- Ok, so this was my first aquarium dive at the Dubai Mall. Yes, this is a real shark and no editing/photoshop was done. To explain, I was watching the shark swim around. When I turned around to watch it I had too much air in my BCD and couldn't grip the rock. We were told to try not to breath out when a shark is above us because they can feel the vibrations of the bubbles. I also wasn't about to put my arm up to release the air and in the moment didn't think to pull my chord. Now to be honest, every time I'm at that mall I am just waiting to see someone in there get ripped to pieces lol. Well, now the time came for me to be that person. This shark obviously has the craziest teeth out of all the sharks in the tank so when he cut that corner and was in my face, my B hole puckered up quite a bit. He seemed like he was about 5 inches in front of me. I had a million thoughts going thru my head. At first was to take off, but instantly told myself no chance and dumb idea (I can't out swim a shark). Next thought, hey look, there's everyone watching, just waiting for that mauling lol. And of course I thought it was the end. But it also seemed to drag out and I remembered the laughing shark from Strange Wilderness. Overall, I think I handled my cool. After that was over my buddy I was diving with was trying to tell me to calm down. I was trying to explain to him I keep going up and I need to stay down. My dive buddy was a Brother from the Marine Corps so you know he wasn't about to help me lol. If it was gonna get one of us, it was gonna get me.

To all of the shark experts in the comments:
1. That is not a great white.
2. That is not a goblin shark.
3. It is a sand tiger shark.
4. It's not fake.
5. It looks particularly ugly because its missing an eye and has deformed gums, honestly it'd have a harder time surviving in the wild than in an aquarium.
6. It does not need hundreds of miles of open ocean, again it's not a great white. Sand tigers move slowly and don't need that much room, if the tank was too small you'd see a very pronounced curve in it's spine.
7. It's not struggling to breath, opening and closing it's mouth like because that's how sand tigers normally breathe. They can suck water into their mouth and past their gils manually allowing them to move slower and draw less attention to themselves, a particularly useful trait for an ambush hunter. They can also gulp air at the surface to achieve neutral buoyancy so they can stay completely still while looking for prey.
8. Not all sharks struggle in captivity, sand tigers are the most common sharks in aquariums because they survive so well in captivity.
9. Sand tiger sharks are endangered and the Dubai Mall Aquarium runs a breeding programme to help keep the species alive.

I read that this shark is very old and that it's jaw is disformed...the staff at the aquarium take very good care of him.
This poor shark is blind, is not harmless but is like living in a retirement house with people feeding you, living nice and calm, and he don't seem aggressive, just curious because he felt the vibrations of bubbles

It definitely gives off an uncanny valley sort of effect because sharks aren’t supposed to be still in the water like that; everyone knows that they have to keep moving and are energetic swimmers - but not these “creepy” Sand Tigers. 😅

For anyone who doesn't know, you can tell the shark's sex by whether or not said shark has claspers (basically shark penises). The shark in the video is a female. Just some fun information. :)
This is the most menacing looking shark I’ve ever seen.
I would have already had a heart attack if I was one of those divers. That is scary no matter what kind of shark it is, you never know when it might decide to take a bit out of you.
Do you know how they act or know much about sharks ? If you think this shark is randomly gonna take a bite out of you than it doesn't seem so, don't jump to a conclusion and do some research instead. Sharks generally don't even hunt humans and as far as we know to our current knowledge "dislike" eating humans, case in point all shark attacks usually leave the body once bitten. Most likely shows they don't like eating humans at all and simply were provoked or instigated in a way that caused the attack, like self defense.
She is apparently the most diver friendly shark they have. There are some articles on her. Her name is Wink because of the missing eye.

At first glance I thought it was a one-eyed goblin shark- but they're built differently. This shark has receding gums, and one eye. Quite an aquarium for what's essentially a nursing home. Differently- abled or not, I'd want a cage handy. Even a blind hog can find an acorn. Lol

In all honestly, I really applaud that guy. He looks super uncomfortable and unsettled when the shark got that close, but he definitely did an amazing job staying calm and keeping his composure. Loved this Mall! We were in Dubai a few years ago and stayed on the Mall. It’s amazing, the mall has this giant aquarium in the middle if it. We saw divers in the tank while we were there.💦

Sand Tiger shark. Harmless, slow moving, and breathing normally. It’s experienced recent injuries, is infected and diseased thus it’s spooky appearance with the jaw dislocated. No arched back and they do extremely well in aquariums. Slow to breed and endangered.

What makes it worse is that the shark is actually cute. But when he stares face to face with that diver, I see it viciously attacking him with overwhelming force and a blood cloud that slowly rises to the surface.

Sand tigers don’t need much room as they are ambush predators and can filter water through their gills with their mouth rather than having to swim. The shark has a better chance in captivity given its disabilities so let’s be quiet next time.

Anyone else think this was an animatronic at a theme park when they first saw it. I didn't realise it was a real shark looked huge in the thumbnail. When i first saw it it looked like one of the sharks from Deep Blue Sea the animatronic ones not the crappy CGI.

I went there to do scuba diving last December and i told one of the divers working there what happen to that shark and they told me his now in a marine medical care and his recovering very well and he will be back to the aquarium or release him back to the ocean

Sharks don't routinely open and close it's mouth like that and any large shark would be costly on any standard aquarium let alone a third world country one. This most certainly is fake and the guy filming was had that's all there is to it. It wasn't even corralling it's prey or actively hunting.bit was on a motor and a track the teeth it had wasn't even correct for a bull shark or any other large breed shark.

I think its upper jaw is extended out from its lip for an unknown reason. Sharks look like him generally when they do that --- it's only when they're about to take a bite of something. You see his exact same species pass him in the upper right corner at 2:17 .
He is also missing his right eyeball, poor thingy.

@@bryprouty7004 NO THEY ARE NOT !. The upper and lower jaw are broken out. A Sand Tiger Sharks head is way flatter. This is caused by catching or moving the female. And im diving with Sand Tiger Sharks for 4 years now at the coast of italy.
The sand tiger is often wrongly associated with being vicious or deadly, due to its relatively large size and sharp, protruding teeth that point outward from its jaws; however, these sharks are quite docile, and are not a threat to humans. Their mouths are not large enough to cause a human fatality.
Believe me I love and respect wildlife.... and I especially marine life ... but this is actually so ominous and scary . I'd die of fear... looks like one of the guys was definitely getting scared of how close the shark was. Can't say I blame him

I dove this exact aquarium twice this week. They are pretty docile and chill in real life

Even a docile shark I couldn’t do it I would be scared shitless. I can’t even have a docile boa constrictor around my neck that a zookeeper says it’s OK. Because that’s how much that freaks me out. So I’ll be right in front of a shark even though they say it’s safe is just like that but that much worse
I dived with two tiger sharks in Moscow oceanarium, but it wasn't nearly as close as in the video (they were above me 3-4 metres). Incredible experience!

Fun fact: the shark is doing that as a breathing method. some sharks have to keep swimming to breathe. and some can stay in one place, opening and closing their mouths and gills.

Every living creature can breathe. It just different but same process.

That shark has been altered. I study sharks for a living and the way it’s breathing and slow movements indicate stress and other issues and the jaw jutting out like that is not natural .
Are you a marine biologist? What is happening to the poor guy? It looks as if he's struggling to "breathe." Is it related to the salinity of the water?
Mark Donovan I’m in college studying. I have been I a couple of dives. From what I can tell there is severe labored breathing. Shark usually gape or open and close there mouths as a threat posture or obviously when eating. It moved way to slow even to slow for a sand tiger shark. It could be the water salenity. Keeping shark is very difficult they require the absolute correct salt water ratio. They also require a ton of room to swim.
@@plop199 thanks for the answer, man that is terrible news. I hope the big guy isn't in agony and that he doesn't have to suffer too much longer. Furthermore I hope that the aquarium staff are monitoring this shark otherwise that would say a lot about their organization and the treatment of these captive animals.

This is quite different from the sand tiger sharks I know.
In Japan, sand tiger sharks are known (by some) as sharks that attack human.
The ISAF has recorded few unprovoked attacks and no fatalities.

Sharks die quickly in tanks, this shark is in the process of dying. There's no danger here except for the shark.
Sand Tigers do fine in aquariums. They don't even roam far in the wild. They find a reef or wreck they feel safe around and stick close to it. A Sand Tiger isn't a pelagic fish like the Great White is so it doesn't have to keep constantly moving around at constant speed to survive. The reason the Sand Tiger is the number one large aquarium shark is because the really DO WELL in aquariums. They are fairly docile and easy to care for too. This one appears to have suffered a injury (or maybe is REALLY old) so it probably wouldn't even survive in the wild.
