Moss terrascape DIY

- This video is about a Moss terrascape that I built using an interesting piece of driftwood, some moss and plants.
Prior to the build I boiled the driftwood in water to sterilise it and remove fungal spores if any on the wood. I used some superglue (hardscape glue) to attach the wood to 3 pieces of river stones that the wood stands on its own at a slight angle. I also attached some thin pieces of driftwood to the main wood to create some details. Next I prepared a paste by mixing aquasoil powder and Sphagnum moss with water. I applied the paste onto the cracks and crevices of the wood on which I proceeded to attach some Fissidens moss.I also used another Moss at the base the id of which is unknown to me. Next I attached some Anubias nana and Bolbitis Ferns to complete the scape. I took a rectangular glass jar and placed some lava rocks in it on which I carefully placed the moss terrascape. Finally misted the terrarium, added some springtails and closed it up.

"Vines climbing up the tree trunk" effect is beautiful! It reminds me of the scene you once showed in the nature area near your hometown. It had lots of big vines and huge trees.

This is breathtakingly beautiful! Where do you get aqua soil powder?
Thank a lot. I buy the ADA aquasoil pellets and grind it to a powder. You can check out the process in this video
ruclips.net/video/kO0ewCAGGDg/видео.html
I think they also sell aquasoil powder but I could not find it in the local stores.
This is beautiful... What are the springtails? and why you have added them? I am curious to know...
Thanks. More about springtails in this video

Wow, definitely giving it a try. I assume after you sealed the jar you just leave it as it is. Does it require any after care or how long can it stay "sealed"? Ty
Thanks and yes it would need periodic maintenance.
cool build. tell me about that lid with the light in it. diy or where did you buy it?
Thank you. The light is outside. Just an overhead led.
Beautiful setup! Where to find driftwood any ideas?
Thanks. Aquarium stores.
This is an amazing work! Thank you for sharing. How often will do spray water unto the moss?
You've gotten a new Subscriber now.. 😁
Thanks. Maybe once in 2-3 months if it looks dry
Wow very nice❤❤I Want to try do it😊

thank you very much!!!!
Amazing video! Very informative! I want to create a little pond. Can I use the same paste you made with aquasoil to create a wall to retain the water?
Thanks. May not work submerged in a pond.
Beautiful...😊
Dost ,What temperature we need to maintain ( like Minimum to Maximum )
As we face the lowest to highest in Punjab
Thanks in Advance
Thanks. 16-32 deg is ideal.
@@TheUrbanNemophilistThanks for reply...
wonderful !
Lovely build, Nemo! I've been enjoying and learning a lot from your videos
Thank you. Yes I crushed the pellets using a grinder mixer.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist oh i see! Thank you for sharing your tip!
hello congratulations nice job. what insects do you put inside?
Thanks. Those are springtails. More about them in this video
ruclips.net/video/D6GxODPVe7I/видео.html
Great video, thanks for the idea! One question, what did you use for the cascading vines over the driftwood? Thanks!
Thank you. Just used some think pieces of driftwood I bought at a local aquascaping store.
Eyesome build! Could you guide me as to where I can find a driftwood like that?
Thanks. You will need to keep looking out in aquascaping stores near you.
Ciao.
Thank you. You can use tropica soil powder.
Grazie grazie..domani creerò il mio terrario, sono così entusiasta 😍 have a nice day 💪👍
from where i can get springtails ??? i am from delhi india.
You can find them colonising dark damp places in nature. You might find them under your flowerpots or even in your garden or backyard. They are everywhere in nature.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you , will try to collect some 🙂
Hi, thank you so much for the helpful content! one question though, is there a need to soak the wood for weeks with vinegar etc for terrarium use?
Thanks. If you buy seasoned driftwood from aquascaping stores it is not necessary. But if you collect from nature seasoning would be necessary
@@TheUrbanNemophilist is there anyway to know if the wood has been seasoned? I did purchase some woods off an aquascaping store but aren't sure if they've actually seasoned the wood. Thank you for the quick reply!
@@rzilla92 it would be typically stripped of all bark, visible cracks visible in cross section, light in weight but will be hard and devoid of any moisture. It should ideally read lowest on moisture meters.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist alright, thank you so much!
Sir
Hardscape glue usually doesn’t come with thin long extension so that the adhesive can be applied remotely deep inside hardscape … where to get that extension ?
Comes with this amzn.to/3XqQSoE
I'm just discovering your channel and it's amazing!
I just have a question that we dont have the answer in the video: what is the light inside the bottle at the end of the video please 🙏🏼
Keep going like this and thanks for sharing your creativity 😉
Thank you. The light is outside the bottle. Its just a white led light.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you for the Quick answer 🙏🏼 so i think i will trying to do something like this ;)
Hey man, awesome looking terrascape. I have just one question: Where do you put roots of the plants you have put in? I see you navigating stems around, but do you stick them into soil or something?
Thank you. These are epiphytic plants. They will rot and die if you plant them rhizome deep in soil. They can grow epiphytically on the moss terracotta base inside the glass enclosure.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Wow, great to know. Thank you a lot for your quick response.
Sir you r great
Need live moss can you suggest me any link to buy
Thanks. From hills and forests ethically. Also online sites like Amazon or local aquascaping stores.
I have two questions that 1. Why do we need to filter the fibers between soil and wood? - 2. Is there any options instead of fibers ( maybe cotton wool ? ) . Thanks a lot!
It helps join uneven surfaces easily, quickly and firmly using superglue. You can use tissue or cotton wool. But synthetic fibers are better because they do not disintegrate easily in moist environments.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thanks a lot!
What exactly is hardscape glue? I e see it in a lot of your videos but not sure what it is.
Super glue
Will this work in the tropical county's weather ?
Yes. I live in a tropical country
Is there any way to prep the "sticky" clay like soil without using aqua soil?
You can try any clay type soil
Where do you get springtails ?? Can we use isopods instead ??
From nature or online. More about springtails in this video
ruclips.net/video/D6GxODPVe7I/видео.html
You can use isopods.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thanks a lot, really needed this🤗
Hi, how long do you boil wood? I tried boiling it for 5-6 minutes, but it developed some mould after a while.
10-15 minutes. If the wood is well seasoned it should not develop mold that easily unless it is coming from other materials like gravel, soil or even the plants that are in contact with the wood inside the terrarium. However do bear in mind that small amounts of mold can be part of an ecosystem and should go away on its own once the system gets balanced and stabilised.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Alright got it, thank you so much!!
Also, is hardscape glue similar to fevi quick glue that we get?
Hardscape glue is also cyanoacrylate and is considered animal safe.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist That's a relief cause I've been using fevi quick for a while. Thanks again
what is the diameter and height of the jar used, and how high is the hardscape?
LxWxH 11.5x11.5x22cm. Hardscape smaller so that it fits in the container
I only have fissidens fontanus …. Can that be used here
Yes you can
Without air how it will survive?
Read up on closed ecosystems to know more. Resource available on this channel too.
How to move or deliver out of town?
I don’t hence not much idea
And the update after a couple of days?
Yes
Where to purchase in delhi
Terrarium or materials?
@@TheUrbanNemophilist what excellent work, a question, what kind of moss and plants did you use?
@@AngelPerez-xg8jk terrestrial moss and aquatic plants. All details in description.
¿Que tipo de tierra es esa ?
Soil you mean? Its aquasoil
@@TheUrbanNemophilist . La tierra para hacer el barro, para pegar el musgo.
И долго так простоит ?
Hopefully many years with some care and maintenance
She should have been told not to bring that dog back until he can be properly trained
Is that a comment in the form of a riddle?
Very nice but the music 🤮
Whats with the music. I quite like it but I do understand that personal tastes differ.
Amazing
Thanks
