  • Jackie Froemming's hosta bed is truly delightful with its various colors, textures, and sizes of hostas. They are a beloved perennial that adds an elegant and lush touch to any garden. Her choice of companion plants, which complement the hostas in color or texture, adds a pop of contrast. The garden must be a beautiful and serene place for both her and her visitors.
Watch PY&G on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. CST on Pioneer PBS or online at pioneer.org/live.
Prairie Yard & Garden is a 30-minute television show about gardening in the Upper Midwest. Each season, PY&G travels the state to meet with researchers, gardening and nursery professionals, educators and ordinary backyard gardeners to discuss specific issues in horticulture, landscaping and a host of topics in gardening.
Produced by Pioneer PBS, PY&G is a midwest gardening program that inspires well-being through the growing and enjoyment of plants. Mike Cihak is the producer, director and videographer with additional videography by Tim Bakken. Production sponsorship is provided by Heartland Motor Company, ACIRA, Shalom Hill Farm, Friends of Prairie Yard & Garden and members of Pioneer PBS.

Oh wow!/Slugs and snails seem to love these in the UK. Any advice on stopping them easily?

Yes, the critters love hostas as much as we do. The slugs and snails love the cool and somewhat moist areas that hostas love too. If you have mulch, it might be good to remove it as the slugs love to hide under that. If that is not an option, here are a few other suggestions. You can dig a shallow hole, put a pie pan at soil level and fill it with beer. The slugs will crawl to the pan, fall in, and drown as they love the yeast in beer. Some people feel that is a waste of good beer, so you can put crushed egg shells around the area. When the slugs crawl over the egg shells, it cuts their bodies so that may help. You can also use diatomaceous pellets/earth to do the same thing. You can also buy commercial granules/pellets to help control the slugs. I also know of people who put a board out overnight, and then lift it the next day and stomp the slugs that have crawled under. If you keep doing that, you can cut the numbers a bit. Start early in the season before the numbers build up on all methods of control so you can get ahead of them. Good luck, and thanks for watching Prairie Yard & Garden!
