- The Toyota rav4 prime is an amazing vehicle. Here is how you plug it in, how the plug adapts and how to lock the plug door and also the plug while it is charging. Also show how to change some settings and to set a charging schedule.
I just bought the same exact vehicle 2 days ago and I thought I knew how the whole plug in charge work until I did it.. I just want to thank you so much. Very helpful.
I am happy to help. Enjoy your Rav4!!
Thanks I was just out there trying to unplug and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't unlock. Another feature the dealer failed to show me. Love the car. Thanks for this video.
i specialize in stuff others dont know or didnt tell their customers
Thank you so much for this video!! I was unable to figure out how to get the charger out of the charging port, until now!! I learned so much more too.
You're welcome!!
Me too!
Important and useful information. That’s for putting it together.
Thank you for your overview it was very helpful as I am considering a RAV4 prime
Happy to help
Thank you Steven, very helpful! Please make more videos on the 2023 Rav4 Prime.
I'll do my best
@@stevenwelchtoyota Is there a way to link a gate opener (for a Mighty Mule gate) through this vehicle?
@@wranglingreptiles7555 if you have the home link system
Very helpful, the scheduling was what I was looking for, amazing, but entire video was excellent! Awesome vehicle, thank you Steve!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this Video, just what I have been looking for. Can you please also do a video on Charging the Rav4 Prime at a public charge station. I’m a newbie and nervous to charge it at public place.
it is easy you plug it in the same way i showed
@@stevenwelchtoyota Thanks for your response! I have a 6.6KW charger but I can’t charger it in my apartment so the only option is at a commercial charge station.
@@backforceforceback2552 it will work at a charging station. Just plug it in the way I showed.
@@stevenwelchtoyota if it’s not too much to ask, can you please do a video on the kind of plugs, circuit breaker one should choose for Rav4 prime? I really appreciate your help and time. Thanks!
Are you aware of any adapter from CCS plug to the J1112?
Thank you! I was starting to freak out in the garage because I couldn’t get my plug to release
Happy to help
I want to get the xse very few colors to pick from, however this prime does offer colors like this one on ruby red that i think look amazing
Yes they do
if doing level 1 at home, does the outlet have to be 15 amp gfi?
I have been having trouble charging my rav4 prime! So i couldn't do the 11 hour charge haha so i installed a new level 2 charger because it only takes 2.5 hours, i can charge it but have lots of trouble with the schedule, my level 2 charger also has a schedule. I can turn off the schedule in the rav4 or i can turn off the schedule on my level 2 charger. I have yet been able to successfully charge on a schedule?? Maybe you can help ! Please!!! Haha thank you
Is there a feature that will not allow the car to start if it’s still plugged in? I’m imagining driving off and ripping the charge cord out since it in the passenger side and I might not see and remember it being plugged in.
i believe so but have not tried it
I was thinking the same thing. I'll rip the whole charging station apart
It will turn everything on but not allow the vehicle to move .
hello sir i have a problem with my rav4 prime 2021 where when am charging it over night or over long period of time it dosn't charge fully it stops half way it never charge fully i have to unplug my 12 v battery and plug it in again and also have problem with the ignition after i finished charging can you please tell me the reason behind this because no one around me knows is it the car or the battery am relly confused thank you
My RPIME is coming in 3 weeks. We have a regular outlet in the garage. Do I need a specific Level 2 charger installed in my garage for faster charging, or can I upgrade my outlet to a 240 Volt -- will that work? Thank you!
A 240 connection will charge it in about 5.5 hours
@@stevenwelchtoyota So no need for a special level 2 charger through my electric company, just the electrician upgrading an outlet, yes?
@@laurabyard6254 240 is mainly what something like Fridges, Washer/Dryer, Stoves and Oven Ranges are using. A regular Electrician is needed(I wouldn't do it myself unless you are trained, 120 probably won't kill you, 240 up to 480 will and arcing either of them generates a ridiculous amount of heat) He just needs to add a breaker to your box and run thick enough wires to an outlet box and you should be GTG.
Personally its not really worth it especially if you are in a garage, plug it in 12 hours before you leave work in the morning, also keep in mind even though the tank is pressurized Fuel can and will go bad that will lead to alot of expensive repairs, I would plan to at least drain and fill the gas tank once every 2 months, some people online are saying they are going 6 months and that is not good. They basically are running it as a 42 mile EV ALL the time. Then again if you can manage running it like that, range anxiety shouldn't exist for you considering what Full EVs get range wise.
Good video, thank you!
Happy to help
It would be nice to access those settings on the bigger screen.
I understand that. It is where they are though
@@stevenwelchtoyota ….was still helpful

Does it come with the charger when you bought it?
yes
HI Come across this video, I don't have it as yet, but looking forward, I Never thought this one out. Great Thank you welshman2081

Almost broke the freaking cord not knowing I had to unlock my car to take the charger out 😅

What if I'm at a charger with CCS plug instead of the J plug?
Thank you!!!!
thanks
Good job buddy. Thank you.
No problem 👍
Can the prime be preheated or cooled before I leave without using the app?
do the regular remote start procedure. hit the lock button 3 times holding it on the 3rd
@@stevenwelchtoyota sorry I'm trying to do it without the remote. For example if I'm taking my daughter to school every morning at 9:00 a.m. i'd like to see if the car can be preheated by our departure time.
@@anthonyg8435 I will have to look but I believe there is a scheduler. I know you can on some prius primes
Thank you thank you thank you 😅

Just subscribed and looking for more videos on my very new vehicle (62) miles.
Would like to set vehicle to not unlock when shifting into park as I plan to use vehicle to do Uber/Lyft and only want to open doors when I have identified correct passenger.
Thanks in advance.
The next video you do please go inside. What were you thinking. ???
i have interior videos. what are you wanting to see?
Thanks for this advice! How important is scheduling the charge ? I just charge when battery is running low...
ITs more about allowing it to charge when there is less strain on the grid. You can charge it whenever though
Do you know if the charge runs out, do gas work? Or do you need both
it will flip to.gas
Love it! Thank you....

When charging from a regular wall outlet, should I select Max Or 8A?
either. I would go as slow as you can for the most effective charge and to prolong the life of your battery.
Just leave the setting at Max as you’ll find charging using most standard wall outlets (being 120V/15A) takes 12+ hours to go from “empty” to fully charged. Empty is in quotes because there’s still juice (~30%) even when your dashboard shows “- -“ so your car can still switch over to Electric when idle at stops.
Do NOT use an extension cord unless it’s thick. Minimum 10 gauge, but recommended 8 gauge thickness. FYI: the lower the number the thicker the cable is. There’s a lot of constant current being pulled through and the thinner cords will get hot and could be a fire hazard. Uncoil completely when using so there’s no proximity heat being transferred to the extension cord!
@@jiggawuhhjiggawho great points
@@jiggawuhhjiggawho XSE model has an optional 6.6 kW onboard charger which is 32 amps of charging current. Can the Rav4 be charged through a house's power outlet where the wiring is rated at 16 amps max? Shouldn't it be a cause of a house fire due to an overload of its electrical system? Of course, if you forget to limit the charging current via the settings of the vehicle as shown in this video.
@@ruslank4028 If you use the charging cable that comes with the XSE when you buy the vehicle then that is rated at 120V/12A. I will ALWAYS fully uncoil my cable so that there is no residual heat being transferred if you leave it coiled up in any way.
Fire hazard comes more from new EV owners thinking they’re just plugging in a hair dryer and use any old extension cord when they pull up and realize their charging cable won’t reach. NOT using 8 or 10 gauge extension cords (avoid altogether if possible) AND leaving them coiled up increases the chance of fire for sure.
I got a Toyota RAV4 prime 2022. I can’t unplug the charger when the battery is not fully charged even when I unlock the car. How to stop charging anytime even the battery is not fully charge?
you should be able to unplug it. you can shut off the lock

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to lock the chargeport door. I close it, lock the car, the chargeport is still unlocked. Are there any settings where locking might be disabled?
On the menu on the center of the instrument cluster
@@stevenwelchtoyota That's where I can set locking the nozzle once it starts charging. My issue is I cannot lock the door of the chargeport after I am done charging. I do not see such option in the instrument cluster.

Talk about charge. Electric cars they say you should charge 80% unless you traveling. What about rav4? Do I charge 100% or just like a EV?
They say to plug it in and let it go
But how do you unlock the door?
Unlock the car
I love you
@@jonathanhawthorne1821 thanks
@@stevenwelchtoyota the instructions with the plug said nothing about the security feature it says push button and pull towards you
@@jonathanhawthorne1821 one of the reasons I made the video is due to that
what if some angry kids smash your plug cover lid?
Did that happen?
I'm sorry, but I'm old, and for me, you went WAY too fast on what I needed to know, and WAY too slow on what I already knew, and I couldn't see whattf you were doing, but at least I finally figured it out, despite that.
Happy to help
Yes, I admit it must have at least helped me find the settings, but it's me, I find it frustrating to try to focus my eyes from the steering wheel to the instrument cluster, which was pretty blurry on the video. But I at least found the page to program the charge. I will know if I got it right in about 30 minutes. Thanks for doing the video, because it did help. I am old, and easily frustrated by modern technologies.
