Not a country capital, but the state capital of Amapá state in Brazil, Macapá, sits right on the equator. There's a football pitch with one side on the northern hemisphere, and one half on the southern.
That is so effing cool thanks for sharing
@@mynic2176 you're welcome!!
Same like the one in Indonesia, it's the city of pontianak, there's a park called "khatulistiwa park" which translated as "Equatorial park"
@@Isolet.Equatorial Guinea: 😭😭😭
The equator isn't an imaginary, arbitrary line. It's the line equidistant between the two poles, and is the region where the sun is overhead at exactly 90˚ at solar noon on the spring and autumn equinoxes.
zenith! also the tropic of capricorn marks the southernmost latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon. the tropic of cancer marks the northermost latitude... bla bla bla, and the artic and antartic circles mark the limits at which there's at least one one day without sunrise during winter and without sunset during summer
Imaginary but not arbitrary.
Imaginary, because there is no physical sign on the surface that tells where the equator exactly is, we just draw it based on astronomy
Not arbitrary, because it's based on astronomy
Something fascinating I just noticed is that the Maldives has land both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with its southern most island being further south compared to Singapore. I definitely thought the Maldives would be further North.
Male is the capital.
And Kiribatis is in the west east and also north and south
It is not the country's capital, but Indonesia has a province which capital sits right on the equator. It's called Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan. You may found The Equator Momunent in this city, next to the famous Kapuas River.
very cool. same with macapá, capital of the state of amapá in norther brazil
Nusantara would soon make this list at -0.58 latitude.
Kalau nusantara jadi,bisa nih masuk😂
When I visited Singapore when I was 15 I thought finally I would be able to go to the southern hemisphere, only realised later that it falls short a bit and actually in northern only.😅
hahaha go south just a bit like Jakarta or Bali or perhaps cities in Sumatra like Palembang, Padang then yea finally welcome to the Southern Hemisphere 😂 but honestly tho you wouldn’t get much of a difference climate wise here in the tropics except for tropical cities that located further North like Bangkok, Manila, Vientiane, Yangon yupp those tropical climates are a bit different than us who live closer to the equator
The pronunciation of São Tomé is one the wildest things I ever head in the history of the universe. Interesting video though. Cheers
greetings from singapore 🇸🇬❤👋🏼 it is indeed incredibly humid here.
Interesting that three of these countries (Kiribati, Singapore, Nauru) have no land at all on the equator! (São Tomé has a small island that the equator does run through)
Well, Quito was kind of expected 😅but cool to learn about all the others! I thought Quito would be the only one without a hot weather but Kigali, Kampala and Nairobi seem to have nice weather from their altitudes too. I love it
What If Australia 🇦🇺 and Hawaii switched places
💀
You know what that's actually a very interesting question
The USA would gain a lot of land
Then what?
Second Emu war.........?
Been to Kampala and Kigali. I remember we were told to hide plastic bags during border crossing into Rwanda because they are banned. These 2 cities stil have high elevation otherwise it would be really too hot to live.
Kampala looks so surprisingly desirable
Kampala is on my bucket list. I should visit it next year.
Been to Kampala and Kigali. Loved them.
@@chefnyc Bujumbura Burundi
Can't wait to visit Nauru this year.
Edit: also yes, I've bene to Quito and the point where thr equator crisses through as well.
I’ve been to Singapore and Nairobi. I also lived in Quito for several years. It’s odd to hear cities referred to as ‘who’ rather than ‘what’.
Singapore was memorable. If I had the chance to visit again I would.
"this arbitrary, made-up line" - no, the equator is *not* arbitrary or made-up, instead it is defined by the rotational axis of earth.
i know its only 8 minutes but could you please add chapters, it just helps if i miss a name or something that way i can just slide the mouse over the bar instead of rewinding. I know, I'm lazy
If anyone is interested, Malabo, the capital of Equitorial Guinea, has a latitude of 3.44°. It has a population of getting on for 300,000.
PS - People looking for Tarawa on Google Maps may have a difficult time of it - I personally have no connection whatever with Kiribati, or what was known when I was a kid as the Gilbert Islands, but putting 'Tarawa' into the search bar doesn't seem to bring you anywhere, while 'Kiribati' brings you to one of the lesser populated and more outlying islands, where clearly none of the villages (mostly named after European countries and cities, though not, I'm guessing, by the locals?!) are likely to have a population getting even into four figures, let alone 70,000.
While Tarawa itself is considered a city state, like Singapore, the actual heavily built up area is known as _Batio,_ the name you will want to put into the Google Maps search bar if you are looking to check out Tarawa.
Indonesia will soon join this list (I think around #5?) when they move the capital to Nusantara/IKN, Borneo. Which will happen in... 2 months.
Kampala heat index is lower than Houston, TX USA because of its altitude. However, it’s heat index is higher than El Paso, TX at the same time because El Paso is in the desert and Kampala is tropical
I've been to Quito and stood right on the equator!
2:00 - that's the Philippines, and not Rwanda. You can see the iconic public transportation "jeepneys" which isn't used anywhere else. Source: I live in the country.
Nairobi in Kenya , is just south of the Equator. My husband and I lived and worked 50miles south of the Equator , and 150KM from Nairobi. I watched the water going down the plug hole in our bathroom. Sometimes it went clockwise and sometimes it went anti-clockwise . The man with the watering can, a jug and a funnel, who entertains toiurists in Nanuki Kenya , must be faking his display of the water changing direction once he crossed the Equator ! Perhaps someone could explain how he does it ?
I do not cope well with heat and humidity (I’m best when it’s about 12c) but I would go back to Singapore in a heartbeat, best food ever. Also having a SIL who is from there we can get the best recommendations.
Make a top 10 least populated capital cities
nairobi gets pretty cold too....right now its 13 degrees c
That's because it's 1,800m above sea level
@@AllanWhat and i guess lack of mountains between NBO and the coast.... I mean Addis is higher than NBO and doesn't get this chilly
fun fact:The capital of the State Amapá Macapá is literally crossed by the Equator line but it is a state and not a coutry
Fun fact: Peru's northernmost point is just 2 km south from the equator!
I've been to Quito before. At night it can get down right chilly.
6:45 yes, I can guess. It was about a 35 drive from Plaza Grande.
I want video about antarctica territory australia please
The only one on the list I’ve visited was Singapore back in 2013, it was quite memorable honestly for an almost 13 year old kid 😂 it was totally different than my hometown which is Jakarta, Indonesia which is the capital of Indonesia, I took my first MRT and Monorail ride there it was amazing 😍 and obviously do the iconic pose in Merlion statue 😂
I haven't seen the video to the end yet, but I doudt any other capital is closer to the equator than my home town, Quito, Ecuador. You can get to Mitad del Mundo in a 30 minute ride for a picnic. After all... we're called after the *** line!
I've been to Nairobi and Singapore.
I read Indonesia new capital is 0° 38' 44.912" . How far is it? I dont know how to read the symbol because your video only write like -0.53°.
I was worried after the first map that Kampala would be the answer rather than my guess, Quito.
Not yet official, but Indonesia would soon make this list too (#6 to be exact). Nusantara, the new capital city of Indonesia, sit at -0.58 latitude, closer than current capital city Jakarta at -6 latitude.
Shoutout to Ecuador for honoring its name 🎉🎉
I like this video.
Me too
Brazil has Macapá and Boa Vista almost on top on the Equator, but they're just state capitals.
It's Quito
The equator is a circle of latitude that divides a spheroid, such as Earth, into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. On Earth, the Equator is an imaginary line located at 0 degrees latitude, about 40,075 km (24,901 mi) in circumference, halfway between the North and South poles.[1] The term can also be used for any other celestial body that is roughly spherical.
In spatial (3D) geometry, as applied in astronomy, the equator of a rotating spheroid (such as a planet) is the parallel (circle of latitude) at which latitude is defined to be 0°. It is an imaginary line on the spheroid, equidistant from its poles, dividing it into northern and southern hemispheres. In other words, it is the intersection of the spheroid with the plane perpendicular to its axis of rotation and midway between its geographical poles.
On and near the Equator (on Earth), noontime sunlight appears almost directly overhead (no more than about 23° from the zenith) every day, year-round. Consequently, the Equator has a rather stable daytime temperature throughout the year. On the equinoxes (approximately March 20 and September 23) the subsolar point crosses Earth's equator at a shallow angle, sunlight shines perpendicular to Earth's axis of rotation, and all latitudes have nearly a 12-hour day and 12-hour night
Yeah, we know.
Its pronounced Sao Tomay
Country capital Libreville, Gabon.
Macapá - Amapá - Brasil🇧🇷
Funny that you don't show the equator on each country's position.
Mogadishu - semi arid climate
The equatorial line is not arbitrary. Please learn words.
"Spoiler" doesn't mean what you think it means.
Quito left the chat

Hi I am from Singapore 🇸🇬 the 7th closes capital city to the equator
Not true. It's not an imaginary line. I saw it the last time I flew over it. Also it's not red, it's green.
De Facto not De Fecto
Where's the northernmost and southernmost of Tropical evergreen rainforest?
I'm pretty sure both on the American continent. The northernmost could be in Southern Mexico or even northern from that in the Caribbean or perhaps the southernmost tip of Florida but of course everything depends on definition. The southernmost could be a part of a forest that stretches from Bolivia into northern Argentina that could be considered being the southernmost edge of the Amazon.
@mysteriousDSF
Florida has tropical rainforests despite being outside the tropics.
In that case bermuda can also be considered, it's the northernmost tropical climate in the world at 34N, same latitude as Atlanta and higher than Shanghai which get snow in winter.
there is even snow in the tropic.
