I think you should “keep life simple" by continuing to use your HW3 vehicle considering that the majority of Teslas on the road use that hardware, plus, the primary reason why I watch your channel is because you have a HW3 vehicle like I do. It is in Tesla’s best interest to keep their promise (that was made during an earnings conference call) by getting HW3 owners up to unsupervised FSD, even if it means they have to give me an upgraded FSD computer (which was also promised in the conference call.)
@@eastmanwebb5477 for my channel that is dedicated to tracking the progress of FSD, it becomes impossible to provide value if I keep my HW3 car. However, the force is strong with my wallet, preventing me from making any moves. I think that if I had 100k subs, for example, or more disposable income, I would buy a new car. I agree we should wait for HW3 to get the upgrade, it will be coming for sure. The timing is the hard part.
@@techgeektesla... Well see but I would not count on an upgrade for HW3 cars. Especially considering they are already working toward AI5. Elon is just stringing people along until they transfer FSD to new cars and also trying to avoid class action lawsuits for claims/expectations undelivered . Elon has said that version 3 is when hardware for tech starts to become mature... Optimus, Starship, FSD, etc. AI5 will really be version 3 of FSD hardware. HW3 is when they first introduced the FSD computer. I know Elon has claimed that robotaxis will start next year (2025) but HW4 isn't good enough for L4. It just isn't. They're argument will be that FSD on HW4 will be safer than humans and I have no doubt that will be true. The counter argument is what the cars still can't do and can't handle if there is NO DRIVER in the car. Waymo and now the Amazon backed driverless taxi services account for this edge case gap by having remote operators. Tesla is going for full real world autonomy. I put my money on AI5 for that to start to become real. FSD is going to continue to evolve for many years. I think Tesla should deliver L3 highway for HW3 vehicles but the cameras and processing might not be sufficient. FSD v12.x uses both HW3 processors which means no redundancy. No redundancy means no approval for L3. If they strip out turn by turn FSD and just focus on highway autopilot maybe it can do L3 highway (in good lighting conditions). Maybe.
@@andrewf67 It would most likely be possible to design a hardware upgrade using underclocked AI5 chips to fit within the power and cooling available in HW3 cars. And Tesla is already showing off prototypes of the Cybercab (which would most likely be using AI5). Though it's not unreasonable to assume that Tesla may try to get as many people as possible to buy new cars instead of upgrading.
Man, I love your videos. You are such a level-headed, genuine guy, and I really appreciate your perspective and the hard work you put into these. Keep it up!
I feel your pain and frustration. I’ve a HW 3 model 3 but instead of a new Car I bought some shares. If FSD is realized then those shares will increase dramatically and I’ll be able to afford the Tesla of my choice with FSD. I do though appreciate this doesn’t help your situation as a content creator. Maybe for now rent an HE4 M3 and provide compare and contrast videos with your current M3. Great insights, John, thank you. Wish you well.
I may be adjusting intellectually to the fact that HW3 is incapable of keeping up with fsd, but in no way am I accepting it emotionally, nor do I want to. I spent a lot of money ($10k) with the promise that I’d have a level 5 car one day. Not only that, but I’ve been a willing beta tester for Tesla. I (and by that I mean all hw3 fsd owners) deserve better than being disregarded for 4 months, a year, two, or perhaps for ever.
I use FSD on every drive. I HOPE for continued HW3 updates, but am emotionally prepared to get abandoned. Targeting March 2027 for replacement of my 2021 Model Y… with an FSD transfer, I hope.
I think the cameras are good enough on hw3. I think they will upgrade us to a HW5 equivalent chip for inference and FSD as a bit of a thank you to their supporters. That would be the Tesla way.
@@tristanward9937 I suspect you're right, even though I don't want that to be the case. I'd genuinely be willing to pay $2-4k to upgrade to HW4 or HW5 if that were ever an option.
If you are comfortable with FSD at HW3 or if they do the 3.5 Upgrade then, it's a case of do you need FSD unsupervised or are fine with the supervised. FSD on AI3.5, or AI4 may still never reach Level 5. I have a MYP 2022 with FSD. Current version suits 99% of what I would want it to do. For me a 2026 upgrade to a new car would be my desired timeline if I needed something else in a newer car, or FSD Unsupervised. For someone that's providing ride-share/taxi services, I can see FSD as a big help in reducing stress levels and effort. The big question I always ask myself "Is the upgrade necessary, and justification for the cost?". Coming from a luxury gas SUV to the Tesla was a no brainer. It's a little different when you have already made the jump. As everyone (most) know's a Tesla is in a state of constant functionality upgrades, so you always get closer to a newer model in a Tesla then in a ICE vehicle. Happy FSD'ing no matter which version.
I own one of the HW3 (M3P) you mentioned - purchased in March 2023 with FSD, hoping for upgrade next year or purchase AI5 in 2026. What are your thoughts about all models on AI5 including a front bumper camera (like Cybertruck and Cybercab)? I agree with you, makes no sense to buy HW4 now.
I bought my MY HW3 in DEC 2022. I've been having all of these same thoughts about what should I do about not getting the lastest FSD Experience. I feel like I bought my car the absolutely worst time, missing the $7.5k credit by 11 days, and paying max price for the car and FSD... I think my plan is to get this car paid off and keep it for road trips, and then as soon as AI5 drops, I will just lease a RWD short range 3 with FSD experiencing the latest FSD and for daily driving.
No mention of leasing here? With leasing, you get to choose from the latest and greatest every 2 or 3 years. Granted, the yearly mileage can be an issue.
Just a couple quick thoughts… Hardware five and hardware six are already well on their way on the drawing board. Also, I know a number of people who have fully paid for the roadster and that was maybe six years ago. I know many others that have put down the $50,000 down payment and that was also around six years ago. No word of that coming yet! That’s just how this company rolls. I would really be surprised, regardless of promises, that hardware three people get what some of them are expecting. My first car was around number 5000 in 2012. I paid for full self driving. My second car was a few years after that and I paid again for full self driving. My third car was about a year ago and I again dished out $15,000 for FSD.
@@AdamHewlett actually it was an option to pay for the future implementation of full self driving. If you waited until 2013 or 2014 or whenever, it was going to cost more.
Bought a 2024 M3 AWD AI4 and transferred FSD. Kept my 2018 M3 Midrange. I had planned to buy later this year. The loss of E2E highway accelerated my plans with a $4K price adjusted inventory car waiting on the lot. Now I’m just waiting for the next release b/c the car has 2024.38.6 (12.3.6) installed, grrr, so a matter of a little time before i get back on the current release train. My biggest gripes with FSD are on highways. Jerky ramp lane changes, bad transitions from city to highway stacks. For now I drive manually more often. Amazing how quickly I settled into hands free with 12.5.4.x, I miss it badly. Crazy how much more effort it takes to drive manually too. Though moving to a dual motor is so much fun! Still have 2 AI3 cars and now my AI4. It’ll be intriguing to see how this all evolves.
I really like my 2019 Model 3 SR+ with FSD. I bought it without AP and paid the $3k + $1k and FSD sub. It drives extremely well around my area, and even my roommate who has not liked the thought of a “self driving” car or any of the AI stuff has been LOVING having FSD on my Model 3. Even just today she asked me on the way out “Can I take your car to work today?” Even though she has a brand new civic lol I’ll probably wait until HW5 to upgrade and even then may just keep my old 2019 along side a leased HW5 car (most likely a Model S or a Y if they keep the same body as current) Keep up the great content BTW. You are one of the few “smaller” channels I love to watch. Hope the algorithm grabs your channel and can get you to 50k soon lol
Do not buy a new vehicle just for this reason. Tesla owes us. Don't let them off the hook. The need to upgrade us to HW5 or 6 or whatever. We paid a huge premium already for this.
I am going to keep my M3 AWD 2018 with FSD. Yes I would like the latest software update but it so much better than when I first got it. Hope you stay with your Tesla with HW3 as we need RUclipsrs like you. I skip through most of the RUclipss now as they are not relative to me. 😊
Funny when I bought my 2019 M3LR with FSD, they never mentioned that I would have to pass a special driving test to get the product I paid for 2 years earlier. I never saw that in any paperwork I signed that day. I didn’t realize that they needed alpha and beta drivers to test the system that I bought without any restrictions years earlier. They did say that if the hardware changed in the future while they were getting it to work, they would upgrade my vehicle to that. Let’s see how that goes.
Like you I would be waiting to upgrade my car till after HW5 is out. I hope Tesla does upgrade my HW3 car to a variant of AI4, but if they even do this it will likely be year or more down road.
Thanks, Jon! It is refreshing to have an honest, heartfelt discussion about this. We (HW3 owners) empathize with you and feel similar frustration, and the "just go buy a new car" mantra is short-sighted and sophomoric. You were spot on for folks like me with a 2022/2023 model: the car is barely 2 years old, and I expect Tesla to keep its promise to get my vehicle to Level 5 autonomy. I specifically bought my 2022 M3 for FSD and to be used as a robotaxi. It will be interesting to watch it all unfold. Keep up the great content! Whether by the courts or standing by their word,Tesla will deliver Level 5 to its promised customers.
@@andrewf67 they probably also need sensors on the roof, and if only cameras, they need to improve resolution a lot, so many years for that. And I think they will need much better maps. They are barely to first base.
Waiting for AI5 and 800V charging in the next version of Model Y! 12.5.4.2 on HW3 meets my needs since I always dis-engage whenever there is ambiguity, and I too am unsure of how the situation will unfold. Many of my drives are now disengagement free, and I believe intrinsically safer since there is near zero likelihood of FSD losing attention and becoming careless especially on long monotonous drives! Hopefully, 12.5.6.3 equivalent will get ported to HW3 in the near future.
2022 HW 3 Model S with FSD here. Considering Model Y Juniper when HW 5 ships. Would I do this if HW 4 upgrade happens? At that point car will be 5 years old, so Yes, pbly. Meanwhile hoping for HW 3 v13 scrunched version.
I also have a 2019 Model3 and purchased FSD WHEN I BOUGHT IT. I also received FSD SOFTWARE in late October of 2021. We live in the foothills near Yosemite and drive over a 100 miles at least 4 days a week to the central valley and use FSD about 90% of our drive. I don't know if Tesla documents our overall milage usage. I would hope they would consider this and give preference to those who use and test FSD for future updates. What are your thoughts on this. We have drive over 150,000 miles in our model 3 and don't belive we will buy a newer one just to get V13.
I thought I read or heard it mentioned that they were going to upgrade hardware three cars if you purchased FSD from the start. They would put a new motherboard and Chip and replace the cameras. I'm in a 22 Y pro H3 car so I feel your pain. That's the one problem with electronics there's always going to be that better and faster device right around the corner. If they're not built to upgrade they need to build them to be upgradeable because of the cost of the car. I really can't believe that they didn't make these cars upgradeable. This would really make me rethink this whole electric car thing or the FSD part of it. $7,500 dollar option wasn't cheap. Really the only hold back I would think would be wiring for the new cameras and motherboard with chip. One can only hope. I haven't even worn out my first set of tires yet it's hard to believe that your car would be obsolete already. If they're not upgradeable this is always going to be a problem with an electric car my opinion.. Thx for your video and thoughts.. 🇺🇸✌️
Hey John great video FOMO that's me, every day, you make a ton of sense, maybe waiting on A5 as we are 2 years into A4 already, and no front camera FOMO has got me bad. I'm " on the Telsa app, and website and even went to Tesla for a test drive! The highland of course is nicer than 2020? But not night and day a lil better. For me, it's about the hardware, & heat pump. I have a 2020 Model 3,std+ 32,000 miles. I paid $38, 19 mos ago, and I probably added another $3,000 metal skid plate, lighting fog and tail lights, swivel screen, Id be lucky If I get $19,000 it's been dropping quick. Even though I make under $50,000 with the 7500 off and FSD transfer, I'm afraid I will lose a great deal! $22,000 no-interest loan for a brand new 2025 with fsd! Even if model 2 comes out for $ 25,000, you still have to add FSD, I doubt model 2 will compare to Highland.. i need my heated seats lol ... Tesla sales have been calling and texting, and I will copy and paste what he said, he has got me wondering? "" If you want a great car, I would highly encourage you to buy it this year. Big difference between the older model 3 to this one, or the model Y has big incentives. The upgrade from HW3 to 4 is a LARGE upgrade. Cameras can see farther - see better at nighttime and can react quicker. The new processor in HW4 makes FSD even smoother compared to our cars (my 22-year model also with HW3) The big predicted difference between HW4 and AI5 is just going to be a processor upgrade. The cameras are where they need to be. Per Elon... As for waiting for next year or this year. It's up to you of course but there's about a 10-12 thousand dollar price difference.
My car is 18 months old and already max it’s limits, what about when he said this cars are prepared for future, timeless. Made for the future. We lost so much just for him lowering the prices now we lost the upgrades too … so ass
I can't wait 2 more years for my Cybertruck. I'll be selling my 2019 and hoping that Cybertruck gets the FSD transfer. I would already have bought except for the FSD transfer.
Ya, I am having slight buyers remorse. I bought my used M3 2023 about 2 months ago and now all this talk of the new FSD + amazing deals on NEW Teslas, real kick to the gut. :(
What is involved in updating hardware? I'm surprised Tesla doesn't offer a hardware update package or an aftermarket company offering a hardware package. I'm sure the cost would be high, but cheaper than a new car.
They have to go in and switch out the FSD computer and all the cameras. They offered an upgrade from HW2.5 to HW3.0 if you had FSD. The upgrade was $1,000 if I remember correctly. I vaguely remember hearing that the upgrade from HW3 to HW4 wasn't possible because the computers are physically different sizes so they won't fit. I don't know how true that is, or if its something that could be reconfigured.
Wait for AI 6 or 7. Cameras need Sunshades, that technology is out there. When their chips are made thinner to lower power consumption with a higher speed then we are getting there. For now the Human brain works off of 26 watts of power. They have a long way to go.
AI4 upgrades should be sent to special reviewers like you. We need your content badly. I’d love it for my HW3 but let’s get it to the most important reviewers first. So we’ll know what we’re potentially getting😊
AI5 sounds exciting, but I much prefer buying a used vehicle at least 2-3 years old to let someone else take the depreciation hit. It’s a challenging conundrum when you want the latest tech though. But for me I wouldn’t be buying an AI5 vehicle for 3-4 years.
You should keep your car because all us HW3 people will want to see your videos and progress on FSD for HW3, not just HW4, 5, 6... My plan is to skip a few generations before I upgrade my 2022 MY HW3. I didn't buy a car like that to have a robot drive it for me. I like the option of FSD but also enjoy driving myself. One day, it might be hard to find a Tesla with a steering wheel! 😂
@@DRVRLES Felt like a huge upgrade at the time! However, that was just an adjustment on our screens, visually, to add more color and contrast. The cameras operate the same internally for FSD.
Very disapointing. I remember the Osborn (transportable) portable BTW. Got Model s in 2022. I knew that as an early tester I was at the leading edge. Maybe I wam getting a little tired of this hype, so I ignore it. Fortunately FSD is working pretty darn well these days. Just forces the human to continue to supervise. Whatever. Thanks for hanging in there.
I got my M3 at the end of 2023 and it had ancient HW3. 6 Months of ownership before I realized I'll never get true FSD...You need to correct your chart as M3's had HW3 until Highland
@@MarkChinsky Yeah, Wikipedia page needs to be updated then. Ship dates are different from the release dates. I probably should have only listed the ship dates on there. Thanks for the info!
Should have kept driving your old car a little long back in 2019. Given the high U.S. inflationary period we have between the time of your $50K-ish Model-3 purchase and the present-day pricing of new Tesla vehicles, you can literally acquire a new inventory 2024 Model S All-Wheel Drive (4,022 mile odometer demo vehicle) in the Atlanta market (zip 30315) right now, since your $50K-ish has a purchasing power of roughly $70K-ish today!
It depends on your budget. TLDR, HW4 is technically better, but not by too great a difference compared to HW3. Elon also said that he plans on upgrading HW3 cars to AI5, so it won't be a total dead end for current HW3 cars.
You are missing one important point: When it will be established that HW3 will not make it to unsupervised FSD the price of all those cars are most probably going to dive in the deep.
@@karimtoubal4403 up until now, FSD hasn’t really affected the resale value of cars. If it does in the future, then you could be right. However, I guarantee you that Tesla will provide a paid option to upgrade those cars. It will make it worth it, along with helping to maintain the value. These cars easily can be driven for 100,000+ miles with the original battery. And the drivetrain is rated for 1 million miles. Value won’t be tanking that bad.
@techgeektesla Indeed but unsupervised FSD + Tesla ride hailing app instantaneously turns HW4 cars into money printing cash machines. The first peoples that will know about that are HW3 owner. Hence, as soon as FSD turns unsupervised they will be tones of HW3 owners putting their cars for sale. This surge on this offer side combined with a collapse on the demand side : since only people that don't know about the fact that HW3 will not be FSD unsupervised capable and people trusting Elon words (not a lot those days) will be willing to buy HW3.
Yeah I was excited about it but it's always amazing from the testers. But then when the patch comes out to my car it is nowhere even close to being as good as what the testers were showing in the curated videos. The 12.5.4.2 is hot garbage in my experience. The best one that I have seen was 12.3.6 I wish I could roll back to that version. Seeing as things are going I'm definitly not buying any new Tesla or recommending them to anyone until HW5 comes out.
HW version be damned, FSD is no where near level 4 autonomy. I'm also using HW2 FSD and it is great ... till it isn't. Same goes for HW4 at the current moment. Too many edge cases that seem like they should be easy but aren't. I'll hang with HW 3 and enjoy FSD for it's best use case, long distance highway driving.
Life is short. And there’s always a better car coming. Even when hardware 5 comes out, there will be a hardware six and seven on the horizon. I couldn’t wait any longer and I’m glad I traded up.
I have 2022 HW3 Model Y Performance got it in late 22, my wife has a 2023 Model Y long range with HW4 there are somethings my HW3 car does better than her car does, I am going to get the juniper when the Performance Model comes out, hopefully AI5 will be available then, but hopefully we do get the upgrades we where promised, I paid 12K for mine and 8K for my wife's so we should get the promise that we paid for.
And it depends on time of day and with or without flashing school zone lights. Need sign readers and FSD doesn’t do well with flashing yellow lights right now. So seeing the flashing yellow lights on school zone signs is probably still a challenge.
Speed is a real sticking point lately. I'm on 12.5.6.2 and it either wants to do 12mph over the speed limit or 2mph under the limit. 2 steps forward, 1 step back.
Jon, I think it's a little worse than you said. Tesla was selling HW3 cars as late as late-2023 and maybe even early 2024, which means some of those cars are less than a year old and people are being pressured to dump those cars and buy new one's for HW4 and FSD. Short answer is NO; no way is FSD worth dumping almost brand new cars that are working perfectly fine. I bought a used Model Y long range and I will never buy another gas car. This car has sold me on EV's but not FSD. In my opinion FSD will NEVER work unsupervised unless they change the definition of the word "unsupervised"; which I think they are in the process of doing.
Vehicles last about 5 years, with regard to their electronic equipment. They are just like computers or iPhones in that regard. This is why I wouldn’t buy FSD upfront, though I have subscribed to FSD now that I am driving more. As far as the LIFE of the car, that’s more like 15 years. One of my (ICE) cars is 19 years old and I will keep it until it dies. But, the Tesla Model Y I own is a little over 2 years old. It’s current enough, and I won’t consider upgrading it for at least 3 more years. FSD is not the reason I bought a Tesla, I still have a great electric vehicle and HW3 will be good enough for the time being. Do I WANT the most current up to date, safest, FSD vehicle? Sure. But, I don’t NEED it immediately. I’m patient, and I don’t mind waiting to see what will be available in 3 more years. I advise you to take a deep breath and relax, you still have a great electric vehicle, and at some point, you can trade up for the latest and greatest hardware platform that Tesla offers. Enjoy the ride you have today!
For all those people who are upset about having HW3 on their Tesla's and not getting latst FSD you have two options either deal with it or buy buy an updated HW4 Tesla. The world of technology is moving fast that's all
I literally just bought my Tesla. It’s certified used has hardware three obviously but I bought it after the we.robot event thinking that I would be able to use all of those self driving features when it came out but you’re starting to look like I just wasted $25,000.
As some here have already stated, Musk 'promised' on the last earnings call to replace HW3 w/HW4 (or equivalent) if HW3 could not reach FSD levels necessary. IMO that time is now. However, knowing Musk we will not see that happen for 3-5 years at best. While he is a man of his word, time seems to warp in his world. Hope I'm wrong and the olive branch comes sooner. I know there are a lot of other very frustrated HW3 owners like me.
We bought my wifes MY in 2022 when it was $62k, I bought my 2020MY Used in late 2022 with FSD and Accel Boost for $52k. together we still owe about $65k for both cars, I will not be purchasing a new car for awhile. that being said, I am not the original owner, so the "free upgrade" may not even be available for me, even a purchased upgrade will take longer than the free one, if it will even be available
also, my previous cars a 98 BMW 328I I got rid of in 2012, a 2012 Prius I still have. I tend to keep cars until they cost a car payment a month to keep alive
When they offered a $1,000 upgrade from HW2.5 to HW3, it didn't matter if you were the original owner or not. The upgrade was available as long as you had the non-subscription version of FSD.
Not pessimistic just realistic. Tesla holds that no part is the best part. They’ve streamlined production to the barest minimum COGs. There is no way they’re going to spend money upgrading hardware. Especially when they held firmly 6 months ago that the hardware could not be upgraded. Elon Musk only said they would upgrade hw3 because he was being a politician. It was on the heels of the election and he was saying what people wanted to hear. He released 12.3.6 when he wanted his pay package approved. During those weeks, he released updates every two weeks. People thought he was stepping up the game. After the package approved, we stopped seeing frequent updates. Tesla will wait until their records indicate hw3 is on the roads less than 1 or 2 % of the fleet. Then they’ll give incentives to buy a new Tesla. They won’t upgrade. It’s too costly. Hw3 trade in incentives probably around mid or end of 2026. I don’t think longer because by 2027 there will be customers buying other EV brands.
At some point Elon will be sued over his full self-driving promises. It'll be interesting to see what happens then. Seems like at a minimum he'll have to offer free FSD transfers or refunds The people who purchased FSD.
TY Jon! I got the cyber truck now, a year or two before retiring. We also have a 2017!model S and a 2018 model three with hardware three… Hoping to replace the model S and transfer the full self driving with the free supercharging if that is an offer… Anytime Tesla :-)
I'm not buying another tesla until I have control of the speed off the freeway. The updates will continue. I hope the whiney videos don't. If you had your car 5 years, it's paid for, or it should be. Sell it for 25k, so a new car is another 25k. I'm not sure the fireside chats are going to pay off?
Or is a car 35k sense you can transfer and buy a used HDW 4 with a 4k tax credit no interest minus your 25k car. Isn't that like 6ish grand to move up?

If hw3 isn’t enough I think we will be upgraded. It just makes sense. If not, I’m mentally prepared to order not only a new car, but a couple robotaxis bc I wanna make money off this and I think it’s a no brainer. You can use it for the family if needed, and it prints money if not.
What are your views on when Trump is in office he'll end the EV tax credit? With your AI3 car you can upgrade to AI4 car for free at your Tesla car dealership. For me the first Tesla car I should buy is Tesla AI5 either model 3 or Y.
He'll likely need Congress to approve an end to the tax credit. Ending the tax credit would be good for Telsa. All the other EV manufacturers are struggling and the end of the tax credit might be enough to push most of them off the map.
Like I mentioned in your Episode 1 a few days ago, I just hope they release speed profiles to HW3 before putting a pause on us. I bought my 2018 M3P used 4 years ago and paid it off within 12 months.. I have no reason to sell it, especially with how the used market is. I also am not in a spot to purchase a second one yet, but even if we were I'd be looking at a used Model X for the 3 rows and possibly ditching my wife's 2021 Atlas. I don't know.. Hopefully we get some love over the next couple months, but it does suck that HW3 software updates have come to a screeching halt after 12.5.4.2 🥲

That would be the Tesla way.
dream on… never coming…
@@markfrantz4612great joke 😀
@@Alperic27yeah these people are delusional. Tesla isn't going backward on hw3.
My third car was about a year ago and I again dished out $15,000 for FSD.
full self driving was not an option you could pay for in 2012
@@AdamHewlett actually it was an option to pay for the future implementation of full self driving.
Even just today she asked me on the way out “Can I take your car to work today?” Even though she has a brand new civic lol
I’ll probably wait until HW5 to upgrade and even then may just keep my old 2019 along side a leased HW5 car (most likely a Model S or a Y if they keep the same body as current)
Keep up the great content BTW.
Exactly. If they’re going to upgrade the computers for free, then anyone with HW3 and a paid FSD package should just keep the vehicle.
This! That's how I feel.
Elon spoke of Teslas with FSD as being appreciating assets. HD3 may put that to lie.
Won't happen. Because honestly while FSD is cool, majority of owners don't use it.
@@tristanward9937 you trippin. people who pay 15K for something always want what they paid for.
I just upgraded my 2021 MY LR for 2024 model to get AI4 and the FSD transfer a loan rate advantage.
It just made sense to me.
Like you I would be waiting to upgrade my car till after HW5 is out. I hope Tesla does upgrade my HW3 car to a variant of AI4, but if they even do this it will likely be year or more down road.
I think ongoing free transfer for repeat buyers makes the most sense. It’s by far the cheapest option for Tesla, and and seems an equitable solution.
You Sir 100% on target. I am in the same boat.....I keep telling myself to wait for AI5....It is going to be hard to do as I am 76.
HW4 likely won't solve Level-5 driving either.
Nope. There are reasons the Cybercab will have AI5 (and a front bumper camera). L5 has to have self cleaning cameras as well. Still much to solve for.
The new processor in HW4 makes FSD even smoother compared to our cars (my 22-year model also with HW3)
The big predicted difference between HW4 and AI5 is just going to be a processor upgrade. The cameras are where they need to be. Per Elon...
As for waiting for next year or this year. It's up to you of course but there's about a 10-12 thousand dollar price difference.
Let's see what Juniper has installed. 2 year leases will solve the problem of being ahead of the curve.
My car is 18 months old and already max it’s limits, what about when he said this cars are prepared for future, timeless. Made for the future. We lost so much just for him lowering the prices now we lost the upgrades too … so ass
I bought my new Model 3 fourteen months ago, and it has HW3. It should be getting the updates.
New Teslas still very expensive what do you mean.
Exactly correct…. I’m HW3. new M3 @ Oct 23. Bought FSD. Left behind sooo soon
Sad to say is I would never be able to afford a new Tesla
What date is it being released?
AI5 sounds exciting, but I much prefer buying a used vehicle at least 2-3 years old to let someone else take the depreciation hit. It’s a challenging conundrum when you want the latest tech though. But for me I wouldn’t be buying an AI5 vehicle for 3-4 years.
100 safety score here. I feel your pain.
We live in interesting times!
my hw3 car does everything on my local routes so no complaints, I can't complain at all haha, upvoted!!
Don’t forget the software update AI3 got for just the cameras and the world of different it made with no camera replacements.
I will sit on the side until H5 before I buy my model Y. My 2 year old model x has H3 and I am disappointed
I'm in the market for a FSD Tesla. I'm not sure what to do. HW3 or just go for HW4?
It depends on your budget. TLDR, HW4 is technically better, but not by too great a difference compared to HW3.
Elon also said that he plans on upgrading HW3 cars to AI5, so it won't be a total dead end for current HW3 cars.
You are missing one important point:
When it will be established that HW3 will not make it to unsupervised FSD the price of all those cars are most probably going to dive in the deep.
Maybe FSD 13 will finally slow down for school zones. It still doesn’t do it with 12.5.6.3
And it depends on time of day and with or without flashing school zone lights.
I'm in the same boat. Still a great car for $25,000, and we will get updates, they'll just lag behind HW4.
I’m waiting for juniper hw3 is over and the upgrade isn’t gonna happen
As some here have already stated, Musk 'promised' on the last earnings call to replace HW3 w/HW4 (or equivalent) if HW3 could not reach FSD levels necessary. IMO that time is now. However, knowing Musk we will not see that happen for 3-5 years at best. While he is a man of his word, time seems to warp in his world. Hope I'm wrong and the olive branch comes sooner. I know there are a lot of other very frustrated HW3 owners like me.
Meanwhile, I'm over here still on HW2.5 😂
I remember back then I got in at safety score 98 haha

This is sound advice. hw5 isn't too far
HW3 will get replaced by HW4, courtesy of Tesla
For me if hardware 3 is not improving I’ll just stop subscribing.
So sad to share my doomed feeling but still hopeful to be upgrade as Elon promised……who knows!! Amen….
Doomed ☠️
At some point Elon will be sued over his full self-driving promises. It'll be interesting to see what happens then. Seems like at a minimum he'll have to offer free FSD transfers or refunds The people who purchased FSD.
lets make a bet… you ll NEVER GET IT… 😂🤣

Just buy used
