- Star rankings and the NFL Draft always correlate as validation or indictment on the recruiting industry, and Josh Pate took some time on Late Kick Live Ep 508 to discuss what we learned. How much more likely are you to be drafted in the 1st round as a former 5-star than a 4 or 3-star? Meemaw always said recruiting rankings doesn’t guarantee success but are a good indicator!
My contention was never that stars don't matter. My contention is that stars are very often assigned by a recruits early offer list, and not an evaluation of his talents.
Recruiting services are great at evaluating the several hundred kids that attend one of the major camps before their senior years.
Problem is that's about 5% of the D1 talent coming in, and while I understand their time is limited, it would be more honest to say a kid was not evaluated than it is to slap 2-3 stars on him based solely on him being offered a scholarship.
I completely agree with you there.
While useful, the ranking greatly suffers from reverse causality. A prospect often sees a big jump in ratings after committing to big names like Bama and GA. This ensures that power-house programs automatically have the most highly rated kids. That being said, the offer list and commit school do serve as a great indicator of the capability and potential of a kid.
Favorite voice in CFB. Always logic and facts not bias (No Iowa State bias, they’re just facts)
Rattler is going to be the steal of the draft
Wrong
See how LSU was CFP ranked last season and the season prior to see how SEC bias is subtle yet real.
Measure with a micrometer - mark with a pencil - cut with a chainsaw. The five star concept is not important to the success of a college football team. Saban said more or less the same. The top 150 is important. Teams that have been successful at being top five programs (playoff teams) will bring in 10 to fifteen a year. Players in this range are above average players for ANY program and therefore will compete and perform well against the best teams in the country.
Star rankings are important for recruiting future high draft pick candidates. But high star rankings do not guarantee a winning program in college football. So what do you want? A winning college football team. or a lot of players who are high draft choices? You can be Michigan. Or you can be LSU. Which do you choose?
Michigan recruits a ton of 4 star players -Michigan fan
Michigan recruits better than most schools
They correlate pretty highly with college programme success and draft position.
If you look at nfl all pro teams the and nfl earnings the ranking then show alot less relevance
LSU has more national championships than Michigan in the last 20 years. And multiple heisman winners
Recruiting rankings correlate strongly with championships, actually.
They only matter when my team gets 5 stars, I don’t make the rules 🤷🏾♂️
Yes, the NFL falls for the SEC bias. We see it when they draft QBs like Anthony Richardson and Will Levis, and they get as much draft hype as they did.
CFB fans know they weren't that great in college but because of the SEC patch, it gave them that assurance and bias that they would be okay in the NFL.
Would Mac Jones have been drafted had he not worn a Bama jersey? Probably not.
My SEC bias argument, by the way, has never been at the top. It's always been for the mid-tier to bottom teams that benefit from it the most. Those at the top have earned it.
The Pac12 got screwed by time zones. The east coast is too drunk to stay up past noon here, so what are ya gonna do ?
As a West Coast guy, I'm sad for the demise of the Pac, but glad it went out with such a burst of talent.
The Washington huskies… doing more with less
What was Tom Brady's star rating?
This is what we call an outlier, David. Your logic is completely flawed. Watch the video again and pay attention to the DATA.
how long are you going continue referring to Raiola as “the former Georgia commit” does it give him that much clout to continue using this same line 5 months later? 😂
Transfer portal wins AGAIN! 😁
Are there still idiots out here that think, “stars don’t matter?”
Oh that “shitty” fsu team w no stars just had 10 drafted and 3 more signed immediately lol y’all suck
The is the dumbest thing I saw. A lot of these players were going to be first round picks weather they were 5 stars or not. U think the bears were gonna pass up on Caleb Williams if he was a 2 star. Being a first round pick doesn’t guarantee success in the NFL. None of the 5 Star running backs were drafted in the first round. This video is idiotic
one of the more uninformed replies of the year. Congrats!
Caleb Williams was a 5 star and the #1 ranked player coming out of high school......
@@LateKickwithJoshPate The most uninformed and potatoesque reply of the year. FIFY
