You literally make the best tutorial videos for car audio on RUclips !!
Thanks man !!
I have the first style back up camera. Your method helps me a lot without having to mess around with connection to the reverse light wire. Never thought of it, but It really make my installation a lot easier.
Thanks so much for this video. It gave good insight to the differences of getting power to the camera and how just tapping off a reverse light to power a camera may not allow you to use all the features of your head unit. I was happy how my install went, but I would have been happier if I lived in central FL and could have paid you to do the install! Be well and thanks for being great teachers!
I appreciate your videos thank you. I have the first camera and was at a loss. Thanks to you I'll finish buttoning everything up in the morning.
I have looked at least 20 videos and this is the 1st one that actually explained it thoroughly and in a way that's understandable... thank you very much!!
+BrianAmo BuiltSierra cool, thank you
Thank you !!! They did not have the red connector in my kit. You are the first to explain and do it in a video. You made it super easy
Cornelieus Fields glad we could help
Thank you so much. Its taken me 3 weeks and loads of fuses... then i found this . . Brilliant
You are a freaking genius, made it so easy for my new radio and camera. Yes this still works in 2019 at least for type 1 in my case!
thank you very much. I have style one & been going crazy trying to get the reverse function working.
Very good explanation... the purple wire is the one who was messing with me, but this video makes it clear and bright. Just add a separate wire on the reverse light to the purple wire...“makes a lot of sense”.
Thanks
My unit is a sony xav-ax200
This video is exactly what I've been looking for. Had such a hard time figuring out the reverse light tap vs the power wire connected to the video in style 1. Thank you!
benjamin lancaster cool glad we could help.
Finally!! Someone explains clearly and correctly. My head was spinning and camera non functional until I saw this. Subscribed
That final 30 seconds is what I’ve been waiting to hear for a while ,
I honestly thought you needed to tap the reverse light wire to make the thing turn on,
Thank you
Haha, thanks for the video, 7 yrs later its still useful, I am wiring style 1 and now understand why the reverse wire is separate from the red/black wires. Love the ending too! Cheers from Australia 😅
Hi guys, just wanted to say thanks as I have watched several of your videos and they have really helped me out with my installation. I went from having a stock stereo in my 2011 Tundra to installing the AVH 280bt with an aftermarket camera. This was a challenge for me as I had never installed a stereo, but your videos allowed me to get up to speed.
Sweet glad we could help. Thanks enjoy!
I'd like to second that and show my appreciation. I'm about to do a camera/head unit install in my girlfriend's 2013 Impreza and have been prepping using this channel. Thanks guys for sharing knowledge and know-how with us.
This explained things so much better than a lot of other videos thank you
My first time jumping into this head unit and camera install. I bought the style 1 with pioneer avh1550nex. I actually wanted the pioneer c8 camera which was $129cad and my shop suggested the $50 generic will suffice. I followed a corolla install by Quality Mobile video for my corolla and ran 18awg primary wire down the camera wire, along with a 6ft ground 18g and short wire from camera. Finished it off with tesa tape all the way down and installed the camera. Took extra time to place it because i started at the trunk. I will be installing the head unit on Monday with a buddy. Already tested the camera and hu with M12 battery it’s functional. Thanks for the informative video
Oh and the red lead to reverse light everything with insulated connectors
This video was clear and concise. Answered all my questions. Dean rocks!
I was wondering about the reverse trigger, you cleared that up. Thanks.
Trigger= switch ( I know little confusing.)
Isn't the purple wire still tapping into the reverse light for power same as the red trigger wire would? Or is there somewhere else you would attach the purple on the reverse light assembly.?
Thanks boss. Your videos come in clutch for the average joe who wants to diy
Thanks for all the info! I really enjoy your channel, you guys explain everything very well.
Nice job at explaining everything in detail how each camera setup works pretty simple but I understand people don't get it thanks great video
This was extremely helpful! Thank you for posting!
Getting ready to install a backup camera in my 2002 Sequoia. Thanks for the tip! Cheers, bob
I thought I was so cool tapping the reverse light for the red wire when I installed mine a couple weeks ago, and now I feel like an utter fool. :) Will switch it out soon, so I can actually see out the camera when I'm not in reverse. Thanks for this video!!
Well, I take it back. The Autovox Cam1 HD that I bought is made to specifically only power on with the reverse lights, because it has an ambient sensor and six bright LEDs that would be constantly blinding other drivers at night if it were always on. Oh well, at least I'll wire my next camera the way this video shows, if it has infrared lights / works the way the ones in your video do.
@@CaseyFriday Put tape on all the LEDS but two.. Problem Solved. As people want to see behind them, While Driving..
What happened then did the camera work?
Great video...answered some questions for me. Installing a camera into a 2000 Nissan Xterra. I was going to connect to the power to the reverse light. Going to try your way instead.
thankyou somuch for posting this helpful video.it gave me not only a different way to hook it up & not having to use the back lights to do so but the 3 different styles or choices in back carmers in the market today.
George rosado thank you for watching
You rock! Thanks for the understanding enough to get the job done! Was stymied wondering about that backup power question.
Excellent job explaining reverse trigger wire, had me so confused and is so simple!
Thanks for the tip about the variations of rear view cameras and its wiring Dean. 👍
So I have the "Type 1" type of setup. I tapped into the red wire on the back of the stereo with the red wire coming out of the yellow input on one side. I tested everything out and it worked fine (without the Reverse part since I was tapping that into the brake lights later). So I unhooked the camera and tapped into the purple/white wire from the stereo with a 16 gauge wire I bought from the hardware store. I then started fishing the 2 wires (input line and 16 gauge) through my 2009 Chevrolet Colorado cab and under the bed of the truck to the brake light. I mounted the camera and hooked everything back up. Through my research, I was informed that the bright green light behind the brake light was the one I needed to tap my 16 gauge line into. So everything was hooked up as it was before when it worked for me, minus the 16 gauge line that went from the purple/white wire, to the bright green wire behind the brake light. I turned the car on and I used my pioneer stereo to realize that nothing was popping up on the screen. It's just black. I messed with the camera settings, but it's mostly an on/off option. Any clue as to what I did wrong? It's been disheartening after 3 hours of extremely un-fun work to come up short. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks for helping me out. I really do appreciate your videos
+Saman Haaji thank you
Thank you sooo much. This helped me understand about the Reverse trigger and the power wiring. 👍🏾👍🏾
Awesome video. Great tip about not powering the cameras from the radio reverse trigger wire.
I have a question, I have a camera like the first one you showed in your video, but with 4 bright LED's in it as well. when I hook it up like you said, wouldn't the LED's be on constantly? Because if I am right, the cables are attached to the radio, so if the radio is on, the LED's will be on as well, right? I think that's the reason people would want the camera attached to the reverse light wires in stead of the radio, so only when the reverse light is activated, the camera and LED's would light up.
ABSOLUTE LIFE SAVER!!
I've just bought myself a golf mk5 with an aftermarket reverse camera on it (style 1) and it kept flickering or sometimes not even turning on at all. I'm going to go home today and wire that red wire up from the back of the head unit and pray to god it works!
+Adam Pearcey let us know how it goes
Unfortunately it didn't work... Apparently VW golf's produce over 14 volts when the engine is on, which the camera doesn't seem to like. I've been told I need a relay or a voltage step down... :( I don't wanna have to mess about with all this crap!
+Adam Pearcey so does the camera work it just has noise?
Yeah when the ignition is on and not the engine the picture is crystal clear, the moment I turn my engine on it starts flickering like mad.
Thanks man, this video was very helpful. Finally had my ah hah moment about the trigger wire basically being like a remote wire for an amp.
Thank you so much! I was concerned primarily about the reverse trigger. This helped a ton!
The_Plane_Geek very cool, thank you for watching
At last, someone who explained what the reverse sensor lead is for and how to wire it up. Many thanks.
Just a thought, if you have leds and dont want them on all the time, connect both the red power from the camera and the red lead to the reversing lights positive terminal, the black to ground, then the red lead at the head unit end to the reverse sensor lead.
Connect both yellow rca's.
That should only turn the camara on in reverse.
Thanks for the video! It was very useful for my first time installing a camera.
I have an mp5 stereo that came w a camera installed in a 13 GMC Sierra and the reverse light went out and camera didn’t work. I ran a separate power wire to the stereo ground it in the back , then ran a wire from the pink backup to the reverse wire I have power to the camera but it is not triggering the reverse and now the light on reverse is out . What do I do now
I went through 4 videos to tell me what the small "signal" wire was. Yours was very helpfull. We always dont get the greatest chinese directions.Lol
I have literally watched 30-40 videos about wiring my back up camera after my new in dash came with no instructions. This is the first and ONLY one that made sense and showed me that I wired mine correctly. After watching the others I was afraid I was going to blow up my new head unit! Thank you for your excellent video!
The blooper part of the video is cool! It's like the Cannonball Run movie blooper reel ending!
Never mind you answered my question in another one of your videos lol thanks again
Very clear explanation.
helped me out immensely! Thank you for your time.
Phillip Kalmbach sweet
I just deleted a long question because when I got to the last sentence by slowly typing it out I realized my flawed logic LOL. Thanks for the videos!
thanks I completed learning about the installation with this video :)
Oon Joh sweet!
The best video yet!
Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful
Good stuff - thanks for the info.
I have style 1 and on the camera end I grounded the black wire to chassis and tied the two rods together like you did but then I made a jumper from the hot wire on my reverse lights down to the camera for power then on the back of the head unit I simply plugged in the video rca and tied the red wire to the reverse trigger wire and it works flawlessly
You can run both reds different. One to the light one to the pink wire or purple. That works as well. Thatll save you from running an extra wire. The wire at the reverse light already powers cam up.
Definitely helped, thanks for the great info
To help some people out, just tape your power and ground to the power and ground coming off the reverse light wire, with a T tap. And you can still wire the trigger wire that runs to the back of the head unit to the power to use when not in reverse. That way you can see behind you, and turn on and off manually. While the rear has a power and a ground, like I said connecting it to the reverse light wire. Super simple and easy. Granted the kit I got can with a trigger wire on both sides of the rca jack. And I did have to drill a hole to mount the camera, but it looks really good, factory almost.
This was fantastic. Thank you.
Thank you for teaching us this!!!!
The best video on topic 👍
Just tap it in!! Just tap it in.. :) Give it a little tappy, tap-tap taparoo. Lol.. Another great in depth video, well done. Thanks guys.
You deserve a trophy 👍
Thanks for the videos, fixing to install a back up camera on my vet, it will be a pioneer NDBC8 universal. I hope and I don't set the car on fire.
Thanks so much for simplifying something I've been putting off for a while. But what if you have a type 1 camera and a wireless link back to the head unit?
How does swinging lines work with aftermarket units? I'm thinking about using these: Pioneer AVIC-W8400NEX head unit
and the ACCELE TLOP100IRBL Camera
Awesome video you made things very simple
This was awesome. Thank you.
Awesome details! Thank you!
Thanks for all the videos, very helpful! I'm having a horrible time installing a backup camera. I have a Pioneer AVH-x390bs, I can get a crystal clear image with the car off and with the engine running. The problem is when I start playing music I get interference lines all over the picture. If the deck does anything besides camera only= picture is messed up. Even the little box that pops up to say my phone is connected with bluetooth causes noise in picture, when box goes away- clear image again. I watched your videos to install the pac css12 & to use a relay, neither of those made a difference. I really thought the relay would work, nope!
Great video. Have just wired a factory camera for a Ford F250. Works well, but shuts of with motion. Is there a way to fool the system to remain on with car moving? Thank you. Glenn
Thanks for the video! At 2:10 you connect the sensor wire from the camera to the 12v radio power. This works well unless you have a camera with bright LED lights that come on when the camera is powered. With this wiring method those lights are always on even when not in reverse. How do you recommend wiring in that case?
I have the same camera with the led lights how did you end up wiring it?
@@luie92114 Greetings Luis! I wound up doing what Bo mentioned below...running the power wire over to the reverse light and spliced it right at the reverse bulb.
@@waltstringer7387 and grounded the black wire? that's probably my issue I couldn't get my camera to come on
@@waltstringer7387 thank you so much I did exactly that and it work appreciate it!!
@@waltstringer7387 You can’t do that to higher end cars like my SL55 AMG. The back up lights are LED and won’t provide enough voltage to make the camera work correctly. Also you will get a bulb out warning in the dash because the computer will sense that extra load to the circuit causing dash warning. You have to tap to the fuse or SAM output wire to the back up light module.
Great video, there is a lot of confusion out there on how to power the camera, most people and even the instructions that comes with some cameras ask you to power from the reverse light, In my case I found a good +12V source (my car has a Aux output in the back) and I connected the camera there and used the red tail in the video RCA cable to send the reverse light signal to the radio, because I couldn't find the reverse signal in the dashboard and the center console where the gear stick is was complicated to open, anyway it works fine.
Thanks best video by far
8:44 will this get rid of the noise on the camera when the engines on since it will have constant pwr? I just ordered a PAC noise filter, currently i have pwr from the reverse light.
hi thanks for the great vid.. I have a question though.. I don't mind only having the camera on when the reverse is on. that being said, if my green wire coming of the head unit has a video bypass harness how would I get it to see the reverse signal? do I have to run a wire from the rear of car to the purple and white wire on head unit?
hi I have a style 2 camera basically the same one in the video. My question is everything is hooked up like the video but when I throw it in reverse I don't have the guidelines and the led lights on the camera do not turn on
I noticed the 3 extra wires with the weird tips labeled as led, distance guide and reverse
can you tell me where those connect?
Those buttons are for turning on and off the led's, selecting mirrored or non mirrored, and parking lines. You just push them in like a click style pen to make your selections
2024 and I found this video more relevant and informative than others I was looking at.
Hey there! Thanks for the video, however I’m having a problem. I just got style 1 with my AVH-2440NEX. Wired everything up they way you described in the video. However, I don’t have any video feed coming through. It switched to the backup camera but I’m seeing nothing but the warning text on screen. It’s now dark out and I can’t see a darn thing. Not sure which way to lean on what to check first. Definitely not an electrical guru and I’ve installed stereos before but this is my first camera. Could it possibly be a poor ground? Look forward to your response. Thanks in advance!
Great video, Thanks!
I got one question of my installation of a reverse camera to Pioneer avic-8200nex. For the short red pigtail of RCA cable on the head unit side, which line I should connect to? Red, purple/white, or any other lines? thanks!
I have the same question. Did you ever get an answer?
Thanks for making these vids!
FrostyWorks303 your welcome, thanks for watching
i have that yellow rca cable with the power wire embedded in it can i use that for the reverse trigger and just run the power and ground adapter from the camera off of the power of the reverse hot lead and ground it to the frame of the car ? will that work ?
really helpful video thank you!
Q: I have a eSky license plate camera with LED reverse lights, it’s setup is style 1. I wired everything up as your example and the camera works great; while in reverse or when I press my camera button. However the LED reverse lights stay on, whether in reverse or not. Any help is appreciated.
Btw I excellent videos! I’ve been working on my cars for decades but this is the first time I’ve got into any electrical and wiring. Your videos have been an enormous help!
Enjoy your video and advice. Can we use the backup camera as front parking camera ? Would there be a problem with the mirror effect of the camera is designed for backup? I have seen some out of market cameras which have loop wires to convert it to a front camera
Thank you man, I was looking for information why I am having double parking lines? so you are so right I connected with the reverse wire (purple) that was the reason getting wrong light.
Some cameras have the reverse parking lines built in and if both the display and the camera show them, you get double.
See if there is on option to turn them off on your display.
Question? on my 2001 Tahoe. Pioneer AVH-211 EX. can I pull that reverse trigger from dash somewhere? if so where from? thanks. nice quick tutorial .
i like style 3 for the small connector for running through tight areas. Like the fact if you have a problem you don't have to remove all the wiring to replace the camera. What cameras on the market are Style 3. Having a hard time trying to locate them. What is your opinion on the wireless cameras?
Which of these would I use on a 2013 Ford Escape with a Microsoft Sync system?
Thanks
I just purchased a 2019 Honda Fit EX. While it does come with a backup camera system, the dealer wanted $600 to engage the sound portion. Is there a way to get the sound when an object gets too close like in most systems without having to pay the dealer? Thanks
The Boss backup camera I have is designed to get its power from the reverse light circuit, so it is only on when the car is in reverse. The camera draws very little current. My Boss head unit has a Reverse signal input that connects to the cars reverse signal (via a Metra console unit) so when the car is put in reverse the head unit switches to display the backup camera. There is quite a bit of variation in how these backup cameras interface with the head unit, but in my case the red wire at either end of the video cable is not needed. Cheers.
So as well as the RCA cable you run a reverse trigger wire also to hook up behind the head unit for style 1?
love your vids...quick question. I have my battery mounted in the trunk. Can i just run my red and black wire from the pigtail to the positive and negative battery post then run the violet and white wire to the reverse light positive?
thanks for looking and i know this video is over a year old lolol
I just bought an Esky sensor camera from Amazon. It's a style one. Could you elaborate on this specific camera and it's installation. Thanks
Do you have any advice on a backup cam only intermittently coming up when put into reverse? Red wire going to accessory at HU (spliced in) black grounded at HU (avh4200) with other grounds.(spliced in) Another Wire run from reverse lights 12v to reverse trigger on HU. The camera works and functions fine when I use the camera function on the HU For just viewing the back, but it only intermittently functions when the car is put into reverse. Fuses are fine and the backup lights work. Thanks in advance.
Hey guys, what front/rear camera do you recommend for the 8200NEX unit, the Pioneer BC8, or the Pac UNO 1, a Boyo or any other camera option? Thanks for all of the great info!
Hey there. my camera is made by pyle and it is similar to style 1 came wiih a yellow video cable but it had no red leads coming off of it for the reverse trigger. as of now i did wire it into the reverse light because i didnt know any better but i wonder if i can still add a trigger wire seperate from the yellow rca thanks
I have one of those wacked out backup camera systems... It's the vrbcs300w, which has wireless backup capabilities into the provided monitor, but I want to hardwire it into a pioneer avh-x2700bs unit instead. This backup camera does support both wireless and wired connections. The wiring is different because it's auxiliary style connection opposed to rca (similar to the alpine bulk, but with aux, not rca) and there are no behind the radio inputs. What do you suggest?
So I have a 2019 kia soul. Bought a kenwood dmx905s. I want to have it so I can have the camera on sometimes when not in reverse. Information out there is confusing. I have the cam axxess 6volt converter and it says to hook up to ground accessory, and reverse. Yet another video you said hook the reverse wire to accessory. So I'd have 2 wire running to accessory? How would it know if it is in reverse?
Thanks for all your great videos. Installing a Kenwood 9903 in my 05 Hummer H2. Really need a backup camera. I was wondering if it is possible to wire a reverse trigger to the gear shift or is the rear reverse light my only option. I want to run the wire underneath and through the firewall. Any "style 3" (for ease in installation) cameras available that do not require the modification due to license plate light glare? Make/model?
will thornley we always mod one of our PAC audio tag cameras so the camera is on the bottom. The smart harness required to install the radio should have a reverse wire in it. If no to the light or dash BCM.
Great video, but i have a question. I'm installing on a Tundra should i run power to tail-light or buy 18-22 gauge longer red wire and run to radio? thanks
If you would like to turn on the camera when you are not in reverse, to see behind you, get the red wire and run it back.
LMAO! Love the bloopers, thanks for the laugh. Great info!
Thanks Tim
Hey really great video. Covered all the combos you might come across. The connections are not really my issue. Whats the easiest way to get the cables from the dash to the boot? This is the hard part!
