Those optical illusions of aircraft hovering are freaky and cool. Saw one coming home from work not to long ago as well.
I was wondering !....so, this is just an optical illusion ? amazing !!! Can't properly explain it 🤔
It just has to do with the approach angle and speed of the plane relative to the direction and speed of the car as it passes, creating the illusion that it's hovering, but if you look at the trees in relation to the plane it's a bit more obvious the plane is in fact moving.
this is bs, the trees do not show any indication of the planes movement, they actually strengthen the effect a focal point makes no difference as the effect is relative to the camera not the plane. the only reason you are aware this is an illusion is because you have seen it yourself and if you hadn't then it would have been from the many other similar videos.

Did an approach at Big Bear myself, tricky one. Pilot controlled lights. The lights stay on for 10-15 minutes and go dark afterwards... probably forgot to click to hold them longer
How cool is that. A binkenlights warning one minute before turning off would be a usefull reminder
Is continuing the landing acceptable here or should they have done a go-around?
@@rockets4kids well, you can see that the rwy is light up with his landing light and he immediately clicks the button again to activate the rwy lights again. It's a visual approach and he has a visual on the rwy so...
If it was gusty and so on, I would have gone around.
@@chrislambe400 True, but the pilots would have to remember to look at that light, and it might be an issue at the last moment.
TBH, this is probably best addressed as a checklist/training issue, "at 5,000 ft, click the radio channel to ensure the lights stay on through the whole landing."

for anyone wondering about the runway lights switched off, it was the pilot who activated them and forgot to reset the timer. Those lights are on a timer.

@@TheRealdeel73 nah, he could go to jail for such prank. Those lights can be activated by a pilot and they're on a timer.
The ANA 737 didn't suffer a hard landling. It was put firm on the ground. That's what you want on slippery surfaces. You don't butter on icey or wet runways. Akita is in the very North of Japan's main island and notorious for its winter.
Yep the landing is straight from the 737 Manual.
The Ryanair jokes are funny but the company actually tells pilots to always assume a wet runway.
Helps the turnaround time apparently.
I've flown in 737s in the Arctic for decades and yep, that's often how they come down in winter.
Same with the United B738 at Boston, the commentary is pointless. Flared too late resulting in a hard landing. Arm Chair Pilots. So annoying

@@Seymourbaijan When I say "flown in" I meant as a passenger. No, I've never worked for Canadian North, it's just that when you live in the High Arctic, you pretty much have to fly with them (which I have since 1998).

@@CastleKnight7 you can't even see the trees underneath it. You only see trees that are way closer to the camera than the plane. That's the whole trick.

I saw something like it before. A plane coming into land at an airport near me. It almost looked like it was going to stop midair. For 1 second I thought it was just going to drop out of the sky. But it then started moving again. I would say from a moving car. It would seem that way but for longer. Kind of the mix of both.

The A380 delivered such a high degree of luxury, that they made it so that they could just hover to let their passengers enjoy it that much longer.
Depending on how many $100 open bottles of champagne are still being drank before landing.
Legend has it that the Qantas Airbus A380 is still hovering over DFW to this day.

@@JohnnyAngel8 Another one I find annoying is use of the word sat. I was taught to say "he's sitting under the tree". But apparently now it's acceptable to say "he's sat under the tree".

That particular helicopter landing was actually intentional.
Garrett Mitchell, aka Cleetus McFarland, highlighted it recently on his RUclips Channel.
He, and several others, took part in a two or three day training class at MD's manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona.
The training class is for training pilots how to safely land a helicopter in the event the engine(s) lose all power. In that scenario the rotor transmission can be put in to neutral (much like putting a car's transmission in to neutral), thus allowing it spin freely. Simultaneously, the pitch of the rotor blades can be changed to create something of a glide-affect for the craft. The instructor and student by flying the helicopter a to a small altitude above ground : 50 or 100 ft. in order to get somewhat accustomed to how the craft will feel in a total power loss condition. They then fly to helicopter up to about 500ft. AGL and 1,000 ft. AGL, then cut all engine power. The student then carries out the proper steps to bring the craft to a safe landing, in much like a typical angled approach of an aeroplane in order to mitigate impact, as you witnessed in the video, the "Skids" doing exactly what they were designed to do.
Actually, pretty cool stuff!

It's interesting that he can correct his orientation, even without power. Try that in a skidding car!
Thanks for that, I'd never heard of it before. Makes perfect sense now you've explained it. I've only known plane pilots. Their opinion of helicopter pilots tends to be that you've got to be insane to be one! Waggle the stick to stay in one place. Physics says they should screw themselves into the ground... That sort of thing 😂😂😂

Garrett is now involved in so many genres of motorsports (drag racing being #1), along with owning aeroplane and already having license for helicopters, the guy is truly really good at his craft. And he's continuously pushing the limits of gaining more knowledge and applying it to expand his capabilities. And don't forget, in a car you'd still have brakes, tires and steering (in other words, all kinds of ways to use drag and friction to your advantage) for directional control.
@@y_fam_goeglyd Until Garrett put up that video recently (roughly a month or so ago), every-thing you stated about flying helicopters is pretty much what I thought, too.
It that same class they also go in to how to safely recover the craft if it gets in to one of those "uncontrolled" rotations that you've likely seen on video, and usually ends up in a crash.
Garrett's video gave me a whole different perspective about helicopters. I always thought they're cool. Now they don't seem to be the "widow maker" that many portray them to be.

The A380 is surely more modern, bigger, and the only one so spacious that, airline willing, there is space for a snack bar on board, or like Etihad, a three room apt. called “the residence” with own butler and dry cleaner included- on board! Never seen before!!!

That runway is north/south, the wind was due west 20+kts

@@spolo123 Well, you can go to Auckland (Wellington's no improvement and is usually windier). Of course, Auckland's 500 miles away on the other island. One issue is that Christchurch only has one decent runway and if the wind doesn't line up with it, you have a problem. I was surprised to see an A380 coming in there in the first place.

I've landed at Big Bear once as well. Density altitude means a fast approach over the ground. Lived up there for a bit too. So many afternoon crashes since people load up on cheap fuel, but don't account for the poor takeoff performance!
Why would cheap fuel even be an option at an airport?
The pumps are owned by the airport district rather than a third party, and the fuel is sold at-cost to promote tourism in the area.

The hovering A380 is an optical illusion, it appears stationary because the foreground is moving in the same direction.

It worries me how many people in this comment section think the A380 was actually hovering. Or at least think you were implying that it was.

Large planes may appear to be moving slowly or not moving at all during takeoff or landing due to a phenomenon known as the "persistence of vision." This optical illusion occurs because of the relatively large size of the aircraft and the vast open space of the sky or runway.
During takeoff, the aircraft gradually accelerates, and from a distance, it may seem to be moving slowly because of its size. The human eye perceives motion based on changes in position over time, and when the plane is far away, these changes may not be easily noticeable.
Similarly, during landing, as the aircraft approaches the runway, it goes through a process of descending and slowing down. The combination of its size, the distance from the observer, and the relatively gradual changes in motion can create the illusion that the plane is hovering or moving very slowly.
It's important to note that the apparent lack of motion is a visual illusion, and the aircraft is indeed moving at a significant speed during takeoff and landing.

Did anyone else hear a bit of a Vulcan roar from the Emirates A380 with the crosswind?
It's just relative motion, for the first time irl I witnessed it 2 weeks ago; an Emirates 777 coming in to land at Athens was seemingly frozen in mid-air. U'll even notice, all such videos occur when the viewer is travelling in the opposite direction as the plane - it's a direct consequence of parallax as you twist your neck to observe the plane

I have noticed the sae phenomenon on a road trip recently, a bird was flying by the side of the road and as we approached in and the whole time it looked as if it was just floating in place. It's actually a cool phenomenon/illusion.

I saw one of those "hovering" jumbo jets in Las Vegas last year. We even passed it going in the same direction on the freeway. How the heck does this illusion happen?
It only happens when the viewer is moving themselves - if you look up some more of those videos,, they're always filmed from a moving vehicle of some kind. If the viewer was stationary, the plane would obviously be moving relative to them, but as everything else in the frame is also moving, and they're deliberately tracking the plane and keeping it stationary in the frame, it looks like it's the only thing NOT moving.
It's a science thing, I think they call it relative motion I forgot, but yeah if ur moving, one may appear as if it's not

Yep, the A380 does this all the time. It’s to get rid of any unused chemtrail mix, so they just stop and hover until it’s gone. 👍🏻

There’s no difference. They’re both go arounds.
@@alexnutcasio936 Not at all. You could say the same thing about braking and crashing, they are both ways to stop your vehicle. In a windshear escape maneuver you apply full throttle, leave landing gear extended, climb much more steeply, leave flaps extended and try to gain as much altitude as possible and not speed, all things that are completely different from a normal go around. Hope that made sense :)
@@firestar_1291that was a go-around and they forgot the gear. A windshear escape maneuver, they would pitch up much steeper and they would keep the power in.

Absolutely not. A windshear escape maneuver is indeed much different than a simple go around, which is all this was. Windshear escape involves firewall thrust and a steep pitch attitude.
Guys it’s not just staying there, it’s moving, this happened to me once when I was driving past the airport. It looks really close when it’s actually not, it’s like what the moon does, except it’s not moving with you bc it’s closer than the moon.

As a person who has witnessed this same phenomena ( a stationary aircraft ) and having had it verified by another person that what I was seeing was real was something that I'm still wondering how it was possible . At the time when this occurred I was stationary .

Google parallax. Basically it’s an optical illusion that happens when you’re moving in the opposite direction to the plane at a distance. It’s the same reason things close to the car appear to go by fast, but distant objects don’t.
A strong headwind will result in a flyable airspeed while ground speed is slower. I've landed a C172 in a strong headwind and was barely moving at touchdown. Softest landing ever!

When i drive past Heathrow airport the road is right under the flight path and as driving you can often find massive planes seemingly hovering above you.

The reason why the plane was hovering in mid-air is that, you're going against the flight's direction. So, obviuosly, you'll see it hovering.

Big Bear (L35) is a small regional airstrip in Canada, so the runway lights are actually pilot controlled. Cos not many plane actually land there, to save electricity for the area and light polution they turn off after 15 minutes without being reset by the pilot. He must’ve just forgot and was unlucky enough to have them turn off last minute!

@@anthonyj7989they did actually turn off. Runway lights at some uncontrolled airports can be turned on by clicking the talk button several times while on a specific frequency. They then run on a timer.
This pilot forgot to reset the timer before his approach most likely.
The last thing you want is runway lights that disappear from view as you’re landing.

I remember one particular airport where you had to click the mike a couple of times to activate the runway lights. No control tower at night.

Technically, there is no crosswind limitation. The term is: Max demonstrated cross wind component. Which means it was demonstrated up to a certain point, but that doesn’t mean it’s a limit.
To my knowledge, the limit is what the rudder limit is. So if you run out of rudder input to counteract the xwind, then you're at the limit. Any further xwind will blow you away
@@PilotLifeSven these type airlines are suggested to land with the crab. I think a pilot should try and take the crab out, but the point is, there are different techniques. You can still land with a crab while using all the rudder.
All I’m saying is, it’s not an aircraft limitation.

Though I certainly can't vouch for Garrett, that was definitely a clip from that recent vlog he put up (what was it, roughly a month or so ago?).

He doesn't yet have a helicopter but something tells me that's coming soon.

They say the A380 sitting still is an optical illusion, but I say it's a secret vehicle or secret physical condition. I've seen it before & the people I was with were afraid.
As much as I've flown, I've never had a go around on approach. Lucky, I guess.
I would say the Qantas 380 has simply run out of fuel, a quick walk to the servo with a Jerry can and she’ll be right.
I think the culprit of the 3rd clip (lights off) is the guy from Airplane! 😅
