We didn’t, they basically loaded up the truck and moved on down the road - they took about $50k worth of stuff, then tried to deny it. Thing is we saw it and reminded him and he just smirked. My late brother, who was a severe alcoholic, lived with my mother for decades after he returned from the military. Never paid a dime towards the upkeep of her home, took advantage of her sympathy financially and emotionally. Basically sponged and destroyed her home. We finally had to take her out of the home because she wouldn't kick him out. We barely were able to get enough to pay the taxes when we sold it. ( it was willed to me and my sister from our grandparents)
We had an intervention before something like this happened. If you have a loved one taking advantage of an elderly person, step up and do something! These situations never end well if left unaddressed. Trust that!

Grandma refused interventions until the last minute. By that time she was only a year away of dying from cancer. The toxic aunt had her nerve to drive to our city to get access to grandma's storage and sign off on her tiny inheritance check (she bankrupted grandma) and wouldn't even attend the funeral (excuse is I don't like funerals). She ended up dying recently from cancer in her 50's and left her 3 young children with nothing.

Again, I have not been in that situation, but seems to me that is normally how it goes. And, the more I think about it, the more civilized it seems. Sadly it is always these types who feel entitled to. Their parents get old, need them and they are nowhere around . But will still feel they are to inherit everything despite a sibling or siblings pitching in. It is them cleaning their parents up, the house, feeding them, taking them back and forth to the doctor and more, spending time with them. But time they know they are in their death beds , have passed ,here they come ,bullying everyone else ,playing like they cared more then anyone about their parents.

That was ruthlessly cold for his family to immediately try to evict him and sell the house he'd lived in his entire life as soon as they became the owners of it. They literally met with a realtor, meaning they wanted to sell the place, like 3 days after the funeral. That is supremely messed up on their part. And maybe i'm reading into this too much, but it also seems that they weren't all that emotionally bothered by the death of the mother. When my father died, I was a wreck. I could force myself to do the things I absolutely had to do, but I certainly didn't start lengthy and time consuming processes that could wait like selling a house. Just an observation and a guess, but that also seems intensely cold.
When asked if he WAS cut out of the will, the cop responded saying that "wasn't correct" and "he was being taken care of" but that he would "have to relocate".
Here is my guess on this, because i've seen this happen a LOT. When a person dies without an actual will in place, all their possessions are basically sold off and the money split between the heirs that are chosen by some trustee. And i've seen this EXACT scenario play out multiple times where a person owns a lot of land and/or a nice house and because you can't split that between 5 kids or whatever, it just gets sold and the money is split. So from my experience, it sounds like that is what was happening here. The guy wanted the house because it was functionally his house and he'd live in it his entire life, but the rest of the family wasn't willing to let him keep it and they all wanted their split of the money from selling it (which they didn't have to do and could have instead agreed to let him inherit the house, but they obviously didn't). So it was going to be sold, he would lose his home, and then the guy would simply get a cut of the money earned from that sale.
Sale of the house, usually not at a great rate because trustees just want to get that crap over with and move on. Then subtract the lawyer's fees. Then split it by all the heirs. That could've would've become homeless and only gotten a few thousand bucks. Technically not "cut out of the will", but he was screwed either way because there wasn't a will or it didn't stipulate that he gets the house.
When forced into that scenario, your life is basically over. Guy was almost 60, had mental health issues, was suddenly homeless, what the hell is he supposed to do? lol I suppose everyone condemning him would just say he should go live on the streets or maybe get a new, better job at 60 years old or some other unrealistic or incredibly callous belief based on no real world experience.
I don't agree with what he did, but it's easy to understand how his family pushed him into a corner and he felt like his life was over no matter what. I guess he decided if his life was over, might as well take the people who caused it to happen with him. He reminds me of that "Killdozer" guy from years ago. A business was ruining his life, and he tried to fight them every way he could legally, but the corrupt government would not help him because it didn't care about him but loves big businesses that move into their little towns. After he exhausted all other possibilities to resolve the situation, he just used what money he had left to build a big tank in his workshop and he then went out and destroyed a lot of government owned buildings with it until he finally got stuck and surrounded, then he shot himself.
A terrible tragedy that could've been avoided a number of times in a number of ways. I suppose in an ideal society, this guy would've been taken care of by the state so he would've had treatment and a place to stay without stress of having his life completely upended. In a less ideal society, but one full of good people, the family would've simply given up their rights to the house inheritance to let him keep it since it had always been his home. But none of these things happened.
What is just as sad is if this man never murdered anyone, he would've been evicted from his home, given a few thousand dollars and a pat on the back and left homeless at practically 60 years old and told to start over, and if THAT is the story being reported on, everyone in the comments would be hating that family and wishing the best for this guy. We live in such a screwed up world.
Learn to have some damn compassion for other people.
