I made a pair of open baffles out of 1 inch thick teakwood, using the F15 drivers. I doubled the teakwood for the base to make it 2 inches thick. I recently raised them 10 inches off the floor using steel shelf brackets in a tripod configuration. It opened up the sound stage even more, that was already massive. The baffles are placed 46 inches from the front wall. Using my decware Zen Triode amp, these speakers totally disappear with most recordings.Everything sounds great, but the midrange and vocals will make you tear up.I forgot to mention i only have about $650. total in material for this project. WHAT A BARGAN !
Any pictures or video of them we could see?
@@jeffreygorey5540 agreed! Can we see these?
Come on Ronnie show us the beasts. Gotta give back
how low they play in bass? o 70Hz?
F15 are listed FS to 50Hz, so in open baffle, where they reach at -6db?
Those Lii Audio drivers are being used in Decware’s Zen Master series costing over 3k. They make the open baffle spkrs for Decware. They have an array of drivers you can purchase , their top of the line is the Silver series. An open baffle with Silver 10 inch costs about US1,300 new China. This company makes quite a few products , box and open baffle. Their top open baffle 2 spkr set up is the Leonidas costing around 3.2k.
Great video. Love the jokes in the mix rather than a plain dry audio review. Totally makes the video entertaining to watch, thank you.
Im having fun because I dont take myself seriously. :-) happy you enjoyed it.
Man, your videos are always a good laugh, but still stuffed with great content and useful info
What's wrong with the audio community? You are knocking the ball out of the park with witty and informative content and you are still under the 2k subscriber mark! Matie, you seriously deserve a much stronger following ...
One step at a time. :-) maybe audiophiles are too serious? Im just having fun. Thanks for your comment!
Really liked this vid. The amount of work and editing is amazing. Good stuff.
I too am about the journey, cheers.
The guitars and the two chics got me to subscribe. Seriously I'm looking to build this pair. Thanks
Good reviews!! Thank you. You have a refreshing and very entertaining channel. Love full range drivers!! 👌👍
Nice to see another channel who also enjoys the open baffles as much as we do. Nice video, keep up the good work. I enjoy watching yours as well.

yes so stoked to watch this
Great job
My Equator Audio D5's (defunct English brand)made me a believer in coaxial. Lii Audio has some of the most interesting full-range speakers on the market right now, imo.
I also still own a pair of Verity Audio (Encores). The Spatial Audio X4's and X5's are more full range, top and bottom, with the same openness, transparency, detail, better dynamics, more high end sparkle, and more height information. They are however just as sensitive to room placement and toe in.
Great video, love the humor! I have two sets of open baffle speakers, the Lil F15's and the F18's open baffle, Each big driver I run in parallel with either the Lil Fast 8's or the Silver 8's as open baffles, the two driver combination sounds amazing, even better than a single driver open baffle speaker. Wiring speakers in parallel is easy to test out for those of you interested. The sound stage on the F18's is gigantic, breathtaking, like the musicians are actually in the room with you. Its something you have to hear yourself to believe. Moving to open baffle from cabinet speakers was by far the biggest jump in my audiophile setup I've ever made. FYI: I'm a tube guy too!
Let’s be friends!! Hahaha man, cool setup! I think I prefer the idea of using a smaller silver driver with them instead of a super tweeter. And now I reeeeeeally want the f18.

I love the open baffle concept. I have a wonderful PrimaLuna Tube Amp that outputss 35WPC. I plan on building some open baffle speakers using Cube Audio Fc8 Fullrange Drivers which have received rave reviews. It seems we like similar concepts. At present I have KEF Q900 Towers which are 91db efficient and are a good price / performance match for tubes.
Loved this video! Awesome work.
I ordered a set open baffle F-15's this weekend. I was frustrated that the 300b tube amp I recently purchased didn't sound that great with a set of speakers I purchased specifically for the 300b. They should arrive by the end of this week. The price was something I could live with and I'm hoping they'll work out. I'm not really interested in constructing the baffles myself so the finished version appealed to me more.
Very, very, very good video. Thank you very much, and a happy new year from A Coruña, Galicia, Spain.
Great vid. I really like how you keep it interesting. I have the Zu DW's after many different speakers believe I have found my sound. I'm very surprised you don't have more subscribers guessing your fairly new to YT. We need to get this channel out there. Love the honest approach.
Im still new at YT. Thanks for the feedback!
Love your videos. Really entertaining and informative.
BTW, I love triodes and open baffles. I DIY'd a set inspired by Fikus P17s. Used 10" vintage alnico coax from Coral on top and 18" for the bass. Only go down to 40 or 50 but size does matter. It is a big deep airy sound stage. Can't listen to box speakers now, even on RUclips demo clips I hear the closed in sound.
This was fun , Keep going
I'm digging the content. I watch tons of audio equipment videos and have never seen you. The glorious RUclips algorithm brought me here.
I'm now subscribed
I hope you keep showing ways to make budget gear that hangs with far more expensive gear...... I am now looking into possibly going this route with the OB.
My impression from reading Tekton reviews is that the cabinet is the weak link. For that reason they need top of the vibration managing platforms like Starsound Sistrum, etc to really reach what they're capable of. Thats true of all speakers, but more so for Tekton.
Interesting!
Really cool video. You would be a fun guy to hang with, for sure! I love my pair. I am messing around with baffle shapes and sizes. I find that they set up fairly easy. I also find that sub integration wasn't much of an issue. Not totally necessary for alot of music, but, just in case! My room has some natural plusses to help eliminate destructive standing waves, without being a classic soundroom. Wife won't allow anything too crazy. I love how sensitive they are without being harsh. I welcome some of the rolloff in the high frequency. No irritatating, overly etched treble. Just natural. Coherency of all sound is the best I have ever heard. Sold my Legacy Focus towers, which were really great, traditional, multi way speakers.
Yes you are right, the roll off is very nice for a high sensitivity spkr. Thanks for the feedback!
I have a new Lii15 and Lii8 which I will run in parallel with a new baffle next week. I’ll forward a video when it’s done. Love your program, keep up the great work!
Ohh cant wait!!
Love the videos, can't wait for your review on the Decware mystery amp.
Thats a while away, I will do my best to keep you entertained until then. :)
You rock man!
Nah man! You rock! 😎
I am contemplating switching everything up and going open baffle with sub and low watt SET amp. I want to explore something other than box speakers I've used all my life. Good video ..subscribed 👍
Exactly how I felt. Wanted to learn something new.
Great review! Run them in parallel with a pair of Fast 8’s. Absolutely stunning!
How so?
Connect the positives on both speakers together then connect the negatives on both speakers together. I’m doing another pair right now. The impedance will drop to about 4 ohms but impedance isn’t a black & white issue anyway.
I had these speakers for a few years now. The Caintuck version. Amazing soundstage and depth My only issue is the height of the image. If I could get the stage to lift they are pretty much perfect. I’m using them with a Cayin CS55a
I am adding some super tweeters to the rig, positioned a bit higher with proper time alignment, I have a feeing it will raise the image. Stay tuned
Were you surprised at the bass response with the caintucks?
@@hificave You might try firing the tweeters upward into a deflector so that you get both a rear firing and a front firing effect.
@@mkshffr4936 i will try that!! Thanks
great contact and enjoy the show's. So here is the question, I have a Pioneer SX-1280 (185W) that has just been recapped, cleaned and all pots tunes. I am thinking of upgrading my speakers to an open baffle. However I have noticed that you are using mostly tube amps that have less punch then the Pioneer. Wondering what you thoughts would be on the LIIONIDAS with the W15 and a fast 10 or fast 8 paired to the Pioneer SX-1280. I look forward to reviewing your thoughts.
I cant say. Never played with the pioneer. So anything I say about it, would be pure speculation.
That's a phase plug and a whizzer cone. Super tweeter will be expensive. Consider the 2way open baffle on lii audio site, the smaller crystal driver should give more top end, and the augmentation bass driver will dig lower... would be very cool to see that speaker reviewed!
I’ll ask my “reviewer” buddies to get a set. ;-)
Great video! Direct connect to your amp or is there a crossover Lii-Song's?
Direct sir.
I have a pair, a Lii song, audio S-10 speakers. I’m not able to hear some of these great amps that you drive speakers with. I want to make my last purchase of an amplifier as I am a senior citizen 75yrs. I have been an audio file and purchased mini amps speakers, preamp, turntables, and such over the last 50 years. Audio Research,Krell , Conrad Johnson, Pass Labs, and the list could go on quite a bit more. Will you make a couple of amplifier recommendations to me since you have tried many amplifiers on these speakers? I look forward to your videos every day. Oh Dude! You made me smile. Thank you so much! I've pretty much decided to go the OB route. The Lii F15's sound like a great place to start. This will be my last system (72 and in declining health, but I need one more fun project before I change addresses!) What are the dimensions of the baffles here with the 15's in them? I have ready access to 1 3/8 inch thick fingerjoint oak panels, 24" wide by 3' to 6' tall, at extremely reasonable prices at our local Menards store. I've also considered using T & G hardwood planks, or laminating 3/4" birch play with 1/4" cherry ply for the face. The other burning question I have is...where did you get the base? Love the hockey puck thing, but the base is interesting. I could use 2 X 12 I suppose, like some of the Caintuck OBs have. Anyway, thanks again. I simply had to Subscribe. And the 'dollies' you have interspersed - Brilliant! Thanks
Thank you!! The base used was combination of a metal rack and rubber feet. I would recommend building a proper base. I noticed a huge difference when I did my own custom baffles for them later on.
Love your channel. Don't you think F15 missing some freqs especially upper mid to high ? I did try to love my f15 open baffle but missing so many thing except decent vocal sounds.
So many factors, how did you use it? Open baffle? Ported box? Sealed box?
Did you let them break in for 200 hrs?
What equipement was it paired with?
Yes I have open baffle with two sub woopers. It's worst sounding speaker for my 40 years audio life. It's not even better than 8 inch Vintage Elctro Voice " michigan " full range (open baffle) . I tried tubes and highend solid state amps with $10K DAC.
I also have AltecLansing 640G (15inch Full range closed box with port) Sounds quality is night and day.Did you recived speakers from Lii or you bought by yourself?@@hificave
You should try Lii Audio’s reference drivers - the Silver line ( they replaced the Crystal series ) , the Fast line is way below their Silver line ( if price is an indicator - a 10 inch Silver is more than double the F15s ). This would be my next spkr paired with tube class A SET amps Willsenton R800i , with Rel subs , with Denafrips DAC. Looking forward to the journey. Thanks for a great video.
I certainly want to! Thanks for the feedback
I have these on platforms and tilted to lift the stage, it worked well and I didn't lose bass in my room. They're paired with big SS monoblocks tho'; want to try some kind of SET with these babies.
Nice one ! Thanks for the detailed and cohesive feedback of your hifi journey, it was better than i expected. And yes, i think your channel could, very probably become, one of the best audio channels on YT . God bless you and your family.
So there is a thought that holds me: if understood correctly, you prefer the F15 rig (with the subs & all), against the Verity setup ?
PS: your plants are gorgeous ! Am a fan myself.
I prefer this rig over my verity rig. But its not only because of the f15. Its the result of all the current components, I strongly think it is more than just speakers that are giving me this preference with this rig.
@@hificave I see. What about the overall spending on both rigs, is one much more than the other, or not ?
@@Philo1 Verity rig ~ 26k

But you must consider time and effort with the current rig. Verity rig was easier to setup effort to result ratio was simpler both in matching and space and positioning.

how low Lii F15 go down in open baffle U shaped with 15 inch wings?
Thank you
I'm interested in open baffle I've been through a lot of speakers I come across GR research the encores and for a box speaker they sound phenomenal but I want to do open baffle I don't think my amps would be good for them Jeff Rowland!?
Unless you try, you wont know.
But if you rowland amps are over 50watts, you will need a low gain pre or source so the high sensitivy drivers dont get overwhelmed.
Wow! You get full marks for content, entertainment and production value. Big thumbs up!
As someone who feels they have pretty much arrived at destination with a big triode amp and Klipsch Cornwall III's I fully understand your journey.
Using live acoustic music as a reference I feel that adding any more "refinement" would come at the expense of removing some of the live quality.
The Lii 15's are used without any filtering and there's no upper mid glare?
Right now, with the right source, its sublime! With the wrong chain its not great. But let me think about this a bit, and come back with a better answer. 😎

Ribbon tweeters all around, warm midranges, planar or maggies for a center voice channel, subwoofer open baffle arrays matched with mains( large open baffle) for 30 to 100hz and high end commercial HT subwoofer for 15 to 30hz.
I just made that up. But I bet it sounds awesome.
The review starts @ 17:30 after a nice little stroll down the lane.
Consider a rear facing tweeter. Eliminated issue with phasing as it is dispersed
I will love to try this ob speakers for sure, but my concern is this: my "sweet spot" is 8 feet from each speaker and because this decware OB design (the drivers are located way below where they normally should be that is ear level aprox.}, what worries me is that the image of the musicians will be located well below they should be , from my point of view with this design, you will hear the music like if you were seeing a concert from a balcony .... am I correct ?, remember that I sit 8ft from the speakers, I cannot be further away. Thanks in advance for your input.
I am 9 feet away, and when speakers a standing straight up the image is eye level, maybe a foot lower, when you tilt them back a few degrees, it elevates it a couple feet to eye level plus a little bit. But, the image is very large, so it doesnt feel like your on balcony, but like, 4th row. I am adding a driver to each speakers soon to see if it raises the image. Plus you can make baffles that are a bit taller, which can help
Thanks for the input and keep us updated about your findings if you finally decide to try what you mention.
Did you ever do a video of what you had to "tune-in" in your system to make the LiiF15 sing?
And what was missing from the start?
Thanks,
Now that you've discovered the magic of open baffle speakers, not dissimilar to discovering Class A tube amps, I would recommend Danny's NX-Otica DIY kit from GR Research. Adding a Super Tweeter to what you have will introduce Baffle Step Loss, which will cause a frequency suck-out. People also like the Sapphires (I forget the company), which are a bit more relaxed than the NX-Oticas but are also open baffle. I do NOT recommend investing in Super Tweeters as good ones are pricey and will introduce the problems mentioned above, but going to one of these better speaker designs are worth it and are likely to be no more expensive than the cost of the Super Tweeters themselves. Food for thought...
Thank you for this information! I was hesitant with super tweeters, but this information is adding an aspect of research for me. Thank you. I want to also(as much as possible) see how far I can push the concept without having crossovers.. ok thanks again. I have some research to do.
@@hificave I use a pair of Heil AMT1's for supertweeters, mounted on top of the baffles and angled slightly towards listening position. Running a 2nd order passive crossover at 10khz and powering them with their own class A/B amp. Seems to be working for me.
super tweeter + baffle step = freq suckout?? ... meh
My take;
I'd never shy away from pursuing subjective additives based upon another enthusiast's anecdotal suggestions. Period.
More specifically in this case, implementation of the super-tweeter in free field, wouldn't incur any baffle diffraction consequences.
Besides, super tweets aren't typically integrated like a sub, with measurements and a keen eye on both the time and freq domain... no, a super tweet is more akin to a "season to taste" element.
Buy a quality attenuator, and have fun with experimentation discovering the degree of seasoning that works for you.
Left brain, right brain, I can never remember which is which, however put the analytical one away and simply enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Hi - Great fun review. Trust you've seen Danny's vid on adding supertweeters - upward firing on same plane as your voice coil would be real easy with your Lii's, and could be hidden from view. You could experiment with an inexpensive tweeter with a single cap.
Baltic Birch would be a good material to make those speakers with.
Something is in the works.

it is when people start talking about using multiple full range drivers and sub woofers with independent SS amps that I don't understand why people think it is advantageous to use a crossover less speaker instead of a 3 way speaker. When people think it's necessary to use two or three cross over less full range with a woofer doesn't that reflect that the speakers are not truly Full Range Speakers
Its not needed to. It was first done as a fun test, and it was so surprising what effect of having two different full ranges do that I wanted to dig a bit more in hopes to understand when it works well and it doesn’t.

You guys need to get rid of the binding posts on the speaker and hardwire your speaker wire directly to the voice coil wire....check out this for a pic on how to do this:
www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=121548.500
The baffle needs to be at least 3 inches thick and possibly contrained layer damped. You can use layers of hardwood, 16 ply birch ply, bamboo ply and you can use green glue inbetween the layers. Using different materials cancels the sonic footprint of using just one thick piece and green glue just plain lowers resonance big time. Of course the bottome plate should be massive, as well......and footers are another subject. Ground enhancers mounted on the ground voice coil wire along with Bybee Quantum clairfiers mounted on the magnet take it to another whole level.
which page on the associated audio circle site shows the voice coil ?

Depending on the voltage you feed the electromagnet they are capable of 115 DB
With a watt
15 k a pair and I would bet in the right listening room with a tiny little SET
Effortless is what I imagine
I heard a set of Klipsch Mach 3
I think they were
Massive stack of boxes
But these two farmers in their late 70’s
They were averaging about 1/4 watt
Effortless and very musical
But I still think that field coil would be super fun to play with and swap amps and tubes
Can I borrow a large amount of money to proceed with the experiment
