    I really love the slow motion videos where you can really see what's right and wrong.
    Great help for even an average club player like me.
    I also realized that my contact was too low at waste height when it should have been just under chest height ...that also helped my forehand.
    Thanks and keep up the great videos !!

    I love these videos. I recorded my stroke videos. So whenever you publish a VIP student video and analyse their strokes I switch to my slow motion videos and listen to your analysis on my personal video. Extremely helpful. This way I can correct myself by the time you correct the VIP student. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    a 5.0 player just showed me this technique. He was hitting HEAT missiles at me. He added a little top which made that ball bounce super fast. This video is a great start of the beginning of great tennis. Topspins work great for this technique.

    This is some good content! Easy to understand, now time to hit a thousand balls! So before I go hit I figured I'd do some practice swings gradually speeding up. Before I increased the speed I realized my body position was in the right position! I was always making contact with my hips and chest perpendicular to the base line.

    Thanks a lot for this video. I believe I have the same problem since it was my understanding that the wrist was supposed to stay relaxed THROUGH contact; yet, as you say, it's supposed to "release" before contact.

    Thanks for your explanation. I have to add that the reason why you have to hit the ball while your racquet is perpendicular to the floor is becose is when acceleration is strongest through swing.

    Easy fix. If you look at the slow motion the player hits the ball late aka he is too far from the ball. All he needs to do is take the ball a little earlier. He is already doing the motion correctly.

  • @jiangpeng4955
    @jiangpeng4955 6 лет назад +1

    I had exactly the same problem.... completely locked my wrist and had to elevate the entire elbow so high just to meet the ball...took me a good while to figure it out myself. For me, the reason why I did that was simply because I did not know what to do with/how to use my wrist....

    Oh my god! I don't know who you are. I don't know where you are. I don't know your name. I just tripped over this video and you are the ONLY person I have ever seen dealing with the most important difference between pros and non-pros - not only in tennis but golf as well (and I beleive anything to do with swinging a stick) which No One is aware of.
    I would LOVE to talk to you if at all possible. I believe I know why non-pros make this mistake (and will continue to make it no matter how much instruction they get)
    My name is Ben.
    I absolutely understand if you don't (you don't know me from adam and visa versa) - but if you do have any interest in this conversation please get back to me.
    Thanks

    Ian, Ira and Kirby - Thanks to all of you for this superb video. I have this exact problem too. I can hit the forehand with the lag, but it tends to go straight ahead, like your student. I think that I have the forearm strength from using a hammer to finish two basements. I don't think that I have the shoulder rotation enough, so I will work on your racket rotation drill in the beginning of the video. Keep up the great work and analysis.

      Hi Ian, thank you. I thought I had just a bad arm releases, my elbow was to close to me, and watching ur video it really shows me how to do a proper forehand. And I discovered your way of teaching with the Coach Eye app, its really amazing. So 2 days ago I filmed myself in 60fps and used slow mo to see what i did wrong. And it appears that not only the release was bad, but many other things that I learned in your videos. My racket is pointing down at the impact, my racket path is bad (it goes up), etc etc. So now, I m really aware of what I need to improve, thanks to you. Many many thanks!!! I love your videos and your way of teaching. Leo (from France)

    Love that you finally made an advanced lesson. Although I don't quite agree with the way you explained the horizontal racket thing but in this case it has its purpose. In general it's a good thing to have the racket pointing downwards, most players use it cause it's not possible to hit every shot flat, even Federer does that.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  7 лет назад +1

      Ya, I didn't really explain the concept fully since it was a specific lesson for a specific student. The angle at contact should be different depending on the height of the ball. Here's a great explanation by Tomaz at Feel Tennis: ruclips.net/video/tyzgCIxWxZQ/видео.html

    • @vanderszpak

      I know Ian, you're a smart guy, don't worry :)

    • @anacap007
      @anacap007 7 лет назад +1

      Agreed - an advanced lesson finally gets released. I think video centers around when having a fully relaxed wrist which creates the initial lag and then inhibiting some wrist flexion during the hitting zone so that the racquet face is correctly aligned with your target. I think what Phil was doing was keeping the wrist actively laid back through the hitting zone and orienting his body towards his target and "pushing" as Ian had said.

    Awesome! It was extremely helpful to see your slow motions which pretty much look like my own. Releasing the racket head still is a difficult task for me. I guess my head wants to be in control of every single aspect of the swing which makes it inhibited. If you have any tipp how to overcome this stiffness and hit the ball with joy and passion let me know.

    Comparing Federer's forehand motion and try to teach a student how he should hit like an one of a kind, super pro is BAD, very bad. Being an amateur, my coach and I had very good analysis on my grip, swing motion, my body strength, height, reflex, and hand-eye coordination capability, and we decided to try out something similar to Thiem's way of swing. It worked, I improved so much, hitting powerful sots constantly in and deep. There are differences among different players, you just play the way that works for you.

      TheJeremywaterman Hey Jeremy, you can catch me on the sidelines taking constant notes for the personalized Action Plan that we sent home with Phil. At the end of our student's time with us, they receive a detailed analysis and plan for every facet of their game. I'm writing so furiously because it's our goal to get them their plan as immediately as possible. Students now get that plan as soon as they're finished playing on the second day so that they could literally go home and begin as soon as they get off the plane.
      If you'd like to utilize one of many of our free Action Plans, go to www.ForehandActionPlan.com.

    He should imagine using his racquet like a whip or a wet towel when trying to flick it at someone, in this case a tennis ball. In order for that to happen he has to make the snap happen a few milliseconds so the tennis ball catches the racquet face after the snap

    Am not professional but watching your analysis at 2:38, if you don't mind my comment, there are 2 obvious elements that lack of this hit from roger's:
    1- Roger hits the ball on the rise, whereas your student is hitting too much late (coz too far from the line?). So the hitting angle here is different and does not permit a more flat and powerful hit
    2- Roger's arm, when his racket hits the ball, is totally unfolded, the learner should unleash his arm on contact in order to have more speed.

    • @watungga
      @watungga 7 лет назад +1

      Learner's arm, if unleashed, could acquire some torn ligaments if he is not well trained with the right grip strength. Federer's arm has underwent decades of pounding and is already a sword by itself. There is always a danger of letting the arm loose. Beware.

    • @sunny-zg2kg
      @sunny-zg2kg 7 лет назад

      Indeed, unfolded hitting arm. And on top of that: give yourself more SPACE. The student here had no space to rotate, therefore he pulled his body backwards - to gain some space; while when you take the ball more wide, you've plenty room to start rotating before contactpoint. And with an open stance you 've even more space, combined with a wider contactpoint, the racket starts rotating almost by itself !

    • @tomroe1201
      @tomroe1201 7 лет назад

      its also turning up way too soon needs to focus more on hitting out more so then up cause then u lose depth on the ball

    • @adrianlie6714
      @adrianlie6714 7 лет назад +1

      The student also utilizes a western or semiwestern grip, which requires more rotation of the forearm to rotate the racquet around the wrist. I agree with the abo've comment that hitting through would be better than rotating, this preventing tennis elbow and ligament strain.

    Great video; really useful. Can't remember seeing the details of the release ever being explained so clearly. Can't wait to get on the court and try it out! Thanks. ...and you are both hot as individuals! PS. I have viewed Feds videos lots and try to imitate his forehand on court, particularly in getting lots of lag. Dispite how well I rip the ball I keep getting criticized for using too much wrist and how I will eventually hurt myself. Any comments?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  7 лет назад

      I think there's a big difference between using the kinetic chain correctly and being relaxed enough that the hand/wrist falls into that "lag" position naturally, and a swing where there is active "wristy" movement happening purposefully. It could be you're doing the latter and not the former! -Ian

    How would one go about working with you guys on court? I am a 4.0 USTA computer rated player based in Michigan. My goal is to achieve 4.5 USTA computer rated status within the next 12 -18 months. My weapon is my serve both kick and flat. My forehand is also my weapon of choice. My area of improvement would be strategy and patterns of play in both singles and doubles especially when playing higher level players as I often play up against 4.5 and 5.0 players, i.e., former college players or former high level juniors, etc. Also, I would like to improve my approach or kill shot on mid-court/short balls. My slice backhand is pretty solid and dependable but my drive topspin one handed backhand could use some improvement.

    At the 9:20 mark in the video he has absolutely no body movement its all arm. Even at 11:30 not enough body rotation. I thought the body moves the arm ?

    It seems like this would give you tennis elbow and be very difficult to time the contact with an approaching ball over 40+ MPH.

    This one Federer forhand cannot be compared with the one of the student. Feds contact is at the breast level and the studets one is about hip level. If Roger hits balls in that height hit racket tip at the contact shows down....
