    I cannot believe how easy you made that front 9 look, All my group agree that the course is very tough, and that the course only starts to get easier from the 10th onwards. The flag on 5 was at the back of the green, so it plays much much tougher as anything that does not get to the back of the green runs all the way to the front and you have a 60' uphill putt left. Greens were very quick (though not as quick or in as good nick as the Rolls of Monmouth). £25 is very good value though and the views are stunning. Looking forward to part 2.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  3 года назад +1

      It didn't feel easy. There was a lot of bad shots in that 9. The greens were medium pace, it was obvious they were protecting them against burning. Which is what a good greenkeeper does. I agree 5 is a very long green and i had a friendly flag, they were all friendly. I got it round to my handicap on the front. ALmost died walking up 8 though! 😂😂😂 Thanks Darren.

      Hi Denis. Tips for distance. Well I can't hit it hard anymore so I try to hit it with some decent timing and the best for that is the age old 7 iron feet together half a swing drill. That gets the acceleration of the swing in the right place - at the ball. That makes up half of my practice. I get away with an ugly swing because of that drill. Cheers

    That looks a touch brutal Simon!! Having set us up in your introduction with how difficult the 1st is, what a fabulous drive you hit to make it look simple!!!! And as for that bunker shot on 6, Wow!!!! A truly classy recovery to reach the green there! +3 is a good score in the conditions and given all of those hills, but the view of that 7th tee was truly outstanding (worth the walk?). Definitely a hidden gem and another great course vlog!!!

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  3 года назад +1

      What I remember about the 1st was hitting it in the bunker and screwing up the hole. I just managed to turn over the 1st enough to avoid that and the trees. It needs a bit of a hook to find the fairway. I can only hook when I want a fade.......
      That footprint on 6, I hit that like an 80 yard shot and it just trickled onto the green. That was a flat out swing for 15 yards. 7 was really nice, I could have sat there a long time just looking at the view. 8 was the killer, I was done in. The only shot I wish I had hit better was the 9th tee shot. Get it closer to the trees on the left and then fire a short iron into the green. They were really soft if you hit them on the fly.
      It was worth the walk.

      @thehairygolfer  3 года назад

      Hi Jeff, great views there. Nice to stop a moment and just drink it in.
      The bunker shot was a full sand iron that popped out about 5 yards and trickled the rest. Not sure there was a huge amount of skill in that! I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Sadly at my own club there are still people who are afraid to hold a rake.
      MP 53's are the dogs bollocks. Great irons. Sound on the driver is very important, out of the meat it sounds good, not so much out of the heel. I tried another driver and it just sounded cheap and nasty. The sound changes with the swing speed, it sounds good when Rory hits it but a bit crap when I hit it with my 98mph. Enough said.

    I remember summer :D This must have been filmed in late July? At the start of my summer holiday I was getting to the course very early to be finished before midday because it was so hot. I've been looking at this course for a trip for about a year along with Monmouth, Monmouthshire and West Monmouthshire golf clubs. But even from Chepstow Woodlake park is a bit of a pain to get too and there is no direct routes. That par 3 view was stunning by the way. Any idea if it drains well in the winter? I'm looking for good draining courses in winter because my home course (The Bells) doesn't drain well.

      Hi Gary, it was late July and it was bloody hot. Going up that 8th almost killed me! From Chepstow I guess you go up the M4 to Newport and hang a right for Usk.
      I'm playing the 3 courses you mention quite soon and probably Pontypool as well, I've got some leave to use up. Don't know about the drainage at Woodlake but looking at the contours I'll stick my neck out and say it's better than The Bells. But it wouldn't be hard to be better than The Bells tbh.

    Well played, not sure of your h/c but +3 is good, I am a member at Woodlake and I would like to think that it wasn't any of the members "up your chuff" but as you say buggies are popular with society's and they rattle along #2 is a hard hole as you can't see if anyone is on the green, as for the raking of bunkers it's a pain, we try to encourage people to take responsibility for raking them but the few will always do their own thing. However it's a beautiful place to play golf, greens are the best in the area better than some more "prestigious" tracks, a tough test especially in the heat you were playing in and the baked hard fairways, but, as I said 3 over is very good scoring... onwards to part 2😁

      I love Woodlake and I have no idea why I don't go more often. I'm always happy to let people through. When I got to the 9th I was so happy to sit down for 10 minutes. I over reacted on 2, my fault entirely for being a bit slow with the camera. They did surprise me though. As to 16 I found that odd. Shouting fore at someone on the green.
      Bunkers everywhere get neglected. You should see the Rolls of Monmouth, hard pan and no sand.
      I'm back in september. Was it 3 over? I can't remember. Yellow tees are always more generous. Wasn't I 3 over the front and 2 or 3 over the back? It was somewhere round my handicap. With 5 par 5's I always have a decent chance of shooting my handicap. Of course it counts for nothing, as you know it's playing the backs with a card in your hand that tells the truth. Cheers
