Hey Scottie, as a well known RUclips automotive personality, I am quite surprised and quite frankly shocked that you of all people do not know that the eCVT in the RAV 4 doesn’t use a belt (like you pictured in this video). Check out Weber Auto’s RUclips channel for a breakdown of the RAV 4 hybrid’s transaxle.
Gotta disagree with the ultra-reliability about Hybrids being less than the normal variants. The Prius is notorious for being one of, if not, the most reliable vehicle in the world, all of which are hybrids. The E-CVT used in Toyota’s hybrids have been consistently rated for higher reliability than their engine-only counterparts, especially since there are less moving parts.

We currently own 3 Toyotas. A 2005 Tacoma, a 2008 RAV 4 Limited, and a 2021 Venza Hybrid. Our first Toyota was a brand new 1970 Land Cruiser. We've owned many Toyotas and they have always been great cars and trucks. Our Venza got 48 mpg going on a 3000 mile trip with only a 1000 miles of break in.
Just bought a 23 xle gas model. My wife's 3rd rav4 and she loves it. Definitely a good upgrade from the 16. Rides smoother and feels more refined and expensive. I expect the same reliability as the previous models. They go great in the snow also
I have the 2021 Rav4 Hybrid XLA and its hands down the best vehicle I've ever owned! I'm averaging about 43 MPG in the summer in Northern VA and 38-40 MPG in the winter. Fun to drive too!
We bought a RAV4 hybrid a couple months ago (after waiting a few weeks to get it - couldn’t find a prime). Great vehicle and great ride. Went to the mountains a few weeks after we got it and had to drive up some ridiculously steep roads. It was amazing how well “trail mode” worked for that.
Scotty, maybe you should explain the e-CVT is not a conventional CVT. It uses a Planetary Gear set to control the drive ratios. There are no belts or pulleys like a traditional CVT. It’s bulletproof and very smooth. I’ve had 5 RAV 4’s since 2006 and my 2022 Hybrid has the smoothest powertrain by a mile.
Hey Scotty, I have recently taken ownership of a 2022 Rav4 as well here in the UK. The car delivers amazingly low fuel consumption for a car of its size, very smooth ride, quiet most of the time and plenty of space. The funny thing is, here in the UK, they are not popular and people look down on the badge - they opt to go for many of the German brands or Land Rover!!! Yet all these competitors offer almost half the mpg, for a smaller sized car, cost more and less reliable! 😆 Glad to see that at least in the US people value real quality engineering vs. the badge on the car 😌
I think its because here people value feel of the drive and experience more. and my god do German cars drive better than Japanese or Korean! having driven many cars from all the well known brands, there is definitely a big difference between cars from Toyota etc which are good cars, but generally boring to drive, and cars from BMW, Mercedes and VW which each in their own field are difficult to beat in terms of driver experience. for getting from A to B cheaply and reliably, sure! go for Toyota. But if you enjoy driving then go German.
People in the UK and as well as on the Island, such as Jamaica and Haiti, tend to respect the badge of a vehicle rather than its quality. It’s an egoistical problem for them.
One little correction. When you were talking about the CVT, you showed a picture (time 1:33) of a belted CVT. Toyota's hybrid CVT's are not belted CVT's. The are e-CVT's using planetary gears sets in conjunction with the electric motors and do not use belts.
@@mrofnocnon - there any number of RUclips videos that describe how the Toyota hybrid transmissions work. By applying engine power on one side and electrical power from the opposite side through planetary gear sets, they can simulate a CVT quite nicely but there are no belts involved. The only thing that prompted my response was Scotty putting up a picture of a belted CVT when he was talking about the transmission and that is not what is in the car.
@@Intrepid175a Agreed the e-CVT the Toyota uses is undoubtedly the best. All other CVT's still use the belt with all the inherent weaknesses of a drive based on friction.
@@Intrepid175a This. Toyota and Honda design and manufacture their own belt-less e-CVTs, which is why they are so well made and reliable. Nissan has a plant that makes traditional belted CVT for Nissan cars and other Asian, American and European car brands. Avoid at all costs.
@@thoso1973 - totally agree, although I'm driving a Subaru Outback at the moment. ;-) I've looked at them for a very long time and was bummed when Subaru dropped the manual transmission option in 2015 but it was what it was. I've read about the Subaru CVT's having issues just like pretty much every other belted CVT but I've also read about a bunch of them in more recent times making 200k or more with no problems. It mostly depends on not abusing the car and staying on top of routine maintenance. That's true of all cars including Honda's and Toyota's so I decided to take the chance. The car is not old enough or high enough mileage yet for me to be worrying about it but I'm no hot rodder and I do intend to stay on top of the maintenance so I'll see in time. Fingers are crossed!
Plug-in Hybrids are the best of the two worlds. For city driving, You can use basically only EV mode and save lots on gas. If You go on road trip, You can go whitout the range anxiety. And the best part, it's a Toyota!
@@captinbeyond No he was not, it is about a mile with 1.6 KWH battery under 30KM/H. The Nissan E-power hybrid not sold in US, Qashqai with larger battery at 2.1 KWH can go 2-3 miles.
@@captinbeyond the sort of daily mileage that people in the US cover, maybe a plug in hybrid wouldn't be all that useful. In the UK, 40 miles in a day and charging overnight would probably cover 90% of their mileage - my main worry would probably be the thought of fuel sitting in the team unused and going bad.
@Scotty, the Hybrid are 4WD because they have a independent electric rear motor. That rear motor is rated at around 54hp if my memory doesn’t fail me. I know those details because my wife owns one since 2019 and it’s been amazing. We traded her Jeep Grand Cherokee for the RAV4 and we’ve been pretty happy with the MPG’s and how reliable is, besides how comfortable it is. Also the handling in that RAV4 feels like a car more than a SUV.
We just lost our 2009 RAV4 Limited in an accident, our insurance company totaled it. We had just over 185,000 miles on it and it was still going strong, 15 years strong, and no mechanical issues!. We are looking to buy another, this time a hybrid limited and if we can do it, a plug in. Thank you always for your great videos, much appreciated!
Thank god I listened to Scotty’s advice. I got lucky and found a 2011 rav4 with less then 50k miles. I have No car payments and it’ll last longer then a lot of other newer cars.
You are so true about people avoiding dealerships which rip off the customers, thinking that they are fools. Customers never forget about their experiences and stay away from those dealerships.
While Old Sparky (my 2001 Camry) was having the air intake repaired, I rented a 2022 RAV4. I’ve never been an SUV person due to my small stature, and not liking having to climb into my vehicle every time I had to go somewhere, but this vehicle completely changed my mind. I don’t have to climb into it, it’s great on gas without being a hybrid, it’s spacious but not too big, it leaves more room in my garage than my Camry, it’s zippy when I need it to be, and I’ve completely fallen in love with it! After this video, I will definitely be buying one in the near future! Thank you Scotty!!
Those RAV4s are so quick. My buddies gf bought the brand new prime hybrid when she switched jobs. That thing drives like a DREAM compared to my laggy I4 Taco
My Rav4 Prime is averaging 85 MPG. REAL WORLD MPG with 16,000 miles calculated in that average. I live where I rarely drive less than 50 miles round trip. I've been getting a maximum of 52 miles on a full charge. So I'm happy with it.
Got a 2021 Prime for the wife and it handles extremely well. I averages 45 to 52 miles on fully eletric depending on how u drive it. Combine I am getting over 120MPG. Can't beat that!
Bought a used 2010 RAV4 with an AWD 6 Cylinder in 2018. Over 70k miles later and I absolutely love my car. I get decent gas mileage, the back is large enough for my double bass drum set, (albeit barely ha!) and at 6’4” (or 194 cm) I’ve slept in the back of it numerous times, and it’s still pretty damn quick. I just wish the fuel tank was larger haha
Dear Scotty: I was in Madrid, Spain 2 weeks ago and you will get surprised seeing that all the taxi drivers are Corollas and Prius hybrids. This situation is really amazing. And also there is a lot of HRV Hybrids, Rav4 Hybrids (as a matter of fact there is only Hybrids Rav4 in Europe, there is no one gasoline Rav4).
We bought a 2022 RAV4 XLE Prime in February. My wife and I 100% love this car. It gets close to 50 miles on ev and after a 3 hourz on our level2 recharge In Our garage, we can go another 50 miles the same day. Also since most of our driving is EV, we typically travel 1500 miles between 16 gallon refills. In fact, we we didn’t travel hundred of miles each month for business, we’d be still on the dealer tank-full. Let’s talk performance, it really gets 0-60 in under 6 seconds. The only other vehicle Toyota sells that’s faster off the,one is their Supera sports car. In my opinion, the gas saving is a nice bonus, but buy the car for the pure joy of driving a very capable 4-wheel, spacious and comfortable SUV.
@@neekyboo77 I buy Toyotas new as long as it’s not the first year. But, it really depends on the previous owner. My circle of pals routinely give cars away to each other as long as the cars are decent. You lose thousands of dollars in depreciation once you drive it off the lot. I do have some OBDII scan tools, but am getting too old to wrench. If Scotty buys a new car, I’ll buy one too if fits my needs and is affordable. (That is, if I survive the Heart Attack of him buying new) 🥰
Scotty ! You need to watch the video from Weber auto on the Toyota E-CVT trans . No belt or pulleys like you keep showing. It is just 2 motor-generators and gears . I have a '22 Venza AWD which is same chassis as RAV4 , A Fantastic car !
I just got a new car a month ago and I was deciding between a rav4 hybrid and a subaru crosstrek. I had my name on 3 lists for the Rav 4, at MSRP, but ultimately went with the Subaru Crosstrek. Overall I don't drive enough miles to justify the extra cost of the Rav4 Hybrid, plus I liked the extra clearance and the Subaru awd system, there are times I have to get through a foot of a snow to get to work. Also anyone needing a new car now, dont pay over msrp, there are dealers out there not doing dealer markups and dealer addons. There are more doing it than not, but if you put in the work you will find them.
@@fallguy4209 Actually the Rav4 Hybrid sits lower at 8.1 inches, so half a foot lower. While this won't matter to most people it was part of my decision since I live in snow country and there are times my driveway and the road to work aren't plowed. In terms of reliability, this is my 5th Subaru and I've never had an issue. My choice of going Subaru had nothing to do with which was better, both are great cars, but rather which fit my situation better.
@@Gardeningishardinarizona the only reason I prefer Toyotas is because my 2015 camry has been extremely reliable and I’ve always heard good things about Toyota. I’m sticking with the brand
I was going between a rav4 and Subaru Forester. The two I was looking at the forester was safer & had better reliability. Idk why people get so angry on these comments …. Subaru is great just like Toyota. It just depends on what people wantZ
I had a choice this January. Buy a slightly used 2023 hybrid RAV-5 for $49,000 or buy a slightly used Mazda CX-5 mid level trim for $29,000. At a $20,000 difference that buys a lot of gas or even parts before I make up that price difference. On gas alone I make up the $20,000 over 18 years. Since the Mazda CX-5 is about as reliable, I went ahead and bought the Mazda and we are very happy.
Dear Scotty, I have the 2021 non-hybrid LE model and I have to say that even that, with its conventional automatic, is geared towards fuel economy. Acceleration is not one of its strengths, no matter the manual or automatic mode or whether the sport button is pushed. By modern standards it is sluggish and in certain merging situations downright dangerous. This, however, is not to complain or put down the RAV4. It is an efficient car with decent fuel economy. On highways I usually get 36+mpg (again, that's the gasoline only model).
I consistently get over 40mpg in my 2019 camry 4 cylinder with 200hp on the highway with a 8 speed tyranny using my cruise control and its not a hybrid version either
@@readtherealanthonyfaucibyr6444 depends on your driving. The RaV4 is rate 40/39/38 most people see best 37 combined. Driving it city some see as low as 33.
@@cb5110 What gives you an accurate gauge as to what most people are getting? Is that from a real world driving data website? Being rated at 40 city and only getting 33 would require a lead foot and not be typical results. EPA estimates have been more "realistic" since 2008. Economical drivers find it easy to beat EPA estimates, especially in Hybrids. I have an older prius with a crappy battery and still get 57 combined in the summer, and that's with a decent amount of highway, so I'm getting around 60 or slightly above in the city. I would guess that an economic driver can get mid to upper 40s combined and close to 50 city in the Rav4 hybrid
I have read that for people who live where there is salted snow on the roads; they are experienced corroded power cables going to the rear electric motor. The solution to this is the drill a small drain hole on the bottom of the connecter cable 'cup', so that it does not hold salt water in that 'cup', that's what corrodes the connector. Replacing that cable cost $3,000.
I have a 22 RAV4 Hybrid XLE, I love it! We traded in a 2020 Corolla Hybrid. The Corolla was getting 60 mpg, the RAV is getting 48-53 mpg now in Ohio. (last tanks calculations were 53.5mpg) We know the mpg will fall in the winter, but that is to be expected. Our local dealership charged MSRP as well. I got mine in 3 weeks, it was an allotment. The Prime will more than likely not be available here per Toyota. The midwest isn't going to have them readily available. We are patiently waiting for the BZ4X. You're the best Scotty!
Scotty, EV mode is very useful. I use it all the time. At Drive Up Windows. Stuck in Traffic. My favorite use of EV Mode is when I want to either 'Warm Up' or 'Cool Down' my RAV4. I simply start it up set it in EV Mode then make sure my A/C or my Heater is working. I make sure the Seats are either Venting or Heating. Or have the Wipers De-Icing and the Steering Wheel heating up. EV Mode is great for all those things Oh...and I also while the RAV4 is idling in EV Mode I will turn on the Sat-Radio then 'Pause it'. Why? Because then after it has built up X-amount of pause on it I then can skip commercials or go to the next song if I want. Good Times! PS: As for Mileage I will fill up then get a receipt and then do the Arithmetic. It is more accurate then what the vehicle tells me what my mileage is. I usually get 1 or 2 more MPG by doing it that way. It is simply more accurate.
Don't mostly drive it in EV mode, if you don't use your full tank of fuel completely up within a 2 month period you'll eventually stuff your engine up.
@@lindap.p.1337 If you are calculating your mpg based on the number of gallons the gas pump says it pumped, that is not accurate either. The gas pumps can be off as well and of course they say they pumped in more than it actually did to rip us off.
Doesn't your foot on the pedal determine whether it's in EV mode or not? Why push a button for it when your foot always made the real determination? Drive gently in a parking lot and you'll be in "ev mode" whether you push a button for it or not.
I have 2022 Toyota RAV4 XLE hybrid and I live in Asheville Nc I get 44 to 53mpg mix driving city highways and backroads, these things are amazing and love it.

One year wait list here in Australia too. Buyers are all over this car and have been for 2 years
I don’t trust German vehicles at all. I rather go for reliability. Hello from California by the way!!
Is your RAV4 a hybrid or plug-in hybrid?
Then they are not continuously variable transmissions and are misnamed.
Got one on order. Ordered 24th Dec 2021. Delivery is aparently Oct 2022. Cant wait for it really.
Plug-in Hybrids are the best of the two worlds.
For city driving, You can use basically only EV mode and save lots on gas. If You go on road trip, You can go whitout the range anxiety.
And the best part, it's a Toyota!

@@captinbeyond Scotty was referring to the standard hybrid not plug in hybrid.
@@captinbeyond it really helps in stopa and go traffic and better pickup because of the electric motos.
Hey Scotty, we have the 2022 RAV4 XLE. It's not a hybrid but we're happy with it.
And??
What's your real world mpg on that baby?
I have the exact same. I typically get 25-28 mpg city but 37+ highway
same 2021 xle. not a hybrid but I like it :) 26-28mpg in the city
Just got my wife a regular 2022 Rav4 LE FWD. We got it for MSRP as well. Found one dealer in Galveston that wasn't marking them up.
Please please please tell me their name, i just drove home from Galveston and I am in the market for a RAV4 and Highlander
Thank god I listened to Scotty’s advice.
I got lucky and found a 2011 rav4 with less then 50k miles. I have No car payments and it’ll last longer then a lot of other newer cars.
Very nice, congratulations.

I have a ‘19 RAV4 Adventure. All gas, my best mpg is 43 and lowest in the winter around town with 5 min. Warm ups is 27 mpg!
Any car, hybrid or not, will get worse mileage in the winter.
For a minute there, I thought Scotty bought a Brand New Car and that the world would end. 😁

How much mark up did you pay?
Lol Subaru is garbage reliability and the rav4 has the same ground clearance 8.7 inches.
We are literally trying to make the same choice between rav4 and cross trek, and maybe a forrester.
@@Gardeningishardinarizona the only reason I prefer Toyotas is because my 2015 camry has been extremely reliable and I’ve always heard good things about Toyota. I’m sticking with the brand

Oddly enough I got a rav 4 last year for the same reason. I absolutely love mines
Just bought an 2024 LE regular love it don't want to mess with hybrid cuz I want to own this over 10 years
Right on Scotty. I remember everybody that tried to rip me off and never do business with them again. And I tell everyone what they did
Dear Scotty, I have the 2021 non-hybrid LE model and I have to say that even that, with its conventional automatic, is geared towards fuel economy.
I consistently get over 40mpg in my 2019 camry 4 cylinder with 200hp on the highway with a 8 speed tyranny using my cruise control and its not a hybrid version either
hybrid get better mileage for city not necessary highway.
Hybrid vehicles are build for city driving...
The newest 2022 Camry Hybrid is rated at or near 50 city and hwy!
That is a hybrid so it actually has an E-CVT which is MUCH simpler and more reliable than even the Toyota CVT.
No valve bodies, no torque converter , no belts. It's all done with planetary gear set up
"The car care nut" is a toyota mechanic with really great in depth videos about how the eCVT works
Ecvt is arguably more reliable than many automatics and even on the level of a manual at times
EV Mode is great for all those things
Oh...and I also while the RAV4 is idling in EV Mode I will turn on the Sat-Radio then 'Pause it'.
Can you get the SUV up to speed (say 30mph) and hold the speed in ev mode on a flat surface for a few miles?
I too figure my own mpg on my Rav4. It is never as good as the readout on the car says it is.
