What devices would you feel comfortable using to secure your home of the future?
I want a device that can sense me and open the door when I would be near the door.
Shotgun no tech.
I wouldn't mind being voice recorded (as i have nothing to hide) but tracking my history on my devices or recording me is unacceptable as it puts me in danger etc.
if an hacked gets that info They know how the look like and Possibly could know where i live Which,is and invasion of privacy and security
I just disagree with the lady on the point that companies are taking steps to protect us consumers. Companies are not doing enough to protect the people. There is a genuine threat and fear to consumers that there information is not safe. Also, all the new tech which have computer technology need to have some kind of regulation of protection which should be installed in it.
I agree
Please, set up a hackathon where people may try to breach your house!! I would love to see the results
Wout b I can only imagine it being an IRL event, so hundreds of people just crowd the house with laptops.
Nope, if the house uses wifi Hackers could breach any where
You would have someone break into their network through wifi from 2 miles away
Hackers wont bother to demonstrate a hackathon if there are no bounty on it.
Just attack the router before trying the doors
theif: *yelling thru open window* alexa unlock the front door
😂😂😂
You didn't really cover how you are securing the house
Because they didn't secure it.
they forgot one part: get a dog.
+9razzler9 A dog doesn't help when the dog is not at home.
@@Yowzoe actually burglars are less likely to break into a house with a dog sign or is known it has dogs, regardless of whether the dogs are at the house or not
@@Yowzoe Nearly everyone keeps their dogs outside 24/7.
Any one else think that this is still one of the best series the Verge ever did?
I want to be completely secured from all sides
>builds a house with full glass windows and doors
"I want to be completely secured from all sided"
*begins existing*
Wow existing is a sin in 2018
Reminds me of the "Super Secure control room" in the movie The Bourne Identity. It literally had a huge glass wall next to a busy street, and on ground floor lol
From the intro I wanted to post "Aaand then you get hacked through your printer wifi" and then you said that...
Sinom When "doxing your toaster" becomes real.
Worst way to get hacked lol
And then facebook gives all your data away for free.
* You give all your data away to Facebook for free.
@@LongerThanAverageUsername replace "for free" with "to sell"
Facebook? WTF is that?
Who even uses Facebook? And you're technically giving them all your info and sharing on the way you live with everyone.
When Grant said that we’ve seen how they’re securing the house, I actually asked out loud “Did we?” There were concepts discussed, but no real security solutions.
This is the biggest concern for most of my clients, really wished they would have gone into actual products they use or solutions they use to protect those privacy issues.
As a security professional, i thoroughly enjoyed this video. Excited to see future episodes!
RIP grant, true legend of the game
this is a refreshingly good video. Going into this I thought it would be glorifying smart homes but I'm really glad they're showing all the risks, vulnerabilities, and privacy violations that come with this. Well done by the Verge
I like these episodes but it doesn’t say what tech was used or how they are securing the house. For is it in a article somewhere?
They just had to add in the really non practical laser light projecting keyboard that you can now get for around 20$ and the vacume drone that costs like $10
Fascinating. Wishing you a beautiful day x)
Wow Im loving this series... love the quality of it. Cant wait to see more next week! 😊👍
Hj
Love the synth sounds for the futuristic theme lol.
We need more content like this.
Thanks for going into so much detail with each episode, really appreciated
rip Imahara. You deserved a much longer life.
You dont own alexa, siri, or even google based speakers yet you have a phone (ios/android) that always listening to you 24/7. As much as you think your data is private, think again.
always on mic is not enabled by default so it wouldn’t even be possible (iOS)
Bloom well that is what you see....its written disabled.....but is it?
what if it actually is always enabled(but shows disabled) and data is sent to a cloud ones the user goes online?
isn't that also possible to program?
P.S maybe I'm just being paranoid xD
Omar Radee yea it would be possible but you would notice it your battery draining faster and your mobile data being used up also I’m pretty sure by now someone would’ve found out about it by monitoring the network traffic sent or by looking at background processes just like always on camera spying on you would eat up your battery and data in minutes
I trust that an iOS device isn't always listening to me 24/7 unless I've given the OS or an app permission to do so.
I do NOT trust Android to do the same.
iOS and Apple generally goes to great lengths to protect your privacy. Listening / Recording / Storing are three vastly different things, too. Even if you set your iOS device to "Listen" 24/7 it doesn't always record, but rather waits and listens for triggers. If it hears a trigger, it may start recording. To make this simpler I'm going to include in "Recording" that it's also sharing it with Apple servers that might then convert that to text, and actionable commands for Siri. In this case it is being transmitted, but it is encrypted end-to-end and neither anyone at Apple, nor do any third party companies ever get access to that information. More on this later. Lastly Storing... I don't believe iOS/Apple stores any of your voice recordings for longer than it takes to process and send it back. If I am wrong about this, that data would still be stored and encrypted behind *your* personal encryption keys, be it your passcode or your Apple ID password. Likely behind two factor authentication too.
Finally the biggest, most important point, is that Apple *does not sell your information* or make money off of it in any way. There's some level of data collection that happens as far as location services, but this is done with differential privacy measures that make it impossible to discover any one persons contributions to this data pool or learn anything about them. It just passes on data like "At this location, connected to this cell tower, I saw these WiFi and Bluetooth networks in this direction with this signal strength" and that's about it.
Right now Apple is the only major tech company that cares about your privacy and seeks to sell products without selling customer data.
Can you do a segment on companies with products that do not watch, listen or collect data?
Randy Connare most don’t but it would be a great idea
you can find out what they have on you thanks to the GDPR (considering where you are)
"Hey wiretap, here's my entire schedule and typical buying habits"
I have enjoyed this series
When it comes to home network there are a few things:
First of all, one of the top antivirus companies bitdefender has created the box product that not only secures those devices like computers phones and tablets, but it scans all network activity from all devices connected to the internet and protects them from malware. Really good product for this kind of situation.
I'm curious to see what you do for heating and cooling the home.
My neighbour was robbed two weeks ago. They cut his telephone lines and broadband at the street, knocking out all his security systems. Are there any devices that continue to work if your WiFi is knocked-out? It took a pair of pliers to disable everything...
The best home security is a little old fashioned - get two dogs. Great security 24/7 plus they are good companions.
SimpliSafe is a great one.
Get a UPS, but you will have to pay for cellular network, and most of the time it is slow.
Don't use wifi for security cameras (or anything important) at all ever.
Just hire 12 bodyguards around the clock
I would use a PLC with a bunch of relays and switches, a Raspberry with Node-Red installed and maybe Home-Assistant to connect with Virtual Assistants! Already made a project in high school that won the 3rd place in a contest!!!
Surprised The Verge didn't take the time to dust off the Alexa and then do a super close up shot lol
"It just makes that car less of a target of opportunity. There is, however, another source-it's occupants." (3:07) I thought he was going to show us how to not get kidnapped. Oof.
good show
I thought for sure you were going to mention a product like Bitdefender Box to protect your IoT devices in your house, but I was again disappointed when nothing like that was mentioned.
@@iMixMaSteR1 really no good? damn just bought a sub - what would you recommend
a really good firewall
you havent talked much about the open automation community yet grant
What about storage? I believe that exists a nas with 80 TB steam and playstation ip for quicker updates also 10Gb internet con and ssd's for cashing internet payments and etc. Right?
*I cant take this seriously until you get rid of that Ford pickup...*
What's wrong? The Ford pickup looks strong and beefy.
They're making too many $'s off of it just sitting there to get rid of it
There will still be a need for pickup trucks in the future. Let's not forget there are carpenters, contractors, electricians, and many other professions that rely on vehicles like this.
Without the truck there's no way that the series would happen cause Ford's sponsoring this
ironically the video is sponsored by Ford, they believe the home of the future comes with a diesel truck.
I personally go the route of a seperate wifi network for sensors, and stuff that I'm not to worried about. A wired network for critcal stuff. With neither touching the internet. Then a normal home network for my computers and not smart home stuff.
Is there any video of the construction of the house?
What was the device for the projection on the wall with motion sensing to control?
I want this house !
Rip Grant Imihara
First step is to use only Open Source devices, with Open Source software and hardware. Then if the need exists to use a remote service and can't be self hosted, use only a completely transparent service, that tells you everything it's recording and why, and to whom it gives access to that data and why.
Too much windows ! . Feels like no privacy from outdoors
Best way to protect my data is not having data at all.
Whatever you think about data as business, there should be a transfer of who owns your data, you yourself that is. And by so you should be able to choose complete privacy or if you want to share. And if you share YOU yourself should be the benefit of the revenue this data renders.
Did they describe a way of protecting the devices? Did I miss that segment?
Once again, I've yet to be convinced I need cameras all around my house with talking speakers and mood lighting.
A ceiling fan is also a computer. Right...
Apple: what’s a computer?
This video set my Echo off at least 5 times lol
Around 3:33, why is there an Echo on the toilet?
Think about it
Hey Alexa... Flush the toilet. What has humanity become?
You gotta spy on that toilet behaviours
Let's just be simple about it, it's so that you can listen to music while showering or news while going about your bathroom routine.
poor Echo.. It must bare the smell and the disturbing voice of someone's pooping..
Which video camera did you use in this video?
I got a question, how much did this house cost to make I may try building one for myself
I use Apple HomeKit devices because they are secure from the get go.
Home of the future with that Monster of a Car!
What security cameras is he using? I'm looking to buy new ones.
what are you going to do with the house after this series ends?
This isn't there home, they were authorized by the owner to film there.
Sees the thumbnail: "Is that Grant Imahara?"
Clicks the video: "Yep, it's Grant Imahara." :)
what a rollercoaster of emotion
Putting a Ford pickup in front of that house is like having a Model 3 in front of a barn...
Ibliss
It’s not really that uncommon. I live next to a very rich neighborhood in Illinois and I see a bunch of Ford pickups parked on the driveway of these million dollar homes.
Ford’s newer trucks are going for that luxury look so maybe that’s why there are more wealthy people buying it.
This home is also in TX. 😂
what song was that in the intro? would love to know
What is that touchscreen projector thing that was being used?
I use Google products like the Pixelbook, Pixel XL, Google Home mini, a Vizio tv with built tin chromecast and the Nest Security System.
I won't need any device, because I am not allowed to install any of them (apart from the printer maybe). Thats because I rent a flat in switzerland like more than 50% of people do.
So that could be a tricky problem to solve for companies.
The front door has a smart lock.. But made of glass you can break using pretty much anything
Meizu 16th Review, please.
4:36 In-camera or screen replace?
Would using multiple subnets work or do all the devices need to be on the same network?
They are all connected to the Hub of the house with wires check other episodes
So Medeco Locks are being used?
Any idea what the pendant lights at 2:06 are?
Secure from any intruders... except google.
all hail google.
How about motorised curtains?
What does it cost to build a smart home like this?
A sample of cars that could have been used for sponsorship....2018 BMW i3s, 2018 Nissan Leaf, 2019 Audi E-Tron Quattro, 2019 Jaguar I-Pace, 2019 Kia Niro EV, 2019 Chevy Bolt EV, a FIAT 500E, a Hyundai Ioniq Electric, a Kia Soul EV, a Smart Fortwo EV, a Tesla Model 3, a Tesla Model S, a Tesla Model X 100D, a Volkswagen e-Golf
Alexa in bathroom: huh what did u say?
User: I.. did not umm ehh .. say anything wtf alexa stop listening to me!
I love how he's worried about security, but having a carport lets everyone know if he's home or not... and he's in Texas and doesn't talk about having a gun safe or anything?
Have you ever thought about what would happen when there was a power outage?
This video had zero information on what was actually done to secure these smart devices. :/
SOLUTION: Autonomous homes. Homes that have a server built-in to the homes, therefore controlled by the homeowner.
How do I get this
Is this a wired or wireless automation??
Auto fogger if a break in occurs bullet proof windows there's endless possible upgrades
they automated door lock has more problem that printer ,if it was wifi connection
Amen no Alexa or Google home for me.
Love tech. But tying it to home utilities and functions is just terrifying and seems unnecessary considering IOT just increases risks of being tracked, recorded and hacked for $$
Intro song?
i think my celling fan has a virus. It's trying to chop my head off when I wake up on the top of my bunk bed
I want the SARAH house from Eureka.
Then I'' have B.R.A.D as the security system.
TRUE THAT. That's what I almost think of my future house. Still many things need to be upgrading...
Could you atleast list the items we see in the videos. Tech only is enough.
What’s the holographic keyboard? Is that an actual on-the-market product?
That electricity bill though...
Watch the other episodes. The kWh usage isn't bad honestly
Most modern devices and appliances are pretty power efficient.
I'm guessing a big chunk of the power comes from renewable sources.
Enkryptron appart from huge amount of gas that ford "F-the-earth-150" uses
Offset by solar panels. Watch earlier episodes
0:07 Geez, I only asked when the house warming is ;-D
5:39 Agreed
We didn't actually get to see any security measures so no, we didn't get to see how you secured zour home of the future... nontheless you've raised some interesting issues which I hope will turn up again and again when you promote the devices that are affected by those issues. This is why it's problematic to do a paid promotion while trying to do journalism...
RIP Grant :(
7:10 Tf a ball mouse xD
Don't worry. Your data is safely stored in the cloud, free of charge.
I like to know how is the cost of your house ?!
We get it, you got a great sponsorship contract from Ford. But it would be so much better if there was a parked Tesla or some other electrical car.
Then the autopilot would drive through the front door!
I have 20 armed bodyguards patrolling my house constantly and satellite monitoring.
Yer same... also have added a billion dollar space laser so if anybody tries to enter my property they get 1 gigawatt of power beamed into their cranium. gezz...
All you need is an ED-209.
THE FRIDGE LOOKS LIKE IT uses A LOT OF ELECTRICITY.
No actual follow up solutions at the end? Really? Like simply even changing the default DNS on your router to filter malicious websites. Applying a newish 3M film on your windows to make them impossible to break & energy efficiency. I applaud the concern for security in the episode, but not enough solutions.
