This is why I like you. When he said “don’t use box stuff for this you’re better than that” I felt that because I am definitely a person who thinks I deserve an award for doing everything from scratch! But when you are a person that cooks you know the significance of doing it from scratch and the. Taste! ❤️❤️❤️
He was talking about the buttercream part not the cake mix
He said you could use box mix lol
"im better than u for not buying cake mix"
As a line cook with professional cooking experience, I prefer to do anything from scratch.
Nothing wrong with using box mix. It’s the frosting you don’t want to use.
Trying cake pops for the first time today. When you said “don’t use pre made frosting, you’re better than that” I audibly said “I’m not” lol great video tho can’t wait to try!!
lmaoo i literally said the same thing, so funny
But I didn’t see where he use the frosting
😂
Heading to HEB now to get my "Box Cake Mix" & "Frosting"
Once you crumble up the cake, you add the frosting until it gets the desirable consistency and yes, you can use premade frosting. I used it and it ended up amazing just like Starbucks.
Omg thank you. Those small tips like "don't push your sticks too much cause you don't want it to poke from the other side" actually helps a lot. There are so many cake pop recipes but people don't give small, subtle tips like these which are actually very important.
Made these tonight for my husband's 30th. But instead of trusting my baking skills 😏 seeing as how I can make even just a boxed cake taste like a shoe, I went and grabbed the Costco pound cakes 3 pack and it came out so amazing and especially since it was my first time!! Definitely going to be my absolute go to for parties! Can't wait for my little girls party she's gonna get these too 🥰
Did you just break the pound cake or had to cut the outside part?
@emma please respond to the question I'm interested in knowing too.
How did you make them like that?
As always, Chef John provides a master class in a process that most other chefs offer minimal direction. I love how thorough John is as he teaches us! Thanks for another amazing tutorial, Chef!
He was a math teacher before he became a chef.. his presentation style comes from his passion for teaching I guess.. love it
Great video and great recipe 👌, he is really perfect. I enjoy his videos very much.
Take a look at my channel too if you desire 😊.
I would be very happy to share my simple and delicious recipes with you 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I've worked under chefs, and they explain pretty well.

When John said, “when things get warm you get sad” I really felt that because I live in Florida and I made these on a humid summer day
This video should be titled. "All of the reasons why you should never attempt to make cake pops, tips and tricks" lol I love how real and relatable Chef John is. He keeps it 100. Now I know why my cake pops always fail and how to correct it. 👍
i want to try this now. literally take cake and mix in buttercream. not going to try to put a shell around them though, that looks painful
I hate cake pops. I hate the idea of cake pops 😒
@@janusconner3710okay so why tf are you on this video? 😂
@@adcoates6228 why, to answer to YOU, of course! LMAO 🤣
Hey John here’s a tip: when heating chocolate, candy melts, etc in the microwave, use a plastic container instead of glass. Glass holds onto heat which is why your bowl gets hot even though the melts aren’t melted. Plastic won’t have this issue. I believe sugar geek is where I learned this-I can’t take credit myself. Take care!❤
Pretty sure you're not supposed to put any kind of plastics in the microwave. I think it's a..... cancer thing? But you do you... lol
Hi, can I use white chocolate compound instead? Thanks
I love how you explain things and aren’t afraid of making mistakes! And you look exactly like my nephew!😅
"like exactly like". another mistake. a few go a long way! lol
@@SandraLovesRoses oops i just saw that!!! let me correct that thank you!
John i am a ten year old boy who loves to bake thank you so much for showing me these recipes online, I also love to cook
I became interested in cake pops because Starbucks was bugging with charging >$5 for one. Not only that but these are great for portion control when you want a little treat. Thanks for the tips!
John, you truly had me laughing out loud with that "Mega Cake Pop" moment. Great video, as always!
For a second I thought it was an ad. lol
I started at the cat pawing at the ball lol 😂
Me too 🤣
I laughed so hard at that 🤣🤣🤣 my husband was like what's so funny 😂😂😂 I just told him MEGA CAKE POP and kept laughing lol
Oh my god! I was so intimidated to watch baking channels because I have zero ideas on baking but you, I feel like you’re teaching me in person and you makes it easy for me to understand. Thank you.
John, I really love your videos. I am a new hobby baker and I appreciate the detailed information. Your kindness, quirkiness, and patience are such a joy to experience on the screen, and your step-by-step instructions complete with common mistakes and how to avoid them are making my new hobby so much easier to enjoy! Thank you!
Yayyyy omg!!! Obsessed!!! I work in a bakery so I started saving all the cake and cupcake trimmings, and didn’t know there was an actual science to preparing cake pops!! KINETIC ENERGYYYY WHHAAAAAT that’s crazy! So making these, I’m excited!!! Thank you 💋

I was looking for something to make today on this beautiful Saturday morning- thank you for the inspiration! As a teacher, you must know the reason why your channel excels is because you have a heart of a teacher. Bravo! 🎉

Hi
Hi John! 🤗 WONDERFUL recipe! Absolutely love all of your recipes but your personality is the one we all love even more! Big hug 🤗
That sprinkle drawer is my favorite thing ever lol
Omg! Show the sprinkle drawer again! You're awesome! Also, still waiting for the extrusion discussion... :)
Can i just say that i LOVE ur videos! i watch them for everything I need to make. I SUCK at baking but when I follow ur advice I look like a pro. Im so happy for your channel and for the knowledge you spread. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!
John: I do not want you using the box mix…
Me: *nervously hides container*
Your random thought and comments makes your baking so refreshing! I love it!
I’ve never mentioned this, but I like coming here to get baking advice because John gives very specific instructions & advice on every single baking recipe. And to go with it he has the best personality. Couldn’t ask for more. If you’re a person who watches RUclips a lot for information or to get instructions on something the you know exactly what I mean.
I made this using your frosting to mix into the vanilla cake and Ghirardelli white chocolate to dip the cake pops....it was amazing and so freaking delicious. I have tried to make cake pops several times and this is hands down the best. I can't wait until your cook book is out. Thank you!!!!
Hey I think I wanna try w/ white chocolate too. Did you need to add shortening in order for it to be the right consistency???
@@sTaCiE3398 No, I did not. But if you use a different brand you might have to.
John..You are ABSOLUTELY our Favorite!!..Great Presentation, Easily to be Understood, GREAT Editing getting to the point!👊👍~Marshall
I love how he says, “so easy!” Like yeah, so easy for you! 😂😂
Best explanation of WHY those key steps are mandatory! Excellent! Thank you!
You always make me smile John. I love your enthusiasm. I learned the hard way to trim all the hard and dark pieces off the cake before crumbling. Thanks for sharing.🙂❤️
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Hi! I actually tried this recipe today! And I just have to say, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been looking for a good cake pop tutorial for ages. I have tried some tutorials on RUclips and the cake would fall off the stick. This is by far the EASIEST tutorial also because I used pre made frosting which helped me time wise. I decorated them the same as yours and they turned out stunning! I can’t wait to make these for my cousins when they come over! Thanks so much 😊
Thanks for your cake pop tips. Here is a tip for melting chocolate wafers in the microwave, if anyone is interested. I dip strawberries, and I use a glass bowl, Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers and the microwave. Microwave for 30 secs, and stir, even though the wafers hasn't melted yet, but stir. Then microwave again for 30 secs and stir, then 20 secs and stir. If the wafers aren't runny, add half capful of vegetable oil, stir and microwave for 15 secs and stir. The chocolate should be a good consistency to dip the cake pops. Of course, the chocolate will harden again as you work to dip the cake balls. Wgen that happens, simply repeat the microwave process again. I haven't had any problems with the wafers burning while using this method. I did try coconut oil once, when I didn't have vegetable oil in the cabinet, and it burned.
I love these videos.they are so awesome. Every time I feel like baking I would open up Preppy kitchen and bake
Some very delicious deserts. Since I’m still a kid these videos are very helpful since it demonstrates it one step at a time. thank you John!
Hey John, thank you for another very fun recipe and I can't wait to make these for Easter. So very fun thing to make and of course you always make your recipes fun to watch. Love to you and your family.
I first came across your channel with the video about cake strips (which was life changing). I love how approachable and fun you make baking/cooking. Your recipes never fail to disappoint. Thanks for all the joy and delicious recipes, and I can't wait for your cookbook!
You are so much fun! And you stole my heart when you opened that drawer full of gorgeous squared jars of the prettiest colored sprinkles I've ever seen!
I found this video weeks ago and made the cake pops today! I am so happy I found this video! I’ve tried making cake pops a few times before and every time was an epic failure. Making them today and seeing great results, made me extremely happy. Thank you so much for making this video!
I tried this today and they are amazing. I struggled with the cake to icing ratio before but this was seriously the most helpful video. So delish thank you
Thank you for clearing up this whole candy melt mess!! I have tried so many times to make cake pops with these candy melts and THEY DON'T MELT! It's so frustrating! I've melted them in the oven and everything... Coconut oil makes so much sense!!! Thanks, John!!
Defrost setting in the microwave at 10 sec intervals. Paramount crystals work the best for thinning.
OMG!!! That sprinkles drawer ❤️
I’ve been looking for a cake pop recipe!! Thanks for giving us great directions!
Everyone should buy his book! Super easy to follow recipes that taste and look fantastic ❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Who knew so much went into making cake pops?? You're the bomb, John! They rook marvelous... I think I'll leave it to the experts, like you. They'll be worth every penny!! 😉
this is so comforting
He is literally my comfort RUclips channel.
I’ve been using your recipes since Christmas, I baked different things for 6-7 different occasions and people loved it, every time! Thank you for these amazing videos.
This was really good to know, because my last batch of cake pops failed and now I know where I went wrong. Thanks so much!
Cake pops are fun! I use an old chunk of styrofoam to stick mine in.. Put them in a plastic sleeve and tie on a pretty ribbon for fun party favors! I made 200 for my son's wedding.
My new favorite science teacher. I love how you understand my emotional swings in the kitchen.
I’ve made so many cake pops, but thanks for explaining the cracking issue! I would make them “stick up” instead of “pop up” like you did. That way, I didn’t need a special thing for making them or displaying them. I also trimmed off the caramelization so the inside would be pretty and smooth.
Just a note from my experience with melting chocolate. As far as semi sweet, I’ve had no issues with throwing some in a glass measuring cup, adding a heaping tablespoon of shortening, and microwaving it in 30 second intervals!
Love the sprinkles draw🎉So cute!
You are awesome 🤗 I just love 💕 your recipes.🎉and you make them look so beautiful and delicious.👍
You always try to do something new and extra ordinary and make ur audience feel excited for every next video. I took some inspiration from you especially in my video where I ordered pizza to MrBeast's house! 😂💕

@@julhe8743 hi! I’m late I know lol! But my cousins make cake pops and they just store them in the fridge, but since they don’t make them like this I’m for sure! Hopefully this helps!

I can watch this handsome man bake all day, LOL.
These look so yummy! I want to make them so bad!!!!! Thanks for the great recipe! 😊
Hello John thank you so much for these great recipes.. always love your recipes and loved your vlogs 😊
My daughter's love your video and roll around with laughter when you cut in with "MEGA CAKE POP" after mistakenly saying 35 ounces, not 35 grams. We love it.
I’m having hard time concentrating cause I’m cracking up here with your funny comments 😂😂and sound affects. Thank you for sharing and making my day. 🥰😂👏
I love this and the energy ✨🫶✨ you made learning how to make cake pops so pleasant and exciting! I’m going to trying your recipe 🤩 thank you for making this video.
He makes everything look so easy. Wish I could have him in my kitchen one day for direction for some of my regular blunders. Lol
Thank you very much for adding all of the little warnings! I find myself making tiny mistakes very often that aren’t included in instructions, likely because they may not be meant for beginners 😅 so this was very helpful!
John I love your channel!! You always make everything with such ease and it gives me confidence..coming from a girl who is not the best cook and still improving on my baking. Thank you for all your tutorials
Dear John, thank you so much for this recipe. Although I like to bake, I’ve often wondered how to make cake pops with that nice texture inside. I will be making these. I’ve made your buttermilk pancakes a few times and absolutely love them! Love your presentation and authenticity cuz I, too, make mistakes in the kitchen. 🌸✨☘️🌸✨☘️✨🌸

I always end up making cake pops when my cake cracks or gets messed up when I take it out of the pan 😂
As a Virgo, I appreciate your level of detail. Thanks so much! Can’t wait try to make!
I made the cake pops for my daughter's birthday. I used a boxed mix but made the homemade icing. I cut back on the powdered sugar and it was still sweet. I enjoyed your video and tips! They were delicious!
You always make me feel like you're talking just to me. You answer all my questions before I can ask them. These look so delicious and I am so hungry now. Can you make these with day old cake or cupcakes? Thank you for sharing and keep on caking 💜
Thank you for giving so many detailed tips, everyone acts like dipping stuff in chocolate is easy but when I try it it's a frustrating mess
Hi John, I have very little patience watching how to videos because let me say other people are just boring but watching you is different. Hi John. Can cake pops be made ahead? If so, how far ahead? II am going to make them for my grandchildren for Christmas. They probably can’t be frozen; correct? Merry Christmas 🌟
Cake pops usually last around 3 - 4 days 👍
I don’t know about these specifically, but I do know Starbucks freezes their cake pops!
When he says “for my fellow virgos” that just gives me comfort for my craziness
I'm about to try these with chocolate cake and chocolate ganache, very excited 😍
Do the cake pops need to be refrigerated until serving?
they probably shouldn’t be out of the fridge for more than 2-4 hours. Since there’s butter in them. Judt guessing
He's good at making a lot of things. Cake pops isn't one of them. His candy melt chocolate is too thick for dipping. Get you a Wilton melting pot and Wilton e z thin or paramount crystals (1 to 2 tablespoons), this will smooth out your candy melts perfectly. Also, use a 9x13 pan to make your cake. Like he said, box cake mix is perfectly acceptable. I use two boxes for the 9 x 13. After the cake is done, I let set for 5 to 10 minutes, then I put it in the food processor to break it down. Sometimes I add cream cheese instead of frosting, or I use chocolate ganache if I'm doing chocolate cake. Then I use either a nonstick meat ballers or ice cream scooper to make uniformed size cake pops. I normally let them sit over night in the refrigerator, if in a rush, I put them in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes. And like he said, don't dip them while cold because they chocolate will harden quickly and then crack. Allow almost room temperate before dipping.
Hi I’m Lacee and I’m twelve I’m in baking in 4-H and Your recipes are so helpful and fun ❤
Virgo here too! Thank you so much for this video!
I think I’ll stick to buying these at Starbucks. Lol
This does not look easy 😐
Instead of making a whole cake for cake pops you can just blend sugar cookies from the store in a stand mixer (hope that helped you)
If this is too difficult id suggest just buying already made cake pops. Not gonna get much easier than how this dude is showing. 👍
