  • Our travels through prehistory jump back even further to 80,000 years ago, a time when fire was the most valuable commodity around. A clan of cavemen lose their precious flame and, with no knowledge of how to ignite a new one, must hunt for a new source of fire.
Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, Quest for Fire features early roles for Everett McGill and Rae Dawn Chong and the feature film debut of Ron Perlman, all of whom are totally committed to their roles.

I re-watched it recently, for the first time since I was a kid and it's fantastic. I think I was just too young to get into it when it was released on video originally, although I was always fascinated by it. It's an incredible achievement and it's definitely one of my favorites of the decade now. I guess I just needed some years to truly appreciate it.

In different time periods there really were many different hominid species that would've interacted and even interbred so that isn't inaccurate

At a guess, the girl played by Rae Dawn Chong was an early modern human. The fire questing tribe I’d guess would be Cro- Magnon. The people attacking the Cro-Magnon’s at the beginning of the film I’d take a guess as being Homo Erectus. The cave men who they rescued Rae Dawn Chong’s character from could then be Neanderthals. As for there not being different species’ of humans around at the same time, I would not be so sure. Evidence is coming up on the time to prove we as a species were far more diverse than we originally suspected

AFAIK the cave dwelling at the begging of the movie is heavily inspired on Le Moustier Cave, a classic Neanderthal fossil site. So the clan (Ulam) are probably meant to be Neanderthals. IDK what that makes off the cannibals (Wagabu).

I read an article a year or so ago in which a paleontologist used the line "Lord of The Rings- type era," with regards to the diversity that existed during a specific time period.
Your comment reminded me of that.

Hmmmmm , I must not have been paying close enough attention. I thought the apelike species were all of the species. I had thought they were either erectus or Hiedelbergensus. I read on IMDB that there were only two species , Sapien and Neanderthal. But..... Who's to say what was written was accurate. However , I think the question of whether or not different species existed simultaneously has been put to rest.
Many different species overlapped in their time spent on the rock called Earth.

Thanks for the review, guys. I appreciate your quite positive review. It's indeed an original & non cliché film, being non-Hollowoodian in any sense.
It's very refreshing & almost innocent in the way it shows us life--pure, hard, & simple as it might have been 80,000 years ago.
I recently read the novel "La Guerre Du Feu" by J.-H. ROSNY Aîné. It's a powerful book. After reading that (twice) with lots of attention to detail,
I appreciate more the fidelity to the plot that was achieved in the film. It's only after reading the book that it's based on, & then watching the film
two more times, that I get the plot details. I highly recommend the book, which will triple your appreciation of the movie . (Not sure, though, that
the book has been translated to & published in English). Cheers
It was published in 1909, I believe, around the same time as Jack London's Call of the Wild. They're similar in certain ways, & both show , for me at
least, a deep gratitude & influence by the 19th century icon Charles Darwin.

This movie was an unintentional Rom Com. When the fire went out , that look on their faces was classic. When dude had to smash the fat girl and then you seen a line of them waiting their turn. That was truly funny. I guess it was their initiation into the clan. Purportedly there is a version with very basic subtitles.
I've been searching for a place to watch Clan Of The Cave Bear , but with absolutely no luck.
Interesting note:. At one time Clan Of The Cave Bear was to be a series. Unfortunately it didn't pan out.
BTW:. If your into these type of movies , check out William.

As an archeologist, I love this movie. Even despite the fact that it's incredibly inaccurate now (and in few topics straight up offensive). But the same way I can watch Lord of the Rings and know that it's not an accurate representation of medieval England; or I watch Bladerunner and know that it's not realistic showcase of how year 2019 really was - I can watch the Quest for Fire not as an documentary on prehistoric times (which it hardly even tries to be), but as an epic fantasy adventure movie, more similar to Conan or aforementioned LotR

Been countless years since I have seen this movie and I only saw it once. This is what I remember if memory serves me correctly:
    1) Laughter truly may be “contagious” / learned behavior
    2) Society can joke about the “mundane”missionary position, But they have no idea what it took to get TO that point, LOL!

so confused. 80,000 years ago sounds like a long time, but it wasnt. Home Sapiens and Neanderthals, both had language just as complex as today, and both absolutely mastered fire making to the point where they could comfortably move huge distances for hunting/gathering . this movie stereotypes the "unga-munga me see deer me eat whole thing" low brow caveman idea. and what were those hairy ape like things?

    • @richardrobbins8067
      @richardrobbins8067 2 года назад

Well, the movie and book it's based on got some things wrong. The big ape-like creatures are supposed to be Neanderthals, believe it or not. Discoveries since the time of the movie (and book circa1911) disprove a LOT of things, although I'd still counter some prehistoric tribe probably hadn't mastered creating fire, only preserving it for generations. Once lost it would be disastrous, but it's just a possibility. The protagonists of the film in my opinion are most likely a splinter group of Neanderthals, and they've been holed up in that central cave for a while.
      Just a theory 🔥
