    I love this video! Thank you! It is because of your videos that I've developed a self awareness about my unit turn, the rotating of the hips and when to hit. When my coaches would say I'm hitting the ball late, I had no clue!!! What did that mean? It's with your unit turn explanation and making sure I was fully extended with my arms to HIT THE BALL 16 INCH in front of me that made a difference! So thank you!

    Ian is a great teacher since he truly appreciates how complex it is to retrain muscle memory. Listen to his podcast. Is it the single greatest resource for the advancing player. Ian keep up the excellent work. These before/after lessons are amazing.

    The other thing I realized is that the shoulder and arm is weakest when it's hyper extended in front of you (from chatting with fitness gym instructors). It's basically what your other video said - you bring strength to hitting the ball in your velocity of turning with the racket really really fast.

    2 points1. For older less flexible individuals stepping thru with right leg promotes full rotation on the follow through. It also helps to transfer weight into the ball. 2. More rotation will cause pulling balls wide to the left. Appropriate mechanics need to be incorporated to prevent that from happening.

    Not to be all counter to the inner game of tennis by giving too many instructions, but a couple of simple things might help your student even further. First, open up his stance, or at least open up his front foot in his neutral stance to allow his hips and upper body to rotate more freely. This is something like your buddy Ramon Osa's 45-degree angle lessons regarding both body position and contact point. Second, activate his non-dominant arm, even a little, so it's involved in the body rotation into the swing you're teaching him and not simply dragging, or even blocking, his proper upper body rotation.

      You're exactly right RE "too many instructions", James. These sessions are always such a tricky balance for us. Too many balls in the air and ALL of them come crashing down. There's no question more potential is there, but a "one thing at a time" mentality is critical to keep progress happening! Thanks for watching as always.

      You need to pick one thing and focus on that one change. Ian knows how to teach. Telling someone 10 things means you'll fix none. Ian, you're doing excellent work.

    I remember you mentioned it but what application you use for comparison of two videos?

  • @ChadSkeeters
    @ChadSkeeters 5 лет назад

    Do hips really go before the hand? Looks to me like Federer takes his hand with him as he starts to rotate and that only the racket head lags behind. Another way to say it is that his hand stays in front of his body regardless of how it's rotated (until way after contact).

    Fun video. Thank you

    He really needs wrist lag so he is forced to hit more in front of him. And that would make his chest open more forcing his hips to rotate in time. Thanks for the video.

      Look and Mcenroes forehand, minimal up to no wrist lag, so it is even possible to hit a decent top spin.

    • @gcs7817
      @gcs7817 5 лет назад

      Wrist lag requires hitting thousands and thousands of balls in the correct fashion because the timing is very difficult for most rec level players to achieve.

    Thats funny, reaching this old guy (no insult meant) body rotation and federers forehand. His forehand is actually more classy, when too much shoulder and body rotation was considered a bad thing. He hits his forehqnd not that bad, the problem is his position to the ball, he is often just too close.

    You need to change his grip , hes hitting forehands with a continental grip .

      Yes, like BigMac and Edberg and Rod Laver etc. Its fine for recreational players if there are good in it.

    I would rather watch a talented kid taking lessons than watching older people with poor mechanics, I doesn't inspire me at all.

      No, you'll get NOTHING out of watching a 4.5 get a lesson. You know where the VAST majority of rec players are? This elder guy! Seeing the 3.0 make a change in his stroke after 40 years of muscle memory is nothing short of genius. THIS is why I watch these lesson vids. You'll never be a 4.5 and you'll get nothing out of seeing a junior 4.5 taking a lesson. Dream on, middle aged rec player. The inspiration is that this elder changed his stroke. You can too. Ian is a great teacher since he truly appreciates how complex it is to retrain muscle memory. Listen to his podcast. Is it the single greatest resource for the advancing player. Ian keep up the excellent work. These before/after lessons are amazing.
