And an edit for 2022: a cool fact is the mouth or “jaws” of a shark are not connected to their cranium (also, sharks don’t have a skeleton made of bones, their body is made up mostly of cartilage [the same material that makes up most of your ears, and your nose]). This allows sharks to move their upper and lower jaws separately (the upper jaw of most vertebrates, including us, are “fixed” to the cranium, and only the lower jaw, known as the “mandible”, is moveable), and when they bite, their jaws “extend” forward like a slingshot. This video is a good representation of this fact, but what makes the goblin shark special is how it can extend its jaws way farther than other sharks!

If you want the actual Xenomorph inspiration, look no further than tarantula hawk wasp. It's a wasp that lays it's eggs inside tarantulas and when they hatch they eat the tarantula alive. Slowly. Keeping it alive for as long as possible. Oh, and there are 133 species between the southern US and Amazon rainforest.

Not really, they’re so deep down, legally blind, and slow, so if you’re down there and not being safe it’s kinda your own fault

Wait what depth do goblin sharks live at? I thought they lived in a part of the ocean that could only be traveled in the safety of a submarine.
Goblin sharks live down to depths of at least 4265 feet (1300 m). However, like many deep sea creatures, they will come up near the surface when it's very dark out :)

How is the diver surviving the extreme water pressure?
They aren't at a dangerous depth. Goblin sharks come closer to the surface at night sometimes. This is a rare occurrence.

Idk why but I find extendable jaws in sea creatures really cool. This may be an unpopular opinion but more animals should be able to extend their mouths like that. Imagine if a horse or perhaps a lemur could do that-- I think that would be neat.
