- John Cullinane, from County Cork step dancing the Liverpool Hornpipe; Seán O Cearbhaill from Limerick on the fiddle & looking on are the members of the Tulla Céili Band. Recorded on 29th September 1963 at a Fleadh Cheoil in Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland.
It's attractive to watch the dancing..But..Listen to the faultless violin playing ( accompaninment ) A perfect Duo..

Enchanting. ⭐☘️⭐
Especially together. 💚☘️💚
Beautiful. ❤️💙❤️
Very impressive... It is little wonder that John Cullinane has become an Irish dancing master and the world's leading authority on Irish dance history.
Remarkable a musician able to play at the right tempo ......without speeding up and up what ever happen to this gift?
This is by far the best varsion of hornpipe I have ever listened.
Beautiful. Such accomplished and restrained artistry.I should love to have seen Ireland back then.
The ease in the playing and in the steps. No speeded up dis ease.
True tradition.
Wow I really love this. Irish dance, today, has literally just turned into a bunch of glitz and glam. I wish it was still more like this. The beats are lovely and fit perfectly with the music. you don't need a bunch of fancy crap to make it look amazing.
Hornpipes played as they should be, a distinct slow beat that times correctly with the dancers feet. It has become a modern 'fashion' to play them at ridiculous speeds to impress listeners....If you listen to any of the 'old time' players of Ireland, none of them hurried any tune, there was great attention paid to timing and inflexion.
I agree. Mind you if it hadn't been for those LOTD vhs' I'd never have picked up or studied traditional music.
This has not gone away. You just have a choice now.
@@martinfreekie7659 hi please can I ask if this is from a dance school, Claude Jean Moriarty?
The real deal
that is probably the most perfect sound i have ever heard
Best comment here. 😊
What a legend. I think I have all of Dr. Cullinane’s books.
My favorite ceili band in the background - their name visble on the drum - the mighty Tulla Ceili Band 💚🤍🧡 🇮🇪
Up the Banner! 💛💙💛💙
I love that this is so much more lyrical than the breakneck speed we seem to aspire to now.
@freethoughtmusic _The same here in Ireland...Notice also how beautiful the music is...not played at breakneck speed..but every note as clear as a mountain stream...ℳ∁_
@@clarebannerman Exactly.....I don't attend any festivals anymore, way too many otherwise gifted young players all racing along at breakneck speed to impress onlookers tourists and those who don't know anything about Irish Traditional music......The old music was rarely ever played that way, maybe wrong to term any of it now as 'traditional' because, apart from the scores, no, it isn't....
@freethoughtmusic well explained. I haven't gone to any dance festivals in recent years, but I hadn't thought about the fact that they are most likely to reflect the dumming down of music, art etc, though now awareness is growing at last, that authentic is pure, simpler, higher quality, better. Like origal nature based crafts and Cornish hedge "laying, making" training, dry stone walls of Yorkshire. My aunt ran Cork dance school when Jean Moriarty gave it to her and another friend colleague
Coleman and Morrison and their contemporaries actually played faster than 90% of modern players if we are talking about beats per minute. So, that's pure nonsense. What might be different is the phrasing.
If only Irish dancing was still like this.....
I know. I just searched for TRADITIONAL Irish dance and almost all of the ones that came up were Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and later. I enjoy that too but it's not traditional
Simon's Cowell'd it. @@bunnybgood411
This is absolutely fabulous. My great grandfather started a dancing school off in Ennis in 1904. His name was Tommy Redmond. The dancing school was then taken over by my grandmother Mrs White from Connolly Villas. My mother was a champion dancer in Clare during the 40s and 50s - This man reminds me of her dancing. Her name is Maura White. What an excellent video. She also danced with the Tulla and Kilfernora. Great times!!
I'm an Irish Step teacher and this is so wonderful to see! I teach more this style. I could watch this again and again! 😍
I do
There is nothing more joyous than a male dancer like this gentleman.Hands by his side and as our dance master used to say " do on your left foot what you do on your right".RIP Master Kerrigan.
Absolutely beautiful - rhythmic, exact timing with great emphasis on the sound and connection between music, musician and dancer. The best.
Yes .. a beautiful, proper rhythm and pace to this fiddling (i.e. a touch s-l-o-w-e-r than might be otherwise), thus permitting the dancer to better demonstrate his skill .. par excellence !! Great posting !!
Remarkable. The top half of him appears to be watching TV about five miles away while his legs are judging all of the moves and making all the decisions.
Wonderful Irish dancing! don't ever stop this dancing!
Michael Flatley eat your heart out👏☘️ beautiful.
I'm sure he has watched this clip. I met Michael & his wife in a pub in Dublin a few years ago..Very nice couple no airs or graces.
I also recommend you watch Michael Tubridy & his wife Celine dancing The Blackbird in the old style..It's up here on YT..
This is the way a hornpipe should be danced.. its the way I was taught..but could never master in a million years to this degree. Fine man John.. as you'd say years ago. thank god we have footage of this great.! I 'm lighting a candle for you clarebannerman for putting this out there, thank you,,take care x
Go raibh maith agat...I need all the candles I can get...M
I say that man dancing is well dead now
@ Francie Stokes. No, he’s still alive. He’s an adjudicator and examiner with the Irish Dancing Commission. He was also a Doctor of Marine Biology I think based at University College Cork.
@@rincemor People looked older in those days, they really did
LOVE this!!! No taps just real dance. So beautiful!!! I wish more would dance without taps on their shoes. It has such a rich sound and is a dying art.
Metal taps were & are not allowed by his organisation (CLRG) but we had extra pieces of leather, often with nails/tacks in, on the front of the sole to aid sound at that time. Later replaced by fibre glass or synthetic taps.
Fiddle sounds so incredible, singing like a nintingale!
One of the most sweet and touching things I've seen ever :-)
Absolutely incredible stuff. With the give in the stage I don't know how the dancer stayed with the rhythm... Incredible.
The more experienced you get in dancing, the easier you adapt to a stage's 'feel'. In competitions, many dancers grab the opportunity to dance a bit on the stage during a break (if permitted of course) to just get a feel of the stage, which can help them when they are up for their competition.
And then you have understanding the rhythm. For me, dancing hornpipes was a real struggle in the beginning, although my teacher did say I understood the rhythm. But as long as I don't 'feel/understand' it, I'm lost. But once I get it right, I seem to be very good at it (one of the girls in class nearly melted in front of me once when my teacher was in doubt which new dance to teach me and she really recommended the Job of Journeywork (yes, I know, that's not a hornpipe but a traditional set, but it has a very hornpipey-feel to it)
Phenomenal that folks like this can use their feet as instruments, fellow sounds like clockwork :D
Lovely music & lovely steps
God, this is the REAL irish dance!
The fiddling and dancing are great but I’m amazed that “stage” didn’t collapse!
Flawless. The Liverpool hornpipe.
It's so great to be able to watch such legends as Dr. John dancing in their heyday! I bet he could still pull out the same hornpipe no problem. :o)
What a great collection of old Irish dance videos, thanks for sharing!
I have this DVD; and am currently trying to learn these steps from watching him in this scene.
It hasn't been easy; but I'm determined to get it and keep these steps alive!
What dvd is that?
SUPREME PERFECTION !!! Simply Wonderful - despite the BOUNCING STAGE !!
Even with your eyes closed..its one of the most satisfying sounds ever .Love this man and the fiddle player. Pure magic in my mind..give anything to be able to dance like that. What a dancer..what a beautiful fiddle player too.xxx
Delightful! Exquisite dancing and wonderful fiddling.
My, that is a strange custom. Who came up with the idea, "let's pretend we have no arms!" :-P Now I could be mistaken, but I believe that's me Uncle Leo playin'the fiddle.
who could possibly vote down this gem!
Probably Michael Flatley, who has perverted Irish step dancing beyond repair
Keyboard warriors aka idiots.....the internet is full of them and on every site.....Watched a very elderly gentleman playing a lovely tango on an ancient piano accordion, and 47 thumbed it down?!
Elena KB, only an eeejit would have voted down. Envy.
Boy..those Cork men can dance.! John, you haven't changed a bit...
No entiendo cómo es que a los chicos de ahora les parezca aburrido bailar éste tipo de música, es fantástico y fascinante
Dzisiejszy taniec to "gimnastykowanie sie " przy muzyce.Tance - polamance !
I love this type of music and dance! I have for as long as I can remember! Never could I find it boring!
Wish I had been there with my Mum and Dad.
Fantastic.
Thank you for sharing this video online.
You have a real treasure trove here.
All the best.
Superb, so skillful and graceful. Prefer this any day to modern Irish dancing. Thanks to wonderful musician & music too. All so enjoyable, thank you. 🤗
Exquisite! This is the first tune I learned on the whistle and uilleann pipes.
He doesn't miss a beat!
Wonderful! Great rhythm and clean sounds. Great dancing and wonderful playing.
When I was learning to play hornpipes, my teacher gave me this video to watch. Then it all made sense :)
Wonderful!! Simplemente hermoso baile!!!
this is so amazing. i love the traditional irish dancing, and this guy got EVERY SINGLE BEAT he was supposed to in that hornpipe!! which, trust me, is VERY hard to do. the rhythm gets so fast at times, it's easy to miss a beat. great video!
Lovely dancing, the way it should be. Well done!!
Too wonderful for words, Michael. I continue to learn so much from your amazing channel. Thank you.
the fiddle player here is really great I love the Liverpool hornpipe.
its like going back to my dancing days . when I done this hornpipe
I always wanted the music faster . may be the steps did not have much
in them . or I was a little ahead of my time . as I was know for my timing
john has great timing and rhythm that's why I love this clip . but saying
that he is not a great dancer I don't know what it is but timing and rhythm
is great but there is a lot more needed to be a great dancer . I understand John Cullinane is a master of dance now and a history master on irish dance . I must
get hold of one of his books . thank you for this post great to go back in time again
watching this clip is great . john is a nice dancer but when you watch
Donncha O Muimhneacháin all so from cork around the same time
as john Cullinane the early 1960th donncha is a really great dancer
you cant can't compare the two . and his dancing with celine hession
is a master class. donncha rip was really ahead of his time . just watching
him dance made me want to dance like him .
Wow. If only my hornpipe was as precise and perfectly timed as this...Hah. That was amazing, and the poor stage looked like it was going to collapse in!
I can not believe, How fast his feet are moving. I'm totally amazed by his skill and by the lovely music. An art nearly lost in time. So so sad.
Awesome, The spend of his steps are amazing, a blur in fact.
One of the reasons I'm proud to be one fourth completely Irish.
Yep!
Anyone interested in Irish dancing should also read Dr.John P. Cullinane's book:
"Aspects of the history of irish Dancing"
someone said there "the stage looks dangerous" thats obviously a comment from one who knows very little of its construction - if it didnt spring like it does it would be usleless to dance on......well done on your great videos Clarebannerman
I'm sure God enjoyed that. And blessed the Irish.
Cool!, John was my examiner on my TCRG in 2004! he was great!
great timing that's how it should be done . simple no mad steps just perfect
thank you for another great post
Beautiful culture
Wonderful......seems like now they focus on how fast you can dance rather than a focused and intricate set of steps..
impressive - slick no messing with this guy and a little ripple of applause at the end.
Perfect - I enjoyed this so much. Thank you.
INCREDIBLY LOVELY THANKS
Absolute pleasure to watch real, authentic dancing instead of the Spanish type Riverdance nonsense.
Simplemente fantástico!
Yes
Great!
Wish you all a Happy New Year!
Michael,
Vienna, Austria
when men weren't afraid to dance
excelente musica y danza
thanks for sharing such a great video.
Love it to bits xx
ha the tulla ceili band were in scariff last weekend still going strong. love all this old stuff its a gem.
love the music
I'm blown away by the speed of his feet. Some of the steps are a total blur, blink and you miss them. A true lost art indeed.
I love to watch them dance but it makes my feet hurt LOLOL :) I my feet would
be throbbing and burning. :)
I learnt Irish dancing at the Catholic primary school hall on Saturdays in Melbourne, here in Australia around the era. This is the style we learnt and that I still love. The Riverdance era with the ultra high kicking and fake hair seems somewhat bizarre to me, although I admit is a marvellous spectacle .
This really demonstrates of the underlying rhythm of a hornpipe. Session players should listen to the triplets the dancer is tapping out.
Красавчик. :)
The best I ever seen
love
Simply Great !
Ahh I always love live music when I compete. Practicing with a CD player is nice, but I really appreciate the musicians (: haha
oh my god, it's uploaded 12 years ago...
Wonderful!
Exquisite!
I’d like to request a five hour long version of this video nonstop
Very interesting , I first saw Michael flatley perform this same dance
Brilliant!!❤
Can't be that bad. It's lasted forty five years!
I would like to attend live performance of this show
Brilliant !!!
@Djabenusiri I think we still completely focus on beats. They just focus also on everything else, like height, movement and crossing.
Beautiful recording. Beats anything modern I have seen to date.
One of many tragedies of the world is that most camera men are not also dancers; so it never dawns on them to tarin the camera on the dancer, full-body, especially the feet; and nowhere else.
Wow, it looks like the stage can every moment collapse...
What fiddle is this? It sounds so familiar to me. Can anyone tell me? The title and from who's the original song, or who else plays this fiddle too?
I love this music and this dance. GO IRISH!!!!!
Don't know the fiddler, but the tune is Liverpool Hornpipe.
@clarebannerman this must have been the 44th year! lol
Well said!
@Djabenusiri ya know good point. Im not at all a dancer myself but your point is clear in this demonstration. its like a bodhran present... and a good one at that. :D
I remember when I first saw this in HD. Lol
Awesome
..gosh his feet have got a life off their own!
¡Bravo!
