  • I had this project at the back of my mind for a long time and the opportunity came up during my current visit to my hometown in West Bengal.
    So I went ahead and collected some moss, weed and wild plants from my mothers overgrown garden to build a native terrarium. Prior to the build I had actually run a test where I placed some of these plants in a sealed container for 3 weeks. Almost all of them did well. They rooted and flowered giving me the confidence to try them out in a closed terrarium.
    Also the springtails culture I am developing here hasn't taken off yet so I closed the terrarium without the springtails.
    Components for substrate (soil) mix:
    (with amazon links)
    -Coco peat (2 parts) amzn.to/3ltoCz6
    -Dried moss (1 part) amzn.to/37iCPJW
    -Pine bark (1 part) amzn.to/36mbE1x
    -Sand or ground gravel (1 part) amzn.to/2JkATbW
    Carbon fibre mesh - amzn.to/3g7Jlaq
    My Gear:
    Camera : amzn.to/3rJnMSd
    Tripod : amzn.to/3aQGjoO
    amzn.to/3pc7nDW

      We do have the ferns and the clover too. I'f i'm not mistaken, and it is the same clover, it's edible too! It's called Oxalis acetosella and it tastes sour. I'm not sure you can find the others in the wild here but I researched a couple of plants in this video and they can grow here too.

    is it ok if the plants touch the glass? I saw somewhere that it can't because droplets could get on the leaves and that would cause the leaves to rot. But there are people who make terrariums and place the plants touching the glass as if there was no problem

    • @TheUrbanNemophilist
      @TheUrbanNemophilist  2 года назад +1

      Its a good question. I use a lot of aquatic plants in my setups and they fo well when they are touching the glass. For terrestrial plants some are fine touching the glass like the watermelon begonia but Fittonias will not like it. So it is different for every plant. Also depends on the conditions inside the terrarium.

    This is so lovely...
    I had made my first terrarium few days back and your videos were a great inspiration and help.
    I have couple of questions also.
    How big is this glass jar? Is a 1000ml jar the right size?
    How much of condensation is optimal coz that indicates the amount of water in the terrarium also. Do you identify over watering through the amount of condensation or is there any other indicator? One of my peperomia just rotted off from the roots in a week's time.
    I have failed to breed spring tails in charcol even after 4-5 attempts. They seems to just vanish after 4-5 days. Will be trying again

    • @TheUrbanNemophilist
      @TheUrbanNemophilist  3 года назад +2

      Thanks. Jar is 1200 ml. Heavy condensation throughout the day is indication of overwatering. Ideally condensation happens during night and morning and clears up during the day. Peperomia is a sensitive plant in terrariums.
