I think it'd be pretty fun to survey one of the cities in Morrowind. You can ask pretty much anyone what their background and occupation are, and they'll give you an answer.
If you had bothered talking to Dervein, you would hear him refer to his master. If you followed up by completing the related quest, you would understand that he is most definitely employed.
you probably could have counted the east empire company warehouse, in there are many guards, but I would accept the argument that they might not be citizens from solitude. also, the guy speaking to the jarl when you first enter the palace (the one that died to a dragon) does not live in solitude, he lives at dragonbridge (as he sais himself). and the only other questionable thing is if you should count general tullius, legate rikke and other imperial soldiers (some of them are locals, but not all of them as stated in the game) . I think, they are specifically not part of solitude and rather sent from the empire. Oh yeah, and dervenin is also technically an out-of-towner, and also "employed" by sheogorath. sheogorath is also just visiting, and pelagius III would either be considered retired, incapable of work or just dead I think, you usually do these videos with the perspective of someone not knowing the place and thats totally fine, I like it. but those things could be technically more accurate
I think soldiers stationed in Solitude should count as employed by the city even if they originate from other cities because they're still living there, only on a long-term temporary basis. Also the city technically still has to pay them, even if they're getting paid by Cyrodiil to pay the soldiers.
Since the blocking of the Pale Pass, the Empire sources all of its recruits locally. The ones who aren't locals arrived with Tullius when he first entered the province and took up command.
I don't know anything about Skyrim, but if the empire's castle is in Solitude, and the soldiers are employed by the empire, isn't Solitude the most logical place to count them as employed in?
@@SolMasterzzz in solitude, there is a stronghold of the empire, but not the main palace. That would be in the Imperial City, which is not in Skyrim. The higher-ups of the army, like Tullius and Rikke are brought in from there, and i would bet that they are not paid by solitude, at most the money would be relayed to them by solitude. they are not employed by the city. @Bone8380 but i see the reason some say the stationed soldiers could be employed by the city, but mainly because they are also used as city guards (as per their name) and would at least be counted as employed in the city

These videos are always great Austin! I enjoy content like this. EDIT: I'm pretty sure fletching is putting feathers on arrows. Or just arrow making more generally.
dervenin's employment is under question as he serves a daedric lord, though it's unlikely he's being paid for this service. he also will ask for money like other beggar NPCs. I would call him an out of towner at the very least because in his quest, he asks his master, "Are we going home?" After which they vanish from the game world.
Even though Jaree-Ra might state he is a treasure hunter he is a bandit actually. His quest involves extinguishing a fire on a lighttower that causes a ship to crash next to the player home of Morthal. Gulum-Ei is part of the thieves guild.
Gulum-Ei isn't actually part of the Thieves' Guild. He's a crooked employee of the East Empire Company who does business with the Guild from time to time.
14:56 Had me burst out laughing. However in your brief interaction back in the blue blue manor with Varnius he mentioned he was going back to Dragon Bridge, which is a town outside of Solitude, so he would've been N/A for this video.
Yessss more of the skyrim unemployment series!! for some reason these are just the best to me, and you bring the perfect cadence of like a beleaguered but dedicated public sector employee
I love the saga of following, protecting, and unfortunately losing the guy who ultimately lives in dragon bridge for the solitude employment survey census 😂
It would be a very, very ambitious project, but it would be nice to see you bring this sort of idea to the Imperial City in Oblivion, or even to one of the other capitals in Cyrodiil, like Anvil or Skiingrad. This is a very entertaining series and it would be great to see it expanded beyond the reaches of just the province of Skyrim (even if you have to go back a few centuries to the time period of Oblivion ;P)
I'd be interested to learn if Bravil truly is the most economically dead city in Cyrodiil, or if it's somehow beaten out in unemployment by like... Leyawiin. Because Southeast Cyrodiil is a terrible place to live.
At that point you could also just go ahead and do a full economic analysis of the empire, including trade flows between regions, economic activity and niches in different areas, the importance of impirial beurocracy (of course very high!) and maybe even make some macro-economic suggestions for the empire!
I feel like Bruma would have the lowest employment, outside of the castle, and the inn, the rest are houses, and then you have the fighters and mages guild having the lowest numbers attending them, most are just unemployed residents.
You missed those in the East Empire Company Warehouse. I counted 6 employed people (guards and dockworkers) and 1 unemployed person (some homeless dude), bringing the unemployment rate up to 3.9% from 2.9%. There were more people (hired bandits) in Brinewater Grotto, which is a dungeon inside the EECW, but I killed them while completing the Scoundrel's Folly questline, so they weren’t there anymore. Videos suggest that 10 bandits spawn in there, so that’s another 10 employed people and 0 unemployed, bringing the unemployment rate down a bit to 3.5%.
3:00 I would argue that anyone in the priesthood might technically be employed as medical professionals in this setting. You know, healing magic and all.
This is the best installment of this series yet. So much plot development and so many satisfying payoffs to early series setups. Truly shows the scope of the author's vision. 10/10 highly recommend.
Speaking of Paper Mario…. Rouge Port would be a a fantastic episode for this series. Although it changes a bit throughout the game so I feel like it’d be most accurate to take the report at the end.
I think you missed the East Empire Company Warehouse interior, as well as The Temple of The Eight Divines in Castle Dour. There's also the cook in Castle Dour and The Executioner, the Legionnaires in the Castle and General Tullius. The last two may be employed by The Empire, though. Also... do criminals count as employed? Freelancers? Are Pirates and Treasure Hunters itinerant, Freelance or Criminal?
You should do a city in TES2 Daggerfall for shits and giggles. Given a lot of them are just procedurally generated NPCs, I'm sure their unemployement rate is abysmally high, but it would be really funny to watch you try and meticulously go through everyone's homes and question as much NPCs as you reasonably can.
I have to say, I absolutely love this series, and the angle - in fact, I love the angle of other series' on here as well like the 'strange places' - very liminal. Brilliant stuff.
I'd love to see you survey a Town from Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, then follow it up with years later from Tears of the Kingdom. That way you can see how the years may or may not have shifted the employment situation.
3:50 This made me want to know what fletching was so I tried googling it but I accidentally typed in "fleching" which apparently means "licking or sucking semen out of a partner's anus" so I was really confused as to what that character's job was within the city of Solitude.
Not sure if anyone mentioned, but fletching (maybe fletchery?) is the production of archery supplies, more specifically arrows (from 'fletching', the stabilizer fins on the back of an arrow) but has come to encompass bows, crossbows, and bolts
these unemployment videos literally make my day when they post. would love to see you make more! they are always fun regardless of what game/town you do
Solitude seems more upmarket in its business with shops being more around the Gucci range of goods. Very much a rich people area. Something tells me Markarth will be in a similar vein with its iconic silver mine and the museum breaks into the otherwise barren tourism market in Skyrim.
I would be interested to know how real-life enumerations are conducted in port cities, places where you would expect a lot of people who are employed by organisations in other countries and are passing through the port. There was no realistic way to assess this in Solitude, and so I understand why a generalisation might have been made, but I find it extremely unlikely that everyone employed at the East Empire Company docks was a resident of Solitude - and therefore counted towards Solitude's unemployment rate - especially considering the relatively nearby Company offices located on Vvardenfell (might have been lost after the eruption) and on Solstheim (confirmed to exist in 4E201).
this is purely a guess but i’d assume that as long as they’re hired legally they probably have a work visa or other documentation showing that they’re not employed in the country they’re passing through. so like if they’re working off the ship (since the ship is technically the “soil” of whatever country it’s register in) it’s because they’ve got proof they can work and be paid through the country they’re currently in and someone trying to do those stats would be made aware

The enumerator calling the Argonians things like "lizard" and "dragon" when he himself is a lizard-dragon
those are their words, they're allowed to call eachother that
If you had bothered talking to Dervein, you would hear him refer to his master.
Oh yeah, and dervenin is also technically an out-of-towner, and also "employed" by sheogorath. sheogorath is also just visiting, and pelagius III would either be considered retired, incapable of work or just dead
I think, you usually do these videos with the perspective of someone not knowing the place and thats totally fine, I like it. but those things could be technically more accurate
“Diane; this guys obviously working, but he’s also a reanimated skeleton. I’m not sure what the rules are on that, I’ll have to email the bureau” - Special Agent Dale Cooper, Twin Peaks Season 4 probably
These unemployment videos are always a treat.
Hey mate just wanted to let you know these are very comforting videos for me. I’ll probably be rewatching them for years to come. Thanks for the amazing content, I plan/hope to become a patron once I have more money coming my way!
Thanks for your research about the unemployment rate in the land of Skyrim. Please continue the series and when you're done, inform us about the amount of unemployment in cyrodiil during the oblivioncrisis. Please.
I like the fact he judges the mercenary as employed based on how much of a unit the guy looks
These videos are always great Austin! I enjoy content like this.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure fletching is putting feathers on arrows. Or just arrow making more generally.
you dont have to type “EDIT:”
@@repghost9481 you dont have to have a SOUR attitude
@@repghost9481 I know that but I wanted to
@@repghost9481 You don't have to, but its a fairly common older practice when you're adding new information instead of just making a couple tweaks.
yes, Fletching is Arrow making and can even be Bow making
2:36 After you call him unemployed, Dervenin gives a little “c’mon man” shrug as he walks away. He knows he’s employed!
24:22 Wait hold up...
I thought the dragon killed him 😳
20:38 "I'm not exactly sure what she's doing but it's definitely got the energy of a job" if that ain't me
dervenin's employment is under question as he serves a daedric lord, though it's unlikely he's being paid for this service. he also will ask for money like other beggar NPCs.
I would call him an out of towner at the very least because in his quest, he asks his master, "Are we going home?" After which they vanish from the game world.
There's no way dervenin pays taxes
lmao@@VolatileFortune
18:45 "Deeja's eyes are up here"
"He made his choice"
I'm glad someone else caught it.
All I know is that everyone was employed when we had the old Jarl.
Yessss more of the skyrim unemployment series!!
for some reason these are just the best to me, and you bring the perfect cadence of like a beleaguered but dedicated public sector employee
this’ll have windhelm quaking in their boots
I love the saga of following, protecting, and unfortunately losing the guy who ultimately lives in dragon bridge for the solitude employment survey census 😂
It would be a very, very ambitious project, but it would be nice to see you bring this sort of idea to the Imperial City in Oblivion, or even to one of the other capitals in Cyrodiil, like Anvil or Skiingrad. This is a very entertaining series and it would be great to see it expanded beyond the reaches of just the province of Skyrim (even if you have to go back a few centuries to the time period of Oblivion ;P)
Their are no children in Oblivion so I feel it would feel a lot more off though.
I am loving the editing done on the text! Gets a big chuckle out of me every time
These videos are some of my favorites on RUclips right now. It scratches this specific itch I didn't even know I had lmao
Same here! I’m binging them tonight lol
“Babe wake up, the new Employment Situation Summary Report just dropped!”
I have no idea why these videos of yours are so entertaining and comforting
DUDE the old madman in the most employed person of them all, he works for the mad god itself, sheogorath. (servant)
Why do I love these so much. I find them therapeutic. I enjoy the detective work.
Not sure if anybody made the comment yet, but fletching is the process of making arrows and bolts for bows and crossbows etc.
Had a pretty awful day at work. Seeing this video out was just what I needed dude!
Just watched the other videos for the first time. Perfect timing on the upload. keep up the great content.
3:00 I would argue that anyone in the priesthood might technically be employed as medical professionals in this setting. You know, healing magic and all.
I have a feeling this video is going to blow up! So funny and really entertaining. Who knew videos about Skyrim would still be coming out in 2023
This is the best installment of this series yet.
Are Pirates and Treasure Hunters itinerant, Freelance or Criminal?
this is my new favorite comfort channel thank you austin :)
Fletching is when you apply feathers to the back of arrows, so apprentice until he makes his own arrows.
I like the immersiveness that you put yourself in as part of the bureau
I feel like this being a patron request made it feel like it was being done reluctantly but that fits the theme of a government census.
I can't believe I'm only just getting recommended this channel. Instant subscribe, great content 👍
I wish to see this video series continue for all of time
I have to say, I absolutely love this series, and the angle - in fact, I love the angle of other series' on here as well like the 'strange places' - very liminal. Brilliant stuff.
Thank you for completing the employment audit of solitude! Keep up the great work!
These unemployed videos you do has got to be some of the absolute best content on all of RUclips. Keep ‘em coming.
I hope you do the Imperial City some day. That'd probably have to be an hour-long special or multi-part video or something.
"Congratulations, you are employed"
"OOOUIUURGGGHHH"
That's such a mood.
I did not know I’d be invested in a series like this, keep it up I enjoy it
I'd love to see you survey a Town from Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, then follow it up with years later from Tears of the Kingdom.
Fletching is making arrows
Fleching while I'm fletching.
That’s felching not fleching
This made me laugh so hard I started aspirating
Fihada's skill as a flecher drew me to this place.
Not sure if anyone mentioned, but fletching (maybe fletchery?) is the production of archery supplies, more specifically arrows (from 'fletching', the stabilizer fins on the back of an arrow) but has come to encompass bows, crossbows, and bolts
18:47 I love the wayward glance down Deeja’s cleavage… shame on you, sir XD
he's just a lizard boy with a lizard brain full of lizard instincts, he's doing his best 😔
18:18 Absolutely sobbing over this moment, the comedic timing. Incredible. Great response.
I`m german, englisch is not even my first language and i know what fletching is simply because of minecraft. I feel so intelligent right now haha
there's also the elf wizard in Erikur's house who is like a live-in healer, and his sister Gislie, who i think is unemployed but does domestic stuff
these unemployment videos literally make my day when they post. would love to see you make more! they are always fun regardless of what game/town you do
This video series is one of the best things I've seen in years. I really want to see more Bethesda games content, like fallout.
I’m impressed that you actually took the real definition of employment. Many would take retirement as unemployment
Solitude seems more upmarket in its business with shops being more around the Gucci range of goods. Very much a rich people area.
Something tells me Markarth will be in a similar vein with its iconic silver mine and the museum breaks into the otherwise barren tourism market in Skyrim.
I know we probably don't have enough recognition to get one of these but I'd love to see this applied to the minecraft mmorpg Wynncraft
Not only are these videos hilarious, I actually learned something in this one! ❤
How much content do you want?
Skyrim: Yes.
The one on Solstheim was abandonned when the mine "run out" of Ebony.
this is purely a guess but i’d assume that as long as they’re hired legally they probably have a work visa or other documentation showing that they’re not employed in the country they’re passing through.
so like if they’re working off the ship (since the ship is technically the “soil” of whatever country it’s register in) it’s because they’ve got proof they can work and be paid through the country they’re currently in and someone trying to do those stats would be made aware
