Today (a lot of) Brits go to vote with all kinds of elections happening across the country. Some of the most important elections happening are the local elections in England where new local councillors will be selected. So in this video we discuss what local councillors actually do, why this matter and if the Conservatives are going to win big today.

Local elections: if the party does well, they say it's an endorsement of national policies and leadership. If they do badly, they say it's due to local issues.
Edit: to be fair to Kier Starmer, he just took responsibility 😂
Yep. Except revered over here.

Note that today the local ellections are happening in England, not across the UK, and the two tierd system you described is, again, an Englissh system, not a UK-wide system. In Scotland, for instance, things work a bit differently, as local government is not a reserved matter and sits with Holyrood. So it would have been better to clarify at the start that this information only applies to England, as the script and graphics implied it was UK-wide.
Because the English call Britain "England".

@@feelsbradman6793 It's funny though, I was having a conversation last night with one of my friends who is English but living in Scotland.
Both of us agreed that far too often what it means to be British is conflated with English (although this tends to be more with people from other countries who don't understand the unique relationship that the UK nations have).
However, as someone from Scotland, I know what it means to be Scottish, but honestly I don't know what it means to be British because to me I associate Britishness with stereotypes of the south of England, and everything about me is Scottish (the only exception being my passport).
I would never really say that I’m British, and that probably comes from the strong Scottish identity that I feel.

@@giansideros I'm not a Tory. I'm a non-tribal centre-left type who is bored of endless Tory governments and wants to know how to stop them. The first step to doing that is to understand what makes Tory voters tick, only then can we think about how to appeal to them.

It's Mccarthyist and hysterical the fervor of which people bandy about cultural Marxist and to imagine that a huge section of this country either willfully or taciy destroy it from within like some kind of dangerous cult.
If this minority of Tory voters genuinely believe these things then it's not even the fault of opportunistic demagogues who sow this rhetoric, it's the sin of our citizenry for readily accepting these narratives unquestioningly.
I commend the Conservatives and their bankrollers for their artifice as they are playing politics well, at least they coalesce their minority of voters under their single brand into a viable strategy, however underhanded and nefarious.
However Labour the second horse in this race hasn't consolidated the remainder, the lib dems have no raison d'etre as do the greens, both are glorified hobby parlour club parties who pretend and LARP about state management but really only exist as superfluous ways of spoiling one's ballot.

They can both rot
Voting is pointless
Holy shit Labor got destroyed. Can anyone from the UK give some impressions on why?
In my opinion it's because they no longer share the ethos or culture of the working class - which has been their traditional voting base.
You may argue their economical policies are better for them, but in terms of culture they are incredibly politically correct, ″woke″, far left in some ways, support movements such as BLM, are seen to be anti-Brexit and culturally on these issues and more have aligned themselves with the elitest, rich class and elitist mega corporations who all don't represent the working class.
You can say what you want about these things, but many in the working class and wider society don't support these cultural and social positions.
On top of that the government is seen to be doing a good job with the pandemic, with Labour not providing a different enough opposition to them - meaning they are in many ways like the Conservative Party right now. This means there isn't a good enough reason for many to actively vote for them.
@@Alto53 Thanks! It's London and Manchester vs everywhere else I suppose.
I do see Labor gaining grounds in Wales though, right? What's different there?
@@HungTran-gz5emyeah it's the urban areas that are more culturally aligned with the Labour party vs the rest of England.
Wales is traditionally Labour and their image of being the working class party still is intact over there. The Conservatives are by far more unpopular in Wales.
It's important to note though that the Welsh Labour party are different to the English Labour party as they have full autonomy on policy that the Welsh government can control through devolution. This means that the Welsh people may see the Labour party in Wales as a little bit different to the English one lead by Starmer. Though, most of it is the fact that Wales is a Labour heartland.
Further, the Welsh Labour government have been seen to be doing a good job concerning the pandemic in Wales too by many. It must also not be forgotten that there is a independence movement in Wales like Scotland which affects voting patterns as well.
Nevertheless, this was a decent result for the Welsh Conservatives as they increased their constituency vote share by 5% and regional vote share by 6%, giving them 5 more seats than the previous election with 16 seats in the Senedd and becoming the official opposition party. Though the Conservatives didn't gain from Labour.
So, you could say Wales did kind of follow the national trend in much smaller way in terms of Conservative success.

Couldn't agree more. People really do love tyranny. It's disgusting and will drag us decent people down with them!
Couldn't be prouder of the UK, they've resoundingly rejected Marxism and BLM kneeling woke stupidity twice in a row. We're witnessing the death of the British left and I'm loving every minute of it.
@@TheAmericanPrometheus Not the British left my friend. They've been a crappy imitation of the American left for a while. And I never would have joined Labour if I knew they'd just be attempting to map American race relations onto a country that never had America's history of importing black slaves. I voted against them for the first time this election, and I won't be sad to see them go.
@@JontyLevine fair point.
@@JontyLevine My hope for the UK is Labour gets wiped out and then Tories with what is frankly a broad and unwieldy base only held together by its disdain for Labour will collapse into two new parties that both have a love of their country's history, culture and traditions, but on economic issues one is more Market Liberal like the Tories traditionally have been and the other focuses on Economic Security like Labour used to. Two parties free of all this woke nonsense and the fate of Labour a reminder of what happens when you actively hate your country and it's people.
Do you have a video on the West Yorkshire mayoral election
As an American, I am not eligible. Still I wish Britain well.
Unfortunately here in UK people love evil .
My household all voted earlier today 😊
I do not know who you voted for, but what I want to congratulate you for voting

I do wish that this video came out a day earlier!! I'd already been out and voted before this video was put out. Nevermind though, really great video
can't wait for the results to start pouring in..
If you support Labour looks like a bad night so far.... Hartlepool went Tory

I’m a labour candidate in one of the local elections and can see from canvassing and social media advertising that labour will struggle this year
A shame.
That you!re wasting time with Labour, not that they’re going to struggle.
Still... not much choice out there atm anyway, huh?
Tories and Boris Johnson is just seen by the electorate as better and superior
Anish my county is the only one to ever go bankrupt (it’s happened twice) both under tories. People are against labour due to the national party rather than the policy’s (the tories haven’t even given any policy’s)
@@nnspenaz2343 the exactly. Ppl think labour is full of woke thickos and sixth formers not "serious statesmen and businessmen" who can lead the country. They love Boris, sunak, Matt Hancock etc. They think the Tories and clever and intelligent who can make Britain great again
@@nnspenaz2343 if u ask ppl what policy do you like from the Tories, they'll say brexit. People are genuinely really enthused by brexit. They also say Boris vaccine rollout has been great and of labour had been in power the vaccine rollout wouldn't have been as good (this may be true idk)
Have you ever noticed that this guy can't say "sixth"? I can't unhear it. Every time: Sikth.
5:11 and 5:33, for some reason you put the Green party 4th in the order, but they were only 5th in nuber of councillors (although talked about 4th) and 6th in number of total councils. I find it strange (possible bias) that you did that, and obviously it wasn't on accident since when listing number of councils you put them out of order.
Possibly because the yellow colours are too similar and makes the graphic less aesthetically pleasing when together. But I thought the same thing when watching too.
Sadly too few people realise the vaccine roll out is succesfull because it's run by the NHS and not the government, unlike the "NHS Track & Trace" which wasn't run by the NHS and failed. There needs to be a big push to deligitimise the credit the government is taking for the vaccine rollout!
Though worth mentioning for-balance that all of the vaccines the NHS are currently giving-out were developed by private-companies, and without them the NHS would have nothing to offer... so NHS can't be given full-credit, either.
sadly not eu supporters won't accept the truth that the vaccine roll out was due to great leadership by Boris. there needs to be a big push to stop boris haters like you telling lies
@@dftfire The credit is all Boris.
@@jonathanhammerton9418 Boris also doesn't own all the private pharmaceutical companies so no, not all credit can go his-way either
@@dftfire Boris made the deal and all the credit goes to him dumbo
Go out and vote if you're eligible! It's a privilige many people died for and envy you for.
eu supporters envy UK voters
@@jonathanhammerton9418 Believe me we definitely don't
@@cloodberst oh yes you do, the eu has been destroyed by brexit
@@jonathanhammerton9418 you're deluded if you actually think that 😂 we haven't affected at all. Can't say the same for the UK though!
@@cloodberst the eu has been destroyed by brexit, Brexit has benefited the uK greatly, can't say the same for the corrupt eu though! hahahahaha
the eu is finished now ahahhahahah
There are two main factors in local, devolved, mayoral and Commissioners elections.
One: fir all parties to take a live pulse of their support and use it in planning for future elections and possible referendums.
Two: to select who honestly outside of brexit, a done deal people who hold true power. Local representation holds a larger per capita legistlative impact at least in the US and Canada. And I'm guessing the UK is little different. The big one's im watching tonight is the hollyrood and London mayoral elections as the hollyrood elections if a snp landslide will give Backford and Sturgeon a mandate for an independence referendum.
Being from the US it’s actually kinda shocking how different some political systems can work despite cultural similarities.
