Today we are taking a look at an article from May 2020 that was titled "these fashion trends should never come back" and I would say 90% HAVE come back! This is just all lighthearted, but I did want to give a little bit of my opinion on all these trends and if I think they've already come back.

Some of these outfits are actually really cute, like sarah michelle gellar in that velvet dress or drew barrymores crochet top. I just hope our current more relaxed mindset on what is 'trendy' and what's not is here to stay, let people experiment and find their own style
Yes!!
Spot on!!!
Sarah was slaying in that dress!
I hope so too.
I, like many people, am forever scarred by low rise jeans. I still have flashbacks to being in middle school and being unable to find a SINGLE pair of pants that covered my underwear. Lots of crying in the fitting room. This sort of thing is a large part of why I got into thrifting. I'm so glad fashion these days is becoming more relaxed
“What does this person wear?” I literally laughed out loud when you said that. So many of these trends are popular now!
I very much prefer the attitude of trends being more flexible and allowing people to just continue to wear what they like. I hope that these types of negative articles dictating that (once) popular styles look bad will become less common or at least taken less seriously. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part.
Yeah, people spend years (and money and environmental resources) struggling to find what works for their body, values, and lifestyle. It's kind of rough calling for an actual end to any style that might be how somebody out there makes it work. We don't literally want everybody constantly in a state of stress over what's okay to like/be seen in, much less to be constantly throwing out perfectly good clothes, just because a stranger somewhere is deriving a sense of power from making up a bunch of new rules.
I'm always kind of surprised when I run into someone talking about fashion as if everyone is just a blank slate, waiting for the new trends to be stamped onto them each season, or as if there's an actual responsibility (not just a fun matter of curiosity and love for novelty and invention) to stay current. For me, trends mostly mean that I have to wait to have a chance to buy what I already like (though of course what I like is in flux over time, and is definitely influenced by popular media). Sweater vests and waistcoats haven't been a consistent staple of feminine fashion, so it's nice for me when they're on trend, because it means I can maybe find one I really like. But once I do all that work, it only seems natural I'm going to want to keep wearing my vest, y'know?
The one thing - and I hesitate to call it a trend, you just saw it everywhere - from the 90s/oughts that I would personally consider banning, because it's basically lazy design and I can't see how it helps anyone, is waistbands and collars that don't go all the way around lol. I had so many tops that I liked nearly everything about, but they had some kind of waistband or a trimmed neck, and to save money the trim only went to the side seams - was only on the front, like you were a paper doll. That drove me nuts, even then!
@@emilyglass6625 I know what you're talking about, for that last part you mentioned where a design doesn't go all the way around. I find that also with prints, knitted items, or embroidered things. It seems odd to me when the embellishment is only on the front and the back is completely different and blank. Sometimes it looks jarring.
Boot cut jeans look good on so many different people... They should come back!! And crushed velvet is pretty. Vests rock. I think the writer of the article jinxed themselves
Exactly!!! Love crushed velvet ! So pretty
love bootcut jeans. at this point they're the only one's i wear. like. i own so many. plus i find them way more comfortable around the knees, cuz with skinny jeans my legs feels like they're in sausage casings.
@@milkpastasoup8960 me too!!.. I only own bootcut and flared as being a 🍐 pear shaped they are the most flattering on me ❤️👌👌
I was around when the 90s, y2k fashions were a thing the first time, and let me tell you, I am so glad we have different rises/styles/cuts of jeans/pants to choose from now. Low rise never fit my body right, and back then you couldn’t find anything but low rise. Now you can actually find jeans and cuts that are flattering on your individual body type, whatever that may be.
Not really, I can't find a proper low rise unless I thrift them. Current low rise are basically mid rise with low rise branding. 9in is not low rise and sits above my navel. I can deal with 8in but 7-7.5in is better for me. When jeans sit at my navel or higher they make me boxy looking, I'm technically an hourglass but my chest and hip measurement is all projection not width and I have a thicker waist despite measuring 12in less than hips and bust and I think my I have a high hip flare.
YES!!!! i mean every body it's different. I'm a short person and i do like a Lot High rise jeans but it doesnt work for me because, well My torso it's short hahaha so, no, no, they do me not favor, and like in every fucking place and store has them and it's annoying, like, please, not everybody can or want to wear the same, please bring every shape of jeans 😭😭😭😭
Actually, high rise is literally the only thing you can buy in stores right now and it looks atrocious on me. I have a shorter torso and it makes my torso look even more stumpy and frumpy. I’ve been searching for low rise jeans for like 4 years now and can’t find them. High rise definitely doesn’t work for everyone and I feel like I’m forced to buy unflattering clothes just because that’s all that stores carry.
So true
@@laurahamilton8868 I think you probably have to go online for low rise, which seems to just be coming into style. Someone up above said it’s not real low rise, which may be true. But options are wider now, not just in rise but I. Cut of jeans too. Hopefully choices keep getting better.
I'm glad that the opinions about fashion have changed to "I don't get this trend but wear it if you want" instead of "this is old and gross, throw it out of your closet". I've regrettably gotten rid of so many pieces that I wish I still had now because of that.
I find it absolutely hilarious that so many of these trends came back so soon after they wrote this article. It’s nice that fewer people view fashion in such rigid terms anymore! And seriously, how could anyone have an issue with velvet or overalls?
Also, your top and hair are so delightfully whimsigoth, Alexa. Love your look!
I think the thing that makes me happiest is that this is the most freedom I've seen with denim in a long time. Skinny jeans notwithstanding (though I live in a rural area so many people still wear skinny jeans because they don't follow fashion) you can rock so many types of denim currently! All the different rises and cuts, straight>baggy>cropped>wide-leg>flared. So exciting! I personally am loving a highrise straight or highrise flare. I did the low-rise thing and I am not comfortable with the entire world seeing my underwear any more.
Haha it’s all about what makes you feel most comfortable for sure !!
So I’m 33, a size 14, and decidedly not trendy, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I literally don’t care if people are tired of skinny jeans. I have some in great shape, they’re comfortable, and they’re jeans so…. I’m gonna wear them haha. Also for wearing with boots, they rock!
@@rebekahkasper6126 AS YOU SHOULD !!! YEEES ❤❤❤❤❤
@@rebekahkasper6126 yes! wear what makes you happy!
I still wear skinny jeans. If I want to show off my shoes skinny jeans are the best pants for that
aesthetics took over trends, everything is fashionable and I love it
I swear the person who wrote this article wears a white shirt and black pants everyday hahaha - love u Alexa u have such good style
I feel like this author had a quota where she had to make a list of at least 50 things, most of which she doesn't hate as much as she makes it out to be. Especially since I feel like many of these were already trends at the time that she was writing this lol, like platform sneakers and leather trenchcoats.
Damn, I hope the person who wrote this article is ok 😂
😅😅😅
I mean, I personally agree with a lot of their opinions, but I'm a ~30 year-old lady~ and an aging millennial so Y2K fashion looks gaudy and dated to me, haha. But you're right that HOW you style some of these trends can completely change how they look.
Yes, I’m a gen x and I go for ‘trend lite.’
I’m 17 and I agree lol. Y2K just looks outdated to me.
@@rachelcookie321 Most of todays fashion is a modern twist on y2k fashion lol. If not that another decade. Nothing is original. The 2010’s is the most outdated looking fashion to me manly because it doesn’t seem old enough to be vintage
@@casswashwash1070 I wouldn’t say most of it. A lot is still influenced by the 90s and 80s. We’ve pretty much run out of trends that aren’t crazy so that’s why they are just repeating now.
It's not so much we've run out of trends that aren't crazy IMHO, it's that we've run out of trends that can be produced at the price point consumers have come to expect from fast fashion. Similar but subtly different thing.
I love velvet burnout clothes! Velvet has always been a staple in my wardrobe since forever and velvet burnout can create some of the most beautiful, intricate designs I can't believe some people hate it.
Give me all the burned/crushed velvet! I can't get enough of it! I love finding these gems at the thrift stores.
I rarely do 💔💔💔 fingers crossed I come across it this fall!
And beaded velvet!
No one actually wore the leather chaps… it was definitely a music video kinda thing. (I am old enough to remember) pedal pushers are the shorts that go just under your knees.
Belly chains are also extremely cultural. (indian tradition, or waist beads in many african countries)
So when I was in middle school low rise pants/ jeans were a thing. I had to wear school uniforms but the khakis people wore were still low rise, and even though the shirts would be tucked in, you would still see so many butt cracks all the time when people sat down! I also had to watch out and make sure my shirt didn't come untucked to show crack, and there was no other option for other types of pants at the time... It was bad and I am scarred for life lol.
Oh gosh! Yeah that makes sense !
RIGHT!? How was I, a growing person, supposed to not show my belly when I have to hike my pants up to the point of a numb crotch to just get them to sit on my waist!?
@@IonIsFalling7217 Certain rises will have you with that experience. Its less low rise and moreso the rise being a low measurement number. 6-7in rise will be a different experience than a 8.5 in rise
It's so interesting how many of these came back in style in the past 2 years. There are so many trends and aesthetics now a days that I feel like almost everything is in style now. Ultimately I think it's a good thing because it's encouraging people to shop secondhand, DIY pieces, and keep things in their wardrobe for longer because it's more accepted to develop a unique personal style.
My style is all over the place just very eclectic and I think people should just wear what ever makes them happy regardless of trends, trends come and go but killer style is forever
Well said! 🙂
@@karenfriebel7680 thanks 😀
I’ve been seeing a lot of 60s/70s styles come back over the last decade. High-waisted pants, and that halter top are both styles from that era. The boob scarf was just a bad recreation lol
It’s partly because low rise jeans fit those of us with short torso’s so comfortably (and really aren’t that low). Most low rise jeans hit me right at the belly button due to my short torso. I have missed them so much as it is the most comfortable and flattering style on me. Really enjoyed your video and your lack of judgment even on some of the trends you didn’t care for!
I’m with you on the velvet and Whimsigoth. There’s now a term for the look I love.
And peasant skirts??? Say not!
I wore so many of these in junior high (i.e. arm warmers, embroidered jeans, etc.) and BECAUSE I wore them in junior high I can’t do it now, like I do not want to go back to that time in life. That being said, do NOT come for my corsets and velvet!! 😂 (I know this is just someone’s opinion, I hope everyone just wears whatever they want!)
Belly chains are also cultural. Women from west africa wear them a lot for various reasons and i personally love the sisterhood values related to it 🧡
I think someone looked at their old pictures and hated how they looked. I get that feeling, because you always cringe at you younger self somehow... But some of this was cute back then and still is now.
With the uggs is so funny, cause I just bought them. For years I always wanted a pair, especially the one with the buttons. I'm already planning some fun fall/winter outfits with them 🤣. They are super comfortable and I got the one that's waterproof, so I don't have to worry about the cleaning that much. Also you right, what does that person wear? The writter hates almost everything 😭
Me too. They're just too comfortable, let us be list guy 🤣
Alexa, your hair looks so adorable braided! You should totally braid your hair like that more often!
Belly chains are an inspo recreation from waist beads. Waist beads are cultural(Igbos) so they should not be seen as "trends".
Waist beads and chains are also extremely cultural (mostly in the Caribbean and islanders) ✨
I didn’t even know this many trends could be hated
The fact that I didn’t include so many too!!!
I saw this list a few months ago! I love that you made a video about it. Similarly, I like some things on this list and I don’t like others, but I thought it was crazy how someone was so passionate about hating these articles of clothing!
i agree with the jeans! I have both low rise and high rise jeans, flared, baggy and skinny and i just love all of them and it really just depends on my mood which i wanna wear
YES! every style is for different occasions and comfort! I totally agree!
I liked how you put a positive spin on such a judgmental article. Thanks for talking it through and making things interesting! Love your videos ❤️
the top in the intro with the ribbons is just stunning!!!!
Your shirt is so cute!!! I love it with the ribbons in your hair!
I never take fashion magazine articles seriously for this very reason. They always bash actually good clothing, and only sprinkle in a few things that no one would wear. This one reads like a Buzzfeed article lol
Also I feel like mid rise jeans low-key give a similar ✨vibe✨ as low rise jeans do but look better and they’re somewhat more practical- at least on me :)
Truuuuuueeeee !!
DEFINITELY. They suit my body shape soo much better than high waist. I have a short torso and it feels like I get swallowed by high rise lol
As a fiber artist I’ve been so excited for crochet to become recognized as fashion and see more people my age become interested in the fiber arts community
It reminds me about an article "50 worst 60s trends" or something like that. Most of the things listed were stuff I absolutely adore about 60s fashion sooo... Articles like that are extremely opinionated xD
i loooove your trend related videos so much!!!
I love your approach to trends, you highlight the importance of just dressing in things that feel right for you. It's the right way to look at fashion as far as I'm concerned. Subbed ❤️
Arm warmers came back in a big way due to Outlander's first season and Claire's chunky knit accessories.
Low rise may be considered to be coming back, but most things labeled low rise currently aren't truly low rise, they are more mid rise, many things being marketed as low rise still have a 9in rise and on me that is still at or above my belly button.
Love how positive your channel is! I think trends are largely perpetuated by clothing companies who have all too much to gain from us throwing out our clothes every year to buy what’s “hot” at the moment. I really appreciate how you talk about these styles, and how even if they’re not for you, you think other people can make them work and look great.
Your hair and outfit is SO CUTE on you in this video! My fave outfit I’ve seen you in ❤❤❤
I was literally cutting an embroidered denim skirt I thrifted while watching this video. I was shocked! I love them so much, and embellished jeans omg I love them!!
I said it in the other video too but omg you look adorable with the braids and puff sleeve top!
I wonder what the writer of that article is wearing today lol.
Seriously !!!!!
I love crochet, especially crocheted sleeves. They go with fairygrunge fairycore type looks really well.
I literally see these trends everywhere today, and plenty of these are items I go around, searching for while shopping
I don’t really wear trends that often because they come and go all the time !!
Love this video keep them coming ❤
I personally love high waisted jeans and mom jean style , I can’t do chokers and turtleneck I can’t stand have anything around my neck!
I’m with you! Is this person okay and what are they wearing right now 😂 also, I love following the idea that whatever is flattering for you and your style you should continue to wear and switch things up when you feel like it not when a trend list tells you too
Love your outfit and your trends. Thanks for sharing this sweetie.
Omg when you have a go about the concept of “flattering” I was literally like PREACH IT SISTER CMON.
Her hair is so cute 🥰 I love the ribbons
love your look today!
Velvet and burnt velvet are everything to me. Also that Sarah Michelle gellar dress is one of my favorites! She is my biggest style icon.
Omg I was just watching your previous video and saw that you just uploaded! Love your videos Alexa :))
❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of my friends told me skinny jeans are cheugy (sp?) I am almost 30 and live in Minnesota. I like how I look in skinny jeans. And it seems more practical for my location. They are easy to tuck into boots because, most of the time, we need to wear boots cause there is snow on the ground. Before skinny jeans, it was soooo hard to not get the bottoms of your boot cut jeans soaking wet and ripping from dragging in the ground. Maybe a summer Jean I would do bootcut. But I am skinny Jean fan and they are here to stay for me.
Edit: spelling
I never stopped wearing bootcut. It just looks really good on my body type.
That article was probably the most accurate trend prediction article in 2020
Haha seriously 😂
I love arm and leg warmers and I can’t wait to get some especially since it’s already getting cold. Also I love velvet too I totally agree with you but I was a 90’s teen lol also yes to peasant skirts and vests always yes to vests especially with button up shirts tbh nothing screams Janet Jackson quite like that look imo it’s iconic.💕 I love your channel!
I wear high rise jeans and also a lot of vintage trousers, I don't generally follow trends unless it's something I really love. As should everyone! I feel like what you said about personal style being in style is so true, I've been cultivating my own style since I wore a bowler hat every day to school when I was 17 lol
I couldn't concentrate on anything but your dress! Love 💕. Do you link it, Alexa?
Alexa, your top is so beautiful and really suits you well
Off to thrift a leather trench coat & sweater vest... this list definitely served as inspiration 😅
Hahahaha yes 😂
As a 90s high schooler, it’s funny to see 70s revival revival. The 70s were the big decade when I was in school so I see those copy cat clothes all the time now and it’s funny !
But honestly, I’ve NEVER seen such a drive towards nostalgia in my entire life. It mush have something to do with “thrifting.” Now a verb.. incredible!
Lol! Ed Hardy! From 17 Again: “You look bedazzled!”
“I saw Kevin Federline wearing this EXACT same shirt!”
That’s a great movie! 🤣
I work at a tractor dealership so bootcuts are an everyday thing because I have to wear boots to work. But they still give me some shape and they stay on. Also, I just bought a velvet dress that I adore. The shape of it is perfect. It's a high empire waist with a big flair. It gives me great shape.
I agree with you on so many of your takes. ☺️ Love chokers too. But those skinny scarfs, I don’t see myself getting back into them, I wore them as a kid, not my thing anymore. 😂
I don’t get how Jean styles are tends! I have straight leg, high waist, mid rise, boot cut, boyfriend - those are my 5 pairs in my closet, and they all work for different outfits, it’s not really for a time period lol
Exactly!!! Each one has a different purpose!
@@alexasunshine83 IKR!!!
I love a lot of these, but truly I believe it depends on the person and how you style it. How you style an item really changes the look.
i used to have a crushed velvet hoodie
I'm loving fashion right now. But same thing's can stay in past but that's ok. Love you and everything u do Alexis. Keep up great work. Lots of love.
I love your hair with that top so cute
Oof I love wedge sneakers! I have to admit, I hated them when they were a trend, but I got my first pair as part of a Clara Oswald cosplay and they changed the game for me!
Okay but can we talk about how cute your outfit is in this video?!?!?!
Love your top 😍
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I like/am neutral about most of these tbh or except for the clear boots. Thats just a crime imo
The little rainbow 🌈😍 you are literal sunshine
❤️❤️❤️
pedal pushers are supposed to be calf-length trousers, but some fashion blogs use the term for knee-length jeans/jean shorts
That list you reviewed for us was just one person’s opinion - and I agreed more with YOUR take on most of it than on the writer’s, Alexa! Always wear what makes you happy 🙂 No one, but NO one is probably ever gonna talk me out of wearing my beloved overalls or my UGGs. Or cowboy boots! Oh-oh, my list is getting longer 😉❤️ Thx for the fun video, Alexa❣️
What rock has whoever wrote article been living under? Most of these are already here!
I own like 7 corsets some of them have been in my closet since 2013, and they are staying in my closet quick fix in making a velvet dress into a skirt
This summer ive been rocking a visor a lot haha. It's "mom" function/fashion. When i bring my daughter to the park or pool, i want my hair up because its hot and i dont want it getting wet... but need a hat.
Love that!!!!! I’ve never worn one before, but maybe I’ll try!
I think some take aways from this article are: fashion is cyclical, wear what makes you feel great. Also if you try to wholesale import a trend from 2001 you could look like fashion roadkill... Make that any decade.
I kinda like this era of aesthetics where we can all try things and wear what we like.
Low rise is back but it’s more mid rise then low rise. I want low rise soo much. Also I’ve seen so many belly chains and yes I might wear one. Yup velvet is amazing and I love it and it’s never gone out of style.
omg the peep toe boots are horrendous💀💀💀💀
They could've used cuter, more current pictures of how these trends are back but in a more current style and had the complete opposite article.
i def have not seen anybody wearing visors, but funnily enough i was thinking about getting one recently lmao
their comment about corsets...i lost brain cells
im wearing a sleeveless turtleneck right now, my hand flew to my mouth when you revealed the last one. also so true, sleeveless turtlenecks for us socal girlies
I Love the top you have on in this! If you’re ever up for selling it, I want it. Absolutely gorgeous!
I was on the hunt for a cute visor all summer long but I still don't have one
sleeveless turtle necks are what i wear under sweaters because i hate the collars but wanna wear the sweater/crewneck
Im loving most of these trends because I wore them back in the day and laughing as I currently sell MANY on Depop and everybody loving them🦋🦋🦋 Alexa totally agree everything is in style now and that is so liberating and cool❤️! Pedal pushers BTW are very tight Capri pants Jackie Kennedy Audrey Hepburn Elizabeth Taylor etc. used to wear them a lot in the 50s They were a great option for people who rode bicycles hence “pedal pushers. “ 🥰
I remember a lot of these trends and remember wearing them up in the 90s and 00s, I still have my low rise jeans lol
And I think I still have some of them
Can you please do a video on fall fashion for hot climates? This is my second fall in a hot climate and I have no idea what to wear...
ahhhhh its definitely brutal so I feel you!
I died when she asked is this person okay?
