- As Israel and Ukraine struggle for survival, a newer “axis of ill will”-formed by Russia, China and Iran-sows discord around the globe. Stephen Kotkin, the Hoover Institution’s Kleinheinz Senior Fellow and a vaunted historian, joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson and John Cochrane to assess options abroad and parallels to the past (are we reliving the 1930s, the 1970s, or both?). The trio then dons their speechwriters’ hats to suggest how President Biden can capture the moral high ground. The trio then discusses how President Biden can capture the moral high ground when he makes public statements about the crisis and America’s response to it.
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a weekly Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

Stephen Kotkin........LEGEND!
He's a real gentleman
Niall Fergusson....bit embarasing
He talked for half the show and didn't say anything at all.
Movie actor... 😢
Stephen's response to Niall's J Peterson comment showed a lot of class
Kotkin eats Ferguson for breakfast, lunch & dinner every day, 365. It's a pleasure to her him, his calm demeanor when poked by politically motivated rhetoric from his colleagues.
The reason Stephen is so popular is his philosophy not just the history. As well as his empathy with ordinary people like me.
Good luck Stephen, God bless you and all your great supporters. 👍
Townsville Australia 🇦🇺 ♥️
Stephen Kotkin is the most important person to listen to to understand the world today. Thank you!
Kotkin is the best, “ I don’t read The NY Times “
One of many gems from Stephen!
The experience of listening to actual academics (as opposed to the usual political hacks) debate on substantive issues is enlightening. I can't get enough of listening to Stephen Kotkin.
God! I love Stephen Kotkin. He has knowledge, common sense and so much class!
Niall should have let Stephen Kotkin to talk. Stephen's analysis is so profound , but hear constant interruptions from Ferguson was annoying
Stephen Kotkin presents very clear thesis. That's the magnet of his speeches.
Mr Kotkin thinks on another level and it becomes so obvious that he sees 30 years ahead. We need to listen to him.
Kotkin's the man you want in the room when the geopolitical situation is in turmoil..
A great pleasure to listen to honnorable Stephen Kotkin
An hour with Mr Kotkin is just not long enough and for my two cents he's incalculably better than Mr Peterson. Can we have more of him please. He should be a regular member.
This would be insufferable without Stephen Kotkin there to provide common sense.
Once again, Stephen Kotkin shows himself to be the master of applying common sense to geopolitical analysis.
Kotkin was fair. He doesn’t hold back from pointing out an administration’s failures regardless of the party in power. Ferguson betrayed his partisan agenda, which is sad.
I get the sense that Kotkin likes to put Ferguson in his place…
Kotkin!!!! I can listen to him all day long.
Kotkin isn't as partisan, or as right-leaning as the other Hoover fellows. His non-reaction to comparison with Peterson is also telling. Refreshing.
Niall Ferguson is so ideallogically driven that I can't take anything he says seriously.
Always a pleasure to hear from Stephen
This episode made me respect Kotkin far more and Ferguson far less
Agreed. Ferguson hasn’t been at his best lately. Kotkin always shines though.
Kotkin is a very clear thinker and this sets him out from many of his fellows, including the others on the panel here. Partisan thinkers see things as they wish they were. He sees things as they are.
A great discussion today, always a joy to listen to the insights of Prof. Steven Kotkin!
Stephen Kotkin is always a pleasure to listen to, especially in this company. Thanks for this discussion.
Thanks to Stephen Kotkin for holding Niall back from making it a party political broadcast.
mr. hoover: kotkin is the person you should be interviewing. next time please leave ferguson off the panel. he added nothing of importance to the discussion.
Kotkin is such a bright light. He puts together such coherent arguments.
Best guest, I could listen to a conversation like this for hours
Mr. Kotkin is an expert on power , it’s what he’s studied all his life . Listen to what he he has to say
Kotkin is the GOAT in his field
Kotkin has a great way of presenting history, great speaker and story teller. And he happens to focus on a very interesting topic, totalitarianism.
Thank you for bringing Stephen Kotkin again.
Poor Stephen couldn’t even finish a sentence without being interrupted!
Kotkin has some really good points. Sharp analysis and you can tell he has a greater depth and deductive thinking. He has thought about the logic and the facts in light of todays world players. Naill please let everyone else think; your just asking leading questions to support your already predetermined conclusions. Everyone respects Kotin because he explains his points of view with facts. He came with a legal page of receipts. Niall is comes off as a hawk with no receipts.
Stephen Kotkin ❤
Smart, entertaining, and consistently of high quality, what else could you ask for in a podcast?
I wonder how many administrations have tried to recruit Stephen. I hope he says yes one day.
Niall was really rude this episode, constantly interjecting and making unnecessary remarks. Feel like there is jealousy there with Kotkin
Ferguson's partisan sniping stands in sharp contrast to Kotkin's nonpartisan analysis. It makes Ferguson sound less credible and Kotkin more credible.
I wish this episode had been longer. Always a pleasure to listen to intelligent conversation.
Stephen brings the picture into much better focus. He's the best oracle among the three.
Dr Kotkin is the best hands down. Thank you for having him again.
From the first time you hear Kotkin, it’s clear that he knows what he’s talking about. Then when his name comes up in your youtube feed… you click immediately. Much like one’s confidence in Hanson or Sowell.
Niall must be auditioning for a role in a future GOP administration since everything from him recently is politically biased.
Niall is always consistent in his anti-Biden bias and his overlooking of Trump administration failures. It's rather strange for such an intelligent man
Can't wait to hear Stephen on Staline again ! Get volume 3 out !
Kotkin just has a voice and cadence I like listening to. He also knows stuff about the other side of the world and when he talks I actually trust he knows what he is saying. Idk if i should trust him, but add that to your intel. Also, he did two great podcasts with lex fridman -- so good i think most of his viewers started from there
Love me some Stephen Kotkin analysis
Great to hear the thoughts and insights of all three of these gentlemen!
Stephen Kotkin da legend
Always an absolute pleasure to watch Steven Kotkin. Great talk all round, very sobering...
It’s like listening to Joe Pesci giving commentary on the current situation.
Usually Niall is my favorite Goodfellow, but in the early exchange with Kotkin, Niall acted like a garden variety partisan hack. Luckily he redeemed himself in the second half with his usual brilliance.
Thank you Mr. Kotkin. Your take is as close to level-minded and thought-out as anyone could hope for.
I appreciate how Dr. Kotkin handled biased and leading questions with patience, class, and competency👍
Love this collegial disagreement and conversation.
What America needs is a leader who has the credibility and the balls to stand up and say:
"The whole world order that ultimately underpins the American way of life is under threat, and that America is prepared to do whatever it takes to defend it. That the longer America fails to stand up for it's core values of freedom and democracy, then the stronger the authoritarians will become, and the bigger the sacrifice needed to win the inevitable showdown will be".
Mr Kotin's way of explanation and thinking influenced me a lot. Thank you master
Brilliant. Loved it. Its so nice to see a civil discussion with different viewpoints.
We luv Kotkin! Brilliant man!
Thank you. That all of you exists.
The views on the Kotkin videos are actually just me
Niall Ferguson, quite possibly more David Starkey than David Starkey. Each new video or lecture he detaches himself. Moving further and further away from reality.
Grateful for this talk thank you all
Excellent as always. So refreshing to hear an intelligent and thought provoking conversation.
This was very enjoyable. Keep it up.
Love these guys... and Kotkin as a guest is always a treat. Long live the JollyGoodFellows. 🙂
I quite dislike the idea of it but I realize I’m quite the fanboy of Mr. Kotkin.
It is comparatively easy to criticize policy (student loan, e-vehicles, etc.) but this ranting without explanation loses points.
I seem to understand better when Mr. Kotkin speaks. For that I thank him.
Plastic fold up chairs in the middle of an empty room. You could present better than that!
I also wish that they had allowed Dr Kotkin to finish instead of interrupting. Dr Kotkin seems to always start giving context which then leads to a conclusion & we often didn't get to that conclusion.
Not that the input of the others is not valued but to me it was frustrating to listen to. If they need extra time to enable Dr Kotkin to respond in his style they should make the podcast longer.
The legend strikes again like a true rockstar
So many excellent points and insights. Thank you for this excellent discussion at a crucial time.
Excellent discussion. Thank you.
Here is a story with a moral: My aunt’s two kids were fighting. One was throwing rocks at the other. At this point he was not doing a lot of damage to his brother. My aunt scolded the rock throwing brother, telling him if he want to throw rocks, then throw them at targets and not people. She set up a target which he joyfully used for practice . The next time he got in a fight with his brother, his rock struck him directly in the face injuring him this time. The mother’s attempt at deterrence failed. What is the moral of the story? -. She did not deal with the negative antisocial passions of the rock throwing brother (jealousy, envy, hatred, revenge, etc.)
Stephen is so respectful and extremely knowledgeable. I always listen to him because he's in lightning
Jolly good, at least academically! Lets have SK as a 'permanent member' of the good fellows!
Why are they interrupting Stephen Kotkin?
Interesting to see Kotkin with some intelligent opposition. He still comes over as the smartest though the others raised some pretty tough alternate takes .
I thought someone was breaking in in the background at 4:08. What the heck happened? Did a waiter drop a tray of glasses?
Thanks for the fun. You're all good people.
Niall's ego wanted Kotkin on the back foot, right off the bat... taking pages right from Kissinger.
Kissinger, our most senior War Criminal.
I'm now reading "Waiting for Volume 3."
Why was Niall there?
"Have you been to Mar-a-Lago?" 😅 Stephen bodied Niall
It is pretty solid evidence Ferguson doesn't know shame.
He's slinging a narrative that will sell well with Americans who don't like Biden, a valuable market, now way is Ferguson going to let Kotkin, reason, the truth, or intellectual honesty get between him and that paycheck.
That is a weak dig from a coward intellectual. Biden’s house is run by Chinese.
Would love to see Stephen Kotkin and Orlando Figes in conversation
You did it John! Stephen Kotkin is here!
I could not have clicked faster.
Kotkin is great.
Kotkin brings intelligence, nuance, and fresh perspectives with his quick wit and love of humanity. ❤
Excellent as always
Kotkin is on another level
Very good listen
All 3 of them are fascinating! We do not know what we do not know concerning the future - but very very few Americans have any understanding that isolationism does not work and is dangerous. The office of the president needs to educate America yesterday! Follow up talk would be great.
Niall was very unprofessional in this discussion
i definitely gave my clicks, it was a great discussion
The Good Fellows and Stephen Kotkin need merch!
Give me:
A smiling Gen. H.R McMaster shirt with “Eternal optimists love tanks”.
A shirt saying “If you aren’t grumpy you’re doing economics wrong”.
A freedom haggis tshirt.
And most importantly a shirt with Stephen Kotkin face and a quote “Guess what… They’re communists!” Alternative quote “You think I’m funny?”
Enjoy the conversation. Neil asked good questions.
Niall gives it to China. As he should. Love your work here Niall. Love Stephen's work on this too. Love the football guys work, too.
Superb!
Kotkin is insightful and thoughtful. I learn so much from him. The others are just a waste of time. One can only hope they are actually smarter than what comes off as simpleton comments
