This was huge improvement for me when I came back and really helped me loosen up my swing. A friend told me how she could see I took a full swing at every ball now. A lot more enjoyable to hit that way! I’ve also had a handful of competitive 4.5 match experiences since. Thank you! :-)
Good coaching cannot be replaced, of course, but the use of the video is such a plus when working to change a player's swing. The player can actually see what they are doing both right and wrong almost immediately and work to correct it. Think about using video for teaching someone how to hit a golf ball or baseball. Not using video to teach tennis is like trying to tie your own shoelaces with one arm tied behind your back.
Nice lesson! One thing I noticed is that she doesn't use any forward weight shift in her swing. It would seem so natural for her to step forward with her left foot and drive through the ball. This would enact her hips and hip turning power into the shot. The step forward also could serve as the trigger for the forward swing.
I noticed that too. She uses more weight transfer in her old swing. My guess is she is so focused on the new swing that the hip motion is taking a backseat for now. I'm sure she'll be able to incorporate it in the future.
While those observations are correct how could it be the trigger if she’s doing it in the old pause swing path while still executing forward momentum. Like the instruction pointed to. One thing at a time. As that timing becomes intuitive and natural other concepts can follow. Weight transfer being one of them especially since her feet are active.
Huge thanks to all students of this series of videos for putting themselves out there for our benefits! It is inspirational to see nearly instantaneous transformations. Huge thanks to the coaches for publishing these lessons! The incredibly keen observation, wisdom and a vast set of teaching tools of the coaches is a testament of how great their teachers are and the amount of passion that goes into it.
That's exactly what I noticed too, before reading the comments. I think that left arm swings low AND earlier than it should be. But I think that after the lesson adjustments it started swinging obviously better, but there's still room for improvement. Left arm must start swinging almost when hitting hand starts from the power position and not so early.
Awesome lesson, Ian! My girlfriend has the exact same problem and I haven't been able to help her fix that... We are gonna give it a try tomorrow and see how it goes. Thanks!
Was "snowball" the word you were looking for at the end there? Don't mind me, coming in a year later to comment. I watch what the algorithm tells me to watch.
In most of her shots, the trunk rotation stops too early causing her to make contact with the right shoulder behind the left shoulder. Her stance is too narrow. Also, as others have said, she's not using her left arm.
This might be a game changer for me, I'm gonna focus on it tomorrow when I hit with a friend. A coach made me start doing the unit turn this way (hands together, left on throat of racket) instead of my old way, but sometimes I feel totally stuck and have bad timing with it. I'll try and get some video too! Thanks so much!!! Is there something similar on the backhand side?
@rt61256125 this helped me a lot to not get stuck where I felt like I was prepared too early and had to wait, and/or helped me differentiate my body turning early and my feet continuing to be active, which helped a lot with spacing and not getting jammed up by being to close, again because a unit turn doesn't mean stop moving your feet.
@@rt61256125as can be expected, I ended up taking it too far and making to big a unit turn, which lead to timing issues, i.e. a disconnect between my swing and the arrival of the ball. When I keep my u it turn to a minimum (or what feels like it) then I time everything better. Also I guess right handed, right eye dominant plays a role here in not turning too much in prep for the oncoming ball as it makes it difficult for me to gauge everything. So in short it helped a lot, I took it too far, and when I dialed it back a little it helped again a lot!
I was just working on this sort of thing this morning monkeying around with technique and noticed that it felt like I had more time. Later I saw this video in my feed, so I look to incorporating more of the “hold in the coiled and ready to start the down swing” tomorrow. Thanks !
It seems like the original "technical issue" identified was a compensation for a timing issue. So the "hitch" was her bodies way of increasing the percentages. After the technical adjustment, although things looked smoother, the timing problem was still present and there was a different compensation. She got more spin, but without addressing the timing, I'm not sure she be able to hit with power and spin. Obviously this is the initial lesson, so potentially with practice things might cleat up. But I'd be interested to see a follow up video in a few months to see how she's progressing.
Do you know anyone doing this type of analysis and coaching in Florida? My dad was a pro coach, so I know all the fundamentals and sometimes can hit amazing shots, but I feel like there is something I'm doing that's just not quite right more often than not, and even if I record with my phone it's not sufficient, need multiple angles, etc. I'd love to go to a place that could analyze my shots and give me the proper corrections
Awesome instruction! You hit the nail on the head from a previous video, videotaping is crucial. I took a golf lesson and after one change in the setup the before and after were night and day! Have to get someone to video my swing. And last but not least hit the subscribe button!
I love this video, I really do but as ever trying implement it amidst a plethora of other technique issues like footwork and so on, in a single match situation is challenging to say the least. Today was the first real go and there were glimpses of the progress together with loads of failure but at least we’ve started and I so keen to keep trying. Wish I could practise every day. The forehand step by step video is also great. Determined to get there. Astroturf courts also make for a lower bounce but no excuses.
Dude in all seriousness why is this lesson so dragged out. It is being delivered so slowly that the simple learning points are lost and it just causes confusion. Why don’t coaches scaffold and demonstrate for the student to copy and emulate. This is such simple mechanics but the way this is taught is just so indirect. A simple count would have solved this in about 30 seconds???! Time is money. Just so much talking. 🫤
You might find that your problem is more similar to Sabina than you think. If your ball is sailing long it generally means you're hitting very flat and not imparting enough topspin to bring the ball back down. It can't be stressed enough how important it is to video yourself if you're diagnosing a problem on your own. You never really know what you're doing unless you can see it. Even someone describing it to you will interpret themselves differently than you will.
Brilliant lesson! Thanks. Interesting to see that what looked like timing issues initially on balls with pace resolve with a more continuous circular stroke. That is, how is it that the longer circular stroke seems to be better timed than the shorter linear stroke?

Do not drop left arm when hitting the ball. Non hitting hand should be higher than the ball or hitting arm.

Ian, you are such good coach. Here all I see is those ball feeders coach where for one hour straight they just feed the ball.
Nice work in diagnosing and fixing the problem.

I'd guess the ad revenue is important, but the ads on this video make it unwatchable, they interrupt so often and run for so long. Unfortunate.

17:15 is she letting go her index finger from the grip of the raquet just before hitting the ball?
Call it a hitch!!!
Would love to hear her comment how this has changed her trajectory over the last year...

The off arm is just dangling and not involved much in the rotation
Ironically, I think Ian has the same hitch in his forehand.
Does this technique work regardless of grip style?
Hey Lady you are doing good job and well done keep practise
Impressive improvements on her forehand!!
my problem is timing... I hold the racket too long and accelerate the racket to make up for the timing on a fast return ball, and hit the ball long...

i think people won't be that interested in "getting a 4.5" forehand but perhaps if it's "going from level x to level y" then moreso
