      Well, I have thought about this and maybe the non-user-friendly UI comes from it not being so wide spread. It doesn't seem like a cheap integration system so not so many people are going for it, of course.
      It's basically tech in its youth, where there are lots of hits and misses which can only be solved by spreading it to lots and lots of people who can give feedback about any missing features.

      @@completehomeelectronix4325 Remote controls are stored in my cabinet it's not like they are disabled. And almost everyone has a smart phone so that would be weird planning around that senereo. I actually have found that ppl who visit my home have fun casting the next song/video from phones sort of let's the guest build up a party playlist. These complicated hubs/controls actually muddy up the user experience. That's why I believe the assistants with companion apps when necessary give the best experience at the moment.

    This whole system is so redundant in so many ways it’s ridiculous. I can do everything that this home is setup to do with less than half the devices that they’re using here. Also telling Alexa to tell “home butler” is plain inefficient. You can integrate this is a much smarter way. Maybe you need to hire someone who knows IOT a little better.
    Decent try at home automation tho.

    I absolutely love Home Assistant. Brings every platforms in one place. I have my smart TVs, denon receiver, Sony soundbar, chromecasts, smartthings lights, sensors and thermostats, ADT alarm, esp8622 with rgb led strips etc etc etc all centralized through Home Assistant. I can ask either google homes or siri to control stuff, because Home Assistant bridges it all. Finally, the smart home isn't the home you control remotely from one app. The smart home is the home that behaves around you, without you telling it to do so. Obviously Home Assistant does this well too! By the way, its free and open source, and a $35 raspberry pi is enough to get started...

      @@iiikrowniii keep in mind the average home owner (or integrator for that matter) cant code and the money they would save in material they would pay for in coding or learning to. And no knock against open source, but there is no guarantee of support or funding for the platforms, so they could be gone tomorrow. For someone like you who is clearly talented, and i mean that with the utmost respect, the continuous/meticulous tinkering is probably just as fun as it is rewarding. Btw, all that you mentioned can be done with these systems as many support the same zwave/zigbee protocols and devices. Dont forget this system also includes surround and video processing equipment that cant be fully replicated open source. I dont use RTI, but just from the UI i can tell there are things this video doesnt go into:); its a very understated video

    • @completehomeelectronix4325
      @completehomeelectronix4325 6 лет назад +3

      I agree and wish they would display mor what the system can do...unfortunately, tablet and voice control are whats popular right now.
      I don't use RTI, but have seen it in homes and businesses, and have only seen whats in this series for this home, so I can only tell what is possible. From what you said earlier, I gather you are using NFC tags, Zwave devices and possibly IFTTT or something similar. I install and work with Total Control, which can integrate all those things. For example, at my home I have an 8x8 4k matrix feeding Roku, PS4, Xbox, and 2 Comcast boxes. I have lighting and shade control via Lutron and Casatunes feeds audio to 4 stereo zones and my backyard. With Total Control, I can pick up a remote, ipad, or use voice control to control everything. Or, depending on which phone walks into a room. what state the room is in (the system knows if the tv is on and watching Comcast, listening to music or off), and the time of day (the system has an astrological clock) 1 of a few different macros will run. For instance, if I walk into the front door at 6 pm and the living room is off, the tv will turn onto my favorite ch, the lights adjust accordingly, and the remote will display my favorites list. If my wife walks into the same scenario, the system will set up the room for her. We also have occupancy sensors from Lutron that control our lighting. If I get up in the middle of the night for a drink of water, the system notices me in the hall and begins to slowly ramp the lights to a low level a second sensor is in place and detects whether I am heading to the kitchen or stairs and continues a path in that direction. When the sensors detect there I am no longer in the room, they ramp the lights back down and off. With Casatunes and Total Control, I can build playlist in Spotify (nothing new) and then have those playlist play on special dates. So I created a playlist of songs from different points of my wife and my relationship and had it play the morning of our anniversary. We use geofencing to turn set our AC, make sure the garage door is open/closed create paths of light. if someone rings my door bell, the display on the remote will flip over to the image from the front door camera. If its going to rain, my system bypasses my sprinklers programming so they wont run in the rain. All of this without me having to touch a button...the next step is Terminators, or machine learning as its called now
      But I will say, that open source solutions like Rasberry PI and users drive the innovation of the genre. CI platforms for the most part have long focused on control and pushed "works with your ipad" or "now you only need 1 remote". It was the rise of IOT devices (ironically MS embedded and Linux had more to do with that than either Android, Siri or Alexa) that paved the way for automation. CI lines like RTI, C4, Total Control offer a polish and stability open sourced projects cant (i know that's a generalization) The fact they innovate slower is by design, as they should be easy for any and everyone to use. They also have more control over AV gear typically than an other IOT platforms as that's where they started.

      I agree with +Seth Weiss, Ubiquiti products are great still a fan with there software too. You can also look into adding another phone SIM card to ur wireless phone plan and purchase a WiFi router capable of just plugging in the new SIM card and setting up to run in the house... way better performance gains and a lot more fluid than a cellular pod at mobile provider. You can get creative and get a sim from a prepaid plan too end then just pay monthly or yearly depending on how much data you already use.

    nice try, but nope.
    no remote? what is the ipad then? this has been done since tablets came out, using them as "one remote to rule them all". and its a WORSE remote.
    all the rest is just hacked. "Alexa, tell home butler to tell XY..." sure, common. Clunky, and nobody will do this outside of the first week. they will throw the ipad on the ground and want their remotes back.
    this is for hipsters that are never at home and use their homes as showcase, or the poor wife has to live in this box and go crazy on the unusable interface.
    no, its not for nerds, nerds would build their own clunky system on arduino and stuff.
    this is, of course, not the future, its an example of our failures with locked in systems and maybe, maybe a lesson on what we have to overcome.

    I'm curious why a Roku was used instead of a Chromecast? Chromecast's a literally designed to not have a remote, using your phone/tablet to control everything. The only downside I see is you might need to switch the iPad for an Android tablet, and possibly switching from an Echo to Google Home. Both these problems may not actually exist, but would probably be better for the system anyway.

      Roku's api allows for powerful control from control systems where chromecast doesnt. You can call specific apps from a remote control and, despite what Grant said, play the next episode via voice. You can use the RTI (or any other) system to control volume, input selection and lighting while also controlling the Roku...chromecast is not controllable from remotes etc. Chromecast is great inside an Android ecosphere, but not so much outside of that

This would especially be helpful for the more elderly, who aren't as keen to pick up on these tech savvy toys in one foul swoop

Having a cabinet full of equipment in the living room is analog to the 50's and 60's when computers took up entire rooms. The center of everything still looks like it will be the smartphone, connecting to screens and speakers as services. Each company selling wireless speakers today is really selling the ecosystem, not just speakers. Perhaps this series should be called "The most technical home we can think of today".

It's just dumbing down the entire system, and removing flexibility. Those buttons have functions which are no longer available to me. Later on he mentions that he doesn't want to redo what sonos has already redone, and thus makes the sonos button available - why redo what the tv manufactures have already done, and remove the tv remote?
    i'd feel like i have less control of my tech than ever before.

      There are back end security than can help prevent hackers accessing a home (Cujo for example). Many of the products have secure sign in. The CI probably used enterprise network gear which adds security. Not sure if any of that is used here but there are defenses available. Worse case, this home is only more hackable than an average home because of the number of devices in it. In reality, there is tighter network security here

    A lot of this can be achieved with an Apple TV and some AirPlay 2 enabled speakers. As long as you are bought into the ecosystem, it would also give you a better user experience. For example, just about all the major video and audio streaming services, including news, podcast, and radio services have apps on the App Store. A large majority run on the Apple TV. Then, using AirPlay 2 to Sonos speakers and a HomePod or two will handle the audio. It will also have multi-room support. Furthermore, if you have an iPad or iPhone in addition to the Apple TV, Siri will allow handoff between devices, allowing you to control everything from any of your devices. Lastly, with the upcoming Siri Shortcuts, you will be able to create all kinds of macros to automate what you want from there.
    It is not perfect, but it is likely to cost you less, it is more user customisable and I believe might give you a better user experience. The tradeoff would be the lack of Alexa support. That being said, if you shop smart, there is a whole lot of HomeKit enabled smart home tech that would do the job perfectly fine. People complain about Siri, but the truth is that she is great at getting things done within the ecosystem and supported APIs. She is not good at general knowledge or trivia like questions. If you want that, Google is happy to provide you the Google Assistant app for all your iThings.

    I use a Roku Ultra and Chromecast for my smart home TV setup. I only need a tiny remote for Roku and my phone for Chromecast. My Optical Audio out goes to Sonos Playbar and is grouped with 2 Play 1's (someday the sub as well). That iPad looks awful for a UI to use such simple devices. In my next house, I am going to buy a simple 6 zone AMP with RCA inputs and use a few Chromecast audios to cast music to any room in the home. Super affordable and my phone can control all of it.

    A touchscreen to control home media is a great option. As long as you don't use it as a remote, of course..
    Nobody found a good solution that mimics the tactile feel for buttons on a touchscreen for when being used to control a screen that is different than the one that is in your view. Several laptop manufacturers tried but it still sucks.
    What they should have done is mirror the tv screen to the iPad as soon as you want to control the TV and thus making the iPad a touchscreen TV experience. Also a very sturdy height and angle adjustable stand for the TV's room iPad is necessary so you don't have to hold it with your hands while you try and type with it.

    • @JeandrePetzer
      @JeandrePetzer 6 лет назад

      I said the exact same thing about mirroring. The option is literally right in his face; Why does he need to press on a button on a simulated remote, to go left and down, than if he could just press on the option he wants. I think honestly for something like a roku (never had one but im aware of them), I'd prefer an actual remote.

    I'm a fan of a remote control. Even the Apple TV remote is better than that iPad thingy. That said. Begin with redesigning the interface completely and maybe there might be room for quite big improvements for better usability. And even better, also design new hardware that sits a lot better in the hand than an iPad.

    RIP, Grant Imahara. I like some of the features here, but I already feel like Alexa already does a lot of this same stuff combined with a few outlets and my smart tv. And there are a few things I don't see myself ever having... like smart locks. Sure, any lock can be picked... but I prefer not to have a lock that can be picked from Russia or China while they're on their desktop.

    Here's the thing: if your internet goes out you cannot use any of this stuff. It messes with your mind and you feel like you've slipped into the dark ages. My wifi went out fir 5 mos and I had my lights connected to it and my music. My appletv didn't work--obviously. When I went back to simply turning my lights on with a switch and using a wireless speaker again I was like "What just happened?" I honestly forgot tv is actually free in this country. I did spend a lot of time at Starbucks for wifi.
