@@ADDwithJTC the base models are usually the cheapest new models. You can actually look it up on the BMW website and see the times. Your neighbor probably spent his money on either a mid or top trim which have a different engine and that means it'll perform differently.
Supply is also very low. Toyota cannot source enough batteries to meet demand. Most of the batteries are being directed to the Prius Prime, since it is the much better compliance vehicle to meet emissions and fuel economy standards.
Sucker's are born every second. Scotty already completely tore apart the alleged green aspects to these vehicles. Far more wasteful of rare earth minerals than any gas engine car. Heavier which means more tax on it and higher registration fees and insurance.
There are a ton of Prius Prime vehicles to buy right now; no one wants them since they are not SUVs. You can buy a 2018 Prius Prime for only $15,000 which is way less than the $60,000 that the RAV4 Prime is now selling for (they are selling for a minimum of $15,000 over list price).
Plug in hybrid has always seemed to me to be the happy medium between gasoline and electric. Almost all the advantages of each with none of the disadvantages.
Plug-in hybrids are really the best of both worlds. You have a little electric range and also power combined with the gas engine. You also don't have to worry about the battery running down.
Well, what is 1 mistake more for GM, that "none gooder recently" company already made mistakes after mistake for years now, it is no big deal really! It is expected for em to do so!
@@slothypunk GM can’t compete. There are no more federal rebates for them. They reached their 200,000 vehicle limit just like Tesla did. People will look at cars that still have the rebates. Honda clarity is a nice car too with over 50 miles on batteries.
It's not the Rav4 I regret, it's the slimy dealers trying to get into my pockets. The RAV4 is an excellent car, own a 2017 LE (leased at first) but then loved it so much, ended up buying it. Hit a deer head on, and get T-boned by an old man running a red light. After 6k worth of damages, it still runs great.
I work for the company that makes RAV4 transmission. They really care about the quality of the transmission. I am an automation control tech and I see the process of making RAV4 transmissions. they run a bunch of tests and measurements to make sure the transmission is good. if the transmission fails in any process machine, they would stop and do a quality inspection. Every parts of RAV4 transmission is measured.
I currently drive a 2013 plug in Prius, and am picking up a 21021 RAV4 Prime next week. Living on a mountain like I do, ANY previous vehicle, with a manual or auto tranny, was always searching for the right gear. My CVT tranny in the Prius (I assume the 4 will work the same) eliminates that issue. Driving the Prius up the mountain, after 40 years up here, works better than anything else.
I think I might get one of these. Seems smart if it covers your daily commute. You're driving cheap and clean and you don't have to worry about a whole new infrastructure and waiting to charge on road trips.
I’ve had my Prime for a few months and get to work on my electric bill. Plug in at work and get back on the companies dime. Love it, increased my electric bill by about $30 a month.
I’ve had my RAV4 Prime XSE for almost 11 months now and used maybe 3 gallons of gas total! Toyota advises to use at least 5 gallons a year to avoid “stale” gas, so I’m going on a Sunday drive in the country soon. I get an average 50 miles on a full charge, exceeding the advertised range of 42. Absolutely no issues whatsoever! Definitely the “best of both worlds”. I paid list price and got the $7500 federal tax credit.😊
The Chevy volt would run “engine maintenance” if you haven’t used gas recently and it would run the engine for a small amount of time to keep gas from getting stale. I wish the prime did that but not a major issue.
I just got my 2021 RAV4 prime in Rochester NY and drove it back to Seattle (can’t get them in Washington) got 40.3 mpg on trip w/o charging the battery. (Most motels and hotels along I-90 don’t have plug-in spots). It’s the smoothest, most comfortable car I’ve owned! (Last car 2013 Ford Fusion plug-in)
Hey Scotty: This is THE BEST SALES PITCH I'VE EVER HEARD!! I am serious! Toyota should show this video to their salesmen. If I was in the market for a vehicle, I would run to the dealership and grab a RAV4 NOW! -:) The key is to believe in what you sell and know your product. This is the textbook example of a good salesman! CONGRATS UNCLE SCOTTY!! -:)
I ran to the Toyota dealer near me for a RAV4 Hybrid and trust me, you won't be able to grab one! I've had one on order for about two months now and still no word on when it will arrive. But as I own a Camry and a Corolla now, I am happy to wait for it as opposed to getting something else less desirable that's available now!
Toyota could easily sell over a million Rav4 Primes in North America if the supply was there...... but sadly only about 10,000 are being built for NA 😢
we just cleaned the hybrid battery cooling vents on our 2016 RAV4 hybrid. Our last car and disabled veteran. when we change the air cabin filter, we are always surprised how dirty it gets.
I've owned a Rav4 Prime for seven months now. The average fuel consumption over that period is equivalent to 61.5mpg with a near 50-50 split of in-town and out-of-town driving (where obviously the out-of-town required gas). I love the acceleration and I've even grown to enjoy the quirkiness of the poorly tuned suspension and torque steer at high power. Mostly, though, I love the power. Overtaking on a hill? No problemo! This car is insanely zippy which for me is a big plus as I'm used to driving 2 seat, mid-engine sports car - by contrast I found the Honda Pilot to be annoyingly slow and dreary to drive. So overall very happy with purchase - this vehicle is a great transition from gas to electric. I expect the range/recharging issues will be fixed in electric cars over the next 5 to 10 years, but until then... this is the car for me!
@@Sunshine_day The EV portion of the battery is roughly 15kWHr. Off-peak charging (overnight) averages around 11c per kWHr, so around $1.65. Averaged for the year (now with 6,100 miles on the clock) the EV range is 43.5 miles. So if gas cost $3.30 a gallon I'm averaging 87 MPGe in pure electric mode. This compares with my 1999 Isuzu Rodeo V6 which put out 205HP an averaged 17MPG.
How do you get a Rav4 Prime. Dealers I talk to just say they don't have one and won't be able to order one. They say they can only sell what is 'allocated' to them. Any advice?
I bought one of these in September 2021 and I love it. I drive full electric for my work commute. You might not believe me but I’ve only filled up the gas tank at least 6-7 times since buying it.
I've had my Toyota Rav4 Prime now for three years. Mine is a less than 500 VIN (so an early one off the line). We've had absolutely no problems 43,000 miles later. I charge it up at home every night (regular outlet). It's my daily driver. I only have to gas it up for trips out of town; averaging six fill-ups each year. I love it. I have absolutely no regrets.
@Matthew Aniston I got a used rx 450h. I guess I can say its my dream car cuz I never thought I would be able to get one. You cam dream of a ferrari, ill dream of my lexus, and when I wake up, it will he in my driveway.
Just picked up my 2021 Rav4 hybrid XLE 2 days ago- sport mode 🙌🏻 yes please! Better hold the wheel when you hit sport mode! no discounts to be found here in California, quite the sting on my wallet however, I have 550 miles to go before I need to fill up with gas and this car is gonna last me until I die. Another great review Scotty.
I have an 8 mile commute one way. This seems to be the perfect vehicle to finally replace our venerable and super reliable 03 RX300, that has 195k miles. Plan on driving the RX to at least 210k miles, then will be looking to get the RAV4 Prime. Was thinking about the new Venza, but it doesn't have a plug in hybrid.
My 2002 RX300 has 206,000 miles on it. I am thinking about doing the timing belt again because I want to keep my car as long as possible. The RAV4 Prime will be a serious candidate for my next car. I’ve had my 2002 Lexus RX since Feb 2002. I feel so blessed.
OK, I admit it. I know you don’t like Hybrids, but I have a 2016 XLE. I hate my dealer but I love this car. I want that Prime! Gimme! I have had zero problems. I was hit in Charlotte by 3 other cars and the repair for relatively minor damage was over $10,000. (Sensors). I still love it and before and after the repairs it has remained trouble free. I avereage just over 32 mpg.
This is so much better than the domestic plug in hybrids. I've been shopping, and this setup with AWD is way better than competition for similar pricing
I got my 2021 Prime XSE Premium when they first came out on the first way in July of 2020. I had to get it in CT and drive it back to TX. I admit I for get to charge it a lot but still average 70mpg. When I was charging and home and work I was getting 199+mpg. It’s a good car.
I think Toyota's made a brilliant move with the RAV4 Prime; a lot of states and provinces have incentives that make it an affordable option, and for general inter-city commuting, a lot of folks could easily do that on the batteries. Should be interesting to see how they influence things in the next 5 years or so. Sidenote, that lilac tree looks gorgeous! We have a big one in front of our house (in London, ON) but we have gotten frost almost every night for the last week, and the flowers are only about 1/3 as much this year. Nice to see a full one like you have.
Look, you can't just drive in EV mode all the time. Any Toyota mechanic will tell you this. The car must be driven in combo mode to save the battery and the gasoline from "spoiling". Yes, gasoline will spoil! Lastly, you can't recharge the battery every night or it will degrade over time. It must be charged intermittently and not "overcharged". That is, it must be turned off (unplugged) after about 6 hours. Just search RUclips for the "The Car Car Nut" and he will explain how to charge/take car of Toyota hybrid and Prime RAV4s in one of his informative videos.
@@randy74989 I am well aware that there are technicalities. Even with some hybrids that are easy on gas, people have had tanks start to go bad if they don't go through it quickly enough. This is the only downside to RUclips comments - I try not to make them too long-winded, which means not adding big long technicality footnotes to a general statement.
Makes a lot of sense as a transitional vehicle to electric. In Chicago I'd never use the gas, even if I lived up to about 20 miles out in the burbs instead of the city itself. Run on gas for out of town trips where the still-slow pace of charging gets in your way. Enjoy the towing which is much better on this than a standard RAV4. And Scotty notes the traction issue on this; it probably needs bigger brakes and definitely better tires.
FYI Southern California dealers are factoring in the $7500 rebate into the price of the prime. Sticker price is $45000. If you could pay 38k plus tax then get the rebate this would be worth it.
I haven't driven a Rav4 Prime but I agree with Scotty that the Tesla Y has a crappy ride. I test drove one two different times and I also test drove a VW ID4. I liked the ride of the VW ID4 much much better. I wasn't impressed with the Tesla Y, just vastly overpriced for what you get. I felt every bump in the rode.
for those who wonder, I also have the Prius Prime Advance. The resell price is insane! So instead, I sold it to my niece. She can sell it and make great money!!!
I bought a 2015 Toyota Prius C 2 primarily to run back and forth to the office. My mileage from my Tundra went from 24 gals every 1-1-1/2 week to 9 gals every month! It is not one of the plugin models either! Works well! Shuts off at lights but keeps the A/C going still, unlike my Jeep with the Stop-N-go feature! If you are easy on the throttle you can go on the battery until around 35mph or more than 1/2 throttle then the eng. starts. Once drove 421 miles on a trip on one tank of gas (9.3gal) and that was about 90% cruise at 75mph on I-95.
GF just got the XLE premium. Gotta say I’m impressed with the RAV4. Really smooth ride! The prime was to expensive, dealership in SoCal was asking for 60k for the car😳
Here in Alberta Canada. We dont get the high rebate although Quebec does so most Primes go to Quebec. They are difficult to get here. A three year wait. Lots can change in 3 years. The dealerships also have them marked way up because they are so rare and high in demand. I have a friend that showed us his. It is a remarkable car ahead of its time. Thanks for the review. Another good one. I am quite addicted to the Scotty channel.
SCOTTY - Our 2018 Prius hybrid averaged 60.4 mpg on a recent 130 mile Interstate 20 trip from Kilgore, TX to Dallas at 65 -70 mph. Breaking hard in bunched up traffic I kept battery level high so I could run electric at those speeds, unless on an upgrade. EPA states Prius can only go 20 or so miles full electric yet used intermittently if you monitor usage, I used only about 2 gallons of regular for the trip.
We really like our Rav4 Prime. A great car in general (this is our 3rd Rav4) and you get some of the benefits of an EV (quiet, torque, fuel efficiency) without any concerns with having to plan when, where and how to charge. You can drive on gas, drive on electric, charge while running on gas or charge at home. There is no way I would by an EV given the current situation with charging times and charging stations. When those issues are solved in ten years I'll rethink the situation if I'm still around.
@@MaryPAULINElove No but I can live without those features knowing there is the ability to fuel the vehicle off every exit on I-95 or within a mile of any hotel I happen to be staying at in five minutes. I’m currently staying at an Airbnb with no access to charging. No problem. I drive on gas and while driving charge the EV battery. I don’t have to be concerned with finding a charging station and sitting there for an hour or more charging a battery.
I have a 2021 engine operated rav4 and there's nothing I miss from other vehicles , it's comfortable ride. I've wanted to upgrade to the Prime but there's no manufacturer incentive because of the demand...😰. Maybe next year ...
RUclips detected we just bought one and recommended this. I came from a Prius Prime, then switched to a Rav4 Hybrid due to having a kid. Missed the convenience of plugging in, so tried and got a Rav4 Prime. The step up from the Hybrid is awesome, plus it got more range than our Prius Prime.
I agree Scotty I own a 2013 Prius base model and waas a foreign car mechanic for 20 years and the Prius is by far the best engineered car out there mine has well over 150,000 mile with just normal maintenance.
Hoping they'll bring the Corolla Cross SUV to the US from Asia. Suppose to be available either all gas or hybrid. Don't need something as big as RAV4 but the Cross looks just right.
I like my old mechanical diesels....this one has so much tech it makes my brain melt...I'm sure it's nice to drive but I'd rather be able to repair my car myself than being fancy...
I love Toyota's conservative ways. I've owned 3 Prius cars over the years and still have 2 Prius v wagons. We love the Prius v for size and ease of entry and exit for an old man, like me.
What's nice is that the Prime does not need to be plugged in to unlock the 301 hp. It's always available within the hybrid system even when the EV battery is drained. The problem is that some Prime owners do not realize that under EV mode you will not get that hp and this video is a testament to that as at 6:35 the launch was slow under EV mode.
Should be against the law or at least against Toyota dealership standards to put that much of a mark up on any vehicle 🚗.. any dealership doing that should lose their Toyota dealership..
I, too, refuse to pay over MSRP! Mountain States Toyota (Colorado) does not up- charge (“buyer’s premium”). They put you on a waiting list and let you know when a vehicle is available. You don’t put any money down until you say “yes” to a particular RAV4 Prime. I got mine in June and am so happy with it! (And I’m not a “car freak”).
Just got a prime XSE. Have to pay 5 k over sticker. Many dealer were asking over 10k so I think I can live with it. Really like the car and no inventory.

I bought my Toyo HiAce van in 1643, only needed to change the candle oil and flux capacitor. Need to book in with Doc Emmett Brown. Toyo can last 300+ years if you change oil 👍
Got a rav 4 adventure. As much as I would love the extra horsepower on the regular road, I still prefer having a sport mode as it drives far better and different off road traction features. And as he said, the car has more horsepower but it is basically a front wheel drive car. The rav 4 adventure has a little less than 2000 more pounds of towing capacity which comes in handy for me. Prime only has about 1700 pounds of towing which is really nothing different than the 2018 rav 4 le. So one thing I like is the different options that Toyota provides with the models people already love. I absolutely love the rav 4 line up and when I had the money, I traded my rav 4 le 2018 for the 2021 adventure. Very happy with it too. It has about 30-40 more horsepower than my LE and far more towing capacity. I know it sounds dumb to toe with a rav 4 but the rav 4 is my daily driver and once in a while I do have to tow something like a tool box or even a small camper.
Latest on TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID (5th Generation) AWD Just spoke to my brother who lives in Europe and is an automotive enthusiast, he said a Memo was just released regarding serious issue in RAV4 HYBRID... AWD only... So it turns out that the cable running to the motor that powers rear axle is corroding and needs replacing, it's a roughly $3,000 repair. Models effected 2019 - 2022 build in CANADA. Memo also mentions USA but I didn't know they made RAV4 in USA.
Thanks for the different insight on the R4P Scotty. Got myself a 2021 XSE Premium that I paid MSRP for. All other reviews just talk about statistics but you give a great mechanic's view over it. Been using it for local grocery getting/ drop kid to school off driving and no complaints so far. I easily get 52 mile range now, -2 w/ AC on which works out. Curious how things will be long term though.
PHEVs make good sense. I commuted with a C-Max Energi fir eight years. Lifetime MPG +97 MPG. Now that I’m retired, I buy gasoline about every 6-8 weeks.
Interesting... Of all the different make and model cars I’ve driven, I’ve never driven a hybrid or electric. Your rave review for the RAV4, just might entice me to drive one.
Go try one out. I drove ‘97 for years then a ‘2010 V6. I tried out a ‘16 XLE and loved it. It is very comfortable, drives well, and gets about 32 mpg consistently. FYI I have never had a repair other than brakes on any of the three. Love you Toyota! You keep stress out of my life.

This is one of the hardest vehicles to get the demand is so high.

@@Racontact how?
Plug-in hybrids are really the best of both worlds. You have a little electric range and also power combined with the gas engine. You also don't have to worry about the battery running down.
I guess you can upgrade the tires and when they wear out, put the original tires back on and calm down.

That's the advantage of watching your opponent and having a great R&D department 🤙🏽
My sister is ready to get a prime RAV4. After getting to test drive, it’s a rocket!
Good luck finding one.
How does that tax credit actually work out?
@@jesseschilling5225 they give you 7500$ when you do your taxes
The Chevy volt would run “engine maintenance” if you haven’t used gas recently and it would run the engine for a small amount of time to keep gas from getting stale. I wish the prime did that but not a major issue.
I just got my 2021 RAV4 prime in Rochester NY and drove it back to Seattle (can’t get them in Washington) got 40.3 mpg on trip w/o charging the battery. (Most motels and hotels along I-90 don’t have plug-in spots).
It’s the smoothest, most comfortable car I’ve owned! (Last car 2013 Ford Fusion plug-in)
(Oh! And my fusion’s lifetime 67,000 miles mpg is 149 mpg. Hoping to do much better with the RAV4 prime…I like getting gas 3-4 times a year!)
I bought one. Its fast, efficient, great ride, power, comfort.
I love this guy! He makes me smile and these days that is worth so much❤️
Hey Scotty: This is THE BEST SALES PITCH I'VE EVER HEARD!! I am serious! Toyota should show this video to their salesmen.

How much is the electricity cost to fully charge it?
@@Sunshine_day The EV portion of the battery is roughly 15kWHr. Off-peak charging (overnight) averages around 11c per kWHr, so around $1.65. Averaged for the year (now with 6,100 miles on the clock) the EV range is 43.5 miles. So if gas cost $3.30 a gallon I'm averaging 87 MPGe in pure electric mode. This compares with my 1999 Isuzu Rodeo V6 which put out 205HP an averaged 17MPG.

That RX powertrain is barely broken in.
Glad to know the RAV4 Prime got your seal of approval because I just bought one today! Very happy with my decision so far!

That's awesome. I had to wait for about 8 months for mine and didn't pick up until Sept '21. Fortunately, I still had a car to use while waiting.
My dream car !! I recently got a 2018 rav and I wish I got this :/ it’s okay I’m blessed and lucky that I have a car
They are looking to phase out the incentives now
Yes, I was waiting to see your take on this SUV!
No similarity as it is a Toyota.
my RAV4 2021 will be delivered this weekend. Can’t wait after long waiting period
“I wish I would’ve never bought that Toyota” funniest thing Scotty has ever said 😂
We just ordered a Rav4 XSE. 2 months to come in! Damn. Can't wait.
Yup, I just ordered one and dealer said it should arrive in July!

Another good one. I am quite addicted to the Scotty channel.
A mechanic that I used to go to bought his wife a non-electric Toyota Rav-4. He spoke very highly of it.
When those issues are solved in ten years I'll rethink the situation if I'm still around.
interesting, does it automatically close side mirrors? and have powerlift gate without using hand?
@@MaryPAULINElove No but I can live without those features knowing there is the ability to fuel the vehicle off every exit on I-95 or within a mile of any hotel I happen to be staying at in five minutes.
