Yeah, I think some people are going to miss the point because they struggle so much with getting topspin to begin with. This is such a great lesson. He probably went from a great rally baller, very consistent to being able to control points and move his opponent around much more aggressively after this lesson. I'm in a similar situation. When I try to win points and really drive the ball, it actually goes slower because I'm adding spin and loop to it which gives the opponent more time. When I try to flatten out, I'm hitting it into the net. Everything in this sport is such a journey, and I've made some strides this year towards improving it. And to reiterate, he's not hitting flat with no topspin by the end, he's just driving the ball into the court better with topspin still. He's adding a tool to his arsenal, not removing one.
Yup, you hit the nail on the head, Infinite. Most people struggle hitting a heavy ball but Phil was "over spinning" his forehand chronically. He had no way to finish points with his forehand because everything was curving heavily and sitting up. Hope this video was helpful!
@@EssentialTennis Did Andy Roddick do this a lot in his career? It always seemed like he'd do this incredibly aggressive and athletic forehand swing, and it would bounce just outside the service box...
Why doesn’t the club I go to coach like this. Like so involved and breaking everything down in a clearer way verses just a bucket of balls. This is great!
From what I noticed, he was meeting the ball not at the highest point and racket drop was together with ball going down. That also caused his shoulder to go down rather than rotate. So I believe the spin motion is by design is less powerfull as we rotate shoulders more up and down, while rotation back and front gives more power. So I believe when we rotate our body and shoulders, our hand becomes a function of that move.
I'm used to hit with a lot of top spin on my forehand too. and it works great against more unexperienced players. now I play slightly higher ranked so I need more power/speed to dominate the players again. thanks for the video. It is exactly what I needed. Keep on going. greetings from germany
11:50 thank you guys n gals for posting great videos like this. This is how happy I felt also when I improved my swing path with the excellent breakdown and examples.
Great video, this is something I am trying to improve on atm, probably helpful to add that the player is in a good semi-open stance to open up the swing. At the end he could probably benefit from shifting his weight forward - I don't do this well and tire out my arms as a result!
Low to high is great to start players, but they need modified coaching as they progress so they don't fall into this kind of trap. We see TONS of 'rollers' that could use this. Really great correction and work.
I can feel the pull of my hand extending through the racquet head. On a heavy topspins I feel it at 9 o’clock on the frame at the start of the forward swing and at the 2 o’clock at contact. On a flat shot it is at 2 o’clock on both shots. Federer is great because he changes those 2 o’clocks to 12s.
Wow! Great work everybody! 2 questions. 1. Why didn't you guys try to move his grip more towards an eastern(ish)? 2. Maybe I missed this, but if we are looking to hit a flatter ball, should't he be trying to reach his swing out (more forward) before it starts rising to follow through? Making it longer and flatter (spending more time in a narrow tunnel of space). Hope that question made sense, thanks!
The moment you learn you're not at the level to watch this clip. Y'all should embed the level of these training vids. Btw, you 3 are hosting one of the best tennis channel. 🙏
Good job guys.. Just want to know why to drop the arm if he can hit on the rise from shoulder or chest height ? I mean the ball height is super good to move in and to hit on the rise not to wait it and make spin
Just noticed something I thought was interesting from the Federer clips in this video. It appears that the butt end of his racquet is at about the same level as the ball just before he turns and makes contact with the ball. Is this a technique rec players and use to get more consistency?
I've been following this channel for 6 years now... and I only realized through this video, that this is my biggest mistake in my FH. I want to kiss you guys!
When I saw you guys teaching him to hit the ball into the ground 4 feet in front of himself, I actually thought you guys were punking him like a Candid Camera hidden camera show (I bet he did, too, like "I'm paying this much $$$ to these folks to coach me and they tell me to hit the ball into the ground?"), but turns out it really wasn't a joke video and actually worked.
The issue he has is he is forcing lag in his backswing ..wrist is completely locked and not passive ..if he would Initiate his hips first and allow himself to swing through the ball he would be able to his a flater ball...
I WANNA BE THAT GUY! (Phil) I wanna have the same $#i+ eatin' grin on my face when I hit a forehand! That does it, I'm flyin' out to Wisconsin to have a Pabst Blue Ribbon and learn how to a forehand like Phil. Get ready people, Happy Tennis Guy is coming to town! P.S. I have the exact same problem as Phil (as far as tennis is concerned, Lord knows what other problems he may have...), I take a homerun swing at every ball like I was doing "wax on" from Karate Kid. Also, I don't/CAN'T watch the ball! At all! HELP MEEEEEE!!!!

Appreciate that, Kevin!

Love that name for over spinning the ball! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I sometime have this exact problem, especially in approach / attack shots rushing to the net! Must work on this.
Hope this gives you a plan to follow!
Exactly what I needed to see.
Thanks

That works too but his technique is bad on the backswing
Great teaching, Kevin!

Top five favorite videos of you all working with a student!

Thanks for the video it Answered the question I was looking for
Awesome, good to hear!
Thanks for this video. I have the exact same problem!
where do you transfer your weight when practicing your swing

Great vids 👍 I’m not gonna use it Becuz I play 12 s and I don’t really need more power but definitely in 14s, 16s etc yea I would agree
Awesome, thanks for watching and good luck with your tennis!
Do you guys do video analysis? Can I send my forehand to you?

Thank you very much, NikeSoccer!

Hi, great video! I'm a tennis coach in SA and wanted to know which app/software you use on the ipad for the analysis of your videos?
Hey Roumen! We use a program called "Coach's Eye". What does "SA" stand for? South America?
@@EssentialTennis Awesome, I'll definitely check it out! And it's South Africa, in a city called Cape Town!
awesome! i'll do it today!

great video for correction! off subject but which strings are those and gauge?
Not sure....I'll have to check with Phil
any tips on warming up?
U guys are awesome
If my understanding is right, Federer adjusts the amount of knee bent while keeping his arm straight.
All in one day?..That's great!
What you saw here took place over about a two hour period. Thanks for watching!
Do you guys always have 3 coaches on court for one student? That's a great teacher to student ratio?
Not always, it's a specific package we offer called the "VIP Intensive". We do one on one and group coaching as well. Thanks for watching!
wow milwaukee is nice in the winter
😆
The forehand is the knock more difficult in the world of tennis
Wondering how much that private lesson costs, 3 coaches and cameras for 1 student.
Look at the smile on your face...
Feel isn’t real! Great video
why do you avoid saying pull the butt of the racket?
I am not getting what you are trying to do. This guy has very good topspin technique why are you trying to destroy it?
That question is answered at 0:04 🙂
Do all 'real lessons' require 3 tennis coaches?
Find a partner that looks at you like Phil looks at that forehand
😂
Where's the wrist snap?
