    About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

I would want that guitar tone on an album. You could lie and tell me it was a $1500 amp head and a $1000 cab and I would believe you from hearing it in the mix. Unrelated: That drum sound was badass.

You mentioned Emissary in a prior video and that's why I decided to try it. I have to thank you for that, as it is the best free plugin I've tried and honestly, I think it's better than nearly all of the paid plugin amp sims I've tried. I'd only put Reaxis ahead and the Mark IV sim in Helix Native equal to Emissary for metal tones.

YES!! You finally covered my favorite VST maker and possibly their best amp of the several they make. Good shit! I'd also recommend checking out Anvil (3 channel tube preamp) and TPA (tube power amp) from them too, Anvil is very nice for lead tones I've found, and blends nicely with Emissary's tonality. Ignite is amazing quality, and all of it being free is ridiculous. Good shit!

I have used the IRs in Reaper using BIAS Amp, Two-Notes wall of sound, and Pulse. No matter what amp sim I use in those plugins the IRs pair up very well. In particular I LOVE the blended 57-Hewitt in the Eagle Has Landed swath. The whole Revv swath is magical.

On a whim, I decided to download the software and give this a try (with different IRs) . In less than a half hour I've got great sounding guitars . I've spent probably 200 hours and 300 dollars on Bias Amp/Fx and never even came close to how good this sounds... for 0 dollars and a 1/2 hour of my time. Hopefully I'll find a use for my Bias stuff beyond a cautionary tale lol.

Have you ever considered doing a tutorial on how to use these sims for livestreams and online jamming (through Skype, Discord etc)? Since it usually goes through the interface, you can't transmit desktopaudio. Option B is running it through PC audio with input lag. I don't know whether it is a niche issue, but I haven't seen a solution anywhere.

Print your effects on to tracks after you dial them in. In Reaper you can apply fx to items as a new take and then turn off the fx. That way if you want to go back and tweak a little more the unprocessed tone will be in a seperate take lane while the fx chain you used will be right back where you left it when you turn the fx back on.

Glenn, did you ever use the LePou plugins? They were free, designed by a French audio engineer I believe, and they were absolutely killer, and not just for free amp sims. They were genuinely great-sounding; better than a lot of commercial plug-ins. I still use them every now and then, particularly the Legion amp. GREAT for metal.

👍These 'demo-songs' are always great! I'd like to hear a completed 'demo-song' with vocals, warts'n'all. Riffs and compositions have potential to become a great finished product. Your 'demo'-guy is f....n' awesome! ♠rock on'

Best metal amp sim by far is Mercuriall Reaxis. Its not free but it can be if you're brave enough. If you like it, buy it. I absolutely love it. I've been meaning to make a video of it.

Emissary is an amazing amp sims. Sounds better than many paid sims. Legion is another incredible free amp sim.

You can also use cab sim IR's with amp sims from multiFX systems, like a Zoom G5n, a NuX G100, or with a Line 6 Helix. I find that the cab sims on anything but an AxeFX or a Kemper to be a little lacking, but the actual distortion sims on a lot of these newer types of pedals and rack devices are still pretty sweet. I use a Zoom G1XOn, and run it through an ART Tube MP/C for some real tube gain, and then use a power amp to run it through a 4x12 cabinet. Also, using the ReaInsert plugin you talked about in a prior video, you can actually 'reamp' the clean guitars through an actual overdrive pedal, like a Joyo vintage od, Behringer TO800, or a legit tube screamer from Ibanez or Maxon. Also, I usually tend to put the gain at 9 o'clock on tube screamer type pedals, and dial the gain on the amp back a smidge.

I’m so glad I subbed to this channel, you bring forth some really useful shit, dude. I love it.
I’m going to try a clean channel on it and see what my pedal does with it, maybe I can take my amp put of the recording process and make life easier for myself.

The amp sim I prefer. It gives an energy and a dynamic feeling, that I don't find in other amp sims.
I always use two guitar sounds, and the main guitar is always with Emissary Pluglin. For the other guitar sound, I use other amp sim to color the sound. The only default of the Emissary is that it's a bit raw, rude sounding. good for energy, but needs to be more wide with an other guitar

I have to know your opinion on rock and metal bassists studying jazz or blues to improve their chops. As well as studying music theory? It seems to help me a lot.

    • @LordBaktor
      @LordBaktor 6 лет назад +23

Learning more music theory and different styles always helps. Expands your mental library, opens your mind, etc. Just don't turn into one of those pedantic assholes that think a song is not good if it doesn't have an obscure chord progression.

It is always good to learn different approaches. I'm classically trained in double bass. When I play bass in metal bands the band mates really respond well to it.
I tend to incorporate things I've learned from classical pieces and liven up the baselines using some of that.
As the person above said, it's good to remember that you don't have to use all the new stuff to feel like what your playing is more worthwhile. As Glenn often says in his videos, trust your ear.
The jazz, blues, classical theory will just expand the range of possibilities you have in the back of your mind.

BassasaurusRex I play in a metal band, a punk band, and a blues band and surprisingly the only one that’s having success is the blues band. Although, it helps me write lines as the parts are much more complex.
