Great video! I also fell apart at about mile 21 and had to walk/run back - that long road killed me and the heat was tough. Your film brought back all the highs and lows of the day! Thanks
Thanks a lot Nik! It was a tough old run wasn't it! A lot of people in the same boat, I think we should be very pleased with ourselves. Great crowds and entertainment apart from the misery though
Thanks so much Lee. I really appreciate that. Very glad I didn't bail now and of course now as the days go by I gradually forget the ordeal and start thinking about the next one...
Hi Rich! All things considered, 4:10 is not bad at all. I’ve heard some say that finishing a marathon undertrained can be just as impressive as a pb with proper training, it’s just more painful. On my end, my knee held up all the way through with no problems, and with semi-planned walking breaks all the way through finished in 5 hours 6 minutes. Everything below my hips felt like it had been ran over by a lorry. Also, that one long residential street from 30k onwards was bloody horrible, thought it was endless
Thank you so much! Yes now I've had a couple of days away from it I really do think that was a great time, and actually I was walking about completely normally yesterday, so I can't be in too bad shape. Very very well done to you! So pleased your knee held up, and I hope you're glad you managed it! Yes, I'm sure the passage of time altered significantly after 30K on that race! Well done again
Well done, was tough out there 😅 managed to break 3:30 for the first time but was able to train well for once. Very relatable content and a funny dry humour sir👏 that finish line really was so close but so bloody far away!!
Well done Rich, the heat and the wind made it that much tougher. I ended up adjusting my plan and running to heart rate rather than pace. Finished in 3:45 which I was chuffed with but I think could have been a bit quicker on a cold day. Much more importantly, though, my friends who I was running it with make a fleeting appearance at 11:14 and will no doubt be delighted to be minor characters in the Rich Keeble Cinematic Universe.
Amazing Nick! Well done. Yeah it was very warm and it was also pretty hilly wasn't it. Very pleased your friends could have been part of such an incredible documentary film
Well done Rich! I did look out for you on the day to tell you "I was a big fan of Dales and your wife is Hot" but I didnt see you. That is a great result. Well done to you and Dale. It was really hot and there was a lot of people walking and spilling over and needing medics especially late on. Well done to the volunteers who kept the water going even under such extreme demand. The support was incredible too! That Black guy with the glasses at 17:34 was amazing and really pepped me up when I clearly was a broken man. It was also good to see Norman Cook (Fat Boy Slim) at the lagoon as he listed my spirits enough to put on a sprint waddle for the last 2km. I did the first 15km in 1hr 34m which was bang on form but blisters on both feet and hip flexer issues meant my second half was woeful. 4hr 59m 20s but three hours in to the race I would have bitten your arm off for a sub 5 hour time. Treated myself to Fish & Chips at Bankers Fish & Chip Restaurant. Incredible food. Then waddled back to my car and drove home. I have got a week at home to recover before I head out to Ibiza for the Ibiza Media Maraton (Half Marathon) on 20th April.
hey mate! Sorry didn't get to meet but there was rather a lot of people there! Yeah loads of people were walking, sitting down or getting medical attention. Crowds were amazing as you say! Really got me over the line. Well done to you Paul and thanks for watching again. You deserved the fish and chips by the sounds of it. Don't think I could've driven home to be honest. Good luck in Ibiza!
Well done Rich (and Dale)! I did a marathon earlier this year with having had to stop then reduce mileage and you just cant cheat it, my low point was 35-36km that was a real struggle. I'm hoping my next one feels a bit easier. Great bling!
oof I feel ya! Yeah that was a tough one, and to be honest, I still haven't quite got over it mentally. This is the first time I haven't got one in the diary by now
Well done Rich! Mine went about as badly as expected - fine for the first 16 miles but then started struggling and at about mile 18 the wheels fell off and I had to walk about half of the last 8 miles. Ended up finishing in 5:14:10. Similar situation to my last long run - cardio was fine (HR was firmly in zone 3 except for those bloody hills) but my legs just couldn't take the distance. Got my medal and ticked it off the bucket list though so I'm tentatively happy. And finished injury free if you don't count sunburn.
Thanks Shaun! Ah well you haven't had an ideal time of it have you. Sounds like you've done amazingly well to get through it! You've just run a marathon and that's an amazing achievement!
Hi Rich, loved the video, and a great effort to get round in 4:10 with your limited training. I was doing my first marathon and got round in a net 4:18 taking into consideration an enforced pit-stop, and I also ground to a virtual stop in Hove after 20 miles. A bonus was seeing myself wobbling around near you at 9:39 and 16:45. I spent the last few km saying “I just want this to be over” and Sunday evening planning my second marathon. Cheers, Tim
Haha well done Tim! Great time. You’re a marathoner now! Great that you managed a couple of cameos. I myself have also now partially forgotten the struggle and thinking about the plan for the next one!
Thanks for the shout out. I was looking out for you but clearly I was so intently focused on my pacing job that I was blind to anything else. Well done and 4:10 is very decent considering you only ran about 10 miles in training 😂
haha thanks Stephen, and you're welcome, I did keep an eye out for you in the hope I'd at least be able to shout at you later on, but by the time I noticed you'd overtaken me a few K from the end I was a complete mess! Well done on your excellent pacing job! Hopefully I'll bump into you another time!
Well done! True grit. I was looking all over for you, but didn't see you - was hoping to get a 'double Rich' selfie - inspired by your last Brighton M, I ironed my name onto the shirt, but i couldn't fit Richard, so was also Rich for the day. Best thing I ever did, got so much support from the crowd. Alas, that didn't prevent an implosion at 32km - wobbling nauseous mess - but got it done in a very pleasing 4:24. Good learning-curve - i now understand why they say its a 10km run with a 32km warm-up.
haha oh yeah the last 10K is the second half as well they say... very well done to you though! Shame we didn't get that selfie, but yeah the crowds were great. Thanks for watching!
Congratulations, Rich - amazing time, never mind the relative lack of training, especially considering how many people seemed to want to cross the road in front of you in the first few miles!! I crashed and burned at Brighton marathon in 2021 (the year they accidentally turned it into an ultra marathon), and also detested the Church Road slog. All the best for your next challenge!
Thanks so much Matthew! I know there was a period of loads of people crossing all together, probably realising I was running slow enough for them to get away with it! It's a tough old course to be fair, and it was pretty hot. The course is better than it was in 2022 when I first did it, but still yeah some of it was mentally tough!
Hi Rich , great video , i was there doing my first marathon , i got to mile 16 and then suffered like a dog to finish just over 5 hrs😂, was aiming for 4:20 oh well , nice 'real video ' showing the marathon experience, these people that whizz round in 3 hrs amaze me , your style is very relatable , thank you👍
Well thank you very much! I'm actually really happy with how this vid turned out - it's a nice memory which can also remind me never to repeat this scenario!
I ran my first marathon at this race with the same problems as you .Did not run for six weeks before the marathon with a knee injury. I was hoping for 3.45 before the injury and managed 4.41.Very happy to just finish.
Well done. Your third marathon had a lot in common with my second (Edinburgh) - long coast road, out and back, the scene of my first marathon, training interrupted - and the same result. The sensation that you've got to walk is grim. Well done for keeping going and rallying, even though it clearly felt hard to run to the line. You did it. You'll be back.
Well done, I felt your pain, this will be me on Sunday at Manchester, injury stopped my running in Feb,training out the window but I'll be on the start line ,all I'm looking to do is get to the end 🤣
Oh no not you as well Helen! So many people have had issues with their training it seems. Well very best of luck to you for Sunday. Finishing will be an achievement in itself. Thanks for watching!
Great entertaining video as always Rich! I've always maintained I would never 'do' a marathon. Your little film has now firmly rubber stamped this! The pain of that last bit was there for all to see. Ouch! Great to see Dale's metamorphasis into Oliver Reed is now also fully complete. Keep filming!
Well done for even attempting the distance after your disrupted training. I don't think I've ever finished a marathon and not immediately thought never again. A couple of hours later it's always a different story. Enjoyed the video and may now consider Brighton as an option for next Spring when I get rejected in the ballot for London again!
Thanks very much Ian! Yeah there are certainly some great elements to that course. I wanted to capture as much of that as I could, along with the crushing lows I experienced at the end haha. Already thinking maybe I'll try and do better later in the year...
Well that was weird. I’m half way through this video on my iPad when the family put on Ghosts on the iPlayer on the TV. And next thing I know there’s Rich Keeble on the TV at the same time as I’m watching him on my iPad! Well done on finishing a tough race. I had a similar experience in Edinburgh in 2022. Worst marathon (and worst sunburn) ever.
thank you very much! Ah good luck - are you doing London? My issues in this video were from all sorts of things as a result of the lack of training, so try not to worry too much about "the wall" (easier said than done I know). When I did Manchester last year I didn't hit the wall at all, and never had to stop to walk, so it's certainly possible!
Glad you managed to get your bag out of the barrier 😂, I was that “fan” that saw you at the station. 👋 It was really tough out there and I had some similar struggles towards the end, but a great effort and a very respectable time, especially after that tap incident! 👏
Enjoyed this vlog a lot! You done really well considering! Getting elbowed probably slowed you down in all. The Brighton Marathon was my first marathon and I had to walk during the final third. Tough one but we got it done 🙌🏼
Thanks mate! The elbowed nipple actually hurt quite a lot for a quite a long time but I think I already had plenty of other problems by then! Well done for completing it mate! We should all be very proud!
Great effort, I’m actually on your video in Union Jack t shirt. Brutal course,I faded badly at mile 20 too, but just managed to hit my sub 4 target. Tough day indeed. Keep up the great work.
Well done! U was very stong and fight to finish the race! Sometimes the race not go how to plan , but never give up and finish the race are better then DNF! And all those who say if u walk in a race dont know what they talking about! I was pro runner 20 years ago and I walk in 3 race when I hit the wall hard but I still was a pro runner 😊 from my experiences u should start this race in 6:00-6.10min/km pace u had go stronger in the end and never hit the wall and I think u had run all the way to finish this eace strong! Keep going on! I know u gona run sub 3.10 .. u are a strong runner and have strong head! ❤💪💪
thanks mate - I appreciate that! Yeah in hindsight maybe I should've started slower, but I feel I would have struggled after a point anyway due to the lack of training. I knew this one would be hard... but still nothing prepares you! When I did Manchester last year with a good training block I didn't hit the wall or have to stop at all, so it just depends eh. I think the reason I mentioned the walking thing is that a friend of mine said something to me a few weeks about how you shouldn't walk, and someone said something to Dale as well... and I do strongly disagree with that - you're finishing the distance and that's all that matters! Thanks again
@@TheRichKeeble felt pretty good until about 26km when the camber on the road seemed to have battered my ankle into submission and I had to ease off and it became a slog for the line. Glad to finish though saw quite a few poor people down with the medics round them.
Congrats! Super inspiring considering the unfortunate training block...you're clearly very resilient for finishing. Take 2wks off to recover and sign up for a fall marathon! I bet you'd run sub 3:45 with proper training...I'd love to follow your training on youtube.👍
thanks very much! Yes I'm feeling pretty proud of myself right now to be honest. Yeah, I managed 3:39 last year... then 4:10 just now with poor training... maybe I could at least get a little closer to the 3 hours if I did another one in a few months...?
3.39, or 4.20 to 3 hours 😦. No offence, that is light years away. 3.10 is not even near 3 hour pace. Just being honest and you have to have realistic targets.
Thanks Michael! Yeah it's funny - I've had occasional periods of being recognised over the years but I never anticipated it happening from videos like these!
The race was really hard. This was my first marathon. Did it in 3:37. But at mile 22, even with some training my legs cramped up. Really well done though. The heat was hard.
Thank you Ollie, and amazing work from you there on your first one! That's a great time anyway (I did 3:39 at Manchester last year which is an easier course and it was much cooler) but especially given those conditions!
This was my first marathon, I felt it at the exact same places, miles 20 and 24 and had to walk, still very satisfied with a 4:16, also considering it was a lot warner than expected, we all did well
I live in Brighton and do all my long runs pretty much along the same route. That hill out to Rottingdean and back can really take it out of you especially when it's blowing a gale!
Well.done, Rich. Would have been a lot easier to just "sack it off" but you got out there and did it. Just completing a marathon is very tough, regardless of time.
As i've told many a runner before, and will continue to do so again, they key to a successful marathon is 5 teabags. Not 4. Only yourself to blame on this one.
One of the great advantages of running the Brighton marathon is that the 30k mark when ordinary mortals blow up is usefully in the derelict light industrial estate where with few spectators, no one can hear - and more helpfully - see you scream!
Nothing wrong with walking in a marathon at ALL. I actually did a planned run walk strategy from the very start of Manchester last year. Walked over 3km total. 3:35. Still by far the fastest marathon I’ve done
I think there's a lot of people who walk for a bit at water stations just to get the HR down. 3:35 sounds very quick for all that walking! Very impressive! Thanks again for watching Conrad!
@@AlastairCunningham-g4z ah I see. Well despite a few people suggesting I do another later this year I think I will take a bit of a break from them and concentrate on half distance and below for a bit
I died off at a similar spot! Had been cruising along at 5.23 per k avg pace and then suddenly was working hard for 5.40 at 32k...and most around me seemed to be stopping and walking which I think somewhat enabled me to give mentally a bit before I needed to. Cramp kicked my ass in the last 4k as well but hobbled in for 3.58. That heat was savage!
@@TheRichKeeble thank you! Yes it seemed to be the suffering zone for a lot of us so pleased most still got round. I imagine we were walking very close together at one point looking at where abouts you were in the video towards the end!
Nice one Rich, I ran at Brighton to at the weekend. Found it really hard going, think I said thank F@#k that's finished to when I crossed the finish line 🫡
Thanks Alan! Well done to you! It was hard, hot and hilly. That last couple of K felt like it was never going to end! There was some great atmos though looking back at the vid!
Yep, conditions were hard, but it was well organised and had a great atmosphere. I found I couldn't get my breathing into a rhythm with the wind and really struggled on the last 8 miles. Well done on finishing it, especially as you missed much of your training 👏 Think I'll do Manchester or Newport next year if I don't get in the London ballot.
Thanks mate! Yeah some real steep bits to be honest. I do like the route overall though, and it's better than it was in 2022 when we had to go through this tedious industrial bit. The crowds were great! I would defo try Manchester again though at some point... speaking of which, hope you're looking forward to that!
Well done. I don't think id of done it if I hadnt done the main bulk of training - so fair play! I only got 2 runs in my taper and missed my final long run due to injury was limping around 2 weeks before. Missed goal time by 18 mins but I'll take it and happy with it considering I was 80/20 I wouldn't be even able to do it.. Rubbish goodie bag at the end...NOTHING.
Thanks Luke! I think the fact I'd run two previously was a big factor in me sucking it up and going for it to be honest. It was tough af even then of course. Oh mate well there you go, you finished, you did it - amazing achievement! Yeah, it was just a bottle of water... and that was it right? I was genuinely confused that I'd missed a table with some protein or energy bars on it or something.
@@TheRichKeeble nope you didn't miss anything, they just provided sod all. Had better from a local 5 miler I've done which cost about 1/4 of the entry price.
Feeling confident about the first 20 miles. After that, I guess we'll see. I've been known to do a great zombie impression in past attempts.@@TheRichKeeble
I completed this marathon too ... but in 8 hours lol. It was my first. I was hoping to make it in 6 (im old and have arthritis) but the hilly half of the course did me in. I walked from 16 miles on ... and EVERYTHING hurt. Lol. Hasnt put me off though ... already signed up for next year!! Must be insane
That last mile feels like it goes on forever doesn’t it. Done the half and the marathon and they both feel so long on that last bit along the front. But well done well run. I’m doing London this weekend
Thanks very much! You're absolutely right, and in fact when I did Brighton in 2022 there was some gantry thing a couple of hundred metres before the finish that confused everyone into thinking that was the finish... but it just made it seem even longer! Lucky that wasn't there this year (well, different organisers of course). Best of luck for London!
Thanks Chris. Obviously now very glad I didn't sack it off, and despite never wanting to run again after finishing that, a few days later being able to walk completely normally again I'm already thinking... what could I achieve at another one with some actual training...
Like yr style so I subbed... 😂Don't know u from acting (il Google it)...but a true honest opinion of a race that looked monotonous.. 😭....luv the bling tho...🏃🏼♂️Well done....🎉🎉🎉x
Sub 4 marathons is amazing. How long have you been running for. My goal is to complete a marathon in sub 4 I don't care if its 3.59.59. I have ran 1 half marathon in a time of 1 hour 46.
Thanks Kevin! That's a very decent half marathon time so surely a sub 4 full is within your grasp. I started running March 2020, seemed to make some quick progress, but was very inconsistent until I started training for my first marathon in December 2021. I imagine I must have some lucky genetics or something because I've never done very high mileage in training.
Cool event. I'd love to see how much profit the organizers make from each event after paying for the water and the souvenir tee-shirts, the kilometer markers and permits. Surely they donate most of it to Ukraine?
Great video! I also fell apart at about mile 21 and had to walk/run back - that long road killed me and the heat was tough. Your film brought back all the highs and lows of the day! Thanks

Great work out there, Dale and Rich. Rich, this is your greatest victory yet: you persevered when most people would have given up. Much respect, sir.
Thanks so much Lee. I really appreciate that. Very glad I didn't bail now and of course now as the days go by I gradually forget the ordeal and start thinking about the next one...
Well done , loved the commentary along the run

Hi Rachel. Ha how funny! That was a really fun show to work on. Oof sounds nasty. Sun cream next time for me for sure! Thanks for watching!
Cracking effort Rich and an enjoyable watch! Running my first attempt at the 26.2 distance on the 21st and TERRIFIED of the ~3 hours/20 mile barrier
thank you very much!
Well done Rich, I did Brighton last year, its a great atmosphere
Thanks Johnny! Oh yeah, loved the crowds and the entertainment!
I’m definitely a fan Rich. Chuckling away in front of the fire while I watch this.
PANTS!
😂
Fab video. I have just found your channel. I did Brighton and watching this brings back so many memories, some of them good 😊
haha I'm glad! You did it this year or previous? Thanks for watching!
@@TheRichKeeble this year, I also did it in 2018 as my first marathon. I’m pleased to say I was nearly 1 hour quicker this year than I was in 2018.
@@James-Henderson oh yes! Very well done!
Fantastic effort from you both
Thanks Dave! Really happy how it went, and for Dale to get his sub 4
Glad you managed to get your bag out of the barrier 😂, I was that “fan” that saw you at the station. 👋
It was really tough out there and I had some similar struggles towards the end, but a great effort and a very respectable time, especially after that tap incident! 👏
oh haha! Thanks mate! What a great start that was! Well done to you then. I'll have to check out your video!
We should all be very proud!
nice job RIch!
Thank you!
Great effort, I’m actually on your video in Union Jack t shirt. Brutal course,I faded badly at mile 20 too, but just managed to hit my sub 4 target. Tough day indeed. Keep up the great work.
I was running behind you for a bit . (Guy with the joggers ) . Nice race
oh nice! Very well done for your sub 4 then! Thanks for watching! (and appearing)
Nice. I'll have to try and spot you
Well done! U was very stong and fight to finish the race! Sometimes the race not go how to plan , but never give up and finish the race are better then DNF! And all those who say if u walk in a race dont know what they talking about! I was pro runner 20 years ago and I walk in 3 race when I hit the wall hard but I still was a pro runner 😊
from my experiences u should start this race in 6:00-6.10min/km pace u had go stronger in the end and never hit the wall and I think u had run all the way to finish this eace strong!
Congrats on getting it done, was tough out there with the heat and the wind think it caught up with a lot of us.
Thanks Paul! Yeah lots of people struggling it would seem. How was it for you?
@@TheRichKeeble felt pretty good until about 26km when the camber on the road seemed to have battered my ankle into submission and I had to ease off and it became a slog for the line. Glad to finish though saw quite a few poor people down with the medics round them.
Best wishes out there. Been a very wet start to the year. Great to be out in the fresh air though.
Thanks mate! It is indeed!
Excellent video! Glad you managed to do it, and you’re getting recognised a lot now too!
Thanks Michael! Yeah it's funny - I've had occasional periods of being recognised over the years but I never anticipated it happening from videos like these!
Great effort Rich! There is no shame in walking during a marathon.
Thanks Laurie! I agree - it's lovely when you manage to run the whole thing, but a little break can really help!
There is. Slow down. Never walk.
What an effort. Well done mate
Thanks Alex! Appreciate that
The race was really hard.
This was my first marathon, I felt it at the exact same places, miles 20 and 24 and had to walk, still very satisfied with a 4:16, also considering it was a lot warner than expected, we all did well
Well done Ian! You did great then! Very nice time! Thanks for watching
Well done Rich Keeble!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you very much!
I live in Brighton and do all my long runs pretty much along the same route. That hill out to Rottingdean and back can really take it out of you especially when it's blowing a gale!
oh nice! Yeah I think it's lovely round there, just a bit brutal when running a marathon
Well.done, Rich. Would have been a lot easier to just "sack it off" but you got out there and did it. Just completing a marathon is very tough, regardless of time.
Thanks mate! Very happy to have done it, and a reminder that you can achieve more than you think!
As i've told many a runner before, and will continue to do so again, they key to a successful marathon is 5 teabags. Not 4. Only yourself to blame on this one.
I'm embarrassed Carl
I went wonky at the 20 mile mark too. We all did well to get through it. The road into and out of Hove seemed never ending.
oh my god didn't it just. Well done for getting it done mate!
One of the great advantages of running the Brighton marathon is that the 30k mark when ordinary mortals blow up is usefully in the derelict light industrial estate where with few spectators, no one can hear - and more helpfully - see you scream!
ha yes Patrick, although I don't think I would've been able to scream at that point if I'd wanted to! thanks for watching!
Watched that & feel yer pain my man.
Thanks Alastair! Enough time has elapsed now of course for me to consider doing another one
I’ve done 5 & 2 short ultras. Can’t get my head around doing more after a tough shift doing the Solway Coast last Summer.
Ah well done Chris - you smashed the sub 4 despite everything though! A lot of people were in trouble during that so we all deserve a pat on the back!
@@TheRichKeeble thank you! Yes it seemed to be the suffering zone for a lot of us so pleased most still got round. I imagine we were walking very close together at one point looking at where abouts you were in the video towards the end!
@@chrispy_runs ha we probably were! There was a lot of us walking it seemed!
Well done on finishing it, especially as you missed much of your training 👏
Think I'll do Manchester or Newport next year if I don't get in the London ballot.
Awesome well done mate. That course looks hard to me. Windy and mentally just tiring having to go back and forth in it.
@@mrm9561 weird innit. Wasn't exactly cheap, but at least the medal was good and not made of wood
Yes, Rich! You made it look easy....ish. Can't believe you got elbowed in the nipple.
Thanks Mark! Ooh yeah it really hurt you know!
Well done, mate!
Thanks Mack! Hope you're looking forward to Manchester!
Must be insane
aw bless you Alison and well done to you! You're a marathoner now so congratulations! Good luck for next year!
Well done Rich, would have been easy to sack it off due to training issues. Maybe an autumn marathon?
Thanks Chris. Obviously now very glad I didn't sack it off, and despite never wanting to run again after finishing that, a few days later being able to walk completely normally again I'm already thinking... what could I achieve at another one with some actual training...
Well done Rich! Who needs to train for a marathon, nothing to it, eh? 🤪
Thanks Donato! Exactly! What a waste of time
Like yr style so I subbed... 😂Don't know u from acting (il Google it)...but a true honest opinion of a race that looked monotonous.. 😭....luv the bling tho...🏃🏼♂️Well done....🎉🎉🎉x
ha thanks Liz! Appreciate you checking it out and subbing!
Well done with no recent training, did cheer you on at mile 19 and you did simile and was looking good. Brighton half next year ?
Ah yes thank you for the support Tim! I think I'd like to do Brighton Half again next year yes, well I'd like to actually run it this time.
I had an incredibly similar race at Leeds last year Rich. Did it in 4:11. Hot day. Fell apart early on in second half. Horrible.
actually amazing what a difference some sun makes
congratulations, you ran 10 minutes faster than i thought you would...............
Thank you! haha well there you go!
Yup, some people have absolutely no clue HOW HARD long distance running is. If you have to walk a little, then walk dammit! 😂
Absolutely! The only issue with walking is it just makes the damn thing last longer!
I imagine you're right!
Ready Salted 🤦♂
sorry
I suffered with you. Good entertainment anyway😅
ha thank you!
