently deceased John Raisian, director of the Hoover Institution from 1990 to 2015.
    ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a weekly Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

I'm an 81-year-old lady who lives in the 'wilds' of western Canada, who found your show as it emerged on RUclips. I don't think I've missed an episode. My goal then was to widen my perspective on 'republican' views. In this search, I came across the Hoover Institution, and there you were. You've opened a window on the world that never fails to entertain, inform and delight. Thank you for providing this service with your collective wisdom and that of your guests. Please know that your efforts are appreciated in unexpected places.

I view the woke stuff as the natural reaction to historical racism, misogony and bigotry, BLM for example is trying to fix your American race problems, albeit very poorly, but then again the Republicans and Conservatives are acting racist, just look at America First. The more you fight the woke with racism, the more wokeness you get.

Being half-British (by my mother who was Welsh) she would tell me the importance of being an American, yet would teach me about heritage, history and tradition. She loved the monarchy even after she became a US citizen in 1974. Never understood until I got well into my forties. People would ask if she was "from England" and she would smile and say "Im British" . Never calling herself English but respectful enough to Americans who probably didnt know where Wales was :-)

I must say the Power Law chart Niall Ferguson showed us was shocking in that it did not, and judging by the caveats it could not, include Poland. Poland has given Ukraine the Soviet era tanks and aircrafts that the Ukrainian army is already trained to use. By doing so they kept the Ukrainian army in the fight. The same is true for other former Soviet European countries. You cannot easily measure such contributions financially, but it is a critical factor.
Even without those caveats the United States would doubtless still be the biggest contributor with the UK possibly in second place but Poland could take its rightful place at the top as well. Why use such caveats when they diminish rightful credit to an ally?
I am not Polish nor am I paid by Poland, its princes nor its politicians.

    • @bruy88
      @bruy88 Год назад +2

Yes, I found that chart strange too. Surely along with Poland, Germany and the Netherlands should be on it too. It looks like there are more bars than there are names of countries down the left side… I wonder why they would do that?

    • @edchristie1974
      @edchristie1974 Год назад +1

The chart is wrong of course. What it looks like is an extract from the Kiel Ukraine Support Tracker (which everybody uses). The 2nd bar would be the European Union but the name label is missing. That then explains why Germany and Poland are not shown separately. However, the presentation is inconsistent because small EU states such as Sweden and Denmark *are* shown. So, zero marks to Niall Ferguson for this chart which embeds several errors and inconsistencies.

Saying it is up to the Ukrainians is, I believe, a coded way of saying that the Ukrainians are what Teddy Roosevelt called “the man in the arena “ who has the direct power to take matters into his own hands. That’s what Zelenski did at the start: exercise that prerogative when he asked for ammunition. Now the men and women in the arena are fighting fully motivated and the Russians are dying. It is not too much to say that they hold history in their own hands and the West is kibitzing, but also sending lots of nice weaponry and training. If the Ukrainians can permanently cut the land bridge to Crimea, I think they can inflict a decisive defeat on Russia, even it takes some time to starve them out of the peninsula.

Let the oppressed Russian ethnic East brake away. The burning alive of Russian civilians at ODESSA destroyed Ukraine for many ethnic Russians. Freedom and Independence for the Dombas.

This is something I have encountered in many parts of the developed world (not just North America or Europe), is that many in the younger generation do not appreciate what is available to them. There is no society that is 100% fair but having opportunities available and simply living a comparatively better environment is something that the developed world offers and is lost on them.

For people on or close to the breadline an increase in social security makes a huge difference. After miserable years surviving on £90 a week my friend now gets double that - £180 per week as an old age pensioner - not a king's ransom but it has made a huge difference and it is unconditional - she no longer has to fight her way through a cruel and stupid in work benefits system just to be able to buy groceries. And she has always worked.
Rory Stewart has a charity called Just Giving because he has discovered that in places like Africa if you just give people money in their hand it actually does more good than all the aid agencies combined - the benefits to the family are instant and life changing. And most people ARE grateful. All they need is a little common sense help and support to get back on their feet really.
The massive grievance industry is the exclusive domain of a very privileged elite mainly in academia.
The poor do not turn their noses up at help. They are grateful.

This is not true across the board. A sense of entitlement afflicts us all in the rich West from the top to the bottom of society. Thankfully there are still people around who are not totally moved by self-centredness. I think we are facing moral collapse in the West. However the vacuum that results has been filled with new morals which will turn out to be more oppressive than the most extreme Victorian moralists.

In Sweden we had a law with some horrible outsiights to force gender ideology into all other fields of research. During the years universities and institutions are full of people working to make the world a better place while actually installing a communist regime. Later repealed but the idea is heavily pushed everywhere.
Ordinance (1997:61) on a secretariat for gender research
    SFS 2000:611
    Ministry/authority: Ministry of Education
    Issued: 1997-02-13
    Changed: up to SFS 2000:611
    Repealed: 2010-01-01
The constitution has been repealed by: SFS 2009:1574
    Change register: SFSR (Government Office)
    Source: Full text (Government Office)
    Introductory regulations
§ 1 At the University of Gothenburg there is a secretariat for gender research. The secretariat is such an establishment for special tasks as referred to in ch. 3. Section 8 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). Ordinance (1998:1013).
    Tasks
Section 2 The Secretariat shall, with a nationwide perspective, promote gender research in the broadest sense and work to ensure that the importance of a gender perspective is recognized in all research.
This must be done through investigative work, opinion formation and information dissemination as well as in the other ways that the secretariat deems appropriate. The secretariat's duties include, among other things, to
    - overview gender research in Sweden and actively promote the dissemination of its results,
    - analyze the need for gender research in all scientific fields, and
    - work for an increased awareness of the importance of gender research and the gender perspective.
    Organisation
§ 3 The secretariat is led by a board consisting of a chairman and six other members. All are appointed by the government. One of the members is appointed following a proposal by the University of Gothenburg.
Section 4 Under the board, the secretariat is led by a director appointed by the board.
    The board's duties
Section 5 The secretariat's board shall decide on matters relating to the planning of the secretariat's activities. The board must also decide on budgeting and use of the funds allocated for the secretariat's activities or otherwise made available to the secretariat.
    Accounting
§ 6 The secretariat's activities must be reported separately in the report that the University of Gothenburg submits to the government in accordance with the regulation (2000:605) on annual reports and budget documents. Ordinance (2000:611).

McMaster in particular flogs this standpoint, though he at least has served his country. Too many intellectuals and other public figures have no compunction about waging war as long as others are doing the dirty work. Will Ferguson's young children, the product of a 'rootless cosmopolitan' union between an Anglo-Scotsman and a Somali-born Dutchwoman who've both been given American citizenship, even consider military service as an option? I wouldn't hold my breath.

The conversation over Charles was so superficial and trite. Niall Ferguson way off again. There is a real issue over the oath and also with his affiliation with the World Economic Forum and Net Zero meddling. Implications too of Welby having been ejected from GAFCON for his rejection of Scripture. Bearing in mind Douglas's points on woke-ism and now Charles supports Manchester University investigation into the Monarchy's links to slavery. There were obvious links to be made about Charles, the Coronation and Douglas's rant at the end.

25:47 The US' decline might be us currently circling the drain as the Federal debt interest payments are greater than total US military spending and no one thinks increasing the labor force participation rate and economic % growth is important.

... In 1968 the US was fighting war and facing Rebel Commies in every region plus had debt payments. It honestly made people wonder if safe to invest in US stocks.. Now no big war can hurt US trade lanes or land, and as % with just 3% defence spending not 8% like 1982 or 10% in 1968. So now is pretty easy to get thru.... Debt payments yes might equal 3%, but come on we wasted like in 1968 far more...... Trump realized this, if can borrow at 2% interest hell yeah do so and avoid need to tax business and poor, at 2% frugality is sorta dumb. We pay 2% since world knows EU and China are worst bets, , , , ,... World is tricky, cant just assume what works on small scale is needed for big scale, US can waste money at this rate forever....

We have yet to see how much damage to the UK that Blair did. He saw racial tensions in the US and thought, we could do with some of that. He decided to entirely change racial demographics beyond all recognition in contradiction to the will of the UK population. Having ended the scourge of PIRA terrorism (by giving them everything they wanted it was not impossible to give) he decided we could do with some Islamist terrorism. He decided to invite in both Pakistani Muslims (who were largely Deobandi (an anti-British radical Islamist sect).and Indian(s who also have a victimhood culture and hate the UK) Hindus, to see if they decide to have a re run of '47 on our streets. Cameron, declared himself the heir to Blair, and with Hyper Immigration said, hold my beer.
