    Today we are taking a look at an article from May 2020 that was titled "these fashion trends should never come back" and I would say 90% HAVE come back! This is just all lighthearted, but I did want to give a little bit of my opinion on all these trends and if I think they've already come back.

    Some of these outfits are actually really cute, like sarah michelle gellar in that velvet dress or drew barrymores crochet top. I just hope our current more relaxed mindset on what is 'trendy' and what's not is here to stay, let people experiment and find their own style

    I, like many people, am forever scarred by low rise jeans. I still have flashbacks to being in middle school and being unable to find a SINGLE pair of pants that covered my underwear. Lots of crying in the fitting room. This sort of thing is a large part of why I got into thrifting. I'm so glad fashion these days is becoming more relaxed

    “What does this person wear?” I literally laughed out loud when you said that. So many of these trends are popular now!

  • @mothmallow
    @mothmallow Год назад +490

    I very much prefer the attitude of trends being more flexible and allowing people to just continue to wear what they like. I hope that these types of negative articles dictating that (once) popular styles look bad will become less common or at least taken less seriously. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part.

    • @emilyglass6625
      @emilyglass6625 Год назад +5

      Yeah, people spend years (and money and environmental resources) struggling to find what works for their body, values, and lifestyle. It's kind of rough calling for an actual end to any style that might be how somebody out there makes it work. We don't literally want everybody constantly in a state of stress over what's okay to like/be seen in, much less to be constantly throwing out perfectly good clothes, just because a stranger somewhere is deriving a sense of power from making up a bunch of new rules.
      I'm always kind of surprised when I run into someone talking about fashion as if everyone is just a blank slate, waiting for the new trends to be stamped onto them each season, or as if there's an actual responsibility (not just a fun matter of curiosity and love for novelty and invention) to stay current. For me, trends mostly mean that I have to wait to have a chance to buy what I already like (though of course what I like is in flux over time, and is definitely influenced by popular media). Sweater vests and waistcoats haven't been a consistent staple of feminine fashion, so it's nice for me when they're on trend, because it means I can maybe find one I really like. But once I do all that work, it only seems natural I'm going to want to keep wearing my vest, y'know?
      The one thing - and I hesitate to call it a trend, you just saw it everywhere - from the 90s/oughts that I would personally consider banning, because it's basically lazy design and I can't see how it helps anyone, is waistbands and collars that don't go all the way around lol. I had so many tops that I liked nearly everything about, but they had some kind of waistband or a trimmed neck, and to save money the trim only went to the side seams - was only on the front, like you were a paper doll. That drove me nuts, even then!

    • @mothmallow
      @mothmallow Год назад

      @@emilyglass6625 I know what you're talking about, for that last part you mentioned where a design doesn't go all the way around. I find that also with prints, knitted items, or embroidered things. It seems odd to me when the embellishment is only on the front and the back is completely different and blank. Sometimes it looks jarring.

    I was around when the 90s, y2k fashions were a thing the first time, and let me tell you, I am so glad we have different rises/styles/cuts of jeans/pants to choose from now. Low rise never fit my body right, and back then you couldn’t find anything but low rise. Now you can actually find jeans and cuts that are flattering on your individual body type, whatever that may be.

    • @amanda9301
      @amanda9301 Год назад +15

      Not really, I can't find a proper low rise unless I thrift them. Current low rise are basically mid rise with low rise branding. 9in is not low rise and sits above my navel. I can deal with 8in but 7-7.5in is better for me. When jeans sit at my navel or higher they make me boxy looking, I'm technically an hourglass but my chest and hip measurement is all projection not width and I have a thicker waist despite measuring 12in less than hips and bust and I think my I have a high hip flare.

      Actually, high rise is literally the only thing you can buy in stores right now and it looks atrocious on me. I have a shorter torso and it makes my torso look even more stumpy and frumpy. I’ve been searching for low rise jeans for like 4 years now and can’t find them. High rise definitely doesn’t work for everyone and I feel like I’m forced to buy unflattering clothes just because that’s all that stores carry.

    I think the thing that makes me happiest is that this is the most freedom I've seen with denim in a long time. Skinny jeans notwithstanding (though I live in a rural area so many people still wear skinny jeans because they don't follow fashion) you can rock so many types of denim currently! All the different rises and cuts, straight>baggy>cropped>wide-leg>flared. So exciting! I personally am loving a highrise straight or highrise flare. I did the low-rise thing and I am not comfortable with the entire world seeing my underwear any more.

    One of my friends told me skinny jeans are cheugy (sp?) I am almost 30 and live in Minnesota. I like how I look in skinny jeans. And it seems more practical for my location. They are easy to tuck into boots because, most of the time, we need to wear boots cause there is snow on the ground. Before skinny jeans, it was soooo hard to not get the bottoms of your boot cut jeans soaking wet and ripping from dragging in the ground. Maybe a summer Jean I would do bootcut. But I am skinny Jean fan and they are here to stay for me.
    Edit: spelling

    I never stopped wearing bootcut. It just looks really good on my body type.

    I love arm and leg warmers and I can’t wait to get some especially since it’s already getting cold. Also I love velvet too I totally agree with you but I was a 90’s teen lol also yes to peasant skirts and vests always yes to vests especially with button up shirts tbh nothing screams Janet Jackson quite like that look imo it’s iconic.💕 I love your channel!

    I wear high rise jeans and also a lot of vintage trousers, I don't generally follow trends unless it's something I really love. As should everyone! I feel like what you said about personal style being in style is so true, I've been cultivating my own style since I wore a bowler hat every day to school when I was 17 lol

    As a 90s high schooler, it’s funny to see 70s revival revival. The 70s were the big decade when I was in school so I see those copy cat clothes all the time now and it’s funny !
    But honestly, I’ve NEVER seen such a drive towards nostalgia in my entire life. It mush have something to do with “thrifting.” Now a verb.. incredible!
    Lol! Ed Hardy! From 17 Again: “You look bedazzled!”
    “I saw Kevin Federline wearing this EXACT same shirt!”
    That’s a great movie! 🤣

    I work at a tractor dealership so bootcuts are an everyday thing because I have to wear boots to work. But they still give me some shape and they stay on. Also, I just bought a velvet dress that I adore. The shape of it is perfect. It's a high empire waist with a big flair. It gives me great shape.

    I don’t get how Jean styles are tends! I have straight leg, high waist, mid rise, boot cut, boyfriend - those are my 5 pairs in my closet, and they all work for different outfits, it’s not really for a time period lol

Always wear what makes you happy 🙂 No one, but NO one is probably ever gonna talk me out of wearing my beloved overalls or my UGGs. Or cowboy boots! Oh-oh, my list is getting longer 😉❤️ Thx for the fun video, Alexa❣️

    I think some take aways from this article are: fashion is cyclical, wear what makes you feel great. Also if you try to wholesale import a trend from 2001 you could look like fashion roadkill... Make that any decade.

    I kinda like this era of aesthetics where we can all try things and wear what we like.
    Low rise is back but it’s more mid rise then low rise. I want low rise soo much. Also I’ve seen so many belly chains and yes I might wear one. Yup velvet is amazing and I love it and it’s never gone out of style.

Pedal pushers BTW are very tight Capri pants Jackie Kennedy Audrey Hepburn Elizabeth Taylor etc. used to wear them a lot in the 50s They were a great option for people who rode bicycles hence “pedal pushers. “ 🥰
