“Oh you’re gonna get it. UNEMPLOYED”
Oh you KNOW Sanguine took that label and laughed about it all the way to Oblivion XD
He took a screenshot of it, printed it out, framed it, and taped it to his favorite beer mug
Lol funny
This does not change the fact that the sanguine is unemployed. Alcoholism is not a job, even if it is professional, hyper-skilled, fifth dimensional alcoholism.
@@RedHorseArcher Being a deity of something is kind of a job, I'd think. But that's really a question for the Bureau, whether that counts.
Lol I would love to see the Daedric Princes fit into this. The Enumerator does Markarth and visits the Hall of the Dead, only to do the cannibal Namira quest so he can determine who in the cult is employed.

I’ve worked for BLS and done enumeration for major population surveys. Most data is self reported, not assessed by the enumerator.
We’ll explain the criteria to the person, but we record what they tell us regardless of how it might appear to us.
If a drug dealer considers themselves employed, based on the criteria I explained, I’ll record them as employed. Same goes for those ppl that sell luluroe leggings.

Nobles tend to be land owners or occupied important positions in the government
@@DanielPereira-ey9nt Yeah but from some views "land owner" isn't a job, and especially in the case of wealthier ones would be hard to observe in this style of survey because all the actual management would be delegated to others. That leaves the noble NPCs wandering around leaving condescending remarks or complaining about crime.
@@mortimerwake2974 If land-owner isn't a job, then why is 'business owner' a job even if you are not doing any of the day to day operations at all (like Borri)? If a business owner is employed because he owns capital and provides jobs, then so should a land-owner.

Other than the inconsistency in reporting for rich vs poor ppl
@@jennapeneueta-snyder200 The BLA only counts unemployed people as able, willing, and actively looking. Rich people aren't looking for jobs.
A couple of notes;
- Mjoll is technically an unemployed mercenary. To my knowledge, she and Aerin partake in unpaid community service.
- Marcurio is a freelance mercenary, although he is currently unemployed.
- Sapphire is a member of the Thieves Guild, so whilst employed, she is not a mercenary as you have noted.
- Viriya is technically retired, however she claims to work at the fishery.
- Sam Guevenne and the courier are not residents of Riften, and as such should be disregarded during this survey.
- Aventus Aretino was an orphan living at Riften's Honorhall Orphanage, however he ran away to Windhelm following the mistreatment of himself and the other orphans. I'm not sure how this should be approached from a statistical standpoint.
- The Riften Warehouse is the base of operations for two more residents who were not mentioned in the video; Orini and Sarthis. Sarthis is a skooma dealer and Orini is his bodyguard.
- There are multiple locations dotted around the outskirts of Riften, such as Goldenglow Estate (Employed by the Black Briar Meadery), Snow-Shod Farm, Heartwood Mill, and Black-Briar Lodge. As with the Whiterun video, I'm unsure whether these residences count towards the populus of Riften or just the Riften Hold in general.
the section he did quote from the definition of employed did include people who did 15 hours of unpaid volunteer work, they likely are still employed by this definition.
Marcucio probably isn't a resident either. I think he even mentions coming from the university.
Well, as a child, Aventus wouldn't /really/ affect the numbers. Regardless of whether he's considered a Riften resident or not he'd still count as neither employed nor unemployed.
He also forgot to count the court Mage. It's sounds like a job to me.
Also not all the orphans are from riften so there's no way of knowing if Riften has a medical qualities issue. Aventus Aretino was born and lived in Windhelm until the death of his parents, he was then sent to riften's orphanage so it's not unlikely the same happened to the other orphans. In fact I think riften is the only location with an orphanage.
I really enjoy that you're steadily getting more complex with the graphics. Seeing "✅Employed" and "❌UNEMPLOYED ❌" at all those odd angles is a really fun part of these videos.
For more accuracy in counting guards you might want to request some time off and master the skill of pickpocketing so you can acquire the perfect touch perk and mark counted guards by removing their helmets.
That sounds like it’s against bureau regulation
I’ll have to talk to my supervisor
@@any_austin I'd say it sounds like invasion of privacy and theft, which is definitely against policy. Now, murder is also illegal, but it makes jobs available, making the unemployed have a better time getting jobs.
Now that you say it, it seems rather bad to just steal hard-working citizens hats. Maybe you can hand out hardheats instead? (By that I mean reverse-pickpocket iron helmets.)
@@fabian6087 Much more responsible, and effective for the job, every hard working citizen deserves PPE, Personal Protective Equipment.
A quick note: The Bureau did make some adjustments to the count between enumeration and final report. They didn’t complete agree with the enumerator’s judgements in hindsight, which is why there’s a slight discrepancy between the survey and the press conference.
Also as this continues to grow in popularity I would like to make it clear that this is, on some level, parody. It’s not good to judge people based on their face value contributions to a flawed society.

I would consider apprenticeships employment. I'd liken them to internships and in most cases, interns are considered employed, even unpaid ones.
Apprenticeships are definitely employment. You aren't just learning things, an apprentice is also contributing to the master's business by doing many of the menial or easier tasks, although idk if in medieval times if they were compensated for it or not they're still compensated in a way, in a modern day apprenticeship it is paid work. Either way, it is in fact a job.
@@Tslates92 based on what I remember from various sources, it was common practice for apprentices to basically become part of the household of the person they’re training under. The craftsman would feed, clothe, and house the apprentice in exchange for their labor.
i thought it might have been a regional difference, because in scotland apprentices are definitely considered employed.

Just came here for one reason and one reason only. Ingun is DEFINITELY employed. She works at Elgrim's Elixirs (or at least is apprenticed there, apprentices are employed because they're learning a trade, which means blacksmith boy gets a free pass as well). Ingun's also my favorite character in the game, mostly because she sounds so passionate about everything she does and everyone around her. I nearly always use CC's to marry her because of this (and it's fun to have free access of the Black-Briar property).
I won't lie i really appreciate how enthusiastic and nice you are when you see someone actually having a job even if it's like cleaning bc that shit is HARD man
I love how the employment status pins have to appear where the character is facing. It's dedication to internal consistency that doesn't really matter at the end of the day that makes these videos special, I think
Also very cool to see Skyrim's enumerator is an argonian. Best race
The joke is that the government is run by lizard people

20:48 "if a banker counts as employed, theives are counted as employed" is such a hilarious statement
riften also has a nearby bee keeping island that you missed where the honey for the mead and presumably export comes from as well, black briar mead exports have to be very profitable, being the most popular and expensive mead in the entire province of skyrim, and the bee keepers and their guards are an important part of the economy you sadly missed out on
He also missed Snow-Shod farm which is slightly to the south of Riften, and has two farmers employed by the Snow-Shod family.
Well to be fair about the bee farm they were/are hostile so counting them could be difficult

Overall, I liked this content and would enjoy seeing more of it 🤌.
If you liked the editing for that you’ve gotta hit up the RE4 episode. I went crazy on that one.

I wait on the edge of my seat for the unemployment videos. They are simply so relaxing and fascinating. I can watch these for hours.
You didn't have to edit the "Employed" popup text reversed or at weird angles in certain scenes, but you did anyway. I appreciate the attention to detail.
Love that sam (a daedric lord in disguise) was counted in the statistics but i would reckon that ruling over a plane of oblivion is a form of enployment
I'd be very interested in the Bureau's historical records. Would love to see Riften's unemployment rate during the 2nd Era (ESO) compared to current.
The more serious he takes his job in these videos, the better they are.
A government employee mistaking an evil god as a citizen feels pretty in character.
While I appreciate the work you are doing, counting Sam Guevenne, a literal deadric god in disguise, as unemployed seems like a bit of a stretch to me. Although I am not familiar with the bureau of labour statistics' stance on the employment status of deities.
He's the god of partying and revelry so I can guarantee that that deadra has never worked a day in his life
Gods are unemployed & criminals usually accused of many violent and wicked crimes.
Even if he is unemployed, he doesn't live in riften and should not be counted. He can appear in any inn.
I would argue that if being a priest or member of clergy counts as being employed, then ‘being a god’ should also technically count as being employed in a church occupation
I feel like he's the prince of not having a job, not sure where that lands him though...
This is such a wonderfully dumb concept as a video.... and I freaking love them all. The dry humor goes with it perfectly. Well done as always! And thanks for all your hard work!
“If a banker counts as employed, thieves count as deployed” is a very quality take.
I thought I was an electrical apprentice but I guess I’m unemployed
Exactly what i was thinking
Are you a paid or unpaid apprentice? If you receive pay in currency (not counting things like room and board) then you are employed as per LFO standards. If you're unpaid then you're economically inactive like a student is. To be unemployed you would have to not be engaged in education or other pursuits (e.g. caring for someone, etc) and actively searching for employment

This series is really making me realize how much thought devs had to have put into this stuff themselves.
I love these videos, I am a skyrim megafan (idk if that's a word i probably made it up), so i naturally noticed some small absences, you forgot to include an argonian woman who is lost in the docks, she gives u an ancient cube to place at a dwarven ruin, she's doing this because her mind is troubled and she makes no sense of it all, at no given point does she mention that she works at any place so my guess is she's looking for help in the nearest city to those ruins and she's probably gonna leave that location once you complete the quest she gives you.
You also didn't mention the two prisioners inside riften's jail, in there is a nameless woman, so unemployed but then u have sibbi black briar, he's the son of maven black briar, the matriarch of the black briar meadery and the largest business in town, it is not explicit wether all of maven's children that is her 2 sons and 1 daughter all help her with her business but the fact is sibbi was acused of murder, he murdered his soon to be fiancés brother, and is now serving 8 months in jail and asks you to find a woman named svidi who escaped riften to flee from the wrath of the black briars, so sibbi is a bit of a complicated situation...he's in jail so currently he's not working but he is the son of a powerful family and before being arrested he may have worked for his mother and once he's out again he probably will return to his position once more, so idk about that one.
I also wanna point out the incredibly confusing story between aerin and mjoll, if you remember you saw a rich man and his female bodyguard roaming the streets well the story is a bit more complicated.
Aerin saved mjoll's life when she got injured in a dwarven ruin exploring, he nursed her back to health and since then she's been living in riften in her caretaker's house Aerin and she decided to stay in riften because her sense of pride and justice has prevented her leave, she wants to fix riften's problems mainly the corruption of the black briars and the existence of the thieves guild, however she takes more of a mercenary role than anything else, aerin isn't proven to have a job of any kind however as he simply owns a fancy house and lets mjoll sleep in the bed and he feels compelled to give her room and so he sleeps in the couch "figuretavely speaking".
Aerin could've inherited the house from his parents or maybe he used to work and bought the house but no current evidence suggests he works right now.
also idk how the orphanage is classified as a job...does riften pay the orphanage despite grelod the kind being an awful human being who doesn't want any kid to be adopted and turns them into slave workers instead? that puts constance and grelod in a precarious position.
Oh you also forgot to check on the pawned prawn, u met bersi's wife but not bersi himself, but yea bersi owns the shop so he is employed xD
Also speaking of farms there is another farm that supplies riften, it is located southwest of riften past the south gate, in it there's 2 more farmers.
*edit* I forgot to mention a few more
in the ratways there's the deepest parts of the ratways, in there u find more vagrant and lowlifes so unemployed, one of them has a name but she's a deaf homeless woman who attacks anyone that gets close to her so unemployed, there's also a brawler that has special enchanted pugilist gloves, now if he was participating as a brawler in a bigger contest or special attraction that'd be something unique to consider, but nope, he's just a sycopath that lives in a cold stony room with beartraps and assaults any1, u also got a imperial desserter, a man who quit being a soldier and has fallen on hard times after being betrayed by his unit, so unemployed, there's also a chef, now this guy does not cook meat, he kills his victims and then cooks their meat, he wields a woodcutter axe or dagger and assaults anyone that gets too close to him, so he's a serial killer nice, but he doesn't work for anyone nor does he take out contracts he's probably just a deranged individual with murder tendencies.
And finally...there's esbern...esbern is a very important person...he has ties to a dysfunct former group called the blades who used to work directly under the emperor of cyrodiil but they were disbanded decades ago, with the aldmeri dominium arresting talos whorshippers they also chased down every last single blade that existed, they did this because they held resentment towards the dominium for taking over the imperial seat and forcing the empire to implement rules and make the emperor essentiall into a puppet of the thalmor.
Esbern is taking refuge from the aldmeri dominium thalmor, so he paid the thieves guild to keep his location a secret, eventually in the main story u meet him, if u meet him before the right point in the main story he just comes across to you as a paranoid old man who rejects to be seen by anyone inside his little bunker inside the ratways, this is because well he is in hiding, but here's what's so bizarre about his "job" status, he's more of a scholar a researcher, he researches the return of the dragons in skyrim and has extensive knowledge about ancient lore and history, he will serve the dragonborn in the future as an advisor of sorts but he's not a riften citizen he's just "visiting" the area for refuge, so if u don't wanna consider him as a choice to be debated i can understand :D and that's it, that's all of them i think u missed. Love your video please make more of these x3

You could argue being the son of a Jarl is similar to having an internship. Your rules are in charge of the politics and logistics throughout an entire hold and if you’re the son of a Jarl, you’re probably getting raised to take over the position after your parent dies so it would be kind of like an internship.

I think that apprentiences should count as employed because while they might not earn money (it is not always specified) they help a thriving bussines by mostly doing simple chores much wchich allows the bussines owner focus on harder tasks and thus expand their bussines however if the "master" focuses only on teaching an apprentince and the underling themself does not actually help the owner and only wastes their time in that case the apprentince should not be counted as employed
I think the better analogy would be unpaid interns.
He probably also earns food and board from his apprenticeship. He might not be earning coin but he is exchanging labor for food, housing, and learning. Id say employed as well.
The ILO (which the Bureau of Labour Statistics bases their methodology on afaik) counts paid apprentices as employed, Unpaid apprenticeships or internships are counted as economically inactive in the same way as students.
@@nickmiroli If they only receive room and board then that would count as unpaid - think of it similar to a housewife, etc, they do labour, but are economically inactive - and therefore inactive according to the ILO Labour Force Survey definitions (I believe the US Bureau of Labour Statistics uses the same methodology), sadly

5:03 Son of the Jarl would be equal to a squire or knight in training IRL, so I think that does count as employment. He's in service of the realm via feudal vassalage.

I love these videos they put me in a good mood. Hope to see more in the future
I did some research on the topic of "criminal" jobs and what most likely would and wouldn't define employment in those situations. From what I could gather; the main determining factor here is whether or not wages, or the formal exchange of currency/goods+services in general, are taxed at any rate by the prevailing government entity of the town or region you're surveying.
In present times, most (or maybe all) of the developed nations of the world impose some type of tax on wages. When a "criminal activity", such as drug dealing or thieving, produces a profit it is typically considered to be 'under the table' wages. These wages go untaxed, and therefore earning them would not constitute employment. In the real world.
Things may be a little simpler or complex in video game worlds, depending on the game/location of the enumeration survey. In the examples provided through the Skyrim surveys, it doesn't seem obvious in any way whether the wages of the employed are expected to be reported to (and therefore taxed by) the cities.
In the event that wages are not directly taxed, then some 'criminal activities' and the wages earned from them would indeed constitute employment. In the example of a drug dealer; they should be classified as a merchant, same as any other vendor of goods and services. However in the example of thieving, the currency you directly steal does not count as an earned wage as no product, service, or labor was provided to the other party* in this transaction (*whoever is getting robbed). However, however, if a thief is paid wages by a third party in exchange for stealing at that third parties behest, then those wages earned by the thief would constitute some level of employment, albeit it temporary/freelance work. Additionally if a thief is to steal property and then sell that property, the wages gained from those transactions would once again signify some level of employment in a region that doesn't tax wages or the exchange of goods, services, and/or currency.
Lastly; if their is a tax levied agaisnt the citizens of a surveyed region but the specific taxes in question are in no way tied to income/profits, then there are still situations where it is possible that 'criminal activity' could occasionally equal employment. For example if the tax in question is a residency/citizenship or property tax, then it is entirely possible for an employed individual to earn wages through 'criminal activities' that they then use to pay the appropriate taxes. The wages themselves can only go untaxed, and still indicate employment, if all other wages of surveyed citizens are also untaxed.
Hope this helps you streamline future enumeration surveys. Give my regards to The Bureau.
You're right that the "hidden economy" is a large part of determining Labour Force Survey findings. If a thief or similar profession described themselves as employed, they would probably be described as such in the Labour Force Survey. It doesn't matter whether someone is working in the "hidden economy" or not as to if they're employed - employment is just if you are doing some sort of labour and making money in some form from it. You don't need to pay tax or be eligible to pay tax to count as employed. If thieving is someone's primary employment then they would count as employed - the thieves guild are professional thieves for instance. If someone is unemployed but decides to steal something, or steals while searching for work, that would still count as unemployment imo - they're not doing it as their primary occupation but just as an activity. It's not just crime which is looked at in this way, plenty of people might invest in stocks and shares for instance, including unemployed people, but if that's not their primary occupation then it won't count as employment, same goes for someone making youtube videos (even if they don't currently make moeny they may have an expectation of eventually making money, hence employment).
I love these so much. Glad you did Riften! I was curious how this hold would compare to other places.
I was an enumerator in the 2010 census and this series always brings me back
Please make more of these for Skyrim! This video is how I found your channel, and I love it!
16:25 Thank you for going above and beyond by asking another government's bureau of labor statistics for input on how to do your job better. You're a mighty fine enumerator.
I love this series so much! There's something so fascinating and entertaining about it
this video feels a touch more unhinged than the others. austin if youre going insane keep it up, great video
This is my new favourite series on RUclips. I want to see this in as many games and places as possible.
Happy new year! Here’s to another year of my favorite type of content!! 🎉🎉🎉
I like to imagine you’re an actual employee of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and just took it upon yourself to bring this great service to the people of Riften
I love the consistency of making the "Employeed" graphic always line up with the way the npc's are facing, always cracks me up
Love your vids a lot, unique topics and relaxing, keep it up!
I like this video and love the way the "employed" signs always face the direction the characters do
This is by far your best series. Cant wait for more. Would be curious to see pokemon regional unemployment rate haha. Also would love to see Toad Town from Paper Mario and Rogueport from Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Love these videos. I get excited every time one comes out. I can’t wait for a numerator reacts video to come out about these
I think this is easily the best video I've seen all week, it's really funny and well put together, I love it
If a banker counts as employed a thief counts as employed, what a mood
Hi Austin, I love your unemployment reports! If you need any ideas for future unemployment reports, how about Pelican Town from Stardew Valley, Lumiose City from Pokémon X & Y, or any of the villages/towns in Breath of the Wild
Cannot wait for more episodes in this series!
The way these videos are done is fascinating. There's no click bait value, because the final result is in the title. He doesn't do the counts strictly to any guidelines, so all the entertainment value has to come from him. They follow like none of the "good youtube video guidelines" but this man is just charming in such a way that they're still fun to watch. TLDR; very good work.
Unemployment rate of Sakuragaoka in Shenmue would be interesting
