ABOUT
The journey making this documentary started with our director and cinematographer Jan Lim's idea of capturing the local Subaru car clubs in Southern California. The project quickly grew as he learned about the culture and met more people. He found himself traveling to Japan and across the United States with his fiancée, dogs, cousin AJ, and friends in the film industry. Jan had to start curating the stories to encompass a massive culture into one dissectible art form. There were numerous struggles throughout the self funded project. Jan had to prioritize this documentary over his production jobs while self investing it back through travel and gear to capture these stories. After over a year of filming it was time for post production. This is when Jan needed the most help and could not afford a post production team. Companies that said would financially help ended up backing out and Jan even turned down a deal to hand over what he had already filmed to a production company that said they would have edited it. After launching a unsuccessful kickstarter campaign, Jan was at a stand still with the documentary until his friend Jose Valdez devoted the next year to filming, editing, and help push this film to it's final stages. They then combined their time, energy and talents to bring this film to life. If it weren't for the the people involved in the film, the conversations and discussion with one another, the patience and support of family around us, the tears and pain of pushing forward everyday on this project, we would have not grown as individuals and have the chance to share this full feature independent documentary with you.
----
"Between The Lines" is greater than just a car documentary. It is the belief that there is more than what is seen on the surface level. It is the everyday struggle that we all live through and how we can turn that around into something greater. It is the belief we have within ourselves that we can do anything we set our minds to and make a difference to those around us. We have to believe in ourselves to the point where nothing will stop us from our dreams despite all of the physical, mental, monetary, and external forces. As we navigate through this one chance on Earth, keep in mind that there is more to life when you look "Between The Lines".
This documentary is a testament to that belief.
Cheers,
Between The Lines Family

This documentary changed a lot of things. The world was able to formally recognise how beautiful and globe stretching the Subaru Community really is! Epic.
Im a subaru fan
I have learnt alot from the video.
Share this with the world people. It takes a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears to make something like this happen.
I appreciate the kind words and support my dude. It definitely took a lot of passion.
I own an evo but it didn’t stop me from appreciating this film and respecting the subie culture.
Mad love to Evos. Tell the Evo community to fast forward to 14:25 =P
Juan Camacho Yeah bro its a rivalry for sure but not a hate driven one.
A few took it over the line. Both cars should be respected for even being produced in the first place.
Same //evo x
The evo it self has been a part of the subbie culture since day 1. Old sti's have something the new ones will never have, a friendly rival...
Listed my Subaru for sale a week ago. After watching this documentary it’s no longer up for sale it made me realise how amazing this lifestyle is and the people I’ve met along the way have made it all worth it.
Thank you!
Sometimes we need reminders in life. LOL =)
Nothing Is Something absolutely, this has been it!
Bro same thing but I sold mine and bought a evo x
@@nathanellis4122 if you have a Hawk Eye you better keep it. Prestine ones hold their value well.
Bro, if you’re in debt and need to sell, get rid of the fuckin thing, it’s not worth being financially stressed. Sold mine years ago and now just got two years left to pay off my mortgage.
As "The Family Man" in this movie, I hope that it will inspire others to go to their local blood bank and donate either platelets (as I do) or blood to help safe the life of someone you will never know. I am so lucky to know Jan and Jose who made this movie as well as the others who are part of this documentary that explains the love we all have for each other and for Subaru cars and the Subaru community.
I have a rare blood type so, I donate often. They actually contact me and ask meet to come in when they start running low. As for the documentary, I didn't realize that Subarus had such a cult following. At work, I see hundreds of Subarus every day. I never really think about the fact that each one will be going to a person who will LOVE it for years to come
John Mccalister I applaud your helping out so many with a rare blood type. I'm A- which is somewhat rare. When I got my WRX I was so surprised to get the peace sign flashed to me. But it is the way for the owners to acknowledge their love of this car I feel like I am part of a big family
Stephen Mirkin It kinda freaked me out too. I got mine through our employee lease program and my wife and I drove it from Indiana to California and back. I really only got the deuces in California but, that was the only place nice enough to drive with the windows down
I have not been outside of California with my WRX, but assume they would give you the same "peace sign" when they encounter your Subie. But, WRX's are sold the most in California.
Stephen Mirkin Well, as you can probably imagine, all models of Subaru are quite common in Lafayette Indiana. They almost seem to grow on trees here just because of SIA and the sheer number of people who work there. I don't see any peace signs here because so many people have them. It isn't so much an exclusive club like everywhere else
Humbled to be apart of this production. Thank you Jan and Jose.
Thank you for inspiring so many people NVRHOME
Nvrhome _ dude is that your shop on Firestone in downey that's close to the portos?
Im that 9-5 joe you described, wish i can live more like you lol.
I saw your Buddhist Bootcamp sticker- Timber is a really good friend of mine he pretty much saved my life when I was homeless.
I also used to mountain bike most of my life and a bad snowboarding accident changed all of that. My hips are really bad so now I also turn to cars more and am a huge Subaru fan.
Cheers buddy I also live in SoCal now if you ever want to hang out shoot me a message!
PS. I made most of Timbers stickers for a number of years 😉
Jan and Jose, we could not thank you enough for the privilege to be a part of your documentary!!
In a time where the automotive enthusiast industry is under attack in California specifically, we all could use a voice that reflects on what’s on the other side of the coin, and your movie as a whole did that!
You guys and your crew did an amazing job at not just getting you voice and word out, but as well as THE COMMUNITY’s voice over all!!
People forget what and why we do this through all the hype, but it’s a refreshing take to see your humble voice be heard!
From Corporate to Motorsports, to Lifestyle to personal! Subaru means to UNITE, and you did that effectively in this video!
From our heart to yours, we thank you for your hard work! Now sit back, and take a load off, your home now!
Cheers my brothers!🍻
Cheers to everyone that understands the craziness behind what and why we do what we do, and love what we do!
We are all an #AwdsomeFamily 🙏
Thank you AWDsome Lifestyle for your expression and feedback. This is great. Now we are able to talk about social issues that are currently happening in the car culture and California. Actually we are talking about several cultural issues in this doc. Let's educate, create awareness, and fix the issues that have been around the car culture. Your voice is now being heard world wide. Let's continue to be that change. LOL Much love. Cheers!
This documentary has honestly changed my life. Single handedly one of the best documentaries I have ever watched.
This was a great documentary. I have owned 2 Subaru's so far and the community is one of the best I've ever come across. To have it documented like this and in so many ways and experiences is incredible. Great piece of work.
This documentary is the best thing I've seen.....really touched my heart and made me love my Subaru sti even more then I already do.... excellent job!!!
Can’t believe I just came across this. A quality production that deserves so much more support and views
Excellent film. So sorry about your pal. They really are special creatures. They are so loving you can’t help but treat them like family.
I really enjoyed the way you worded that. Thank you.
Nothing Is Something 🙏
Just became a Subaru owner for the first time. Back in 04 as a freshman in high school I’ve always dreamed of owning this. Now being 35 years young I finally bought my first 2021 STI. Amazing documentary
I'm an evo owner and diehard enthusiast of my Lancers...but this was beautiful to watch 🥺 i didn't want it to end
This is a beautiful video! Not just the Subarus, but the humanistic stories are just inspiring. Plus, your story about Sofi really touches me. As a dog person and a Subaru guy, I can relate to you 100%. Massive respect or you and your work! Absolutely Fine Documentary!
GO SUBARU!!!
Much love and respect to you as well.
Proud Baja owner here and I still crack a smile on the rare occasion I see another one.
Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this Documentary ! Love the film and the Subaru culture. Sorry to hear about Sophie brother. ✌🏽
I appreciate the shout out to the team! Everyone that worked on it was a dear friend or family member. Thank you for the kind words.
I love this big family! Thank you very much for this film!
Ok who was cutting the onions at the ending about Sofi? Ok I’m not going to lie, that was a touching end. Loved this Doc.
the best part of the doc to me, the story with your Sofi because i have a Belgian Malinois that looks so much like her..
You are all your Belgian Malinois has, love him/her with all your heart.
Thanks for sending me the link to this Jan. I thought it was odd some dude pointing a camera at me as I drove past and smiling, but big props to you guys for this video. Really well done, and caught the community vibe spot on.
Great cruising with you Jason! Thanks for watching, hope we cross paths again and can chat. Nice ride!
That was an amazing moment we had in AZ!!
Never thought I'd be giving a heartfelt thank you to a dog I've never met. Thank you to Jan, Sofe and everyone who helped make this documentary whole and a reality.
This was phenomenal!
Loved it!!!! Almost cried at the end though not going to lie! RIP Soph...
Haha! Let it out next time. Much love.
@@NothingIsSomething as soon as i heard cancer i started weaping. i just went thru this and this pain doesnt get any better. Good luck friend.
I definitely cried at the end, as a lover of dogs and of Subarus. I can relate to how our canine friends help us cope through some really rough stuff. It is pure love from our dog friends to us; it is unconditional and steadfast.
You thought this was a Subaru documentary, but jokes on you it was actually about a dog.
such an awesome doc was honored to have my (blood and car) #mtnroo family and I be a part of your vision, you guys are amazing!!!!!!!!
Although I'm a fan of "Evolution", but Subaru 22b I can not help but love. Great movie, I hope it will be shown more than just on Speedhunters
Amazing! We are already breaking barriers. We are car people and think Evos are absolutely amazing cars too. We hope so too. S/O Speedhunters!
Excellent film
from Thailand Subie fan.
This is just beautiful. Incredible the a lots of people from different places can have the same passion about cars and life RIP sofi
Wow what an Amazing Story, loved watching every minute of this, RIP SOFI 😪
Very heartfelt finale! I too lost my dog from kidney cancer, it's a very painful and devastating event in life that I wouldn't wish on anyone. It's such a major inspiration to see Jan turn this into something positive that a whole community can benefit from.
I hope this film can be a starting point to bring light to the car community and touch the lives of everyone else who aren't in the car community. I am sorry to hear the news. Life is so precious and we see death until it is us one day. Live life! Sending you and your best friend positive energy.
'all of our cars have a boxer engine ... everything except for BRZ' - what?
No turbo.
No AWD.
Still has a boxer, last I checked...
Steve H Probably a bad edit. Probably said all our cars are awd except brz.
Steve H x. BRZ. Actually stands for....wait for it....Boxer Rear Zenith lol
yea i caught that too. bad edit. probably said all of our cars have boxer engine and all wheel drive except brz since he goes to talk about awd.
Hi Steve, thanks for bring that to our attention. We apologize for that. The special case is was a reference to AWD and we tried to cut it with what we had. Sorry if this has caused any misrepresentation.
Way to own up. That was the only flaw I saw in the edit! Nice work!
I see great potential in this movie. The team did a fantastic job in making a movie about not only cars but family. I can't wait to see this movie in bigger theatres and produced on Blu-ray Disc! Good luck to all!
Always better! We just need some support to make part 2. LOL
I can't wait for the sequel! Just as a suggestion I think you should also feature some more cars in part 2 like Honda, Toyota, Mazda, BMW, Porsche, Ford, Volvo, Holden, etc. Cheers!
A big thanks from France for this awesome documentary !
I'm really proud to be a part of this community.
Shout out to France! We love your country. I hope we can touch base when we make part 2. We shall see! =)
I hope so too ! It will be an honor to be part of it ;)
ALNSM OVERLAND
Cheers from Switzerland!
On the way back from Normandie,I met on a lone reststop south of Paris the exact same s-turbo as I had (snif) and a memorable conversation ensued at 4 in the morning with a lovely couple.
And thanks for the documentary! Well made!
Congratulations on making this documentary. Sorry for your loss. Great job!
I loved this. I don't own a Subaru but have in the past. I would say for the Director that he should have said what he did about Sofi in the beginning and then showed her throughout the film and then dropped the bomb about 9/10ths of the way through and then finished off on a positive note. I am sitting here with something in my eye.....I'm not crying you're crying!!!
Love the feedback, this is the second time we've heard this. The documentary was shot organically and the director Jan's story just came about towards the last half of the film. Sofi wasn't with us anymore during the packing gear scene was shot and where trying to bridge a time gap. Great, great feedback though. HAHA let it out, it's okay to show our feelings. Thank you and talk soon.
How could anyone dislike this. True human connection in so many ways
Wow! you guys did an amazing job! this film really grabs your emotions and keeps you engaged the whole time! Already one of my favorite documentaries, and very inspiring!
I'm not crying,, you're crying!
This is amazing man! Tearing up at 3:00am. Subie family really different.
"family" 🤣
Aro Rakotoarivony. Corny fuck
Starting 2020 cutting onions. As someone that works at a Subaru dealership and its on his second Subaru. This was a beautiful documentary. My first Subaru (04 WRX) brought me into car culture. Within the first month someone drove by and wave at me. That's when i realize i was now part of an awesome family. Thanks for sharing all this beautiful stories and sharing the love for Subaru's.
Brilliant documentary, really emotional at the end. Wow powerful in many ways.
what a documentary about how diverse the Subaru community is and how what we do and how we do things brings us all together. love it
Respect from Germany for that work. A very interesting view into Americas Subi Family. I feel familar with lots of things you say and I also love this feeling of meeting a brother when you coincidentally meet a STi-driver you didn't knew before.
Subaru is Love.
Hello Germany!! Thanks for reaching out. It's great that you have similar feelings with lots of the things in the film. I think this is because we share what LOVE is. It doesn't matter where we live or what language we speak, LOVE is universal. Please spread the love in Germany for us. We hope to visit in the future! Keep in touch.
Thank you so much for sharing you're pain about Sofi💙❤🏴, its broke my heart to hear of such an, unfair loss of life. As a 11yr veteran of being an STi world family member, I thank you from the heart for creating and expressing to the world, that being a Subaru owner is far more than an automobile....#subarulife, #staysafe🙏
Nice documentary film dude! Appreciate the hard work and keeping the Subaru community together. what makes a Subaru a Subaru. Keep up the work bro!
Absolutely the best thing I’ve ever watched
Honestly, speechless. Thank you so much for the love Zack.
Really awesome documentary. I'm glad I ran into watching this. RIP Sofi.
"Staying curious about the world is a responsibility as an adult...it's how we shape the future."
Something we all should be striving for in our life.
Excellent documentary! Didn't even know this existed! I just got by subie back after a year of modding and upgrades...This video hits me right in the feels HARD!
I miss living in simi valley because of how close and in the middle of car culture LA is but this movie helped me to realize that it doesn't matter how in the middle you are or aren't these people are everywhere and I probably don't have to go far to experience the love awesomeness and companionship that these people that make up the community provide I'm sure it's closer then I think but I don't like being judged I like being happy and content so I tend to stay off social media like face book and instagram and unfortunately these days those are pretty important networking tools to meet lots of cool people but I wish sometimes I had more then an awesome video to share these feelings with people although it is good to know that there are good genuine people out there that are in it for all the right reasons and that is worth sharing and being happy about, not look at me I got this and that even though that can be cool as long as your a hard worker but I'm more about the underlying facts of why we all love Subaru's and cars in general which for me is the community cause whenever I see or talk to someone with the same love it's like we know each other instantly and get each other that's what's great! Sorry for rambling on Jan this movie just go me so excited and happy and sad at the same time I am sending my thoughts and prayers towards Sophie and you and your family thanks so much for sharing your and other awesome people's experience those were great interviews !
Hi Dillan, Don't be sorry for rambling, I like hearing people's thoughts and it helps me understand how beautifully different each and every single one of us are. You just said it right there... No one likes to be judge and that shouldn't be the reason why people cant come together to enjoy culture. I mean that is basically bullying. That's also a cultural issue that needs some attention and help. We start by car talk but by the end of it we are talking about feelings. This is a common thread of every single human being. I am rambling back now too HAHA. Thank you for the blessings and much love to you and the family.
Great doc! Happy to be part of the Subaru community. RIP Sofi.
As soon as I saw Engineering Explained, I knew this was going to be a banger of a documentary. Owned my '13 STI since 2016. The previous owner was an late 50's gentleman who got out of the seat of my car and into the seat of a brand new 2017 STI. We're still in touch, and he sends me a Christmas card every year. Everyone needs something or someone that makes them turn around and do a double-take every day. I've found that in my Subie, and I can only hope that others find something as precious to themselves as well.
Hey David! Thanks for sharing your story. It is very similar to mine too! I got the 07 STI from a single owner, older gentleman, and bone stock. We're also in touch. Just last week he mailed me the spare valet key. LOL. Hope all is well on your end.
One word describes this video best..... beautiful
Beautiful!!!. Proud to see extended Subie family. MTNROO!! 👍🏾👍🏾
Great documentary. It really stirred some emotions in me. It has motivated me to want to do more activities and visit more places.
Thank you! So glad it has motivated you. More life!
Absolutely stellar documentary. Well done.
Great job! Loving seeing how big and awesome the Subaru family is.
First time Subaru owner here ('04 Forester XT) and father of an Argentinian Mastiff Pitbull Mix.
My Bella is the absolute love of my life and she also LOVES my car!
My buddy showed me this documentary and it's one of, if not the best, documentaries on RUclips. The ending made me cry because my dog is literally the love of my life and the only thing I need to make me happy!
Thank you for this and your inspiring message.
Very inspiring, thank you very much for your great work to show our love
What an amazing film!! And then you hit me with Sofi :( As an STi and german shepherd owner, you hit me right in the feels.
Much love and respect,
Diego&Maximus
Love that you signed with your dog's name! You're amazing!
Touched my soul at the end as I had A similar story with my dog passing away ,good job on filming this documentary !
Sending good energy.
Sorry for your loss.
Thank you very very much for such a wonderful documentary.
Love every part of it and even shed a tear at the end.
Great job my friend.
-Regards from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
the dislikes on this film are probably EVO owners.
I would hope the "loyal opposition" would respect the following Subie owners have.
or non hippys
Haters gonna hate
also people like to dislike for no reason
Evo x here, I always wave to wrx and sti when im driving. Just because we're rivals doesnt mean we dont have the same passion and love for cars.
so glad that this was recommended to me after so many years, what a work of art
Amazing Amazing, simply Amazing!
I love Subaru. I love being part of the Subaru, Cars and Motorsports families.
Great work Jan and Jose, great work!
Absolutely loved this documentary, I genuinely wish we had the same kind of Subaru community here in the UK, sending the scoob wave, from a GT SpecB. Never felt this proud to own one.
Awesome movie!!... You guys did absolutely grand. Thanks for all the emotions. I am extremely enlightened and thankful to be part of the SubiFam. Sophie will always be.
R. Sean Griffith as do us all.
Amazing documentary, thank you so much for finding, making and sharing these stories!! Car culture brings together an amazing group of people and I'm so happy to be a part of this worldwide family. Peace!
The amazing part was the chain reaction of meeting people that led me to the next story! Much love!
Subie Gang Subie Gang Subie Gang
This was great. When people ask me why I support this brand the way I do, this film is a great summation of why.
Thank you for making this fantastic documentary, will be sharing with friends and my Subaru customers!
Seriously one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. You were able to bring out all of my emotions. Great job!!
I'm so humbled to hear that. I appreciate it. Much love.
Awesome doc guys so glad to be a part of this amazing community.
Perfect documentary about subaru passion motivation and family!Thank you for this film!
You guys did amazing!! I love how you covered so many aspects of the Subaru lifestyle! Love y'all!! Now let's hit some dirt!! #mtnroo
Nykky Robinson Sunday
I've been waiting for a few days to get a decent wifi connection and my full attention. Unfortunately I have been working long hours, swapping motors and doing side hustle to get and keep my "race subies" on the track/dirt. I am looking forward to watching this! According to the comments, it should be good! Thank you for the time and effort for this piece of work. I haven't even seen the preview.... hahaha
HAHA hopefully you got to watching it by now. Cheers!
I did! My GF cried near the end! its your fault, ahahahaha! I Thought it was great! I loved the rally stuff.
I've been waiting for this for such a long time...
Wonderful! Thank you for making this documentary!
Nicely done.
Woah! Thanks sir. Nice channel you got there.
So much emotion in this documentary. I can’t tell you how many laughs, grins, tears and just gut wrenching moments I felt. I’ve always had a love for Subaru and next year I’m hoping to get my first Subaru on my birthday.
Love. It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru❤️
Happy early birthday!
Amazing documentary! Rest easy sofi
How does this not have more views. You must've put in a lot of effort to document all the different enthusiasts around the world. Great job!
Great job Jan. Amazing work and great times. See you when you're back in NY. No tickets this time!
Haha yes no more tickets next time. That was epic though!
Im 21 now and iv always had a border line addiction to Subaru since 8. Not only for the low roar but for the communities. Still struggling to get my hands on a WRX but will soon!!!
Be patient it’s worth waiting for.
aj Palomer doing my best! Just a little impatient but it will happen soon
Definitely worth it, the community makes it so much better and having a fast car makes it better.
Callsign Lykos work hard and you'll get it bro, I've been in love with them since I saw my very first 22B in person, I'm 25 now and finally got my STi, the harder you work the more you appreciate it, I'm rooting for you bud!
Amazing! Ending brought me to tears.
I was watching this at work and it was hard to hold it back!
so dope !!!. hope you do another one. Rip Sofi
It's been a discussion the team has talked about! =P
Incredible work, all dogs go to heaven
If only subaru cars are affordable in my country. Would love to own one. My childhood dream to own one.
Our team is aware of the cost issue in other countries. We will mediate on this.
Had chills the entire time! Great film!!!
Watched it in its entirety. Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey. Wish you, your family and Sofi’s legacy well.
Extremely well put together, thorough and quite entertaining. Appreciate it.
Wow what an amazing production!!! I live all the way in Trinidad (Caribbean) and have been selling Subaru’s for the last 15 years. I eat sleep, breath and even dream about the Subaru brand and completely endorse everything it stands for! I also have two dogs, they may be Cocker Spaniels but one’s name is also Sophie and the other Skyler so of course I got really emotional towards the end myself! To everyone who contributed to this film, the equivalent of the Medal of Honor should be bestowed onto you!!! I forwarded this to EVERY ONE OF MY SUBARU CUSTOMERS and family and friends in Trinidad and Tobago after seeing it and I’m sure they would also be touched by this film! I’m so happy to share the LOVE...keep up the amazing work and I’m certain that many blessings and smiles will follow!
Beautiful work on this
Rallycross is basically Supermoto on 4 wheels and I love it for that reason.
Brilliant documentary. Thank you so much for this.
Great film ! Totally enjoyed it :D Big respect to the Subaru family ...... Worldwide ;)
If you have not owned a Subaru or lost a good dog - one can not explain either .Great video and well worth watching .Owning Impreza 1996 and now Legacy 2000 it is something one needs to ponder over and feel the family of the Pegasus star arrangement - even my two sons gives me heads up when other Subaru's are around on the road .The ending was very sad - training german shepherds myself I know the attachment and feel the pain .RIP Sophi
Thank you bradlington kirsten1 for taking the time to watch the film and sharing a little bit about yourself. It is definitely something special. I hope all is well during this time with the family, dogs, and cars.
Amazing documentary! 👌 RIP Sofi 🐶
Great documentary! I love that you completely captured the Subaru culture and the Family that Subaru represents. Subaru Love
No word, juste incredible
Great documentary!! Much respect for this video and the Subaru community👍🏼
